You have made some incredible videos during your career Johnny but I have to say this was one of your best. Great editing, sound design, filming, story telling, etc. You hit it out of the park with this one. Especially bringing attention to the other projects besides The Line but also how it's impacting the people and tribes from that area. Fascinating.
I've heard someone say something really accurate, it goes something like "It looks like Johnny Harris knows what he's talking about, until he talks about something you know about." When you watch his videos be aware that it's a company production, Johnny is not some independent journalist anymore and his videos are quite filled with mistakes and missinformation via lack of context.
My favorite part of this video is not the progress of the Line, but the look into the culture of the nomadic people who live there. Their lives are so fascinating.
Shame he didn;t mention the way the Line has been scaled right back from the MEGA project that was originally announced in 2021... Shame he also didn't really spend any time talking about the nomadic peoples being displaced by this project... Shame he didn't actually say anything at all of substance about this project... Almost as if it's an ad or paid PR puff-piece...
@@bluelightalarm did you watch the whole video? He explicitly mentions the forcible displacement and even one Bedouin's death at the hands of the Saudi regime. Yes he could have dug deeper but the Bedouin people whom he interviewed were clearly feeling unsafe to share details that could endanger their lives.

@@JohnCena-ex6zt the documentary of course, I missed the part where he mentioned the human rights abuses, the fact that the project is so stupid and a money pit that they had to shorten it from 170 km to 2,4 km, the natives that are refusing to leave their homes so they get sent to prison or the fact that saudi arabia executes journalists and is against the free press, im not gonna say that johnny was paid to do this video, because he couldn't have even made it in the first place, saudi arabia doesn't let journalists do documentaries on their own soil without their approval and there was a saudi official always present with harris to make sure he records 'the right side of the project' while I know that harris has lied in many of his videos and tried to rewrite history, this is just crosses a moral line
@dimitri6171 Honestly, you made me laugh. It seems that you are influenced by what the media says, and it seems that you are a fan of conspiracy theories. Everything you mentioned is completely untrue. I hope that you visit the country and see for yourself. None of what you mentioned exists, especially killing people. This is unbelievable because the highest percentage in the world of citizens’ trust in the government is in Saudi Arabia, at 89% of the people.
The whole time I was thinking the editing is insane, and then at the end I see the credits and realized y'all got the goat on this project. 10/10 great job to all those involved. Sound design was a masterpiece.
I visited Saudi Arabia for the first time a year ago and had to be talked into it. I went to Riyahd and AlUla and have now gone back two more times in the past year. The people and country were not at all what I expected. My understanding of the country had come from news reports and movies. The reality is a beautiful landscape and friendly, welcoming people who I've come to be friends with. I recommend anyone really wanting to understand the Middle East visit Saudi Arabia and in particular visit AlUla, which is as breathtaking as this video.
I agree with this assessment. Your quality of content, organization and delivery kept me (and I suspect many others) all the way through the video! Well done Johnny and the other creatives who produced this!
"Johny Sir this NEOM video is a masterpiece! Stunning visuals, cinematic shots, perfect sound design, and flawless color grading-everything is top-notch. Your hard work and creativity truly shine. Absolutely hooked from start to finish. Hats off! 👏🎥✨
How are women doing in the desert? Why did we not see a single one? Why is the elder a man? Disappointing that even somebody as Johnny Harris doesn't adress the excruciating reality, even blatantly whitewashing extreme sexism.
I don't really get the point of this video. It mostly felt like some sort of Saudi PR pitch with going out and meeting the locals and showing off construction however it wasn't quite sanitized enough to be a government-approved message. The resulting video feels really pointless because he doesn't have official government access. Hence, he shows us basically none of the actual construction (like he talks to a worker saying one project is 90% complete then doesn't show us that project). He also doesn't critically engage in the question he asks in the video, his answer could have come from one of NEOM's pitch websites. Also, he shows the tribesmen and their way of life and how important it is to their culture but doesn't really discuss how these projects might affect their way of life or the friction between their old-school way of living and the modernization the government is pushing. It's just taken on its face that the government will compensate them and that's that, never mind the things lost that can't be monetarily compensated for. It's like where were the people in the towns forced to go Johnny, how much money were they compensated for and what about their jobs and lives?
13+ years ago I travelled to Jordan with a dear friend. It was an amazing trip. On one particular morning while at a hotel in Petra, I woke up early to walk around the verandah. There was a mist that had come up at the break of dawn and while I stood there looking out at the desert, for a brief moment in time, I felt like I stepped back into an ancient path - the atmosphere, the air, the desert - it itched itself into my mind and I have never forgotten it. There's something beautiful, old, ancient and powerful about that region that is simply too profound to explain in words. Watching this, reminded me of that.
I wish the Saudi government would just build a Walkable Arabesque mega-city with modern amenities and accessible infrastructure instead of a freaking line smh.....
none of this seemed like an ad in the slightest. fake internet sceptics like should you should think harder. this was an exploration into the WHY not an 'expose.'

