Good morning. Quick question. I need to raise/level parts of my garden, prob about 4 x 3 metres. About 30-50mm raise required. Am I better with soil/sand and grass seed, or, new tuft? Regards Martin
A good tip for the edging is to cut out the sod and flip it around. You can then seed over the bit that was on the edge after packing it with topsoil. The cut edge with roots is far more stable than newly planted grass seed and has better chance of staying in place.
I used the same compost spreader for the first time a few days ago! my top soil was very moist and there were so many clumps (soil). it was heavy for me to roll the spreader :-S but I really like this tool. Thank you for the video! Glad to see the whole process!!
Thanks for teaching, there are still so many things to learn for me! As an german engineer but lazy man and lover of a good lawn i have concentrated on good robotic lawn mowering and automatically watering in my garden, this helps a lot. But some of your actions are confronting with cables and pipelines in the ground. Before corona crisis i had some woman in my garden telling their husbands ''see, this is a good lawn has to look like'' but I'm a child whithout experience against your practice!! Sorry for bad english but best wishes and thanks even there is a brexit. Have a nice day.
1. mow lawn to lowest setting of your mower. 2. remove autumn leaves, and scarify to get rid of thatch. 3. tidy up and sharpen the edges. 4.aerate. 5. collect the lawn plugs with mower or rake or broom (let them dry for a couple of hours). 6. spread top dressing to level areas. 7. Overseed. 8. water 2-3x a day to encourage germination of seeds.
Football could be done in 3 mins, 1) kick a ball 2) score a goal, 3) win the game. But I still watch the 90. People learn in different ways and I try to make a balance, hope it was useful in some way.
That aerator looks good. I have a hollow tine with the 4 tubes but it works awful on my clay soil with the plugs constantly getting stuck, so I have resorted to using a garden fork. Something like yours looks ideal though as there is a recess for the plug to fall out, or at worst be picked out
Another informative video, cheers. I started my renovation back while we were in lockdown as a last resort before ripping it up and replacing it with something which was less offensive on the eye. I have followed your tips and advice, but just using the most basic of equipment ie garden fork, spring Tyne rake, and muscle power. I have become a bit obsessed with it to be honest, and, at times, have wondered whether I have been wasting my time, but, finally, I mowed it yesterday, and I now have beautiful stripes for the first time. great tips, however my lawn always gets so wet over autumn & winter due to lack of sunlight down that side, always having to reseed in spring, have dug it out & over this year & reseeded so hopefully it’ll come good for next year, came across a couple of bugs
Great video. Liked and subscribed for future content. Any advice for a rocky lawn? Lawn is compacted with building rubble, with poor drainage. The aerator always hits a stone and does not do much good.
what’s best way to approach mowing your lawn before & after autumn / winter?, do you have a “final cut” before then?, is there a rule of thumb for mowing after winter before spring?
Thanks for this video, it's great to see the whole process explained in one sequence. I want to put tenacity and iron sulphate on the lawn, at what stage should I do this in the renovation process?
I wouldn't use iron sulphate during seeding as it can impact the seeds. We also can't use tenacity in the UK but tmi believe the US guys put this down after seeding but before the topdressing
What ratio of sand to top soil should you use for top dressing, and what type of sand should you use. I have some lawn sand but am not sure I should use that for topdressing after overseeding.
Hi, finding your video's really useful. I recently (8 days ago) put down evergreen 4 in 1 complete, after scarifying and aerating. Already very pleased with the results so far. However i do have a few bald patches and unlevel patches. Wondering how long i should wait before tending to these issues, not sure if any soil dressing and patch products will interfere with the 4 in 1 stuff. Keep up the great and easy to understand videos
I've watched many videos on lawn renovation but this one seems the best. I have a patchy clay soil but it's compact and hard like concrete. Will scarification and aeration do the job?
