  • A very varied programme for November. Inevitably 44560 features heavily. The sounds are just so realistic compared to anything I've heard before.
More video of the coal traffic that was the very life blood of the S&D and we see full coal trains from Norton Hill colliery heading north to Bath and then on to Avonmouth power station. Plus the return empties. The Radstock coal fields were moving up to 2 trains a day at the peak.
We also see the first of the new motive power with Peak D12 bringing the Pines Express in from Manchester in the 1961/2 period
    SIT BACK, TURN UP THE
VOLUME AND ENJOY THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF THE S&D

Don't know what it is about this model, but it just seems to be full of so much great atmosphere, really does give one the impression of being back in a time when these trains actually ran. All of the general comings and going of the S&D seem to be captured perfectly. Really makes me wish i could travel back to enjoy the line for myself - not being quite old enough to have seen the real thing for myself. A real pleasure to watch, thank you.

That's very kind. The key for me is to be able to operate the model in the same way as the prototype. Hence the track layout is, as much as possible, an exact replica of Green Park and the key features such as the Two Tunnels, Lyncombe Vale, Midford station & viaduct and Writhlinton Colliery.
I researched the operation of the line from timetables of the 50's and 60's and speak to ex S&D staff and those that new the line well when ever possible to get right down to the small details.

@@bathgreenpark2485 - so appreciate the videos you post of your outstanding layout, thank you. I'd love to know more, is there a history and a track plan to view?

      @@revbigjohnoliver Hi
No history as such except that I started with Templecombe in my previous house but always knew that this was to lead to Bath Green Park and our move to the present house 15 years ago gave me the opportunity to design the railway room. 45' x 15' which sounds enormous but actually I could really have done with another 10'!
There is a layout diagram either on the Forum at the Gauge 0 Guild web site OR one of the videos from 2 years or so ago. I'll have to re view them to see which it is

@@bathgreenpark2485 thank you, I'll have a browse as well. I was privileged to travel from Bristol to Bath, then behind a 9F to Bournemouth West, I still remember the amazing experience. You have helped so many of us to enjoy the sight and sound of this amazing railway.

Brilliant! Well done! You have really created the atmosphere and now the sounds of the S&D. I was at school in the 1950s: my school was on Combe Down and I would often slope off to see the southbound 'Pines' either in Lyncombe Vale or at the south end of Combe Down Tunnel. I once played truant and spent an entire Summer Saturday at Midford - fantastic!
Just a couple of comments. (1) I don't think you would find Southern green coaches used north of Bath, rarely to Bristol. (2) The down distant signals at Bath Junction, which you would expect to be fixed approaching a terminus, were actually cleared if the Bath Station Box home signal was cleared.
    I llok forward to more!

      Thanks.
The whole concept of the railway was to produce as accurately as possible (within the constraints of a model) Bath Green Park as a working railway and to be able to run the actual timetables of the late 50's and early 60's. So ever train/loco movement you see on the model was to be seen on the real thing.

These videos are always outstanding and transport me to time a place that I’ve never been too! Inspirational ideas for my attempt of a S&DJR story in the future. Thanks again!!

Thanks. The S&D was a real switchback with some very steep gradients at up to 1 in 50. S&D footplate men were very experienced and new how far to push a loco knowing how far a dip/downgrade was ahead and an opportunity to recover steam pressure and water ready for the next uphill section. Often referred to as 'mortgaging the boiler'.

With the fiddle yard extension giving me effectively 4 new sidings to play with I've now created two dedicated 18 wagon trains for the coal traffic. One full and one empty. There are 2 flows of 16T mineral wagons running as 'block' trains between Norton Hill colliery and Avonmouth power station and with Wrihtlington colliery serviced by selected passing Evercreech - Bath freights.
So the empty train runs from fiddle yard (Avonmouth power station) to Bath S&D sidings normally by a 4F. Is then taken on down the S&D by a 7F to Midsomer Norton (back to the fiddle yard) where the 7F collects the full mineral train and returns to Bath tender first. The train is shunted into Midland Bride yard and then another 4F takes them on down the Midland line to Avonmouth (the fiddle yard again).
At the last count I had 50+ 16T coal wagons and now need a few more!

Thanks. Interestingly I was running the 'Scottie' old No 75 this afternoon. The loco uses the split axle system with pick ups from one side of the tender and the other side from the loco. There had been an electrical issue between loco and tender that made the loco stutter. Now sorted thanks to Bob Joy and I was giving it a run this afternoon to check all ok.

Yes I enjoyed another cracking collection of trains on the S&D. It is good see the 4F / 7F combination, does that make it an 11F? Does the radio controlled 4F give you more flexibility when banking/double heading, although you need to drive both locos? Interesting to see Prairie 4555, which also visited the North Somerset Branch, which I am modelling in 7mm. And also the Peak on the Pines, I presume it would have started from Manchester, I remember seeing these when I was train spotting as a youngster in Manchester running from Central before the Pines was moved to depart from Piccadilly.

Thanks. Interestingly it is more difficult using the R/C 4F. Co-ordination of starting and stopping is yet to be perfected but will come.
Peak on the Pines. I understand that by 1962 The Pines left Manchester behind one of the new electrics. Taken over by diesel at Birmingham? and then steam from Bath. An interesting journey!
