Nice vid. I have to say the electric scarifiers are pretty decent. I’d recommend using the ‘aerator’ (or verticutter as it is really) with overseeding/topdressing, to get some slits in the soil. I’ve found it really helps the seed to settle in.

Good video looking forward to seeing your next videos on deeper scarification using blades on your scarifier and top dressing with overseeding and Autumn fertilising ready for the winter dormant season . Have you decided which topdressing to use yet as i am very keen on purchasing some good quality organic 80% well rotted green compost and 20% washed sand mix from a company called Lawn store (see there video on this product on line ) comes in 880 litre hessian bags and is £117.00 inc vat plus delivery cost . Love the new cylinder mower you look a real lawn pro now .Glenn
Thanks for getting back to me , ironic as I have just ordered there medallion premium grass seed which I have heard is very good and has a good variety of rye grass without fescue grasses and is ideal for shady and full sun areas like my front lawn . I looked at there top soil but they only sell 70/30 mix and that’s 70% washed sand so because I have a fairly new lawn laid by the house developer like yours 15 months ago I have a good proportion of sand already below the turf and my drainage is already ok . So I am hoping by going for a more compost rich blend full of nutrients and I will add some bone meal after sieving if needed this might be more beneficial . What do you think ?

Loving the tips and info. Following this video I intend to scarify and aerate my lawn, something that has never been done to it, but which one should I do first and how long should I leave between each job? Thanks in advance.
Just subscribed. Great video. We had a new lawn laid end of June. Would it be wrong to do this level of renovation this autumn (aerate, scarify etc.)? Should I leave it until next year? I’ve notice that small sections of the lawn are not completely rooted to the ground, which would worry me if I looked to punch holes in it or lift dead grass from between the blades. Cheers, Will 👍
Yeah normally it should not need rennovation on new turf, it most likely won't need it in the spring either but if there are any dips or thin patches then you can overseed but probably won't need the heavy works
would you scarify a lawn in jan , iv done mine before about 3 years ago and did it hard, it looked like a plawed field but come the spring it looked great, done it again this jan but not as hard, any tips ,many thanks
Did you apply already the autumn A1 fertiliser? I generally like the product but for the autumn, considering that maybe I will do 1 max 2 applications, I will try the aftercut. At the end will turn to be cheaper and I won't use that much due to the lawn size.
How are you finding that scarifier? I have an Allett cordless mower with the scarifier cassette but dont want to keep swapping them over to rake the leaves. Does the Enheil adjust high enough to gently rake? It also looks like it has similar to a verticutter attachment that may be useful in the spring to tackle annual meadow grass.
Yes I found on the high setting it was high enough to skim the surface without pulling to much atall after cutting 26or32mm with the allet. Will depend where the leaves are stilling to as sometimes you might need to drop it down if they get wet or into the sward. There is enough adjustments to take care of this. The verticutter type is good too, especially for seeding into the troughs.
@@GardenLawncareGuy thanks for the reply, I'll get one on order. It will help not using the Allett as when its damp the cylinder can make things a little muddy from the remains of worm casts. I'll subscribe to you channel and add some of your tips to my lawncare program. I had planned to leave overseeding untill spring when I toodress again.

Hi no I did not do them all in the same day, if you have broadleaf weeds and want to control them then that would be a first step along with the iron for moss control. Then after a week or two you can scarify to remove the dead moss. After you have removed any moss and weed + dead matter then you can fertilize as it wil be more effective once the dead material is removed 👍
Just bought a Bosch avr 1100, going for a light go this week in highest setting, then going down next month for over seeding and top dressing. Anybody using this Bosch, recommend which level to go with for overseeding?
Jacob Collins just purchased one of these too! 👍 Though I had already scarified heavily early in the year and over seeded and another area under a big cedar I have has 70% new seed so I will be going light this time round.
Paul Gibson, managed to get out yesterday and went over on the highest setting, bit of a shock as I have little lawn left, what level did you use for overseedeing? don’t want to totally destroy my lawn
I use mine on 3 in autumn. When I first bought it I’d used the scarifier cassette in my Suffolk Punch a week or so prior to using the Bosch and I was amazed at how much more efficient the Bosch was.