Another great video 👍🏻 Thanks for taking the time to make these 👍🏻 Purchased the Swardman Aerator using your link. Hopefully next weekend won’t be too late to run through these steps? I scarified 2 weeks ago. Nematodes yesterday. But would like to level and over seed once more before Winter.
I see you used topsoil to level the grass, what's your opinion on using mortar sand? In what situation would somebody choose sand over soil. Thanks, and keep up the videos. Really informative and well filmed.
Some would say scalping the grass beforehand will further stress the grass and potentially cause some issues. What are your thoughts. Is it better to leave it slightly longer to reduce risk? Also can the thatch be dropped on the compost heap for later use?
Spring and autumn normally in the UK. I have a full range of meadow lawn and wildflower seeds too, if you need some help with picking what you want drop me an email on my website 👍
I'm watching from Toronto, Canada. I'm a lawn nut, so I like to see what people are doing in other areas where cool season grasses are used (can always learn something). Compared to most lawns here, I keep mine very short (I increase from 3/4" to about 1" or 1.25" when the our summer heat comes around, generally mid-June through August) but I need to use different "dwarf" grasses to accomplish this. I use a blend of a dwarf perennial eye and a dwarf Kentucky bluegrass. I noticed the seed blend you're using seems to include a lot of fescues. Do you use a bluegrass variety at all? What height do you maintain your lawn? I'm looking forward to seeing how your renovation turns out... your timing and process is right on with my area, so your information is great for this part of Canada. I usually add a starter fertiliser once I see the perennial rye showing through; the Kentucky Blue variety takes about 2 to 3 weeks even in the best conditions. Am I correct that you use something similar? Thanks for the video... I have subscribed...
Hi Adrian welcome from the UK, on my front lawn rennovarion I used a rye only mix which turned out brilliant. My lawn as-is has blend of rye and fescue, we don't tend to use kentucky blue very much over here - most of the mixes are rye and fescue. This year I've had best results from 25mm to 32mm so similar to what you say, and yes I will add the fert later on after the first cut probably so the existing grass doesn't outcompete the seed and the new seed will be ready to take it
@@GardenLawncareGuy Interesting... I really like the rye blends too... beautiful texture and colour and I think they tend to grow more upright, even the short variety. And I forgot I can speak "metric" with you. Do to geography, I tend to see more videos from US people. Along with their rather weak command of the English language, they generally have next to no knowledge of the metric system. Thanks for your reply... continued success with your channel and I hope you gain more viewers from Canada.
Brilliant vid as usual pal 👍😁 From what I gather that seed mix is a good one, so it’ll be nice to see how it does. I hope it does better than my front lawn, which was doing well until getting decimated by foxes 😂. I’ve fixed it this evening and I’m praying they won’t come back
Garden Lawncare Guy I’m not sure, I’ve never seen anything like it. I occasionally get a few holes in the back garden but never that bad. I went quite heavy with the new soil so it will have been quite loose. Maybe yeah, they thought something was underneath?? I’ve packed it down a bit better so 🤞. At least the back lawn is doing well. I knew it was too good to be true, I haven’t had an extreme weather event since I did everything 😂😂😂
This one, fast to grow, very durable for all the foot traffic and most affordable for a business. Order 10kg for that size 👍 gardenlawncareguy.com/shop/grass-seed/general-purpose-heavy-duty-grass-seed-mix/
Hello Garden Lawncare Guy. I am watching your very helpful channel from Germany. I do have one question to this video. Is there a particular reason why you don't use a "Rasenrakel" to level the lawn? Rasenrakel is the german word, which I didn't translate, to avoid a mis-tranlation. However, you may find pictures if you google it. Thank you very much in advance. Regard, Wolfgang
Good video there! I see you went with the platinum pro in the end. I found it good germinated in around 7 days except for the more shaded areas where I have had less success. Looking forward to seeing the results you get. Also its all set up now and level for your allett next year! Ps almost at 10k subscribers now, well done!
