I don't own a mk8 but own a mk7.5 and I test drove the N before I made my purchase. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes but for me the build quality of the VW was better and better materials inside and out. I also liked the VW's DSG 7 speed gearbox was just amazing. The 4 doors and the stealthyness of the VW won me over. Plus I got my GTI for $5000 less than the N. That was the icing on the cake for me. Both are great cars but as I'm getting older the GTI just seemed like the best car for me everyday.
I feel exactly the same about my 2019 Autobahn DSG. I saved 7 grand by buying a mint full warranty demo car with 4000 km on it. I'm 49 and it's a perfect daily driver. I'm so glad I didn't wait for the Mk8. I'll be tuning my GTI and put a new wheels and ps5 tires on it next month.
My friend's GTI got me excited about hot hatchbacks, and my Veloster N made me fall in love with them. Both are great cars, but I agree, the Veloster is just something special
Yep. The N is a darn good car! VW in the USA is dead to me. Their only desirable models at the moment are the GTI Clubsport - because it has a notable power increase over the Mk7 & the Golf R Estate - because it’s spacious & relatively lightweight. Piss off VW. We loved you for your decent pricing, diesels, station wagons, and 2-door hatchbacks.
Such a good honest comparison. Thank you! I just got myself a GTI, but I would have gotten a Veloster N if there are any available ( crazy times). The V'N reminds me of my CRX from the late 80's which I love. Both are really good fun cars. I am 60 years old now, so forgive me for feeling slightly embarrassed getting out of a V'N.
I had a MK7 GTI and now I have a Veloster N. Overall I would say the GTI was a bit of a better daily comfort wise and the interior was a bit better also gas mileage was definitely better but the Veloster N is just pure fun and it has more personality. It knows what it is and it’s not going to be for everyone but Im head over heels for it, it’s just awesome. I love the styling, the driving dynamics, the power, and that exhaust. It’s an oddball too, they are definitely much rarer than GTI’s and I like the 3 door thing and blue color (with matching seatbelts) I rarely even see other N’s either but when I do I always get a wave. It’s pretty cool and overall I think it’s everything I wished the GTI was. Sadly it’s seeming like Hyundai are axing the Veloster N in favor of the Elantra N and Kona N and so 2022 is the last model year. So if you want one you should get on that because they will likely go up in value once they are officially discontinued like the Focus RS.
I have a mk8 gti in manual. I gotta say the veloster N is a nice car. But for daily driving I prefer the gti. Veloster is soo good for the money though.
Good review! Comes down to personal preference… as annoying as the interior controls on the mk8 gti may be, the build, quality and looks of the gti win me over
I own a 2023 GTI The controls are a complete non issue for me. After a day or two you know where everything is just like a interface with buttons. The system is snappy and I have no issues pressing things by mistake lol Reminds me of the press stance on iPhones and antenna gate, it’s the cool thing to say when there’s nothing else negative to say about a product. As far as which one is better in my opinion. If the Hyundai has the same numbers more or less performance wise to the GTI and also puts a smile on your face; then it’s just a matter of what you want: 1. Fast and furious car 2. The car James Bond would choose
Owned several GTI’s and they are great all daily’s. The new infotainment is tragic. But I now own a Veloster n 2022 performance blue manual. It’s so, so good and gets a ton of looks on the road. It’s raw, fun and when I think of a hot hatch this is it. The exhaust is a riot and the road feel is insane.
I freaking LOVE the Veloster N, and I think you did a great job keeping it fair without being too biased, haha! I don't think I have your level of self control. But I haven't been behind the wheel of a GTI yet, so I'll reserve my (biased) judgement until I actually get to drive one. Or I'll just wait for the new Type R and buy one of those because the Civic is freaking aces.
I just got a 2022 GTI… hands down the best GTI made to date and the best handling car I’ve ever driven. For reference, I have owned 2018 GTi, 2010-2011-2014-2015 WRX models, 2007 BMW335xi, 2005 Legacy GT, 2001 1.8T Jetta, 1996 Dodge Neon, 2 used Toyota Corollas in University days.
