Don McLean is about as Americana as you can get. This song is ICONIC. I've probably heard it several thousand times, but I never get tired of it. This was by far Don's biggest hit. It happened five years before I was born...February 3, 1959...the day the music died. The day Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash, the first major tragedy in the rock and roll world. And yes, you have to hear the studio version. A perfect production.

robert flack's recording of "killing me softly" is a song written about seeing don mcclain's gig at a small club, attended by the songwriting team of charles fox and norman gimbel. the fugees covered it brilliantly in the '90s. the lyrics say it all:
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him to listen for a while
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there
But he just came to singing, singing clear and strong
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

One of the most powerful and beautiful songs ever written, also the amount of layers and meanings behind this song are amazing. Specific events about the death of famous singers are alluded to but the change in culture is described throughout the song too

This song is really deep; he sings about the death of 3 singers and an end to 50is music; he considered real music -and he was right; But you really have to listen to “Vincent” also a master peace of Don McLean.

Not really, near the end of the song he covers the loss of Hendrix, Morrison and Joplin. It was not one was better than the other, when the music would not play the 2nd time, that was to honor them. All were great.

This is the best live version to watch. The reaction from the crowd is awesome. You could tell they were all in for every sing line.First came out when I was two or three and heard it over and over and over......great song, gets into your bones and once you've heard it you know pretty much all the lyrics pretty damn quick.

I first heard this song in 1973, when I was twelve years old. It took me a long time to learn all the lyrics, but I loved the process. The song has so many layers, so much to think about and discover. And this has to be one of the best live performances I've seen - like you said, just a guy and his guitar, but so much heart in it! (Check out his song "Vincent", about the painter Vincent Van Gogh. Gorgeous tune!)

There is a longer version ... it takes up one whole side of the LP Album (and, yes I have it on vinyl). Needless so say I was singing all the lyrics not just the chorus! This song is nearly 50 years old! I feel old, very old! Glad you liked it. I hadn't thought of it in a long time. Big songs from your youth can become seared in your memory ... or perhaps that's just me!

Used to be a running joke back in the day that the Radio D.J. had to go to the bathroom cause they playing American pie. Your reaction is perfect. Half way thru you STARTED to sing along. Every part of the scene back then was incorporated into this song. Great react. Wish I could give you more than a thumbs up on it. Now you gotta go react to him singing VINCENT. THANKS J

I'd recomment "That'll be the day" by Buddy Holly, there's also a very cool live performance of that song (i think it's just 1:20 something minutes long), he really was one of the fathers of rock'n'roll

The levee in the song was a long tome family bar on North Ave in New Rochelle, NY. It was across from Iona College and Don went to Iona Prep. DonMcLean lived there. It’s my hometown. He use to visit his mother and her friends in New Rochelle and sing this song for them. All the kids in the neighborhood would farther around outside the house and listen.

When don McLean sang "the day the music died" he was talking about the plane crash that killed buddy Holly , Richie valens and the big bopper (jiles perry Richardson). A coin toss between Richie and Waylon Jennings for the last seat on the plane was lost by Jennings.
Their tour bus had a broken heater so thats why they took the plane at the last minute.
Jennings often felt guilty about the coin flip.
Who knows how music would be changed now if it weren't for their deaths, their music was absolutely brilliant especially for their young ages. That is the day the music truly died......😢

This song was number one on Billboards chart for 4 straight weeks. Growing up this was our anthem where we tried to learn all the words to this masterpiece. Many good memories to this song when being a teenager was not always easy but was more enjoyable than now when going to school can be dangerous. Vincent by Don is a beautiful song to listen to.
