  • The railway is based in the 1950's and 60's up to closure. The track layout is as close as can be in a model and includes Green Park station, both S&D and Midland sheds, Midland Bridge and S&D yards, Bath Junction, Devonshire Bank and tunnel, Lyncombe Vale, Combe Down tunnel, Midford station and viaduct, Writhlington Colliery and exchange sidings and is run with correct stock and to timetable for the period

    Never tire of watching this awesome model railway. I returned to Bath in 1960 so was lucky to see the last 6 years of the real thing.

    I have to say, this is fantastic. Not least because of the accurate speeds rather than 0 to 100 mph in 1 second

    Superb model and video. Loved the Gresley stock and the pigeon special.
    A 3F piloting a Spam Can - it doesn't get more S & D than that! Thank you for posting.

      Thanks. Pleased with the NE set. Its made up with Hattons Gresley, Sparmac, Gresley, Ian Kirk Gresley articulated set a Thompson brake end and now one of the new Ellis Clark Thompson coaches. You can see the additional marron Thompson in the set later in the video.
      Yes a Bournemouth allocated West Country and a Templecombe 3F pilot. A perfect combination for a Summer Saturday on the S&D

    Thanks for sharing as always. A superb reproduction of Bath Green Park and the trains that used to serve the old S&DJr and the Midland of course. It doesn`t get any better than this and I always look forward to seeing the S&D in action. Thanks again.

    Wow...! All I can say is, 'Bravo Sir'! What a layout! The S&D closed 3 years before I was born, so I never got to see it. I have family in the Radstock and Midsomer Norton areas and remember playing on the trackbed in my childhood. I have just started in O Gauge but could only hope to model something as amazing as this! Great work, thanks for sharing.

    Elegantly filmed and a fine representation of Green Park, the yard and sheds. A lot of hard work has gone into this project on my favourite railway which I travelled on (on the Pines) as a child. Loved the Gresley coaches often seen on the line. I did not know that any of the Manchester trains terminated at Victoria.

    Stunning layout. I recognise the fell chuffs of the Train-Tech Sound Capsule. I don't know where I hid mine. But, I'm sure a heavy footed tread will remind me all too soon.

Brilliant, very much appreciate the effort involved and inspiration for me to build more of my own locos of type for the line.

    Excellent as always. Thanks for posting. I'd never noticed the opening in the station roof before - always wondered how you reached in there to uncouple - now I know.

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому

      Ah. Its more than an opening. The Combe Down tunnel track cuts across the platforms. Not ideal but the only way I could work the whole track layout. Its not too obvious but it creates a natural opening to be able to reach in and uncouple locos at the platform ends

    What a joyous and heartwarming sequence. I felt as if I was there ! I believe the 7F was ordered straight off the drawing board by Mr Clayton as Sir Henry Fowler was not capable of designing something for this grand railway. Heavy on coal and water but it did the job !

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому

      They certainly did. In 1959 and withdrawal of the first 7F they tested a WD 2-8-0 over the S&D. It failed with flying colours. Inadequate braking

    Superb layout of a mush missed railway along with the Waverly route and the Great Central one of the worst decisions of the Beaching era what a great diversionary route this would be today?!

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому

      Yes a great shame although in fairness the S&D was an expensive line to operate due to the steep banks requiring double heading and banked freights and so with little local traffic generated on the line it was kept going by through traffic which was falling away rapidly after the 2nd World War so sadly it was an inevitable casualty

    Real interesting to see 53802 hauling a freight train to Templecombe tender first!

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому

      Its rather a might have been scenario. A bit of modellers license.
      Normally they would go south chimney first and then on the return run from Templecmobe would stop at Evercreech Junction and turn on the table there to be chimney first for the northerly run over the Mendips.
      I have read that occasionally on really hot summer days that crews might elect to ignore the stop at Evercreech and save the time for an earlier return into Bath.

      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому +1

      Thanks.
      We lost so many lines in the 60's and unfortunately the S&D was so expensive to operate that it was an inevitable casualty, I'm afraid

    What an incredible model. Brilliant! New subscriber for your page here. Love the captions of the routes the trains were coming and going on.
    I wonder, if the S&D and Midland Lines had remained open, would a modern motive power unit (for example a Class 220 Voyager) do the journey Bournemouth to Man or Sheffield via Bath quicker than the current route via Basingstoke, Reading and Oxford!

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому +1

    A wonderful evocation of the past. Afraid I didn't get to stand where that spotter is at 15:22 until 1978 and there wasn't a Jinty, or any railway to seen any longer. Is the chap reliving those days and if so how superb is that.

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  Рік тому

      I placed that train spotter there as it was a popular position with the local lads. They climbed up the embankment.

    Lovely video, my only memory of the S&D is being taken to Bournemouth West in the summer as a small boy to see the steam trains although I seem to remember seeing green Warships there as well but my memory may be playing tricks it's hard to think it was nearly sixty years ago.