The Type R is hands down the fastest and funnest hot hatch, but is it $12k better than the N? Not to me; that's why I got the N after driving a Type R.
@@Sie84yv Funnest when pushed hard. It's so capable and well equipped, it needs to go hard. As a Veloster N owner myself as well, it's just fun under all situations.
I get that the Veloster is a nice car, but I never even considered cross shopping the GTI with a Veloster. I think you missed the point of the VW, but glad you like your car. I bought the GTI.
I still like the Veloster N more than the GTI for the character and fun factor, but I really hate that it doesn't come with a sunroof option outside of South Korea. As my daily driver, I always missed not having a sunroof on my MK7 Golf R. For that reason, I would strongly consider the Elantra N DCT.

i enjoy that you still have the plastic on the pedals of your N still Ijust removed mine on my N recently as it was peeling off haha great review of both
The Veloster seems like it would be fun to drive and it sounds great. The GTI , though down in performance, is a better looking and for me, more age appropriate car at 44
On the dyno, both cars make around 230whp and the Gti makes 15 lb ft more at around 285wtq, while the veloster makes 270wtq. The veloster has short ratios so that negates the torque increase
Great review. The chip shortage is gonna last till next year. There are still factories around the world trying to catch up with supply and demand. Used car prices will still be crazy till next year. As for the GTi or the Veloster N, I did look at both cars. Here in Canada, the Veloster N starts at around $38k cad and the DCT model goes for $39k cad which is the same price as the top trim for the GTi with DSG. I’m looking to get into a GTi at the end of the year. With supply being low, hopefully I will snag one then. Fingers crossed.
Canadian N DCT owner here. I skipped out on the GTI due to the terrible waranty. I bought a 8 year/160K km bumper to bumper manufacturers warranty for 2300$ lol covers the entire suspension, electrical and drivetrain. I was suprised to see tie rods and sway bar bushings covered too
I own a 2dr Mk7 GTI Performance with adaptive suspension, DCT, lane tracking, etc. & 300+ horsepower. The Veloster N is a better option than the Mk8 GTI. For now, Golf R or Audi RS3, if not just move on and up. Unfortunately the car market is insane but I say just find a really nice, used (ideally 2017+) GLA45 AMG instead of a new VW Golf.
I don’t know about the US, but in Canada the Veloster N is about $10,000 more than the base DSG GTI. That being said, in Canada the GTI is better bang for the buck, depending on the trim level. Yes, I agree about the Golf R…. for 6k more it is the obvious best choice…. The new Golf R is a lightning quick monster
So I have a mk7 gti (autobahn) that I bought in jan of 2017. It is a 6mt, as I didn't know much about the dsg coming from an s2000. A few years back, I went to a hyundai dealer to look at the N, and they wouldn't even let me test drive it. (Still haven't driven one to this day.) The main thing I was jealous of was the VN stock exhaust. Mine sounds similar with the catted downpipe, but the tone isn't as good. The mk7 (i swapped the mk7.5 infotainment) has aged very well. Maybe if used car prices ever calm down, I will look for a used VN dct for specific daily activities if I end up with a bit of a commute as I'll still have my GTI to scratch the manual itch.
Nice comparison. Interesting to hear you like tall gearing in 2nd. I prefer short gearing in at least 2nd and third. Maybe if I was concerned about lap times on a very technical small track or auto cross or if you are commuting in stop and go traffic. I am just talking about the fun factor and for me that means shifting a good bit on the road. Good job.
It's sad this guy has only driven his VN 5k miles. Had he driven it longer he'd be addicted to the VN's hyper torquey 2nd gear that pulls like few other cars can do from the factory!
Honest question: I'm dying to get a Manual and I'm at the point of looking at used Veloster Ns (I just can't get past daily using GTI's horrid info system). How's the Veloster treating you so far? Are they reliable, or do they have hidden issues after a few years?
I have the same car as you Hansen and I live in Eastern PA. Maybe our paths will cross someday. I love my VN. I have mine on all-season Michelin Pilots on 18" Rial rims. Once the weather turns she will have the 19" Pirelli's back on.
