I fished out of Dutch Harbor in the 90's. It was a great experience. Everything else in life has been easy after that. I wish I could share all of my experiences but it would take too long. It looks like Dutch has changed a lot. The one thing I try to describe to people that ask me about commercial fishing is the feeling of being in a quasi last frontier. Little, to no police. Ingenuity. Being rugged. Loneliness. Always longing for someone or something you miss. Dreaming about your future. It changes people. We called it the Aleutian Stare...lol

Hello my name is Peter I grew up in Unalaska! This video made me miss home so much. Morris Cove and that general area is a great place to camp and fish. My people have for thousands of years there as you mentioned. Thank you again for sharing this wonderful video of my home town. 🙂
Definitely dangerous to be on a crab boat around the Bering Sea. A buddy of mine from college was just going to do that for a year to make some extra cash before transferring to another college and he was swept overboard. He was probably around 21 when he lost his life. Huge respect to those guys. Thanks for the video! It looks amazing up there!

I've worked in Dutch Harbor, and the weather must be seen to be believed. The rain falls in every direction but up. But when the sun peeps through, the light is magical and it becomes one of the most beautiful places on earth.

That was truly amazing, like a professional documentary. As harsh and isolated as Dutch Harbor is, you made it intriguing and appealing. Thank you for this amazing opportunity.🌷
Bro of mine used to talk about Dutch, he did the crab fishing thing for a few yrs to put self thru engineering college. Somehow a memorable scene. They were once holed up with a number of other fishing boats in a remote natural harbor to ride out a killer storm, 2 of the boats letting cabin fever get the best of them, were talking on the radio about leaving for open ocean, going home, while other captains tried to dissuade them, "We won't be coming to save you as we will die with you if we do." 2 boats left anyway, hours later radioing distress calls, they were getting severely iced up and ready to capsize. At some point you can't break ice off fast enough from superstructure and the boat is simply doomed to roll over. Not sure if any were rescued but many died. On average one boat per yr was lost out of Dutch a few decades ago, I assume it's better by now.
Just joined the second level of your Patreon. So happy with it! Guys, there’s so much value there. Especially the Director’s videos with behind the scenes thoughts about the location and your approach to filming. Highly recommend ❤
Great video Eva! If someone goes on a cruise ship, they get off the ship someplace and spend a few hours then back on the ship they go and don't get a feel of the people or culture of where they just visited. You did a great job explaining the past and the present and the personal experiences of the locals that live there. I think most people that watch this video will feel like they've already been there. Thanks again Eva.
In my opinion, one of your best videos ever. To me it sounds like a great vacation place. Working in a fishery or on a fishing boat; I can't see myself doing it. I enjoy rough water, rough weather, and remote places as getting away from constantly being connected to urbanization can become such a rat race. The power of nature seems to bring you back to the reality of what your real world is. I can see that you really enjoyed this.
Eva - I’ve followed your channel for around a year. What is this?!? This is world-class videography. You are incredible. Thank you for the work you do - it IS work…
Really nice video work! I spent seven years on a research ship with the federal government studying mainly migratory seabirds but pretty much everything else, too. The Aleutian people's culture, whales, sea lions, archaeological digs, the effect of foxes on the ecosystem of the islands, even some military research. Like the people interviewed said, the weather is king. It dictates what you do in almost every aspect of your life here. I was lucky enough to have visited over eighty five islands in the years there, all the way out to Attu at the end of the chain. Besides the daily work ( I was one of two deckhands on the ship in a crew of six) we hiked everywhere, took pictures and video, worked alongside biologists and even got in a day or two of water skiing each season! I often think of the Aleutians as a cross between Ireland and the moon. Oh and Eva, Anchorage isn't the capital of Alaska, Juneau is.
Eva, I enjoy your videos so very much. I used to watch the show 'Deadliest Catch'. It was amazing what they go through and keep coming back year after year. It's not something the average person can ever understand. Thank you bunches for the wonder you bring to the world!