Great info! What's the best way to put the top dressing on without the cylinder? Would putting small piles of top soil down and using a brush work just as well? Also is it worth putting fertiliser and lawn feed down first before top dressing or after?
Don't use iron with new seeds it can dehydrate them. As I used a topsoil I didnt apply fert but I will use a pre seed at the first cut. I dont want to use a pre seed now as the existing grass will outcompete the seed. You can use fert here and seaweed but do not apply an all in one type of product with weed killer and iron as it will be too harsh. You can also wait until first cut
@@GardenLawncareGuy that's great advice, saved me from Making that mistake tomorrow! thanks for taking the time to reply. Look forward to more videos 👍
Really informative videos you a putting out there mate. So would you use the bladed roller on the scarifier first and the the roller with the spring tines?
Always enjoy your videos. In the end I got an Allett Kensington 14c (their electric model), and I used the A1 Premium Pro grass also. It's on about day 16 now and already looking a lush dark green. 👌 How's your A1 premium Pro going?
Hi. Great video thanks. Quick question, I have a section of lawn approx 5 x 5 metres that I need to raise by approx 50mm... Am I better doing this with soil/sand and grass seed, or buying new tuft and laying it directly on top of the old tuft with soil inbetween. Regards Martin.
Great video, nice to have another UK channel to learn from. Have you ever tried liquid aeration? Heard from US channels that it works well. Keep up the good work 👍🏾
Humic acid is one way to improve the soil... I have tried one lot... it didn't break down for weeks though :-\ . Oh you from chester.. I from wrexham..if you ever need a lawn to re do for your channel.. my mums has a huge front and back lol needs work. Great video by the way :-)
Tried to hollow tine my lawn gave up and started to use a pitch fork , bent the fork so had to use a drill ! Surely this isn't normal 🤷🏻♂️ ps the lawn was wet after days of rain .
Great video as always good content, may sound a daft question but once you have covered seeds with top soil how often will you mow or will you just leave until for a few weeks. Thanks
Hi Matt, great stuff just ordered seed and fertilisers from you ready for this year. Seen you use both but which spreader do you reckon is best the Scott’s rotary or the hand held version?
Great video, now that we’re nearing this time of year again! Quick question though… On average, how much soil do you use up, taking into account leveling and top dressing?
Great video mate well done. I'm having a nightmare with my new lawn, one side hasn't taken as well as the other, and just looks like a mushy half dead mess now. Interestingly, its the one side of my garden that had what seemed like really fertile jet black soil, but I'm now thinking it may have been too organic as it seemed to have no sandy quality whatsoever. I'm thinking its retaining too much water maybe on this side? Any advice would be appreciated 🙏
to overseed my entire lawn, do I need to cover with topsoil and then seed and then top dress with soil or just throw the seed over the existing grass and then just top with soil to cover? thanks
@@GardenLawncareGuy thanks, just seems like the soil/mud on my lawn is quite hard so will grass seed still be able to root though if I just seed on that and then top with soil? trying to get it all right this time as last summer I used lots of seed and soil but not much happened lol
is now (september) the best time to treat with nematodes? If so can you re-seed, top dress etc at the same time? my lawn has a terrible leatherjacket problem and i've treat with 3 nematode treatments during the summer but still have issues. Good vid
Thanks for the Great video! Can everything done in this video also be done in spring? Also ive got loads of small rocks in my lawn, I've tried raking it, hand picking, leaf blower but can't seem to get rid of them 😔 do you have any advice? Thanks
Yes it can be done in spring too just autumm can be better for the weather temperatures and not lead into a hot summer for the new growth. Depends where you are but this will work during most of the growing season
Great video. Best summary of Autumn lawn care I’ve seen. Do you think it’s too late to do this now? I live in Chester,UK? Many thanks. Keep the content coming.