I haven't found a better tire for the VN than the stock ones. I'm running PS4's now cause I can't get PZero in Puerto Rico, and they're ridiculous to ship from the states. Have u found any other brand that is similar to the PZero? A buddy runs Petlas tires on his mini and swears by them but I'm not sure cause I've never heard of them and they seem too cheap ($125) to be good.
@@Sie84yv Just saw this. My P Zeros are still intact since I only run them during warm weather. When it comes time to replace them I may well put Michelin Pilot PS4's on them. I really like the all seasons during off season on the smaller rims. Over 23k miles and not one single complaint or problem.
I’ve leased a 14’ and 17’ GTI and loved them both, however in another online review, the reviewers both said this new GTI in the manual has a rev limiter at 4K? Is that true?
Very great comparison of the 2 cars I heard that the VW GTI infotame is very hard and looks great but dislike in some areas like A/C, Volume no buttons ect.. I’m in Jersey been trying to get a Veloster N for every
After driving the Veloster N, I really wish I had purchased the N instead. The N feels so much more planted, inspires more confidence and the way it pulls out of corners is pretty crazy for a fwd car.
I would never find myself in love w/capacitive touch buttons....I loved Mk4 GTI 1.8t (despite the "hate"), but the car, for me was nearly flawless. It was't fast, but it "never lost". Even after 141k miles, it was going well. I looked at 2019 VWs (Mk7 GTI & Alltrack) and I was perplexed they felt the same as my '04, but were less raw overall than even my moderately tame GTI. I wanted more raw and passed on VW products and looked at Veloster-N, BRZ, WRX, etc. Ended up in a WRX because a Great Dane won't fit in the back seat of a BRZ. The Veloster-N was a close 3rd (along w/the Civic Si), but my Hyundai dealer (in 2019) was being unreasonable for Veloster-N test drives like it was a $80k car and I was some kid kicking tires (I was older than the salesman)....
Hi what's happening that's awesome Volkswagen GTI and the four door I don't need to worry about folding the driving seat forward & pulling it up but the veloster N has all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start and I've changed out the spoiler N perhaps they can change out the Mufflers and maybe it'll sound louder & thanks for sharing your videos with me 👋👍🤔🙂♥️
Ill take GTI because gti is an iconic car it has a name already people knows the GTI ..Veloster N its just new kid jn the block not a lot of people knows veloster N plus the reputation of Hyundai is still a lot of people scared to buy Korean cars and there’s some recalls in N CARS of hyundai. so ill take GTI all day long..GTI is famous iconic car especially in Europe..
This really comes down to preference. The GTI has a long history of being the hothatch that other companies have to compare against. The history is behind the GTI, and with every generation, it’s gets better, but by no means is the GTI trying to be the most aggressive hothatch. It’s the grown up hothatch, that gives its buyers a lot of “bang for your buck” in terms of performance, fit and finish, comfort, and technology. The Veloster N is also great, but there is zero history behind it. Hyundai had to make it more aggressive and more powerful than the GTI, because if it wasn’t, nobody would have bought it, considering it’s a Hyundai. So Hyundai had to make it more fun in terms of performance to gain attraction, and in that, Hyundai did a great job. It sounds great, it looks great, it performs great, and so far it’s also proven to be pretty reliable. As far as modifying is concerned, the GTI wins hands down. Mod for mod, the GTI gains much more in performance over the Veloster N. The MK7/7.5 GTI is a complete monster when tuned and modified, of which there isn’t a single other hothatch still in the market, that makes as much power gains over its stock power levels, than the GTI does, so in that, the GTI wins, but if keeping both car stock, the Veloster N is the funner car to drive.
