Great video about relays. FYI when you start comparing 110VAC to 12VDC something should be understood. When talking about power you are dealing with Watts (V*A=W), not just current or voltage alone. Your AC unit is pulling 12amps at 110VAC so it's using 1320Watts. Your 50 watt car fans are running at 12V, so they are using 600Watts. So your car fans are using half the "power" of your house AC unit. I realize you are mostly talking about amperage in this video but it's a little misleading to say amps are amps and leave it at that. Thanks for video.
But it's the current that determines the thickness of wire required and the voltage drop through that wire. If your car had a 1000V battery there'd be no need for relays on anything that draws less than 100W... halogen headlights would draw 50mA and could be supplied with the same wiring that currently is used to switch the relays.
i'm an electrical buffoon but i am trying to set up something in my car. if i understand how something works it makes more sense than a video of someone just assembling something. thank you!!
It's amazing how many videos I watched on how to hook up aftermarket lights that basically explain nothing about HOW IT WORKS. From those of us who want to know HOW instead of just slapping something together per instructions, thank you. This video was invaluable in hooking up my lights safely and cleanly, just wish I'd found it before I fried 30-feet of wire and wasted 50 bucks.
no you didnt include a ton of technical jargon and math but after watching 20 different vids on this topic this my favorite...everything finally clicked after watching your video. thank you, now i am going to properly wire or re wire a good portion of my 20 yo plow truck. awesome
Chris you did an absolute superb job in breaking down your tutorial in a very basic, understandable way for novices like me to understand. You even explained the terms you used like "load", not assuming your audience understand the electrical lingo. I was so grateful how you did not presume knowledge on your audience. I mean for those who understand electronics they would not even need these basic tutorials. It is people like myself who are trying to become educated in the area and it is only due to the extent you went that makes things so clear and understandable. I am so grateful that you broke things down in elementary terms, as that is exactly what I was looking for. Again, thanks so much for knowing your audience and those whom you were trying to reach. I am a student of your videos and I importune you to keep up the good work. Us novices out here need people like you
Charlester Williams I second that. Did you get a good laugh like myself at the “dumbass” part? Haha. It was unexpected and I guess that’s why it had me cracking up. GoodtimeS
Thank you . Been battling my high compression 327 SBC in my 66 k10 . Old wiring had a melt down confused the shit out of myself with relay in my brain malfunction. Your vids straightened out my minds iron for no loss contact good as gold. You the man on this subject explaining points , s & r on solenoid back to coil three resistor old school which is where my mind circuit went South .I am all over it now like cheap polyester for the finish actually totally understand exactly WTD PRICLESS.
"Relays for Dummies", now I know the explanation and the application, Good for you Chris, talking at a very basic level and bringing us along, Teacher!
thank you ive been watching videos on relays vs fuse blocks for two days. this is the first one ive found that explained it in a way that i totally understand what a relay is, why, and how you use it.
Awesome vid! Love the straight forward explanation here. I thought I understood relays since I installed a few in the past but I never really looked at it quite like you explained it here, Thank you!
Thanks sooo much for sharing THAT. I just got SCHOOLED. Will use a relay every time now. Always use fuses but this really opened my eyes about heat and voltage drop. Thanks man
Where was this video the other day UA-cam?!?!? I HATE how UA-cam hides the good videos when you are relentlessly searching for explanations. Then about 2 days later UA-cam like hey and there’s this video you may like..but it’s on purpose. If UA-cam let you see this video first then you wouldn’t need to spend half a Saturday on their website. Great vid thanks
Bro, I was thinking that relay was going to smoke with that 120v power source, but I figured it wouldn't or this video wouldn't be posted up. Definitely one of the best explanations and coolest demonstrations I've seen. Nice Job!
i can admit when im a Dumb ass..with all the info on relays out there...i couldnt get my relay to give me power out.So i wired it like i know how, like a dumb ass, and it worked.....ironically i was in taking a dump this morning when your video popped up... Well Chris, You not only explained this all so completely simple for my head to wrap around... I can now go wire my fan up correctly to my Big Motor Ghia AND... Get rid of my extension cords running to my work trailers...
Very informative tutorial for those of us in the trucking business... as some viewers may know.... drivers are constantly installing rocker switches to power the lights on our rigs its actually an obsession with a right of passage....feeling confident to take it a step farther and boost up my bunk heater or maybe install a good floor heater on aux power ,thx Chris been a subscriber for almost a year keep up the inspirational videos P.S I'm wondering if an automatic boxing glove that pops out of my front bumper would be carrying things too far 👊
Awesome job, planning a lighting wiring job on my side by side and needed to understand why/where the relay comes into play, want DRL to work when keyed/ignition in on, full LED off the switch. Makes perfect sense now...
4:41 Thanks a million. Finally got the reason to have Relay (Even though your sketchy didn't have ground drawn @ target, here "Fan") and immediately ordered a pack of it! Sub and thumbs upped.
Love your videos man these have really taught me a lot. I could pay a few hundred dollars and have it done or watch your videos and be able to say I’ve done all the work on my car. Thank you!
Your video is absolutely outstanding outstanding please keep putting them out I enjoy them they're full of information and we appreciate everything you're doing
I appreciate that you have specified the wire gauge (10 AWG) ... trying to do DIY ... no knowledge about electrical but I have background in computer network cabling ...
I RARELY LEAVE COMMENTS BUT DUDE I DEFINETLY WANT TO SAY YOU EXPLAINED IT GREAT. THANKS FOR BEING SO CLEAR HOW IT WORKS
Finally !!!
After being in the Automotive industry for many years, this is the most simple explanation ever..
Great job !!
Do I need to spend extra money on thicker wires, or extra money on a relay?
agreed. straight forward and easy to catch up! 👍🏻
This guy needs to lay off the meth.

Saved me some typing, my thoughts exactly lol. Agreed still a great video though👌🏽

I don’t normally leave comments, but I come back to this video time and time again for a refresher. Thanks for doing it. I really appreciate it.

I've watched several videos but this explains it better than any of them
Best video on the internet. Thank you so much for making this, I've even taken screen shots to quickly remember things you said.
i'm an electrical buffoon but i am trying to set up something in my car. if i understand how something works it makes more sense than a video of someone just assembling something. thank you!!
I’ve learned a heap watching your videos on the use and need for relays and the wiring up for your double cooling fan setup! Thanks a million.
Always loved running relays, relay boxes, fuses and fuse boxes for a new, clean install.
Great confirmation information in this video!
I never leave comments. Ever. Thanks for explaining this the way you did. It’s a great introduction to auto relays
It's amazing how many videos I watched on how to hook up aftermarket lights that basically explain nothing about HOW IT WORKS. From those of us who want to know HOW instead of just slapping something together per instructions, thank you.

This right here is the point of the internet. Thank you for this. I'm learning more about how cars work!
How something so simple could be so difficult to explain is astounding! Thanks so much!
It took a while, thanks to your video of a practical example, I finally figured how the relay works.
