I actually looked up a study on this, and apparently it isn't that the vibrations are similar to rain. Instead, the vibrations mimic those of moles, a major predator of worms. They know this because they tried simulating rain using a sprinkler and compared it with introducing a live mole. The sprinkler barely did anything, but the mole sent all the worms running for the surface. It works because the moles don't follow them up. They even played a recording of a mole digging, and it brought the worms up. The amplitude of the mole vibrations is also a close match to those of a worm grunter. The study is Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming-Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait.
@@mohammadumam897 They actually don't. If you repeat it enough times and track the direction the worms move, it is random relative to the stick. Read "Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming-Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait" and look at part D of figure 3.

The correct term is called, 'worm grunting'. It's a long established old Southern way of getting worms to come to the surface for harvesting. The worms come to the surface because of instinct. The ground vibration resembles a mole digging. The worms are trying to get away from the vibration. Moles eat worms.
Good old Mike Rowe episode on this worm grunting. Has my kids asking about starting a worm farm every few months still. It's been years since we watched that episode.
We have done this all of our lives in south Georgia. We call it grunting for worms. We did not have a fancy stick. We used an old tobacco stick and a brick. You would rub the brick back and forth across the top of the stick. I haven't done that in years. It is easier to just go buy them now. But, when I was a child, you had to get bait however you could and this was one way. As I got older, I had a vibrating sander that worked well on the stick. It saved a lot of elbow grease. Anyway, I enjoyed watching.

Man, I just want to say one thing: the place where you live is beautiful, man. I love this type of landscape, but I live in a country that doesn't have views like that
I have heard several things why. They are faster above ground and are too dry on the surface above ground. I also heared surface predators are likey not flying when it rains and they don',t want to drown in the ground.

The reason worms do this is because moles (their natural predators) make rhythmic sounds when digging. As an instinct the worms try and get away to avoid being eaten. A bit ironic that we are using its means of escape as a way of catching them. Also- ironic that the dune worm emerges when hearing rhythmic sounds to hunt, and actual worms emerge to escape from predators.
@@MrAsddasdasda in the video it may appear as if the worms are coming towards the sound- cuz they are emerging from the ground. @@InvertedBeans I'm pretty sure the vibration mimics the vibrations of rain and that is why the worms come to the surface. Worms can also be summoned with 2 metal spikes stuck into the ground and a 12V car battery, don't know why it works but it does.
You can also use a pitchfork or shovel. Just jam it in the ground and wiggle it, enough that you see the surface of the ground move. Used to do that when going fishing and would get a can-full of worms within a few minutes. Or if you don't mind ruining your lawn slightly, just turn over a shovelful of dirt and pick up any worms that crawl out.
Dude I wasn't paying attention to the worms. I was paying attention to the landscape and how your the only house out there with beautiful mountains in the back, incredible!
We used to catch nightcrawlers by going out at night with a potato fork, jamming it into the ground and shaking it back and forth for a few minutes. If nothing came up, move to another spot. People also used to use electric devices, but every once in a while someone would electrocute themselves, so those devices were removed from the market.
So...my guess is that the reason why the vibrations from the stick summons worms is that it simulates the vibrations produced when rain drops fall onto the soil. If this hypothesis is correct, then my following theory is that a worm summoning stick with unevenly cut nodules would work better than a stick with nodules cut at regular intervals because uneven nodules would better simulate the random pattern of raindrops.
I would suggest to strip bark off the stick. Bark is rather soft, so it dampens vibrations. Also I am pretty sure sticks of smaller diameters would work better (or at least the one without notches).
First video of yours I have watched. Gotta say this is some scrumptious content right here, very cool video! Ok I’m off to go summon the sandworm from dune.
Reading @battleon81's comment, I think a way to improve the design is to have a screw tip to dig it more into the dirt. I'm gonna try this to get more worms for my compost bin!

Haha you gotta try it!!
@@itsConnorCreates First I need to find a good stick and something that can carve wood 😭 😭 😭
Краще від розетки дріт у землю,але тільки плюс,відро черв'яків за пів години.
😆⚡️
Don't your arms hurt from that? 2:19
Yup but worth it!😅
We used to catch nightcrawlers by going out at night with a potato fork, jamming it into the ground and shaking it back and forth for a few minutes. If nothing came up, move to another spot. People also used to use electric devices, but every once in a while someone would electrocute themselves, so those devices were removed from the market.
Woah awesome! That sounds pretty hectic 😅⚡️
You defeated the whole purpose of using the worm charming stick. It’s supposed to mimic rain that way you can collect worms when it’s not raining.
Apparently it mimics the sound of a mole actually, which is a predator to the worms 🙌🏻
You got my favourite insect
Nice! 🪱 😄
Interesting! I like your theory!
@itsConnorCreates It's the only way that clothed ghosts make any sense. If ghosts were just disembodied spirits, they'd all be naked!
FUN FACT! In Australia the Australian magpies and ravens stomp their feet on the grassy soil where the worms are and they come up
I would suggest to strip bark off the stick. Bark is rather soft, so it dampens vibrations.
Also I am pretty sure sticks of smaller diameters would work better (or at least the one without notches).
Okay sweet thanks for the tip!
First video of yours I have watched. Gotta say this is some scrumptious content right here, very cool video! Ok I’m off to go summon the sandworm from dune.
Awesome thank you! Appreciate you watching and supporting 😄🙌🏻
Farming lvl999 worms for exp. This man gonna dominate the leaderboard.
😅💪🏻
Reading @battleon81's comment, I think a way to improve the design is to have a screw tip to dig it more into the dirt. I'm gonna try this to get more worms for my compost bin!
Good idea!🙌🏻
Wow. Bro lives in heaven, just look at his background.
Like wow
Hahahhaha
