Gerry suffered with alcoholism and depression throughout his life and this heartfelt track was written for his wife Carla Ventilla who he met in 1965. She spent a large part of their marriage helping Gerry through his issues but in the end it finally got too much for Carla and they divorced in 1990, twelve years after he wrote this for her. RIP Gerry, a fine musician.
When this song came out, I was 19! Had my whole life ahead of me! Now at 63, when I listen to this song( which I Love). I wonder to myself. " Where did the time go!" Great reaction guys as always!
Love this song! “Right down the line!” Isn’t his voice listenable! I could listen all day! I found myself liking all of his songs! I would say right away “Oh that’s Gerry Rafferty”and immediately began liking it and of course singing along!
He was the singer for a band called Stealers Wheel, a one hit wonder with a great song called "Stuck in the Middle with You." I think you've already reacted to it.
I just turned 60, and this was the music of my teens. I am so glad to see you both enjoying the old music! This is why old people like me say today's music just isn't the same!
Rafferty was one of those rare musicians who didn't want the fame - just wanted to make music. Such a tragic loss. A few more of his Songs you might enjoy, "To Each And Every One of You", "City to City", "Home and Dry", "Night Owl", "Family Tree", "Sleep Walking" and "Wise as a Serpent".
Scottish singer Gerry Rafferty wrote and released this song in 1978. It was the third release from his album City to City. This was the follow up to Baker Street. Beautiful song with great vocals and a wonderful melody. This was popular on the contemporary pop Billboard. It made it to Number 1 in the US and Number 5 on Canada. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Another amazing Gerry Rafferty song is "Get It Right Next Time." It is the grooviest vibe ever! I consider it my personal theme song. Whenever I feel like giving up I play it for myself!
My era, loved Gerry Rafferty!! His voice is amazing!! More 80s Level 42 Something about you. Jay will love the bass, bass player is one of the best Mark King
I agree with your Level 42 recommendation. I lived in London in 1986 and where ever you went, Level 42 was playing. I bought the Lessons In Love CD (the new format that was replacing vinyl records) at Virgin Records where I met a relative new-comer, Daniel Day Lewis, who was there promoting his National Theatre play, The Futurists. The Pretenders Chain Gang began playing and when he sang along, DDL really belted out, "For making us paaahhhhhrt!" I digress, but that memory is always tied to my Level 42 CD because DDL signed the case. I saw Level 42 at Wembley Stadium in December 1986. Great times and wonderful country to visit.
This is the song of summer, late 70's as a kid ridin' in the car with the windows down, at the beach, camping, at the water park, being on vacation. Just so mellow and breezy. Lawdy the memories.
This song came out in the late 70’s, I was pre-teen, and it was one of my favourite songs. It brings back so many fond memories. I’ve only been following you guys for a month now and I’ve been catching up on all your content (so many reactions) and you make my day better. Thank you both! 😊
OMG I watched your little girl dancing to Prince and it brought back such memories of my younger daughter when she was around that age. She would do this in her room or make the bed of my pickup truck her “stage”, until she saw us watching and she would do that embarrassed withdrawal just like your daughter. She’s in her 30s now and I’m past 70. Thank you for bringing a sentimental tear to an old man’s eye. Great choice on the Gerry Rafferty song. Was one of mine and my wife’s favorites when we were dating in 1978. Married the next year and still together 43 years later. You took me on two sentimental journeys today.
Wife here..Of coarse Loooove Baker Street..and Steeler's Wheel..!!..But.., this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE 💯 from Gerry Raff erty..!!..The instrumentation and voice as well as lyrics and even how he sings it.., Just Perfection in a Soft Rock Hit!!...Very Mellow and Chill!!...Thanks GuysFor Reacting to this..The Layering and Tricks.., True Perfection!!!..❤
I know you once reacted to Al Stewart's 'Year of the Cat'. I wonder if you could take a little time to react to another of Al Stewart's priceless gems from the 70s. The song is called 'Time Passages', and if you like saxophones and clarinets, that's a song for you.😊
The secret to this song is that is so delicate that upon first listen is seems unassuming and maybe just a "chill" song but truth is that it is an immensely emotional song that is just waiting to catch you when you're alone. Also, it's a patient song; it is waiting to sink into your emotions years later, allowing itself to resonate deeper into your heart. Right Down The Line will just grow and grow its way into you.
