Yes, because it's not a falling in love song. It's matured and has stood the test of time. It's an expression of love that comes from a deep appreciation of the partner for who they are and all that they have given, the loyalty, perseverance, devotion. It sort of makes me sit up and take stock.
Songs like this can save your life, wake you up, and give you the courage to express what you're feeling without feeling shame or vulnerability. Thank you Gerry RIP
A beautiful love song from a husband to his wife. Rafferty's life was one of the most tragic in rock music. The extensive Wikipedia article is almost unbearably sad to read. A generally depressed person who hated celebrity, he turned to drink for solace and eventually died of it (2011). And yet, he gave the world this beautiful thing.
@@drew2ist Indeed. In fact, artistic temperament itself often seems accompanied by at least some sadness. And as we know, some of those folks self-medicate.
Wow. . . I haven't heard this in 100 years - I forgot how absolutely beautiful and touching it is. I hope you realize that in your discovery of these gems, you're reminding so many of us of these beautiful songs that we grew up with and haven't heard in so long. Thank you!! xox
I hear ya!...I was young and didn't appreciate this when I first heard it, but now that Brad and Lex have "reintroduced" me to it, I realize its subtle beauty.
This song fit neatly into the elevator music genre when it was current. For me, those were songs I heard on the am soft rock that our school bus driver listened to. I never appreciated because of that association. Now in middle age, and knowing the struggles Rafferty went through, I totally appreciate the song and the composition. He was a great songwriter and maker of melodies.
I'd pay a million bucks - just to feel the way Lex feels during this song. Young and in love - starting a family - doing your best to get by - looking to her northern star for long term guidance.
You can tell that this song was written with a feeling of contrition to his wife. He was becoming an alcoholic by the time he wrote this for her, and it got bad enough a decade later that she finally divorced him.
Baker Street was so huge when it came out that this song (also from his 1978 City To City album) is sometimes forgotten and doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Its a masterpiece IMO.
I suffer from PPD. I play this song everytime we have a disagreement. I can be unbearable sometimes but her love and support she has for me never stops. I don't do well with words but this song tells her how much her and my kids mean to me. When you meet the one that you're meant to be with. You become like one with them. You no longer feel alone. No matter how hard the day feels, you look at them and you realise how lucky you are. You guys are awesome!
I was born in 1970. This song reminds me of riding in the back seat of the car going somewhere with my parents. They got an "FM converter adapter" and we were able to listen to music clearer than ever compared to AM. There were only a few FM stations at the time. Great memories.
good tune and minor hit when it came out. sadly night owl got poorly promoted. it a great follow up to city to city. his 2 80's album Snakes & ladders and Sleepwalking were pretty good not his best work. there are some good songs off those albums.
Gerry Rafferty, a wonderful songwriter and performer. Prior to his solo success he was a member of the Humblebums with Billy Connelly. Yes THAT Billy Connelly.
There’s Stealers Wheel, too. (I did a yt search and Stealers Wheel worked. I think Steelers Wheel might be it. I think a yt search for it would also work.)
What a perfect heartfelt reaction to this beautiful song. I hadn't listened to this in Forever and I'm sitting there loving the chord changes especially in that bridge. And his vocal delivery is not dramatic but he does a lot of things that are fairly difficult but he just kind of compacts them into these easy looking things and it sounds great. Man your reaction was just absolutely precious you guys.
You can definitely hear the "Stuck in the middle with you" vocals he carried when he sang for Steelers Wheel in this tune. Especially the WeeeeOhhh at the end.
Alright y’all, you have now reacted to perfection. This is my “go to” song like when I get a song stuck in my head that I don’t care for, I instantly put this one in my head instead to wipe away any crap, and it makes me happy again. I can always depend on this one! Best lyrics ever!
We all need to spread more love and kindness to each other every day. Life is short and many people hurt and it is good if we can ease each other's pain along the way. RIP Gerry and thank you for the awesome music.
I just found this song again taking my daughter on college tours o the radio. Hadn't heard it since the 80's. I always thought it was a Jackson Brown song for some reason. Amazing song.
