Excellent! We have lived in Fairbanks for 30 years. 10 Pros: 1) Sugar snow and no salt...vehicles do not rust out. 2) Warm summers for excellent gardening 3) Quiet and private...easy to afford a modest home on 2-5 acres of forest with no neighbors next door 4) International airport minutes away 5) No sales tax, no state income tax 6) No traffic...no redlights from Fairbanks to Circle, Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, Fairbanks to Valdez, 7) Dry...total of 12 inches of precip annually, 8) Typically low humidity and no wind when it is cold 9) Fantastic big game hunting 10) Small mom and pop stores and the big box stores in town
4 Cons: 1) Smoke from wildfires can make summer outdoor activities hazardous to heath. 2) December short days (3 hours 42 minutes) 3) Mosquitoes from May thru mid September 4) High cost of living compared to much of the lower-48.

Thank you for the information, Missy! Someone recently told me that Fairbanks was a dead city and to me it seems very appealing! It's nice to see a comment that is fairly recent, as I do all things Alaska research because I'm going to be moving there within the next four to five years.

@@mischa9963 The cost of houses is not bad compared to some places in the lower-48. We have a 3-bedroom, 2 bath with a 2-story new 1600 sq. ft art studio on 2.5 acres of forested land on a ridgetop with an awesome view and it is assessed at $410k. In general houses are more expensive in Anchorage/MatSu Valley.

I lived in Fairbanks for 13 years… by far the worst place I’ve ever lived. Besides the constant life threatening weather, you have the super expensive cost of living and being held in a financial bubble where businesses raise their rates competitively ( what? You raised your gas price a dollar this week? I’ll raise mine too)
While people will be people anywhere you go Fairbanks people have a genuine fear of others taking what they have which makes them very competitive, cruel and selfish.
Bars take turns shutting each other down as there is only enough clientele for a couple of places to exist at a time. They close, change their name and reopen and put the bar across the street out of business.
The people are very proud that they don’t have many options and have an inferiority complex along the lines of “ books? We don’t need no books or fancy clothes or an education or..etc etc”.
I would say that 95% of the town lives below the poverty level even though they are making at least 25 an hour, it’s just that expensive.
Basically it’s like living on the moon. Cold, dark, isolated and filled with human drama.
The biggest upside? Women outnumber the men and for some reason they are all very attractive, and also very down to earth, although unless you look like a lumber jack, wear a baseball cap, hunt and fish they aren’t interested in you.
Don’t talk a lot, ignore them, be way more interested in hanging out with your guy friends in the woods and they will crawl over one another to get your attention.
That about sums up Fairbanks lol