I lived on an Aleutian island for almost a year and the comment about the snow going sideways is very true. Very high winds keep most of the snow off the island. Since the island chain is right on the edge of the earth's plates, you feel a lot of small earthquakes as well.
i never had the opportunity to visit Dutch Harbor but I was further out in the Aleutians in 1961-62 on Adak, Alaska. It was very remote. It was frequently referred to as the birthplace of the wind. Did a lot of hiking and fishing while there and have fond memories. Thank you for the excellent video of Dutch Harbor.
I love that Dutch Harbor seems like such a closed-off community, but you are welcomed in easily. I love how you entered yourself into the race, as well, they were so confused! Fantastic video, as always! 💙
Wow, I'm in awe of your tenacity & bravery. Your holistic attitude to life is not only impressive & inspirational but also insightful to different world 🌍. Nuff respect.
Another beautiful video Eva. About a year ago I turned my 15-year-old granddaughter on to your channel. She was immediately hooked and eagerly awaits each new episode. The really nice thing is , they've made for a lot of conversation between a teenager and her old Papa that I wouldn't have had otherwise , so thank you.
Hi I’m Seth and I’ve been watching since the Jarbidge episode. I can’t say enough how long it’s been that a UA-cam channel has me so mesmerized. The level of remoteness you take things to is so inspiring. I can’t imagine how it must to be out there on your own but nevertheless it is beautiful to watch. I also love your insights, the little moments of reflection and introspection. It’s why I love nature. Also, I absolutely NEED a truck like that 😍 Keep it up, stay safe, thanks for the great views.🍻
This was such a fascinating video! I can't travel much, but I do have a friend who is originally from rural Alaska, and some of the stories she told me are just wild. I hope you are safe and well and I wish you all the best! Much love from Slovenia!
I randomly came across your video of the ferry trip, and was thrilled to see part 2 had been uploaded 46 minutes prior. Great video which has inspired me to want to make this trip! Thank you for sharing your adventure!!
A wonderful video - I loved the mixture of personal adventure/experience/reflection and the more documentary style including interviews with people who know what life is really like there.
An awesome video. My sister used to live here and was lucky enough to visit once. It's changed a lot. Thanks for stirring up fond memories of high prices, my first ocean/harbor fishing trip in the pouring rain, visiting the neighbors and some of the old war relics. A wonderful video...Thanks!!!
I was commercial fisherman in the 80s and 90s. In the late 90s I had a job lined up to go up there to Dutch Harbor, the night before leaving I had a very clear dream of my boat sinking. I stayed down here on the Gulf coast.
you story line, your photography and the editing, are such hard time-consuming tasks, you surmount all of these and give all of us a wonderful viewing experience...thank you from a long-time viewer in Connecticut
Juneau the capital, but Anchorage is the largest city. Love your vids. BTW - If you travel back through Kodiak there is a mountain that if you fly in you stop before running into face first - barometer Mtn. You should take a hike if you have a few hours to kill and the weather nice.
Wow, I'm so glad I found this channel. Eva's videos remind me of the beauty of this world and how many different ways of living in it there are. I live in NYC - or live trapped here - and these perspectives help so much
Eva, if that's a Ford Escape, the back seats ( section you actually sit on) fold up and forward and then can be taken out altogether. Once they're removed the backs of the seats fold down all the way, and you can sleep back there perfectly flat. I'm six foot, and have camped in my Escape for weeks and slept very well. Also, once the back seats are taken out, the front driver seat goes almost all the way down. That's also a great way to sleep. Sorry this is after the fact, but maybe next time you rent an Escape you can try that.
Great video once again. I love following your travels. One tiny point of information - Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, which half of the state's population; however, Juneau is the capital of Alaska. Thanks for being one of my favorite travel vloggers.
The views in this video, of this island, are simply majestic. The sheer beauty of this planet is on full display. I am humbled by it. Thank you so much for sharing. Visiting here has been added to my bucket list.
I live in Alaska & been in Dutch Harbor, those mountains are deep, just to go all the way up there it takes all your breath😅... "To live in Alaska, you really have to think a lot about you, after a while you find the strength to be in between beauty and this unique place on earth.." Good luck from Alaska! ❤
What a cool place. Usually people go to places they can drive to or at least fly so this was a completely new scene and it definitely felt attractive because I love seeing such remote spots. The landscape seems similar to the Greenland and the Faroe Islands from what I've seen.