Nobody gives a flying f about history, do you think I look at history when I buy car, I buy what is fun and affordable, gti is for old folks veloster N is more for young generation who wants to take it to the track, gti is just boring fish looking car. Golf R is way better
You definitely a butt hurt because Hyundai who everyone things is a shitty company made something that's much more fun than gti, and i30 and i20 N models that are better than gti. You're not a true car enthusiast, you're more of a brand loyal fanboy who gets but heart when other companies comes out with something that's better than what you have in the segment. Veloster N looks better sounds better performance and handles better cost less and the only downside is that it's new so it doesn't have huge aftermarket unlike gti that's been around since 200 B.C. I see them everyday at least one, that alone makes me not want to get one. You haven't driven VN, but hurt fanboy
I miss my Veloster N, I had a 2020 black with red trim. It cost $34 thousand I paid it off. and then with 17 thousand miles the dealership gave me 28 thousand I think it held the value pretty good. Now I put all that money on a Subaru STI diamond edition.
Just the type of video I was looking for. It’s so damn hard to choose a vehicle in this class. Would love to see you compare the elentra N to these vehicles. In regards to winter driving is anyone if these better than the other? How has the veloster been? Throw a set of winters on an I’ll be ok either way?
What I got out of this was how awesome the Mitsubishi EVOs were and how much I miss them. Goddammit, WRC why did you have to start sucking and depriving us of homoligation specials. We finally get another one, the GR Yaris, and people act like Jesus has risen from the dead because it's so much better than anything else.
I have a 2020 Veloster N, and my friend shorter gearing is a plus in a manual transmission car because it makes you shift more and that's more fun and that's why we buy a manual transmission taller during means less shifting Less Fun Les driver involvement and engagement something to remember. You should have kept your Evo 9. That's why I have a deposit down on a Lotus Emira and not a Porsche GT4, because the GT4 has super tall gearing, meaning less shifting and less fun.
Great video man. I always find some smaller reviewers and they just seem to be rambling, but you did a very cohesive review/comparison. I wouldn’t get a VN because of the shitty interior, but I would consider an EN.
@@shijima_ending I've had 2 Hyundais and 2 VWs in my life. One VW had the waterpump break twice and the turbo, fortunately under warranty. The only thing that happened to one my Hyundais was a bad one bad coil pack and a dead battery.
Hardtops are boring. If you want to have real fun then consider the Mini Cooper S convertible. It's the one car that can do it all. It has two doors (like a fun car should). You can drop the top. Seats four people. Plenty of room for the driver and passenger. Handles like a go-cart. Looks retro cool. Lot's of colors to choose from. 3 or 4 cylinder engine options. Best bang for the buck.
I like minis but im 6 3 and broad shouldered so miata as well just not the best comfort wise. Plus once u get up there on miles mini can be an absolute mess
@@Ahnilationz Then you never drove a Mini. It can easily handle a 6 foot 3 inch driver with broad shoulders. Once you are up there in miles, sell it and get another one.
Every single UA-camr that has driven both prefers the N. If only GTI fanboys would drive a VN, they'd be able to accept objective reality: N drives and performs better, has better user interface, and costs much less than an equally optioned GTI. To get adaptive dampers as the VN has standard u have to spend nearly $40k on a GTI that is still slower!
@@realjsh Sure, if u wanna stare at your dashboard and useless infotainment, go for it. Most hot hatch buyers prefer to drive their cars than look at how pretty they are. Again, drive one and you'll see why EVERY mayor big hitter in UA-cam like Doug Demuro, Matt Farah, even Road & Track, Car & Driver, and Motor Trend magazines prefer the cheaper better performing N over the pretty (overpriced) GTI. When u drive a VN you'll understand
@@realjsh Then the slower, pricier, pretty car is your thing and that's great. I am a pharmaceutical executive and enjoy driving fast cars that also make noise and that's my thing. Most Doctors I visit and random people at the gas station compliment my car and the racing blue color. Nobody ever noticed me driving anything special when I drove my wife's MK6. VN is just a better car in every performance metric, and that's what matters to those of us who love driving above looks. As ridiculous as the Type R looks, I'd buy it if it weren't as overpriced as the GTI and Golf R are. The Golf R and Type R perform slightly better but cost $12k more than a VN and I'd rather invest that in stocks
Volkswagen dropped the ball when they stopped offering the 2 door. It was much more sporty than the 4 doors. The magic is lost for us enthusiasts who chose the GTI over other 2 door coupe sports cars.