The marginalization of the bedouins in the area of the neom project is not a secret and created a buzz a while ago. that was a beautiful trip but i learned very very little. Why is the city straight? Who is paying to build all of these projects? Who has said they will move there? What's the point of building a bunch of cities in the desert? ...diversification from oil, you say, sure but how? cities don't make money by themselves-so is it tax revenue? do people pay to live there? This felt like a wonderful PR promo film for Saudi Arabia. Was it paid by Saudi?
i watch the other video before this from Neo, it covers more than this, this video is basically just vlogging. Yes, the city paid from oil money The city will attrack investors not only to build the city itself but also expand the business there (if the city is complete) and the gov will tax them and also attract more tourism

First title: "Why Saudi Arabia is Building a $1 Trillion City in the Desert" Thumbnail: Basically Johnny's face with dynamic shot with desert background. Let's see how it'll be optimised :D
A reminder that creators now have an A/B testing feature that allows us to upload multiple thumbnails to see which one appeals most to the audience. This system accounts for total watch time, which means it optimizes for the thumbnail that not only gets people to click, but also that best represents the promise of the video and gets people to actually stay and watch. So the thumbnail will certainly change many times as this video that we worked on for six months tries to find its audience.
@@johnnyharrisThanks for the insight Johnny, could this be an interesting video topic sometime? I.e "What can UA-cam thumbnails tell me about our psychology" and use it as a jumping off point for wider behaviour and engagement driven journalism.
@@johnnyharris I remember watching couple videos (starting with Veritasium, I suppose) about that process and I'm in no way bashing it. If you can tell - how long certain title/thumbnail needs to appear before useful data about it's performance can be gathered?
I find it interesting to see how easily these branded "independent" reporters switch to making propaganda content for financial reasons. (TYT network recently made such a switch as well.) This video is not his first one, i saw another very similar one on the American military industrial complex. Even more interesting is how susceptible the American public is to such propaganda, although it isn't that surprising anymore, just very depressing. Remember, Germans under the nazi's also thought things weren't that bad as one would interpret them to be.
@@stvdl9753 I don’t know the guy and I don’t watch his videos, but some of the things in this video are right and some are not, so I don’t see what you’re talking about. Even a lot of comments from saudis disagreeing with some of the things he addressed such what he called forced relocation or whatever.
It is a tradition for all people not only beduin but maybe they the the most welcoming. if we see someone is not from our area or city we invite them for coffee and tea and then dinner. This is what our parents told us to do. And we are happy to do that. We feel happy to have people in our homes. I hope one day you visit our country.
Imagine a city where they can restrict travel and and lock people down and control them no matter what direction they’re going. Sounds like a comforting place to live.
One thing i'm taking away from this video is the question that " do we really need another dubai?" it is obvious and clearly visible what saudi arabi is trying to do here. I'm seeing in future, after observing the contrast you've shown in this video, people will come to visit the natural scenery and aurora with the high tech cities. Of course if Saudi Arabia spare them in their habitat. It'll be interesting to see how this bet pays off!
I find comments like these particularly interesting and rooted in western exceptionalism and subconscious bigotry. The very fact that you are online and commenting on a video is testament to the fact that humans incline toward progress and technology. This is the same reason why rural American towns are shrinking as people move to urban areas to seek better opportunities. Why should desert Arabs be any different? What is Dubai? It’s a cosmopolitan city that flexes like any major metropolitan city in the world.
@@AmusementPerks No! Dubai wasn't wasting money, resources, and energy. Dubai was doing what's needed. Dubai went havoc when they started building artificial islands. They aren't able to sell them. Most of them are still empty. Saudi Arabia and neom has the same issue. There are no investors and nobody wants to live there, except he's offered a lot more. Nobody wants to live in a hot desert where they need to waste energy for cooling when you can live in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, and the US. It's a pipe dream. They will build some smaller version and be done with it. It happened to every other mega project too. There must be a necessity for it to be profitable.
Seeing that interaction amongst the Bedouin family helps remind me that we aren’t really that different despite being in different lifestyles and living conditions. We all care about and appreciate living peaceful and happy lives with our loved ones.
Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, "By Him in whose hand Muhammad’s soul is, anyone of this people, Jew or Christian, who hears of me and then dies without believing in my message, will be among those who go to hell.”
Absolutely beautiful footage. Insane production value. I wish this had been a much less longer video. I need a video on just the Bedouins. They were all so inviting it lifted my spirit.
The cinematic makes me want to become like johnny when i grow up. This is such a beautiful adventure you had and we are thankful for sharing this for this give us awareness to things that aren't usually given attention that much.
So animations fooled you? lol ... Neom can't look like in the animations. It would be too wasteful and unprofitable. Also, who came up with the line? The line is the most wasteful geometry. Just imagine the infrastructure. It will take forever to go from one end to the other. You will need so much more resources to build it and the maintenance will be terribly expensive. The square is the optimal geometry. That's why no city in the world is a line but square like. But I don't expect much from people on the internet. Most of you aren't scientists or have a scientific education. So you're fooled by animations like this. This is as stupid of an idea as building islands in front of an empty desert. And just as with the islands, neom will fail (yes, the islands failed, most of them are still empty and wait for an investor).
And did you know what? They needed to use another sand for the islands. They couldn't use the desert sand. That's so wasteful and impractical. Jesus! Just build in the desert and create a bay instead of islands.
@@devalapar7878I have to disagree with the square, the shape that is optimal depends on the environment and some nice blobby structures roughly resembling a circle are probably the most common if you look at reals cities and towns