Eva, excellent video. Your interviews drew such honest reflections from those working and living in that harsh environment. You captured a joy from everyone, deck hands, captains, and scientists that surprised me. It doesn’t seem to matter where you go, intellect and thoughtfulness can be found. Such a simple premise, go to one of the most remote places in America to see what it’s all about and it turns out to be beautiful. One of your best. ✌🏼
I just want to tell you how much I LOVE your show! I look forward to it every week! Loved the update on your dog too. Thank you for sharing this remote and beautiful part of the US with us!! And the interviews with the locals! Safe travels 😊🌷🌺
I really agree with Loren. I like that there are places that are difficult to get to, and places that demand something of you in return for the privilege of seeing them.
OK Eva, Thank you for finding this place and videoing it for all the world to see. You are a very special person to think up this kind of thing and put together such a great video on it. I'm sure everyone has some knowledge of Deadliest Catch, but who knew the insider stuff you presented. You do such great work. Thank you for presenting such a wild and unspoiled place. This was a riveting video. It's no wander why you have 1.7M subs. I keep you in my prayers for safe passages and fun revelations. ben/ michigan
I have to say, this is one of the best, down to earth videos I've seen on my beloved state of Alaska. You really captured how it feels to live in Alaska. Very few visitors and almost no videographers really bother to truly understand Alaska. You have done it. Thank you for this wonderful and accurate glimpse that captures the real spirit of Alaska and the spirit of the people who live there.
Dutch harbor has always been on my bucket list of places to see and even more so now after watching your video. I love your perspective, I think that is what I most enjoy about your channel.
Eva thank you for once again sharing the world with us! Your curiosity and adventurous spirit take us to places we either have never heard of or will never be able to visit. I watch and enjoy every single video irrespective of where it is in the world. I have been following your channel ever since your expeditions in the middle East and wait each week in anticipation for the next one. Bon Voyage beautiful Eva.
Eva, you are my dream girl, someone who shares my own sense of adventure, someone who I could connect with so easily. I have followed you since your very first video. And YES, I can do totally see you picking DH as your new remote home in America, it's just far away enough away, without being to remote. If you EVER come back, please allow me to show you some amazing spots that you missed in this video. I admire your strength, courage, and insight so much. THANK YOU ! ! ! !
Absolutely love your videos Eva, obviously your content, filmmaking, fine art artistic features, honesty, landscape videography is top notch, so perfect, of the highest standards. But for me the most beautiful thing about your channel is who you are, you are such a sweet person that makes your creations such a pleasure to watch. Thank you Eva, I wish you the best of the universe, much love & metta, 🙏❤️☺️, umesh :)
Eva, thank you, I never knew that there was a line of small island strength out into the ocean, Always appreciate what you have to share on your journey...❤
Loren’s interview was my favorite. I also enjoyed hearing from the boat captain. Not many Alaskans even have the opportunity to visit Dutch Harbor. It’s costly and remote to get to.
Challenges make peoples special but some accept & some avoid…it depends person to person. In this episode I like your hiking challenging part & interaction with locals. Magnificent Landscape. It’s a worth watching …Thank you
I got the opportunity to meet the late, great Captain Phil Harris from The Deadliest Catch just a few months before he passed. He was such a real person, about as real as it gets. He didn’t care about the fame the show brought him, he just thought of himself as a regular guy doing a job. It was a genuine pleasure meeting him.
Good video. Interesting. I've been to Bristol Bay, Alaska which is about the same size. They used to be a wealthy town from the fishing but they've fished out the Bering Sea near there so the fleet has shrunk to very little and the town is just there. I admire you getting so far out there. Really good drone work.
FYI, re your description of the Aleutian Island chain habitation as "continual," the correct word is 'continuous,' which refers to something that happens without interruption. 'Continual' refers to something that recurs frequently or regularly. Great video. Thanks much.
👋Eva, thank you for the great interview of these fishermen. Truly, they risk their lives and why seafood can be expensive. Also, the town locals👍💯 stay warm❣️🥰

Not as closed off as you would think. There are 5-10k seasonal workers there every year from all over the world.
@ryanmorgan5677 Wow, that's insane!
@@laurenrsThe regular population is just about 5,000, so having 5-10k seasonals at all times means you’re used to all kinds of people.