Very informative video mate. My lawn has been affected with chafer grubs, do you recommend using a spiker roller/shoes or an aerator tool like you used in the video before applying the nematodes? Thanks for the help
To be totally honestly I don't know if that will or won't effect the efficiency, but seems to make sense if we want them in soil and could get some aerstion done too
Your patio area seems to be away from the house. Is there any reason for that? We are thinking of putting a patio in and debating on the pros of cons of putting it near or away from the house.
I will apply some fert down after the first mow with using the dressing to avoid the existing grass outcompeting the seed. Dont use 4 in 1 product or one with iron at this stage.
You didn't use a soil/sand mix, did you consider using sand. I have levelled a couple of times just improving it each time and both times used topsoil as you did, but Im now thinking about using a sand mix
Garden Lawncare Guy thanks for your reply. May I ask what is the benefit of putting fertiliser on later as opposed to immediately before seeding? Many thanks.
If overseeding grass putting down at the start the existing grass will take it quicker than the seed and will compete with the seed. So do it later. Seeding from scratch do it at the start

@@GardenLawncareGuy Good to know. Thanks
Humic acid is one way to improve the soil... I have tried one lot... it didn't break down for weeks though :-\ . Oh you from chester.. I from wrexham..if you ever need a lawn to re do for your channel.. my mums has a huge front and back lol needs work. Great video by the way :-)
Still can't get over the price of the compost spreader! Have been thinking about one for a while now.
For the basic gardener how would you suggest putting the topsoil over the seed to get the contact?
Broadcast with a shovel and drag piece of wood or crate over
Can I do this now? In a summer? UK
If you can water a few times a day
Tried to hollow tine my lawn gave up and started to use a pitch fork , bent the fork so had to use a drill ! Surely this isn't normal 🤷🏻♂️ ps the lawn was wet after days of rain .
Yeah thats not normal but sounds like it definitely needs it
@@GardenLawncareGuy I take it I should continue to drill holes in it and then over seed and top dress as normal or is there another course of action ?
Rent a professional aerator or pay a company to do it out could be another course
What do you recommend for large ( a couple of inch ) sunken sections?
Cut out, backfill and relay
Great video as always good content, may sound a daft question but once you have covered seeds with top soil how often will you mow or will you just leave until for a few weeks. Thanks
Leave it until 2 to 3 inches tall paul
Hi Matt, great stuff just ordered seed and fertilisers from you ready for this year. Seen you use both but which spreader do you reckon is best the Scott’s rotary or the hand held version?
For small jobs hand held daniel as it doesn't take up much space and easy to use so I prefer that - thanks for the order good luck with your project
@@GardenLawncareGuy id say mines a touch bigger than yours, would it take too long using handheld
No hand held spreader just as quick really unless it's a large area as the hopper is smaller so you need to fill it more
Hi,
I'd like to level my seriously uneven lawns. Dips of 3 - 4 inches in places. What would you suggest?
For that level topsoil, screened and weed free like this gardenlawncareguy.com/product/70-30-top-dressing-bulk-bag-1000kg/
Can I ask if this is the step by step process to undertake in Spring as well, following any dangers of frost passing by?
Hello Matt, lock german rasenrakel
i really want that aerator but they dont sell it in the states
😢
Great video, now that we’re nearing this time of year again! Quick question though… On average, how much soil do you use up, taking into account leveling and top dressing?
Thanks 6kg per m2 is a heavy dressing bit past few times I've gone over to improve some deeper levels
Any advice would be appreciated 🙏
to overseed my entire lawn, do I need to cover with topsoil and then seed and then top dress with soil or just throw the seed over the existing grass and then just top with soil to cover? thanks
Seed, soil, roll or tread in
@@GardenLawncareGuy thanks, just seems like the soil/mud on my lawn is quite hard so will grass seed still be able to root though if I just seed on that and then top with soil? trying to get it all right this time as last summer I used lots of seed and soil but not much happened lol
is now (september) the best time to treat with nematodes? If so can you re-seed, top dress etc at the same time? my lawn has a terrible leatherjacket problem and i've treat with 3 nematode treatments during the summer but still have issues. Good vid
The best time is when you see the daddy longlegs appear
Try covering lawn with black sheeting overnight, go out early in the morning, remove sheet and quickly pick them up
Which blade is for scarification?
