When you can get Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, kd lang etc to sing backup and harmony, backed by a world class band, it must be heartwarming. To have that caliber of talent there just to acknowledge the inspiration and joy you've provided them and the rest of the world for that matter over the years must be an honor that very few receive.
@JeffGes I think bwilson5401 is referring to the fact that the Beatles used to open for Roy... Once they got more popular, Roy agreed to share the top billing, and to let them close the show... I once heard a story where a European crowd wouldn't let Roy leave the stage after a performance, leaving the Beetles to sit and wait for their turn... After 4-5 encore songs, two of the Beetles, I believe it was John and Paul, took Roy by each arm and (Jokingly) said "Yankee, Go Home"... The crowd was solidly for Roy, but the Beetles did just fine when they got to the stage, regardless...
@@RichardDickson-to7zg and your regular touring band is people like Jeff Lynne and a beetle in several other people that just want to clamor to be near you you know you're like royalty when it comes to music. Think of it was even Elvis thought he had the voice of an Angel 👍❤️ and who am I to argue with the King 😆❤ 👑
Roy later joined with George Harrison (formerly a Beatle), the great Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne (creative genius of Electric Light Orchestra) and Tom Petty to make up the band called The Traveling Wilburys. Their song "Handle With Care" features Roy singing the lyrics "Im so tired of being lonely", which is a nice nod back to this classic!!
Elvis Presley mentioned that Roy Orbison had the best voice that he has ever heard! Checkout Roy singing Blue Bayou it’s amazing, great reaction thanks 🙏
Roy is someone who will always be in my heart. His songs occupy a warm place in my heart and each one brings back memories for me. He is a big part of the soundtrack of my life.
Sarah, you just witnessed and heard arguably the greatest voice in rock! This had to be one of the most amazing performances ever! The star power on that stage is eye opening! Love your reaction!!
6 Years ago, my dog and I travelled the country from the west coast. I decided to visit Sun Records in Memphis, largely because I had been a big Elvis fan. At the studio, I was overcome by records of Roy Orbison made at that small studio. I stood on the wood floor, marked by an "X" where he had stood while recording, while his songs were played over the crowd. Such a warm, heartfelt moment of greatness. If you love great music, make sure you visit. Much better than Graceland.
Little Remembered fact: The Beatles toured with Roy Orbison in 1963 in the UK. Although the Beatles were big in the UK they were not yet worldwide known. Roy was a BIGGER name at the time. The Roy Orbison/The Beatles Tour was a 1963 concert tour of the United Kingdom by Roy Orbison and the Beatles. Other acts on the tour included Gerry and the Pacemakers, who followed the Beatles across the pond to the USA in 1964. The Beatles were thrilled to death to tour with one of their idols. In fall 1964 Roy released one of his biggest songs, Oh Pretty Woman..it was different, had a Beatles kind of guitar riff ..if you listen to Beatles songs like Hold Me Tight and I Call Your Name, or I Saw her standing there [the bass part] you will hear a very similar riff to Oh Pretty Women's guitar riff. Another song was the Hippy Hippy Shake by the Swinging Blue Jeans, same style. Roy borrowed a Beatles style and made Oh Pretty woman a huge hit still remembered today, in the midst of Beatles dominance on the charts, not an easy thing to do...
Roy had a unique voice. He could sing 4 or 5 octaves - probably no one else is capable of. Watch the Travelling Wilburys. His contribution was integral. When they formed, they were a collective of the greatest musicians and they all agreed that if Roy didn’t join was it worth it.
Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Running Scared", "Crying", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne.
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Beach Boys all looked up to Roy and saw him as major competition. Touring with the Beatles in 1963 they wondered how they could follow him up as he received encore after encore.
Although I love this concert, his voice is even stronger, and more powerful & beautiful in his original songs from his younger days. Those, I can listen to for hours.
Sarah, for claiming to be speechless, I thought you said a lot. So much so, you had to experience it twice and even then I felt you had more to say but, your emotions, understandably, overpowered your control of speech, and left all on your sleeve. You had this old man joyfully weeping with you!! Thank you, Sarah for this and all your other honest reactions.
Roy was one of the greatest voices of all time. And the list of his friends on this evening were a who's who in rock music -- Jackson Browne, Bonnie Rait, K D Lang, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Jennifer Warnes to name a few. Thanks for the great reaction!
Many people consider Roy the greatest voice ever. Check out his Crying, Blue Bayou, Pretty Woman. And for real fun, check out The Traveling Wilbury's a little side project Roy did with some friends. Roy Orbison had some tragedies in his life -- he had 3 children, the 2 older boys died in a house fire in 1968 when his home in Tennessee burned down. His first wife, Claudette, died after a motorcycle accident in 1966 @ age of 25. You should try to watch that entire Black & White Night video -- it is truly fantastic -- the full title is "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" --- some of the artists on stage with him were Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, & musicians of Elvis fame were James Burton, Glen Hardin & Jerry Scheff.
They did the show in black and white on purpose - the countless celebrities in this show are masters in music invited to be part of the show. Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, J.D. Souther and Jennifer Warnes.

Not merely one of the great American singers but - despite his own relative humility - one of the great pop singers of the twentieth century. I am not kidding around.
"Crying" really displays Roy's vocal range. Also, he was one of The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and ELO's Jeff Lynne. He was a great artist who left us too soon.
Roy Orbison liked for 52 years (1936-1988) His voice was amazingly at the same clear tone for all his career. This concert, filmed near his death had many musical friends in his band, and singing backup - check out who was playing with Roy. One of the great vocalists!
I love your reactions! You might next consider "Shangra-la" from ELO (Electric Light Orchestra). Beyond hauntingly beautiful! You'll die of joy overload.

He's not called 'The Big O' for nothing, Sarah. Never been anything quite like him and probably never will be. Soaring, slow-build ballads against lush strings were his forte. This was his first hit in 1960, and his original recordings on the Monument label from then onward remain unsurpassed. I hope you check some of them out sometime. 'Black and White Night' is an all-star retrospective made not too long before he passed. Obviously still in fine voice here, but his peak years are highly recommended.

Because they were not born back then, or were very little, or their parents did not listen to or expose them to artists "back then" -- they grew up w-other musicians & other types of music & didn't have exposure to what someone like myself was there to see & hear & know about.
