Bath Greenpark, It wouldn't be the Somerset & Dorset without a 7F making an appearance. Over the summer Saturday's Bath Green station and any spare track would be jammed with coaches bringing and returning holiday makers. Looking back I wonder how any trains were able to move. All long before the car took over. When we did get a car,Dad stopped at a little store at the top of Devonshire Bank for icecreams ( Wall's, Waffers ) Mum, Dad, my 2 brothers and myself and 1 Box Brownie. Magic days. Thank You for this. It brought back many memories. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Thank you. A wonderful visit to Bath and the S&DJR. Your modelling skills combined with the meticulous recreation of typical workings from the period, really bring to life a time I lived through and, at times, witnessed @ scale 1:1, just slices, glimpses, scents and sounds. The whole panoply was lost to bean counters and the inevitable passage of time. But the realisation in miniature underscores the loss to us as a nation of earlier less frenetic times, just after surviving WW2.

As always, fabulous entertainment. It is a joy to see what folk do in gauges other than the one that one is used to (N for me) particularly when such care and effort has been lovingly given to the project. Perhaps one day, when you have some time, we could have a closer look and some of your excellent rolling stock.
    Many thanks
    Stay healthy and safe

Thanks and I'll see what can be done.
Just understanding where all that freight went to and from is a huge and fascinating subject of its own. 45 freights trains in and out of Bath in a 24 hour period kept both yards very busy. I'm hoping to get hold of an S&D gaurds journal which lists each wagon load and destination. Now that would be some great bedtime reading.

I must check that one out.
Yes the banking scenes are possibly unique in model form and I find very satisfying doing them. The 4F 44560
I converted last year to R/C battery and sound operation which makes it even easier and certainly more realistic. I've just acquired another 7F kit and plan to build this with R/C, battery and sound and then these scenes up Devonshire Bank will really be hard to beat.

I never tire of watching your videos - what a fantastic layout, and everything runs so smoothly in 7mm. Just inspires me in my long term aim to model Midford - in 4mm.
I've been fascinated by the S&D since some friends who lived outside Bath took me for a walk along the trackbed there. I'd have loved to have seen it when it was up and running. Your model is the "next best thing"!

    • @bathgreenpark2485

I would encourage you to crack on and build your Midford. Its such a small little station that belies the fact that 12 coach double headed expresses rushed through there.

@@bathgreenpark2485 ...and "rattled the signal box windows" according to Mike Arlett! The space I've got available will rather limit my ability to replicate a full-length train, and I'm figuring out the construction processes involved in a viaduct which will need to have a bit more curvature than the original.I'm told that in the real world of engineering, "tapering" arches is not a proposition.
I was at Midford station site one summer Saturday afternoon some years ago, having walked from Limpley Stoke following the old Camerton line where the "Titfield Thunderbolt" was filmed, when a bloke came over from the "Anchor and Hope" car park and asked if this was an "old railway line".
I think he only half-believed me when I told him that it was the Somerset & Dorset, and if we'd have been standing where were at that time of day any summer afternoon up to 1962 we'd have been witnessing a succession of long double-headed expresses full of holiday-makers heading down the line to Bournemouth!
I first fell in love with Midford in 1982, when some friends who lived just south of Bath took me for a walk there, and we came along Lower Twinhoe Lane to see that majestic viaduct striding across the beautiful valley.

Hi, always a pleasure to watch a new video from you, I just love the narration you include with each clip. Did I see a few new camera angles in this video, if so, very nice they were too. I notice many of the more important passenger trains seem to use Platform 1 for arrivals and departures, was this platform longer than Platform 2 or was their another reason, or maybe no reason at all we know of today. Great video as ever, very enjoyable, best regards Dave.

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  4 роки тому

Thanks and I do think its important for the viewer to understand what they are seeing. This is not random trains running round and round but a railway working to the real timetable.
Platform 1 was the longer of the two and so where ever possible the expresses used P1. Even then the last 2 or 3 coaches would overhang the Avon river bridge and the gaurd on these trians was under standing instructions to go through these carriages informing passengers alighting at Bath to move through the train.

@@bathgreenpark2485 I know how much work goes into checking through old working timetables, I did it once to get an idea of trains on the ECML in the late 50's early 60's, it is very much appreciated that you have done so much work to get the videos so realistic..............Thanks very much.

Modelling a real location brings with it the requirement to run the actual trains and is my Raison D'etre for the railway

Green Bay Wisconsin USA says Hi!! May I suggest a GoPro video camera on a flatcar ahead of the engine, to give an engineers eye level view of your layout, track, signals, and scenery. Nearly 35 years ago in 1984 I used my Kodak Super8mm movie camera attached to an All-Nations Co.depressed center flatcar, to take home movies of the Appleton, WI., Paper Valley "O" scale model railroad club. But only 2 years later, the Club was evicted, and the x-C&NW RR station was razed by the land pwner. So now, my home movies are extremely RARE!!!!!

Thanks. For the videos I do them all myself. Its actually easier that way as I can retake some shots several times over to obtain the best sequence. for multiple movements in shot.
When running to timetable there is an operator for the fiddle yards; I tend to act as signal man at Green Park (the Fat Controller); Green Park main line driver, Midland Bridge shunter; Green Park shed & S&D yard shunter; Writhlington Colliery and main line driver. The Fiddle yard operator is the key sending out and receiving S&D line trains AND Midland line trains - a very busy job
