"What's it was like to have the best voice in Rock'N Roll?"
    Elvis's reply:
"Why the hell are you asking me that? Go ask Roy Orbison!"

Agree with "In Dreams." I remember being a teenager the 1st time I heard him. My dad was listening to one of his songs. I laughed and said "What are you listening to!?" He said "Boy thats Roy! He is before his time." Me being a rocker, I said "You mean AFTER his time!". 20 years later I really listened to his music and I admit. The old man was right. The teenager (me) was talking out of his ass! Roy is a great singer.

Elvis once said about Roy Orbison "He has the voice of an angel. Nobody has the range from one end of the vocal spectrum, to the other that he has". High Praise from a guy who many consider the greatest singer ever. (Elvis). Orbison started out in the `1950s with guys like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Jackie Wilson etc. He is one of the truly great singers of all time. He endured a life filled with tragedy as well. Maybe that's why he sang about it with such conviction. In Heaven now, singing exclusively for the Lord.

encrypter46 you are so right. They were, like a lot of acts then so amazingly written and scored. I also like a lot of Glenn Miller stuff. The music is so fluently written. The use of certain instruments and beats are amazing. And like all the earlier stuff, unlike a large proportion of today’s singers, these people could “really sing” with or without musical accompaniment. Today’s artists so often need a lot of equipment to sound even half good. All those best singer awards need to go to the producers and mixers. ,

This is an old song. Yes, you definitely need to listen to more. This guy had a phenomena range and was revered by such classic acts from the Beatles all the way to Bruce Springsteen. He was huge during his time then kind of faded in the mid 60s. He began to make a slight comeback in the early 70s and by the late 70s people were covering his songs with much success. But he was really propelled when David Lynch used his 'In Dreams' in the movie 'Blue Velvet'. He made a huge comeback, had his own very excellent HBO special which showed the the years had not taken anything away from that phenomenal voice. Then ex-Beatle George Harrison put together the group The Traveling Wilburys and just had to have his old friend in the group. This proved to be quite successful as well....but then Roy died.
Bruce Springsteen was in awe of Roy and stated that if Roy got up to sing, everyone waiting in line to sing may as well go home. Roy was a difficult act to follow. His most well-known song is probably 'Pretty Woman'. But it is definitely not his best. I thank my dad for turning me on to Roy when I was young. He wasn't my king of music then but I had to admit he was damned impressive.

Roy Orbison! Now there's a score. Beyond classic. That voice! To quote Bruce Springsteen from "Thunder Road,"-- "Roy Orbison singing for the lonely, Hey, that's me, and I want you only..." Other classics from Roy Orbison include "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Crying," "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)," "In Dreams," "It's Over," "Running Scared," and "Blue Bayou" from the 1960's, and from the 1980's "She's a Mystery to Me," featuring Bono and Benmont Tench, and "You Got It" featuring Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. And then there was The Traveling Wilburys -- a supergroup comprising George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. And then there was the 1988 Cinemax television special "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" where he played all his greatest hits with special guests including Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, Jackson Browne, and Bonnie Raitt among others. Orbison passed away a year later. RIP!

Songs back then had to fit the time slots on those little juke boxes at the tables in the diners... Elvis Presley had great respect for Roy... I was listening to the Elvis station during Elvis week while driving, and they were talking about a recording session where they were floating around song ideas for the Album.. Someone suggested a Roy Orbison song( I Fogel which one), Elvis's Reaction was that he crossed his arms, kind of got a serious look, and said I only record songs I think I can improve on" . And that was the end of that...

I second "Crying" by Roy. Best voice in rock n roll. The Beatles opened for Roy in England in the earl 1960's.