I love this song. Over the years this song would usually be playing on the radio when I was either on my way to or leaving from my visiting my extended family. It's been also a constant when spent those some evenings working late at the office. The radio would be on a particular station and this was one of the songs that always played.
Another mellow & chill song by Gerry Rafferty is Get it Right Next Time. Has his mellow sound but different than Baker Street & Right Down the Line. I just love his vibe.
My favorite song by Rafferty is "Home and Dry" the entire City to City album is a Masterpiece in my opinion... Give Home and Dry a listen. Great pop song.
Please try Rickie Lee Jones - she's such a unique singer and songwriter that I know you both will like. Her first album hit in 1979 and had several hits on it, and the one that made her famous was "Chuck E's in Love." Check that one out, and then you'll be eager to hear the rest of her hits. Trust me! p.s., she had four Grammy nominations off that album, and won "Best New Artist."
This is another great song by Mr. Rafferty. A fantastic artist who died before his time, unfortunately. You guys should also look into his other big solo hit. "Get it Right Next Tme"
Great song. May I also recommend "Home and Dry", "Night Owl", and "Days Gone By" should you do Mr. Rafferty again? I also noticed you haven't yet reacted to the OTHER really famous "Gerry" in music history, that being Gerry Marsden of the British Invasion group Gerry and the Pacemakers. Their signature hit is "Ferry Cross the Mersey", though they had many other classic songs.
Yes to Gerry and the Pacemakers, another band from Liverpool besides the Beatles. Would Jay already know "You’ll Never Walk Alone"? It is a famous sports anthem.
He was a founding member of Stealers Wheel, whom you have listened to before.their biggest hit was "Stuck in the Middle with You" in 1973. His solo hits in the late 1970s included "Baker Street", "Right Down the Line"
Unmistakable voice of Gerry Rafferty. Such a smooth, velvet voice. Gerry's lyrics were his own life experiences set to music and are so well put together. This talented man has a huge number of songs that are truly wonderful. Although Baker Street is a classic and threw Gerry into the limelight (which we wasn't fond of.!) he is so much more than just Baker Street - East to Talk, Don't Speak of my Heart, Night Owl. Welcome to Hollywood, The Royal Mile, Winters Come, Whatevers Written in your Heart, Don't Give Up On Me & Shipyard Town to name but a few......try them, you won't regret it. RIP Gerry.
It was really nice to grow up at a time when meaningful pop/soft rock songs like this were all over the radio, as well as hard rockers, metal, prog, r&b, soul, even disco, you name it!
What I have always liked about Gerry was his voice was so smooth and soothing. You just get lost in the song. They just don't make music like this anymore and I was a teenager that grew up in the 80's and saw and heard some of the best music ever. If you want to have a song that tugs at your heart, give a listen to Red Sovine. Old style country with great story telling.
If Amber is looking for a band that features the Sax alot, I'd recommend "John Cafferty, and the Beaver Brown band". Songs like; "Tender Years" "Some like it hot" "Garden of Eden" "NYC song" "Pride of Passion" and "Mariya". All bangers! *They were also the band who's music was 100% the soundtrack to the movie "Eddie and the Cruisers". (Pt 1 and 2) You and Jay will absolutely love them. 😃
Glad you got back to Gerry Rafferty. I suggested this song a while ago. I think it was around Valentine's Day. A beautiful song that appears to be simple but is very ‘refined’ with an important meaning. It seems he wanted to honor his wife with this song. "Get it Right Next Time" for your next GR?
Found your channel via suggested algorithm. Love seeing the younger folks experiencing 'new' music. I've been doing a similar thing at work; listening to new stuff from my younger coworkers. Keep it up!
OMG, this song is so better and beyond Baker Street. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. If I listen to this song too much/too deeply, it'll actually make me tear up. I love the way you both grooved to the song so differently. I believe he struggled with alcoholism, he wrote this song for his ex-wife, alcoholism wrecked his life. RIP Gerry.
