This gave me welders anxiety, you destroyed that grinder since you used a super thick zip disk, and its an ABRASIVE wheel, putting lubricant does not help the grinder, and abrasive wheels are not meant to cut aluminum, it gums up the grit on the wheel. If you used a portable bandsaw and some cutting fluid it would have taken no time at all or even a reciprocating saw. And when using an abrasive chop saw the breaker tripped because you were applying too much pressure to the material, let the saw do the work instead of forcing down on it.
I noted that watching it! Use a damned cutting disk and it would have been done in minutes, not hours, and with only one grinder that would still be going.
I'm a welder too and I thought they would know to use a cut off disc. They have cut a lot of things in half and must have learned something along the way.

I love watching these, but I do have a bit of a request: I've watched you tear-down a few different interesting items, but the approach seems to be in the vein of "Take a hammer to it". While I admit to a good laugh along with the co-workers watching you attempt to cut a stainless steel cup in half with a hatchet in a nice kitchen and virtually no protective gear (in another video), I would also be very interested in actually taking a good look at the mechanism's involved. The Torch, for example, is a one of a kind item. If you ARE going to tear it down, perhaps there are better less destructive ways, or perhaps you could get the camera in for a closer, less shaky look at some of the inner workings. By the time we got to see them, not only were they cut in half but we never actually got a good close work at the materials and mechanics of the thing. I would love to see more of that (as would most people who watch these kinds of tear-downs. Anyways, kudos on managing to get the torch, I don't know how you managed that. Keep up the vids, and ignore the hate: you've got a cute kid. It just seems you've managed to attract some of the scum from the bottom of the pool in the comments.

Even though what you said is true, he should be teaching his son to be safe around tools. He destroyed that angle grinder and kept tripping the breaker on the chop saw because he had no idea what he was doing. It might be fun but he's teaching his son how to kill himself they way he does it. I'm not super stuck up about safety when I work in my shop alone, but I sure as hell make sure my daughter learns the safe way to do the job.
Idiotology101 I agree Sir. Teaching a child the correct way to do anything is of utmost importance. Maybe his tools aren't the correct tools to use to do a task, but again, from what I've seen he keeps his son away for the most part and does look out for his well being. There's times I've wondered myself about his choice e of tools, but maybe he doesn't have what would be considered "the proper tool", and he's working with what he has. Maybe there is a video of him or his son getting hurt from improper tool useage. I haven't seen one yet but I'm not saying there's not one out there either. The angle grinder that everyone is saying he distroyed could just need the gears re-packed. I've myself have used the wrong tool for the wrong job. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Back when I worked in a shipyard, you get to know what's happening to your tools. I've had grinders that were smoking way, way more than the one on the video. Sometimes it was the gears, other times it was the electrical contacts. Either way I'd let it cool off, took it apart, cleaned it up, made sure that none of the parts were worn beyond tolerances, repacked it with grease, or installed new contacts, put it back together and it worked like brand new. I'm not saying that happens in every occasion, but sometimes it does. I don't know. I just thought that a lot of the comments were just a little hard, that's all. I know about "accidents" and how quick they can happen. I didn't see where he had his son holding the project while he was grinding on it shooting sparks. His son was 15 to 20 feet away, in the opposite direction of the work, sitting on a recliner playing a game. Yes!, things could have still happened. But then again people have slipped getting out of bed and broke their necks. Which act is more dangerous?
We were going to do a gold medal but felt that is too hard to earn. They make 12,000 of these torches and anyone that has connections can run in the race. It really isn't that disrespectful to cut open. Plus, we just showed the beauty of the torch to millions of people who would otherwise never know or care to look at it. Thanks for watching!

It might be just me because l'm Greek, but I think that destroying an Olympic Torch is really unethical. I know that they mead a bunch these but doing such a thing is just wrong.

A lot of negative comments below. Seems like some are forgetting that this isn't about the quickest or best way to do something. Its about a Dad and son having a little fun and sharing time together doing goofy stuff and maybe learning a little along the way.
Even though what you said is true, he should be teaching his son to be safe around tools. He destroyed that angle grinder and kept tripping the breaker on the chop saw because he had no idea what he was doing. It might be fun but he's teaching his son how to kill himself they way he does it. I'm not super stuck up about safety when I work in my shop alone, but I sure as hell make sure my daughter learns the safe way to do the job.
Idiotology101 I agree Sir. Teaching a child the correct way to do anything is of utmost importance. Maybe his tools aren't the correct tools to use to do a task, but again, from what I've seen he keeps his son away for the most part and does look out for his well being.
There's times I've wondered myself about his choice e of tools, but maybe he doesn't have what would be considered "the proper tool", and he's working with what he has.
Maybe there is a video of him or his son getting hurt from improper tool useage. I haven't seen one yet but I'm not saying there's not one out there either.
The angle grinder that everyone is saying he distroyed could just need the gears re-packed. I've myself have used the wrong tool for the wrong job. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Back when I worked in a shipyard, you get to know what's happening to your tools. I've had grinders that were smoking way, way more than the one on the video. Sometimes it was the gears, other times it was the electrical contacts. Either way I'd let it cool off, took it apart, cleaned it up, made sure that none of the parts were worn beyond tolerances, repacked it with grease, or installed new contacts, put it back together and it worked like brand new. I'm not saying that happens in every occasion, but sometimes it does.

I know about "accidents" and how quick they can happen. I didn't see where he had his son holding the project while he was grinding on it shooting sparks. His son was 15 to 20 feet away, in the opposite direction of the work, sitting on a recliner playing a game. Yes!, things could have still happened. But then again people have slipped getting out of bed and broke their necks. Which act is more dangerous?

We were going to do a gold medal but felt that is too hard to earn. They make 12,000 of these torches and anyone that has connections can run in the race. It really isn't that disrespectful to cut open. Plus, we just showed the beauty of the torch to millions of people who would otherwise never know or care to look at it. Thanks for watching!
