There was a reason they called Frank Sinatra "The Voice." He would be the pop music equivalent of the operatic vocal perfection of Luciano Pavarotti. And frankly, at this point his age is starting to show in his voice. What he has left is still far more than many vocalists have at their peak. And the slightly worn edge that's entered his voice particularly fits this song. As his technique slightly faded, his depth of understanding became stronger. If you listen to some of his earlier stuff, it will be somewhat more polished, but you won't find that knowledge that only comes with age that shines through in this performance.

We played it at my grandad's funeral, he was born in London in '51, but spent the last 20 or so years of his life living in southern Wales. He was an avid Frank fan, the only singer he liked more was James Taylor, so we had "My Way" playing as the pall bearers carried him in, and "You've Got a Friend" as we all left. It's a perfect send-off song, truly :)

Fun fact: "My way" was first a french song, music composed by Jacques Revaux in 1967. It was sung by a very famous french singer, Claude François (who died tragically in 1979 at 39, it was a national drama, kind of like when Elvis died in the US). The song was called back then "Comme d'habitude" (as usual) and told the sad and common story of a couple living together but no longer loving each other, going through the motions of life and pretend love. It's quite sad.
Then it was adapted in english and became "My way" in 1969, I believe.
Jacques Revaux must be the richest guy on the planet thanks to a single song!

    Thanks for another fun reaction!
This song was written for Frank by another great performer, Paul Anna, who had been a teen idol. (You should check him out too)
Frank had decided at around 55 or 60, that he wanted to retire. So this was his farewell song. It became such a huge hit, every singer male and female recorded it - more males of course!
After about 4 years away, Sinatra was lured back into performing and he released a great album called Ol’ Blues Eyes is Back and went on to another, hugely successful part of his enduring career.
He was a crooner ( which means singing lightly and warmly), but his phrasing was legendary, making his style excellent for jazz and swing as well as for ballads of all kinds - even Beatles’ songs.
Sinatra always did my favorite rendition of this song, but you can hear the strain in his voice for the big notes, although he does arrive at them pretty well. That was why he wanted to retire - while he was still at the top of his game, it was getting harder for him to hit the big notes and his audiences knew it, but nobody minded!
Later, coming back out of retirement , many of his songs had to be transposed down a note or two.
Again, although we were all aware, nobody minded because Sinatra always had style and he knew well how to handle his voice, as he grew older. He could charm you with it until the very end. Frank Sinatra truly was one of the greatest performing legends to ever grace the world.
You can check out his older hits like
    Come Fly With Me
    Fly Me To the Moon
    Nice n’ Easy
    Love and Marriage
Something Stupid - huge hit in the late 60’s
You will find a huge number of songs!

I grew up hearing Sinatra on the radio, so that voice just sends me back to those old days. He was my parents' generation, and his career continued unchecked for several decades, I guess. He acted in movies, did tv specials displaying that wonderful musical talent, even danced. He had a full career, a long life and a family he loved. After divorce from his children's mother, the magazines were well-stocked with pics of the many beautiful women he dated later on, also he married again at least once more. Frank Sinatra was a "dreamboat", a fine actor, fabulously talented singer, ladies' man, and truly did do it his way.

I’m Italian American, so have listened to Sinatra, since I was born. It’s such a joy to watch you discover his music and hear his fabulous voice for the first time! He was not just a popular sensation but an astonishing musician with phrasing nobody could match! I love his music from the fifties when his voice was perfect, anything he did by Cole Porter, later his work with Brazilian jazz, Antonio Carlos Jobim. He was just the best and so glad you enjoyed him!

Frank was awesome. He was a teen idol back in the the 40's. Later became an actor and was in some great movies. He won an Oscar for his role in "From Here To Eternity." I'm from NYC, but my kids grew up in New Jersey and as young adults lived in Hoboken and Jersey City - where Frank Sinatra grew up and lived in the early days of his first marriage. He is still a hometown hero. I remember listening to the Frank Sinatra on The Make Believe Ballroom with William B. Williams when I was a child. The sound of his voice triggers a lifetime of memories.

This is the anthem of Frank Sinatra. He was the greatest before Ekvis came out with Rock & Roll. He was a great singer and was in many movies. He was called the Chairman of the Board and the head of The Rat Pack (with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford & Joey Bishop). They entertained people in Las Vegas and in movies.

He had to wear a shirt & tie and was underdressed lol. He told me men were in tuxedos and women in long dresses and hip flasks! Frank came out on stage, let the crowd do its thing and he put up his hand. The crowd stopped and Frank let loose. He was one of our greatest singers that ever graced the Earth!

Being an individual and doing the things one loves regardless of the hardships one will face to obtain them. Is what being and independent and free thinking human being is all about. And when the time comes to face the reaper after the life one chose to live, successful or otherwise...In the end It was done his way. Brilliant!

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Frank Sinatra! It was so fun watching you discover him! It’s difficult to pick a favorite song to recommend... he has so many different sounds! I probably love his work with County Basie best, and also with Nelson Riddle. “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” is one of this best songs for sure. Another I love that I don’t often see others mention is “Hello Young Lovers.” And by the way; Frank Sinatra was one hell of an actor as well! He did everything from musicals (with Gene Kelly!!) to westerns to comedies to dramas... He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for “From Here to Eternity,” and incredible film with Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr & Donna Reed. Must watch! He was also nominated for Best Actor for “The Man with the Golden Arm,” but he didn’t win. His performance as a heroin addict in that film is really famous. Eleanor Parker, who plays his wife, is one of my absolute favorite actresses. Check these out if you can!
PS. I almost forgot to recommend this 1945 short film of Frank talking to some neighborhood kids about prejudice and singing “The House I Live In.” He was really young here. It starts with him recording another song in the studio, and the whole thing is only about 10 minutes. (Unfortunately it does contain anti-Japanese sentiment, which was typical for American films during & immediately after WWII.) ua-cam.com/video/vhPwtnGviyg/v-deo.html