Love this one from Gerry. I think you guys are due for another Little River Band song. Amber if you like sweet songs with that 70s sound your gonna love " Reminiscing ".
Amber & Jay, The *"Steelers Wheel - Stuck In The Middle With You"* reaction you did a year ago is actually Gerry Rafferty singing, even though he's not pictured as the singer in the music video that you watched. (The video was made after Gerry left the band but it's him singing)
I just got home from a drive from Orlando to Denver and back, helping my son move. I drove alone the whole time and had to take back roads most of the way. In some areas, I'd lose data and sometimes even FM radio. Fortunately,my van is old and still has a CD player. I had 6 CDs with me and one was Gerry Rafferty -City to City . It was the perfect, soothing CD to have and sing along with for the most nerve -wracking parts of that drive!
Love this! I was a Senior in high school when this came out. We really had some amazing artists in the 70’s. I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas!
Gerry Rafferty wanted to express how he loved this woman, but didn't know how but to write and sing this song. Jim Croce did much the same thing in the song, "I'll have to say I love you in a song." It's a lovely song that would make a great reaction for you!
this song played every day i was in driving school in high school. the song just had this rhythm to it that was perfect for driving down country roads. loved it.
I remember when this album came out city to city. It was so explosive to listen to a time when disco was ruling the airwaves. And all These years later, I still love to listen to the album
In 1972, Gerry Rafferty was briefly in the British Rock band, Stealer's Wheel. He was in the group long enough to record the band's only hit song, "Stuck In The Middle With You". There is a promotional film clip by Stealer's Wheel performing the song, but it was made after Rafferty left the group. Perhaps the both of you might want to react to the recording, which was released by Atco Records (a sister label of Atlantic Records).
we women should strive to live up to this high praise and adoration 🙏
Gerry suffered with alcoholism and depression throughout his life and this heartfelt track was written for his wife Carla Ventilla who he met in 1965. She spent a large part of their marriage helping Gerry through his issues but in the end it finally got too much for Carla and they divorced in 1990, twelve years after he wrote this for her. 😔 👊
Spot on. He's a much overlooked musician. Plagued by the booze. His album City to City is a masterpiece
Never would have guessed that 😮
This song was from the 70's
This was my favorite song back then
He was a genius RIP gerry
When this song came out, I was 19! Had my whole life ahead of me! Now at 63, when I listen to this song( which I Love). I wonder to myself. " Where did the time go!" Great reaction guys as always!

Also, without question one of the greatest love songs ever written.
Love this song! “Right down the line!” Isn’t his voice listenable! I could listen all day! I found myself liking all of his songs! I would say
right away “Oh that’s Gerry Rafferty”and immediately began liking it and of course singing along!
Fully agree.
Agreed.
It's too bad alcohol had such a grip on him.
Lush. The vocals are lush.
He was the singer for a band called Stealers Wheel, a one hit wonder with a great song called "Stuck in the Middle with You." I think you've already reacted to it.
Nice to know that I'm not alone in remembering that. Keep rockin friend.
good memory- it was on Sep 20, 2021.
I definitely remember that song
I was about to say the same thing, but I saw you did it for me. 😁
I didn't realize he was part of Stealers Wheel, but you're right, and it's obvious now that I know.
30 years together and my wife still breaks down when I sing her this song!😉✌️🙏❤️
Aww how sweet!! ❣️☺️🙏
You might want to stop singing lol sorry couldnt resist .
In the 70s there where 1000s of songs like this good song
I just turned 60, and this was the music of my teens. I am so glad to see you both enjoying the old music! This is why old people like me say today's music just isn't the same!

Oh definitely! My all time favourite is probably "Night Owl".
For great sax, also "Island" and "Take the money and run"
Scottish singer Gerry Rafferty wrote and released this song in 1978. It was the third release from his album City to City.

My fav Rafferty song! The bass player in the studio...
This has been me and my wife's song for over 30 years. I sung this to her on our 25th Anniversary. The most perfect love song:)

Perhaps the both of you might want to react to the recording, which was released by Atco Records (a sister label of Atlantic Records).
