I wish the Civic had a decent exhaust and white wheels!! If North America got the i30 N (un Europe the Elantra GT is sold as the i30 and they get an N version for those who don't know) I would choose that in a blink of an eye. But I am conflicted like Yakub.
I’m just in awe of how you guys filmed and edited this. It took me a few minutes before I realized that you are in separate cars, yet still having the same back-and-forth conversation your videos are known for. Superb job!
Im in my late 40's, I wanted something sporty to drive everyday. My kids are grown, I'm single and I wanted something 2 door that wasn't real over the top. I bought a veloster with the dct and couldn't be happier. I had muscle cars in my 20's and 30's, mustangs, camaros, a 05 gto, love my veloster the best.
the middle exhaust on the Type R isn't even a real exhaust pipe. Theres only two openings in the muffler coming off the back so the middle exhaust pipe is just a closed pipe.
Tyler Hurwitt your wrong the middle pipe is not closed off from the inside the middle is opened the fumes go in and rebound back and thru the left and right pipes its to minimise drone and noise & and all three tips are opened get it right buddy.
Yea people seem to be missing the Type r is a 35k car with a crazy dealer markup when you cN get the Hyundai fully loaded for 29. Put a tube on it would make just as much power as the type r
I bought a Veloster N and have put about 2,000 miles on it so far and I have to say it is the most fun car I have ever driven. The exhaust, handling, and how surprisingly hard it pulls is just pure euphoria. In the US we miss out on a lot of the creature comforts but still so worth it for me!
Totally agree with you. Can you imagine 25 years ago if I Said that Hyundai had just launched a car to compete against the EK9 type R? People would laugh. Hard.
Yea I went with the N. I always think of that quote from fast n furious "what you think I'm gonna let you roll in a Hyundai" but I've been paying attention to Hyundai/Kia and they have passion in there cars I see in them what Honda had in the 90s. I mean I love the type R but what has Honda done in the last ten years except for the NSX and Type R not much I think they are finally waking up again.
@@nstylemotorsportsracing1471 I think of the exact quote and I too believe Hyundai has passion in there cars. I've got a 2018 Elantra Sport and an 03 Tiburon (lol). I also had a genesis for a short period.
Im in university and i have already decided that as soon as i graduate, i am getting a Veloster N. That being said great comparison video! But the exhaust, the infotainment and the price difference makes the choice easy for me!
You'll love the Velsoter N. We drove one on Laguna Seca a month ago and its one of the best fwd 4 cylinders Ive driven hard. Even cruising around town the suspension isnt too harsh. One of the dealers back home in Colorado was allocated 5 of them and they all sold under MSRP, cant say the same for the type R....
I just purchased 2019 Veloster N WHITE. I LOVE THIS CAR. Bang for your buck, hands down beats the Civic Type R. I enjoy watching your videos. I'm a 45 yr old kid. So cars have no age limit!
Beats the Type R hands down? I wouldn't go that far, but the Veloster N is really cool too. The Type R is everything Honda does well in one car, though. That said, Hyundai/KIA are disrupting everything with tons of really great cars.
Oh man...envious, or should I say 'N-vious'. Great job and enjoy...such an amazing ride. Going for the Genesis GV80 myself when it comes to Canada (might wait until year 2...I don't buy cars the year they come out)
I absolutely love both of these cars, I’ve honestly been deciding between both these cars for the past 5/6 months but I think I’m going to probably go with the Veloster N due to price, I absolutely love the type r tho. The veloster is so unique too that no one will know what I’m driving so that’ll have a cool effect. Thank you guys for the awesome reviews and I appreciate all the work you guys put into these videos!
I've been going back and forth between these two as well, and I think the Veloster gets my vote. The styling is more subtle compared to the Type R, the exhaust pops are fun, and I really like the refresh done interior wise. Also, prices on used Type R's are still too high here in the U.S.. If I could get a Type R under 30k, I would be on it though. Thank God hot hatches still come in manuals.
"How does FWD oversteer?" You tapped the brake when you felt the understeer and shifted the weight back to the front of the car. Once the rear end got light under braking, it started to come around. Source: Did that in my Honda once
Hector Fonseca the difference is about the same in the states. Type-R is $9,000 more at msrp, but dealers are marking them up at least $5,000, so it’s about $14,000 more than the Veloster N. The Veloster N really seems like the better buy, especially with how much better it looks
Honda Type R is an amazing car. Bella International is an awful dealer and those suckers have exclusiveness. That's why they mark up the price so high. The same goes with Trebol Motors. I have an 2016 WRX STI Limited and it cost me little more than 40K. Now you know how much they sell that car in PR, Right?
@Niq ger Lel No es pq sea Honda o BMW o el carro que sea son los dealers de carro que estan elevando los presios para ganar mas y eso hace que el consumidor se aleje no se porque las companias de autos no se meten y paran esta clase de practica
@@Tsalinger what are you talking about? These things are really well made. Not so long ago you would laugh comparing a Hyundai to the Type R. Now it feels normal. Happy for Hyundai and how far they've come! If i were to sell my STi and get one of these it would be the Veloster N. I love the Civic, it's also a great car, but despite its looks and everything it feels like the safe choice in this comparison.
In 2 years, it would worth half of its original value. Good luck, and the lease payment on the N is actually higher than the FK8. In March 2019, a used FK8 was auctioned off at 38k. It lost less than 10% of the value after 1 year
@@cococly what are you guys talking about the depreciation has gotten better most sonata sedans today stay near their MSRP so stop spouting BS. Goodluck finding a civic type r with no dealership markup
I owned a GTI in my 20's, added full exhaust, suspension, wheels, tires, tune etc. I'm now in my 30s and would take the Veloster N. I don't have the extra cash or time for those kind of mods anymore haha and the N looks like it wouldn't need a thing.
It's truly a great car man, way better than all the heat all these Honda fan boys are putting on it. Course if I spent $10-$30k+ markup on it, I'd be butthurt too when the Civic is barely edging out the N stock v stock. Once their modified, the N blows the doors off a Type R (modified v modified)
@mojo mojo on top of that, I have test driven both the Type R as well as the Veloster N. The price for a Type R around me was also highly marked up as well, dealers taking nothing less than $60-$70k which is just a complete rip off for it. I'll gladly take my $30k N. Even if it is only a touch slower. The setup is there for the N to be the quicker car around tracks. It truly is a corner rascal. And finally, Honda for some reason I just guess figured, "hey since everyone that buys a civic typically rices it out, let's just take care of that from the factory." Cuz the styling is a bit hideous (however, that is a matter of personal opinion and taste). Lemme guess though, you own a Civic Type R right?
I'm in my 30s and test drove a veloster N yesterday and absolutely loved it. I'm mini trucker at heart so being different is what I want. Hopefully I'll be picking up an N in a few months.
I’m 35 have a 2018 Championship White Type R. Not going to lie, I’m a little jealous of the configurability and exhaust of the N. I’m hoping Hondata adds the ability to enable exhaust pops. Might also look into a Remus Exhaust kit. As far as the looks, I honestly couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks. I’m too busy enjoying myself.
@@Mike-dy8sj Your an idiot. My Type R with a Milltek Non Resonated exhaust sounds amazing. Oh and my exhaust gets pops and crackles with no tune or downpipe.
I've actually been considering both of these for my next car in a year or two. I think I'd go N over R for the savings and because I'm so accustomed to the Hyundai infotainment, plus the styling of the Type R is still a little too much for me. But then again, I'm still not crazy about the three door thing either. It's tough, I'd have to drive both of them, and that would probably make it even tougher. Then again, I'm in my 30s, I should probably just get a Golf R.
Yeah I've been trying to decide between the N and Type R as well, I would probably go with the N mainly because the price difference. Can't get a used Type R under 30K here in the states. Golf R seems a bit too plain for me, but I respect looking like an adult.
I own a Veloster N and my friend owns a Civic Type R. They are so similar in races just because the Veloster picks up faster but the Type R is faster in the long run. I put a after market RaceChip into the Veloster and now I'm tons faster and win almost every race.
I think the veloster with the type r engine and keeping all the features and sound will be the hottest hatch ever specially that system that lets you customize the tune of the car
I bought a Veloster N Pref. Pack in performance blue in January here in Florida (United States). My passenger side visor also fails the visor test! Other than that, the Veloster N is amazingly fun to drive, the exhaust makes the car stand out. With the soon to be released upgrade OEM Hyundai parts you can customize the N to you personal tastes. Can’t wait! Also Hyundai sent me a survey from the engineers on how my N was preforming. I told them that your Straight Pipes pre production video in the N sold me on the car. (I had been following the i30N and did a lot of research prior) but how cool is it to see Hyundai let you guys take a pre production N for a test ride! I asked them to let you do more pre production rides. Thank you for the great reviews of all types of cars.