well, yeah. would´ve been totally fine with me if the video said "the women are in another tent and dont want to be in the video" or something alike. But to not mention them at all... is weird.
The visitors did not come with any women. Nor did they come looking for a bride. So why would the Bedouin introduce them to their women or do away with their customary separation?
The juxtaposition of the traditional Bedouin lifestyle, the vast quiet desert, and the clear skies full of stars with the impossibly large industrial machine toiling away 24/7 in the background to build these trillion dollar mega projects in hopes of securing power in a post-oil world is so striking. I agreee
Hayden Smith edited it
I've heard someone say something really accurate, it goes something like "It looks like Johnny Harris knows what he's talking about, until he talks about something you know about."
When you watch his videos be aware that it's a company production, Johnny is not some independent journalist anymore and his videos are quite filled with mistakes and missinformation via lack of context.

Not quite free. And that's where UA-cam can be misleading. Every successful UA-camr gets money from ads.
It's like where were the people in the towns forced to go Johnny, how much money were they compensated for and what about their jobs and lives?
it is exactly a pr video.

First title: "Why Saudi Arabia is Building a $1 Trillion City in the Desert"
Thumbnail: Basically Johnny's face with dynamic shot with desert background.

When Dubai was being built people asked “do we really need another Singapore”
@MultiCool10 all the cliches are true. Change is the only constant and copies are everywhere!
Saudi has something Dubai doesn’t, a young highly educated population and entrepreneurs

City looks like the closest we'll get to a Deus Ex sequel.

But to not mention them at all... is weird.
The nature of customs and traditions in Saudi Arabia: Women and men live separately when meeting to give women their privacy.
The visitors did not come with any women. Nor did they come looking for a bride. So why would the Bedouin introduce them to their women or do away with their customary separation?

I have been residing in Saudi Arabia for 13 years. Saudi Arabia is a great country and worth a visit. The Saudi people are hospitable people. Saudi Arabia builds huge and beautiful projects. NEOM is currently being built 24 hours a day. Greetings to everyone. Your brother from Yemen 💚💚❤️❤️
So women live in the country? There were not in the film. Do they also live nomadically?
ماشاء الله

3:38 don’t want to be THAT guy, but that’s a front end loader.
Ah damn 😅
Jonny is so respectful and thoughtful when dining with the elderly and I love his way of noninvasiveness in talking to them about the construction. I admired that really!
Wow thanks for the thoughtful feedback and kindness