Dude you might want to check yourself. Industry professionals of all kinds routinely note VW's reliability problems in general...right in line with the Audi marque, which is no surprise. Parts are more expensive as well. The Veloster is far from perfect but Hyundai backs their products with an amazing warranty, made moreso by the fact that the majority of owners don't need to use it.

Great review. Nice save at 20:15 btw ;) haha
Very great comparison of the 2 cars I heard that the VW GTI infotame is very hard and looks great but dislike in some areas like A/C, Volume no buttons ect.. I’m in Jersey been trying to get a Veloster N for every
Good luck with your quest to find one. These cars are fantastic!
If you want to take a cross country trip there are 20 N's available in the NW, many at MSRP. I flew to Oregon to get mine.
@@CTF33 thank you for the information
Which one is better in the winter?
@2:50 wow, look at all the swirls in that paint already.
anyone have an idea on how much HP gain a full stage 2 setup would be?? my guess around 80hp is that far off???
Great Video
What kind of tires are on the GTI? What do you recommend personally for cold weather/occasional snow/ice ? Mid tier*
These ones were sottozeros. They’re pretty decent on the GTI. Blizzaks are pretty good, and I’ve had pretty good success with Michelin x-ice
GTI only really comes alive with a tune... and man do they come alive!
How is the aftermarket for the N?
I would like to see you remake this video in summer to get a better driving experience.
Well, awesome car. Didn't know that you can't change the mode you are in while driving. Possible in Germany though...
The driving modes can be changed while driving, but the custom mode settings can only be tweaked while stationary.
“The GTI, minus everything you touch on the inside, is the best GTI ever made”
Yeah about that user interface... hard pass.
GTI better deal n Canada and just feels more solid. 🇨🇦
Do you get the turbo flutter with just the AEM intake?
Yup!
Both are cool little cars that we will probably not see on the road in 10 years time.
The Veloster N has a 10 year PT warranty so pretty sure they'll still be around in 10 years.
I ❤ gti
Vw gti is an amazing car with the new mk8 but the Star Trek controls are horrible
Trying to get our hands on an Elantra N right now. Would be a fantastic comparison!
If veloster laid off 3door I would go veloster.
What I got out of this was how awesome the Mitsubishi EVOs were and how much I miss them. Goddammit, WRC why did you have to start sucking and depriving us of homoligation specials. We finally get another one, the GR Yaris, and people act like Jesus has risen from the dead because it's so much better than anything else.
the only louder thing is the sound other then that noth
Nope! Never licked any cars made by Hyundai. The GTI drives so much better. Hands down. I’d never waste my money on a Korean car.
Man, your strange way of using prepositions is kinda freaking me out.
Picked up a VN in January! Great comparison, I’d also choose it over the GTI anyday
Great video man. I always find some smaller reviewers and they just seem to be rambling, but you did a very cohesive review/comparison. I wouldn’t get a VN because of the shitty interior, but I would consider an EN.
Comparing a Hyundai with a Volkswagen? Wow 😮
Yeah really, the reliability of the VW is garbage and VN has a 10 year PT warranty.
As a Hyundai and VW owner, I can confirm that Hyundai is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more reliable than VW.
not sure about that. i’ve heard some absolutely horrendous things from hyundai dealers ^^
Once you are up there in miles, sell it and get another one.
very similar ?????? its a joke
How about you cannot get anyone into the back seat. Or the fit and finish is 100x better in the VW.
@@Sie84yv I have driven one. I’m not interested in a loud car- I’m 45 and a business professional.
Imagine pulling up to a clients in that car or a funeral. Lol
Buttons and dials are more user friendly, silly, it’s 2023, get a grip.
Sorry, there is nothing in this review that would convince me that the Veloster is either a good or competitive car.
Better than that VW lmao, faster too.
Yeah thats cool and all but one is a Hyundai 🤢
Korean or German engineering? Easily the German
I'm almost certain the VN was designed and engineered by a team of Germans...
Jokes on you cause they are both German lol
Ha ha I also meant built in Germany. There are plenty of German engineered VWs made in Mexico I wouldn't buy. That Korean car is no way a German car