Haven’t used it yet, I used an old spring tine electric scarifier/rake then watered well over the next few days and put down some pre seed fertiliser. Then Followed by the grass seed. My lawn is looking really good bar under the cedar tree where I need to top dress and overseed. Maybe just a couple of spots on the top lawn to spot seed. Might not use the verticutter until next spring, frightened of pulling out the new grass tbf.
It depends alot on the type of grass you have, the location and also personal preference! Some tall type fescues prefer to be mowed long, and other fescues can be very low. Usage / footfall and weather can also be a criteria to consider
Garden Lawncare Guy It’s strange really insofar as the old lawn was removed, topsoil used to build it up to level and then turfed and it was fine until about 4 weeks ago when groups of small mushrooms started appearing in areas which are lush and other areas which are not and are nowhere near as lush. In fact hardly anything has been taken off in the last three cuts over the last 4 weeks.
If you overseed 9 weeks ago you should NOT dethatch (or scarify) because you'll rip up the young grass seedlings. In a perfect world, you do this step before overseeding so that you remove materials like thatch and moss from the yard and expose the soil. If you haven't already, I recommend putting down a good starter fertilizer at this point.
Check the scarifier is at its highest setting so it digs into the soil less. Also try reducing the mower height before scarifying so the scarifier takes less if the grass and more of what comes out is dead thatch. Although reducing the mowing height stresses the grass it’s done in September when there’s more rain and growth is slowing so it recovers fine - especially if you feed and overseed. I tend to cut using a rotary mower on its highest setting during summer and reduce gradually to its lowest setting for the final cut before winter. If I’m scarifying, I always cut low beforehand. Good luck!
Check under the clumps for grubs, they might have eaten the roots, that was my case. Also could be shallow roots in general, weekly deep watering vs daily shallow watering in that case.
The benefits is the worms working through the soil. The castings themselves could be beneficial to the soil but the purpose of an enriched soil is to improve growth and if by being there the squash and smother or kill the growth then the benefit is not realised and we loose the added value, especially when wet
Hope you enjoyed the Einhell. I used mine this past weekend on setting 1 which just went below the surface. Got rid of a lot of weed grass! Looking forward to your product review. Top quality video.
Thanks Graham, its lifted some poa for me i only braved setting 2 and 3. Going for it in the next one though. How did you find ysing it? Nice product i though
I don't bother with the collection box. It fills too quickly. It's better to leave it on the lawn and then use a plastic leaf rake to collect it. Mine is slightly different model, but yeah I use the tine cartridge and let it rip. Overseeded with the plat Pro.
The overall appearance I've been told will be finer than the Premier pro you have on your front even though I like the result you got with it! Have a look at the 'Chardin' ryegrass they use in the mix, it sounds impressive.
Thanks for quick response, I’ve got loads of wormcasts but also need to rake and reseed, is it ok to put iron down and then rake and seed plus autumn feed straight away, or would it be best to sort worms first and wait a month or so before raking etc?
I always mow first at a low height otherwise the scarifier can drag up good grass and the volume removed is overwhelming. Mowing at a low beforehand makes the lawn look bare and stressed once you’ve scarified but the key is to then feed and overseed, then keep it moist. September scarification, feeding and overseeing has transformed my lawn. If you dare, scarify twice at 90 degrees. This will make the lawn very bare, so only do this if you’re over seeding and prepared to seed again in patches where it doesn’t take.
Garden Lawncare Guy I’m not sure whether my mower heights (on the mower) are not quite right, but if I go to 45-50mm that seems almost too short , and may expose some brown below. I’m at around 60mm and seems short and tidy enough, and keeping a good amount of leaf still exposed
If you want to drop the height you need to do ot over time, the first cuts at a lower height will look brown but they will green out again as the height is dropped. I used to like a long er lawn and im planning to keep the front long 40-50mm and the back shorter 25mm
Garden Lawncare Guy thank you - very insightful. So when I saw brown, I probably jumped to the wrong conclusion being is scalped it, or disease. And I should have left it then gone a bit lower a week or so later. Also is there any issues for me keeping it to 60mm it seems a nice cut - grass is household ryegrass mixed seed and pre existing lawn. Using miracle Gro 4 in 1, with last summer feed done, and ‘winter’ one going down in November
You can spray a selective herbicide for clover but a longer term solution is to make sure you fertilise the lawn with a nitrogen rich fertiliser as clover is an indication of low nitrogen levels in your soil.