The solid one
@@GardenLawncareGuy thanks for your quick reply. So the spring tines are used for raking then?
Thanks for the Great video! Can everything done in this video also be done in spring? Also ive got loads of small rocks in my lawn, I've tried raking it, hand picking, leaf blower but can't seem to get rid of them 😔 do you have any advice? Thanks
Yes it can be done in spring too just autumm can be better for the weather temperatures and not lead into a hot summer for the new growth. Depends where you are but this will work during most of the growing season
Great vid matt. Can I do this full treatment in the spring too.
Yeah string and autumn 👍
How many years after the first seeding we should do that work?
Wish we could buy that aerator in the US
You can, Same company ships to US pending stock, see link in description
@@GardenLawncareGuy just realized that, thanks
Can you still follow this process for spring as in now?
Yeah
Great thanks, your videos or massively helpful. Keep it up.
Thanks! If you need any materials for your project checkout Gardenlawncareguy.com 😁
Matt, what would be the earliest I could use moss killer?
Hi, thanks for the video. When do you add autumn fertiliser to the lawn? Just after all these tasks or do you need to wait 6 weeks after?
Thanks
When overseeding ill normally apply later when the seed and existing grass can take it in parallel
Great video. Best summary of Autumn lawn care I’ve seen. Do you think it’s too late to do this now? I live in Chester,UK? Many thanks. Keep the content coming.
I’m in Sheffield and it’s not too late for me if that helps.
William Baker thanks William. Just wanted some reassurance I wasn’t wasting my time. Thanks
Noah Moran nw, I’ve managed to grow seed well into October, so I’d just say the sooner the betterreally
I'm in chester too noah, did mine last week perfect time
Thanks. Gonna give it a try. Like the look of the Landzie Spreader. Thanks
Very informative video mate.
My lawn has been affected with chafer grubs, do you recommend using a spiker roller/shoes or an aerator tool like you used in the video before applying the nematodes? Thanks for the help
To be totally honestly I don't know if that will or won't effect the efficiency, but seems to make sense if we want them in soil and could get some aerstion done too
@@GardenLawncareGuy great thanks for the info.
Hi. Is it okay to do this process in April also? Would you follow the same steps as you have done here in Autumn? Thank you
Yeah spring or autumn 👍
Where can I get that aerator. Impossible to buy
Your patio area seems to be away from the house. Is there any reason for that? We are thinking of putting a patio in and debating on the pros of cons of putting it near or away from the house.
You want your patio where you get the most sun 🌞
Hi. Do you recommend throwing some fertiliser down after the top dressing to help the new seeds? (maybe some autumn stuff)
I will apply some fert down after the first mow with using the dressing to avoid the existing grass outcompeting the seed. Dont use 4 in 1 product or one with iron at this stage.
@@GardenLawncareGuy Thanks very much.
Can i see what the lawn looked afterwards?
How about showing the end result?!
You didn't use a soil/sand mix, did you consider using sand. I have levelled a couple of times just improving it each time and both times used topsoil as you did, but Im now thinking about using a sand mix
Hi Eddie this was a sandy loam mix. I have a few areas to level out first as I don't really want to be putting a full sand cap on the lawn just yet
Thanks again for the content. Did you fertilise before or after? What point would you consider fertilising?
Going to applying pre seed fert after the first or second mow
Garden Lawncare Guy thanks for your reply. May I ask what is the benefit of putting fertiliser on later as opposed to immediately before seeding? Many thanks.
If overseeding grass putting down at the start the existing grass will take it quicker than the seed and will compete with the seed. So do it later. Seeding from scratch do it at the start
Garden Lawncare Guy thank you.
