Hello both, very interesting to watch the cooling system being sorted out. How honest you are mentioning that the flywheel is faulty. A great "project" for someone, as you have done the majority of the work required to put it legally on the road. Best wishes from Lincolnshire.

Considering I paid £1,000 for a "spares or repair" Toyota Yaris of the same age that has been a piece of s**t from day one (and has failed yet again - the heater matrix has now blown), someone is going to get an absolute bargain with this car, even if it does need a DMF. Enjoyed the video, thanks again for my regular Sunday entertainment!

That is a great bit of kit for filling the water system, a must have for working on cars now. I think you have put a fair price on the car with its chequered history on the mileage. Well done Rob for your work on this car and I agree it still looks nice for a 20 year old motor. Thanks for doing a series on this even though it was short it was still interesting. Thanks Rob and Chris for all your videos. 👍👍

Vacuum filling puts a lot of strain on old coolant hoses and other parts such as the heater matrix. Personally i wouldn't do it on a 20 year old car. No need to do it on an E46 anyway, if you know what you are doing.

Loved my 2001 330i touring manual, sold it on with 178k on it. Did everything to that M54 engine myself, full dual Vanos rebuild, Disa rebuild, PCV, thermostat, header tank, oil level sender. Mine had that dual mass chatter occasionally, did 40k didn't get worse. Great engine 👍

Those M54 engines are brilliant. Got a little Sport Editon Compact with the 2.5 straight six, got the uber rare aerodynamic body package on it and it’s all in pistachio green. Only time it broke down on me was when the alternator went. Nearly 150k on the clock, 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and the engine voted best engine in the world 2 year in a row. Fantastic little car for 22 year old.

Tbh you don't need to go through all the rigmarole if vac filling on these engines. Put fan on min, temp on full to open the heater matrix ports and start the little electric heater circuit pump, crack the bleed screw then full it up until you see no bubbles come out then close bleed screw job done. Matter of fact thats the BMW instructions for it.

Apart from the obvious big discrepancy on the mileage I’d say the rest of it isn’t that suspicious. At nearly 20 years old it’s become more of a toy for infrequent summer sunny days than a work horse so 1000 miles a year is what you might expect?

The E46 is a nightmare. Coolant leaks are common, plastic and rubbers go. Rocker cover gaskets go for a past time, wheel speed sensors or ABS pump, The alloy wheels will be cracked, MV2s are well known for it. Made form chocolate. Them engines burn oil badly as well. BMW say 1000 miles to a litre is fine which is mad. Most burn more than that. Nice looking car but very fragile very early into their lives. I am still watching the video so I might have spoken to soon. Good video gents

Rob if thats an E46 engine please please please either yourself or Chris take a look at the oil pump nut it can wind its way loose at high rpms and can destroy the engine. The best way is to drill a hole through the side of the nut and wire tie it to the pulley.

The mileage where it barely increased could be from someone having it as a second car and only using it occasionally in the summer.
I only drive about 400 miles a month normally, so as a second car, I could see me only driving 1000 miles or less a year in it if only used on a sunny day.
As for the fuel gauge, Auto Alex had the same issue with his 330i touring called Barney and he run out of fuel loads.. From him breaking down and others commenting, it seems to be a common issue that 1/4 of a tank is actually empty. 🙈🤣

Looking at the mileage discrepancy , it could or does look like an input error, which we know can happen. To me it should have read 90 and not 70, I have myself been accused of writing 70 and not 90. It just the way someones read it, like a mot station, entering the wrong number! But again another ready for the door. Great work as usual from Rob, and Chris for crunching the numbers! 😀

I only did about 450miles in my nice car last year, because I usually commute on a scooter and a year ago I bought a little panda to avoid racking up mileage and parking where people keep hitting it. Would probably create the same impression going forward as the mileage on your BMW but there's a reason for mine so could be similar for yours.

My work van does circa 3000mls PA....Car does about 7000mls PA...Your BMW does later milage being low correlate with a change of owner who used as a summer fun car...

Excellent price for that car, possibly the best looking 3series,
The flywheel wouldn't bother me, probably be fine for 000's of miles,👏

Where the roll back is could just be it had clocks changed I've seen a few of these with bad instrument clusters

So Rob, regarding the milage there is a way you can tell if it’s been messed with if your diagnostics gear can read milage from multiple modules in the car.
I think on this era of BMW the milage is stored in the light control module, the ECU and the instrument cluster.
If it’s been clocked properly they would have to have been all adjusted to the same milage otherwise it throws on the milage tamper light in the instrument cluster (little dot next to the milage from memory)
But looking at the video it would appear that either all the modules have been coded to match, or that the EEPROM of the cluster has been altered to turn that dot off!
If your gear can’t do it then find someone with a copy of INPA as that will be able to.

@@sruk yes Rob, absolutely agree with you that it has! Just a way to check it out and you may even find the original milage on one of the other modules :)

Does it really matter on a car like that?
It’s never going to be a show queen, it’s a really nice daily though.
Or is that not the case?

    • @WillThePlank

@@stivowen5710more out of curiosity for most people, at this price point and age I certainly wouldn’t care in the slightest and it makes a fun story.
If it was an M car or an Alpina then people probably would, however on an old convertible not so much.
Besides, this is the era of BMW where they went on FOREVER! My brothers 325i had 232k on the clock before he got rid of it and the engine and gearbox were still spot on.

They have really good engines but seem to have coolant issues with rads, hoses etc and really common for the expansion tanks and header tanks cracking.

  • @grahamepigney8565
    @grahamepigney8565 13 днів тому +1

All BMWs should run at the half way mark on the temperature gauge.
Plastic coolant parts, including the header tank, are well known for cracking and leaking. Over 20 years plastic starts to split and leak, sort of inevitable.
Anybody who knows BMWs will know this. Expensive cars to maintain if you take short cuts and don't what you are doing.
Plenty of blog/forum articles that will stop you wasting £s and hours.