I had a very bad day at office today. I mean really bad that made me doubt myself.I sat and watched this video for 25 mins and it felt like therapy ! Keep doing what you are doing. It’s fun watching your reviews. I am in my 30’s and I would prefer the Type R !
@@jaygorman4282 so get an Oldsmobile as a daily driver to offset the civic R. Remember "it's not your dad's Oldsmobile"....it's more like your sleazy uncles. Lol
I have a 2015 WRX, but I've always wondered what it was like to daily a Veloster. Type R styling seems a little too crazy for me but it's only a few hops away from a STI tbh. I love the auto rev matching, keep up the great vids!
@@BlitzzGames Its very Honda in how it feels - precise, tightly engineered, but it's much more muscular and substantial feeling in control weights and very very good body control than I was expecting. Had it 1.5yrs and the ride still blows my mind every day. Its potentially a bit faster in a straight line but splitting hairs maybe. It's more of a chassis car. Great great driving position. And bigger than an STi for sure if that matters to you. Also better on gas :-) - I'm in Canada so getting about 10.0L/100km about 24mpg city without trying.
@@roxyroller25 Dang really? I just blew like $2k on some upgrades for my car, it will all seem in vain if I test drive the Veloster and like it ugghhhh
Doesn't make sense...how many people in their 30's can really afford these cars much less people in their 20's who are just trying to establish themselves in life! Economic reality of it for the average person in the UK, is that you are probably going to be in your 40's and 50's before you have accumulated enough assets and spare cash before you can comfortably afford these. Otherwise you'll be the 30 year old living in a rented flat driving around in a relatively "expensive" car, and with no savings. Obviously, if you are doing better than average this is not an issue.
OMG, test drove the Veloster N yesterday and was blown away! The way it pins u back on your seat, the sound, and the brilliant rev match option is just amazing!!!
Watching this vid in my 2019 Civic Type R Aegean Blue....both great choices that come down to specific driver preferences......but that Veloster N exhaust🤯....oooh weeeh
I've driven both and ended up getting veloster. Was 10k cheaper with half the miles. Ctr inside was so much better minus the e brake and had more top end
The Civic Type R and Veloster N are two great cars They are on two levels The Type R is mean to be the track king while the Veloster N is meant to be the street king Either way I’ll get both the Civic Type R and Veloster N
MemoryLeak what I mean here is that the Veloster N was more as a GTI rival while the Civic Type R as a Golf R rival Either way they are both great on the street and track