Should you scarify grass that’s new, ie only three months old?
No at 3 months it will not require any heavy treatment. Just water, regular mowing and if you avoid heavy use
@@GardenLawncareGuy Thanks.
How low should you have the grass? I keep my grass very high 6/7inch
It depends alot on the type of grass you have, the location and also personal preference! Some tall type fescues prefer to be mowed long, and other fescues can be very low. Usage / footfall and weather can also be a criteria to consider
I have had a new lawn laid in early June but some areas have all but stopped growing and mushrooms are appearing. Any suggestions ???? Cliff
Mushroom are OK no issue, what do you mean by not growing how does it look?
Garden Lawncare Guy It’s strange really insofar as the old lawn was removed, topsoil used to build it up to level and then turfed and it was fine until about 4 weeks ago when groups of small mushrooms started appearing in areas which are lush and other areas which are not and are nowhere near as lush. In fact hardly anything has been taken off in the last three cuts over the last 4 weeks.
Garden Lawncare Guy when you mushrooms are ok. They are a bit unsightly (to my wife) and we have a dog who appears so far to be largely ignoring them
I'd be interested to know what I should be doing in September to my lawn, it's only 9 weeks since sewing so not suitable for weed killer etc.
You can start to cut it but sharp blade and not too much off plus a pre seed fert with high P, like this amzn.to/3aseTF1
I've just dug up 4 different areas in my lawn and not found any grubs . Would you think that it's ok or could their still be some elsewhere.?
Look out for the crane fly, good sign there are there and one indicator to treat
@@GardenLawncareGuy .👍cheers
When I scarify it tears out lumps of grass leaving bald patches. I have it on the highest setting and the grass is cut weekly at a height setting.
I thought worm castings were great and perhaps the best soil enricher.
The benefits is the worms working through the soil. The castings themselves could be beneficial to the soil but the purpose of an enriched soil is to improve growth and if by being there the squash and smother or kill the growth then the benefit is not realised and we loose the added value, especially when wet
@@GardenLawncareGuy ok thanks!!!!!!!!!
I'm eyeing that up too, still undecided were on the same wave length by the sounds of it
The overall appearance I've been told will be finer than the Premier pro you have on your front even though I like the result you got with it! Have a look at the 'Chardin' ryegrass they use in the mix, it sounds impressive.
It will be finer because of the fescues too that are in the plat mix right? The prem is rye only
Should you mow before raking or scarifying?
Yeah sounds good to me 👍
Thanks for quick response, I’ve got loads of wormcasts but also need to rake and reseed, is it ok to put iron down and then rake and seed plus autumn feed straight away, or would it be best to sort worms first and wait a month or so before raking etc?
Should I mow before scarfing for does it not matter?
I always mow first at a low height otherwise the scarifier can drag up good grass and the volume removed is overwhelming. Mowing at a low beforehand makes the lawn look bare and stressed once you’ve scarified but the key is to then feed and overseed, then keep it moist. September scarification, feeding and overseeing has transformed my lawn. If you dare, scarify twice at 90 degrees. This will make the lawn very bare, so only do this if you’re over seeding and prepared to seed again in patches where it doesn’t take.
Are white socks mandatory when using a lawn sprayer?
Most definitely, useful as an indication of overspray from the nozzle.
Yes. Yes that are
Much as I like to see a nice green lawn, it does worry me that it takes all these chemicals🤔
Exactly
If you keep up with weeding in your lawn you won't need chemicals. A good lawn feed, regular weeding and cuts will give you a great green lawn.
Yeah ive used maybe 5 or 10 squirts of weed killer this year, i hardly use weed killer as the lawn fights for itself now
Could you tell me what is the actual length you cut to during good growth time
Used to be 30-40mm rotary and now 25-32mm cylinder
Any tips on getting rid of clover? It's taking over our garden, thanks
You can spray a selective herbicide for clover but a longer term solution is to make sure you fertilise the lawn with a nitrogen rich fertiliser as clover is an indication of low nitrogen levels in your soil.
Superfly1503 true I use tenacity
Removing dead material is called dethatching.... not scarification
I never received my prize GLG.
MJ - I saw someone contacted me on Facebook on your behalf and I give them an email address to contact to claim it can you check that? Ill check too