This is the song that I think of when I think of my wife. It's soooo sweet to hear Lex feel the same way about Brad. And the smile on Brad's face when she said she had no doubts; perfect!
This song reminds me of Atlantic City when my sister managed the Galaxy Motel back in the late 70's What crazy but awesome times we had! Thanks to the one who suggested this amazing song. 😊
I must say that I truly enjoy your video reactions and watch most if not all of them. You both have such kind and gentle spirits it is always a bright spot in my day to check out your latest offering. Keep it up. We need all the peace we can get.
The wonderful Gerry Rafferty. A musical genius with a beautiful voice. You should try Shipyard Town. Easy to Talk, Welcome to Hollywood, Dont Speak of my Heart, The Royal Mile and so much more. You wont regret listening & enjoying his meaningful, and sometimes personal, music. Scotlands best ever. RIP Gerry.
Excellent reaction! One of my favorite love songs. Probably because the lyrics seem genuine, coming from a deep place of sincere love and admiration. No cheesy, catchy lyrics. Plus, the musicality and delivery is beautiful!
He could only be forgotten in an era like that when the quality of music was phenomenal. And then when you hear Gerry you're like, oh yeah, man this is so great!
Gerry was also the lead singer of the band “Stealer’s Wheel.” They did the song “Stuck in the middle with you,” which I think y’all reacted to. I need to go back and watch that one again now. Lol 😊
My Wife and I are 31, we were watching a TV show and this song came on. We had never heard this song before. We immediately shazamed the song, paused the show, put this song on the surround sound and danced to it.
Such a perfect Brad and Lex reaction at the start. Brad contemplates the weight of the song - so serious, whereas Lex feels the music - the love, the joy.
I have heard this great song a million times & never get sick of it. I actually had tears run down my face during this; loving Lex getting a bit emotional. Love u guys & pulling for you to be together always; Right Down the Line💪❤️
I was married to my best friend for 33 years, until he died suddenly on March 15 this year. He had been a professional musician for most of his teen years, right into college, where we met in 1987. Every couple of months, he would sit next to me, pull up this song on UA-cam, and play it for me. He always said that this song is exactly how he loved me. It’s pretty special for me to hear. 🙏
This to me is top 5 greatest love songs ever written. Its so personal to Gerry and genuine. He was a mess and his wife never left. That kind of commitment doesnt exist anymore...
This is a great sing along especially riding down the road. Marty Balin of Jefferson Starship wrote one of the best ballads ever, "Miracles". The long version is about 6-7 minutes.
Gerry Rafferty is a fantastic musician and writer. His music is so well produced,it’s very much from his heart about life I think. I can always listen to his music and it’s always brilliant 👏👏👏👏
Good choice. If you havmt yet check out Baker street by him. Saw your bto reactions and recommend second hand from the not fragile album 1974. Lex you'll love the guitar solo. I guarantee it. Sincerely.
Really great comment from Lex about the lack of vulnerability in modern culture. Everyone is putting on the face they think others want to see and hear, rather than just putting themselves out there
This might be the most perfect love song ever written.
No fluff. No filler. Just an expression of appreciation and intimacy.
Agree and with such great musicality.
gotta be one of the most yawn-inducing songs ever

Feel the same. I felt like that with The Pretender they reacted to. So glad I heard that song.
Right? I bought the "City to City" album for _Baker Street_ , but this song and _The Ark_ felt immediately like home. So beautiful.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. Rafferty is so under rated.
That song holds up so well with the passing of time. I never get tired of hearing that song.
This is the song to dedicate to your woman. It's definitely Gerry's best track, i believe written for his actual wife.
I suspect this is not the song Brad would likely dedicate to HIS woman...
Steelers wheel...
You can tell that this song was written with a feeling of contrition to his wife. He was becoming an alcoholic by the time he wrote this for her, and it got bad enough a decade later that she finally divorced him.
You two are so much fun to watch, you play off each other perfectly. Thanks for another Gerry Rafferty reaction, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