What sucks is dealers, at least in Georgia, still want 5k-8k on top of msrp. Then we don't get the next gen type-r because no one bought it. Same thing happened with the focus rs. I hate markups.
@@NvrchFotia Nice! what state? GA across the board has some of the smallest discounts for cars. I was going to get a type r and looked for 2 months, I went to 5 different dealers and all wanted over 40k. I'm not a huge honda guy and have no problem keeping the 2017 gti autobahn for the long haul. Decided to get a jetski instead.
Man, you guys really are the best car reviewers on UA-cam. I hate to say this cause I'm a fan of the gooseman as well, but you guys just keep getting better and better.
I bought the Veloster N, but I wish I had bought the Type R. I enjoy my VN but after driving a Type R hard on a back road there really is no comparison between the two. The Type R is much, much faster; more than the HP and TQ figures suggest. My VN only managed 217 wheel HP on a chassis dyno and a stock Type R on the same dyno made 286. That's a huge difference.
Did you get the Veloster N with the performance package? 217 is hell of a lot lower than suggested 275 on a spec sheet.... I means that's like on Golf GTI slow....
Great video. Thank you for all the honest insight, and while I adore the Type R, here in euroland we get the i30N Fastback. I just saw one in the flesh recently on the Autobahn and damn it’s a looker!!
7 months later... I went to my local Honda and Hyundai dealers last weekend. The 2019 CTR is still being sold with ADM of +$3k at many dealers for $40k I did find one in championship white for $38k. All of the Hyundai dealers are willing to negotiate on the Veloster N w/PP to about $28k. I agree that in absolute values the CTR is the better car on the street, the track, and has better practicality. The seats are better in the CTR as is rear leg room/head room and a better trunk. The Veloster N has the better steering wheel, exhaust, and better configurability with N custom. For $10k savings it seems like a no brainer except the CTR is keeping way better resale value so it's a tossup. I do like the external looks of the Veloster N in the performance blue over the CTR but thats just my preference.
Enjoyed the video. I've been going back and forth with the CTR for the past few years. First it was dealer mark up, 5-10K in Atlanta. The rear wing , overly bolstered seats for daily driving. Now the CTR has a suede steering wheel . Wished that Honda would offer option delete or offer a milder styled version with the same suspension/engine. Hoping that Hyundai will offer the i30 N here in the US. For those blowing me off because I'm geezer I own a '91 NSX & a '05 WRX.
Great review. Both are excellent performance compact cars- a dying breed sadly. I spent weeks shopping both but ultimately went with a slightly used CTR- avoiding the absurd dealer mark ups. Researching both cars ad nasueum, the Hyundai depreciation was pretty steep and quality issues after warranty were the deal breakers for me. The seats in the Honda are also the best I’ve ever sat in- they’re amazing. After 2 track days and blistering cars twice it’s price (including 2 N Hyundais that were right on my tail) the CTR was brilliant and confirmed my decision. Ultimately, it’s a personal choice and both are great fun for anyone wanting an engaging, connected driving experience.
Bought my Racing Red Veloster N with Performance package. Haven’t looked back since. Still breaking her in but enjoying it to the max as I approach 600 miles.

I bought a veloster with the dct and couldn't be happier. I had muscle cars in my 20's and 30's, mustangs, camaros, a 05 gto, love my veloster the best.
3 doors, or 3 exhaust pipes. Hmmmm decisions decisions.
Lol
Hahaha
the middle exhaust on the Type R isn't even a real exhaust pipe. Theres only two openings in the muffler coming off the back so the middle exhaust pipe is just a closed pipe.
@@Laz4Life3 theres a reason for that middle pipe. google it.
Tyler Hurwitt your wrong the middle pipe is not closed off from the inside the middle is opened the fumes go in and rebound back and thru the left and right pipes its to minimise drone and noise & and all three tips are opened get it right buddy.
Veloster N is hands down a better deal. I can get one fully loaded right now for $29k out the door. Type Rs are still being stupidly marked up to $40k

Yea people seem to be missing the Type r is a 35k car with a crazy dealer markup when you cN get the Hyundai fully loaded for 29. Put a tube on it would make just as much power as the type r
And there’s a lot of used type rs I wonder why
I bought a Veloster N and have put about 2,000 miles on it so far and I have to say it is the most fun car I have ever driven. The exhaust, handling, and how surprisingly hard it pulls is just pure euphoria. In the US we miss out on a lot of the creature comforts but still so worth it for me!
Gotta give props to Hyundai. 10 years ago Hyundai wasn't even in the same league in performance.
A little longer, Hyundai Genesis came out in 2008, and those are still great today.
@@MarshalBeard oh yeahhhhh, but for this fwd to take on a car that's so highly regarded, it's impressive.

@@mandomaldonado4498 stinger? Nice!
@Jackson Whitlow No they have not. Their engines have been having horrible failures in the Sonatas and the turbo engines don't fare so great either.
In my area I see a few Velosters. Not the N version but the Turbo.
I have only seen one Type R in my life.

In Puerto Rico the difference between the N and the Type R is $15k!!
Hmm great now I'll get one from there and bring it to Dominican Republic just at a small water channel of distance ^^

If its available where you live get the i30N, basically the same car just better looking
Shums Ghost I don’t think any type r owner is butthurt plus you can’t do a modded vs modded opinion when there’s a ton of mods
The antisocial 1 they look sick asf

I've actually been considering both of these for my next car in a year or two. But then again, I'm still not crazy about the three door thing either. It's tough, I'd have to drive both of them, and that would probably make it even tougher.
217 HP sounds like you didn't go for the performance pack option which boosts the crank HP to 275.

Absolutely loved this comparison, you should do these more often! Keep it up guys

Dat IN-tro is getting spicy nice. Production top notch much like, such wow!