I think it helped that she was soooooo Beautiful. She could be invited anywhere with no problem.
@@glennchristie2316 What a cringe comment!
Wow, I'm in awe of your tenacity & bravery.
Your holistic attitude to life is not only impressive & inspirational but also insightful to different world 🌍.
Nuff respect.
Another beautiful video Eva. About a year ago I turned my 15-year-old granddaughter
on to your channel. She was immediately hooked and eagerly awaits each new episode. The
really nice thing is , they've made for a lot of conversation between a teenager and her old Papa that
I wouldn't have had otherwise , so thank you.
Also, I absolutely NEED a truck like that 😍
Keep it up, stay safe, thanks for the great views.🍻
This was such a fascinating video! I can't travel much, but I do have a friend who is originally from rural Alaska, and some of the stories she told me are just wild. I hope you are safe and well and I wish you all the best! Much love from Slovenia!
I lived there in 97 and it is truly a magical place. It's brutal, beautiful and unforgiving. Great job showing the world this amazing place!
Hi Eva, absolutely loved it. It was as good if not better than anything the BBC could have made. Thank you.
I have to say, you have balls walking up to these strangers and asking questions in that part of the country......awesome stuff miss Eva
I am proud that such a beautiful island is named after my native language 'Dutch'. Another beautiful video.
The island is named Unalaska. Not Dutch Harbor. Dutch Harbor is a small bay where the port is.
I was commercial fisherman in the 80s and 90s. In the late 90s I had a job lined up to go up there to Dutch Harbor, the night before leaving I had a very clear dream of my boat sinking. I stayed down here on the Gulf coast.
Good God, man. Cliffhanger. Did the boat sink?
@@JeffLevyForPresident I have no idea, I just had a bad feeling about the whole thing. I've learned to follow those feelings. I never looked back.
you story line, your photography and the editing, are such hard time-consuming tasks, you surmount all of these and give all of us a wonderful viewing experience...thank you from a long-time viewer in Connecticut
You are either running away from something or towards something - love that! Reminds me of "not all who wanders are lost" :)
Calming, mysterious and breathtaking,I just can't describe how beautiful this place is❤Keep safe always Eva❤
Juneau the capital, but Anchorage is the largest city. Love your vids.
BTW - If you travel back through Kodiak there is a mountain that if you fly in you stop before running into face first - barometer Mtn. You should take a hike if you have a few hours to kill and the weather nice.
Thanks for fixing her glaring error. Eva needs to continue on west to Adak. Dutch Harbor is too easy.
@@JeffLevyForPresident Or St. Paul island. Lol
Wow, I'm so glad I found this channel. Eva's videos remind me of the beauty of this world and how many different ways of living in it there are. I live in NYC - or live trapped here - and these perspectives help so much
Not only fascinating content but such a high quality production too. I love your approach Eva; respectful, friendly and insightful. Thanks so much.
Eva this was a great episode, the photography, the narration, the interviews and just your take on everything.
Oh, Eva, Eva. Alaskan here. You stopped short of Attu, another 600-ish miles to the West. And our capital is Juneau, not Anchorage.
Excellent production value! You're a master story-teller Ms. Eva.
I live in Alaska & been in Dutch Harbor, those mountains are deep, just to go all the way up there it takes all your breath😅...
"To live in Alaska, you really have to think a lot about you, after a while you find the strength to be in between beauty and this unique place on earth.."
Good luck from Alaska!
❤
Wow Eva! This video is so beautiful! I love how you connect with people and let us hear their stories! Thank you for that!
Your superpower is having people open up to you. Special!
I just want to tell you how much I LOVE your show! I look forward to it every week! Loved the update on your dog too. Thank you for sharing this remote and beautiful part of the US with us!! And the interviews with the locals! Safe travels 😊🌷🌺
Awesome video as always Eva zu Beck. This is such a beautiful place and the people are so friendly.
Eva, great episode! Very interesting and wonderful landscape videos. Congratulations on the mountain race! 👍
I really agree with Loren. I like that there are places that are difficult to get to, and places that demand something of you in return for the privilege of seeing them.
The beauty is overwhelming. The Alaskan scenery isn't bad, either.
Your videos make me feel like I am there experiencing these beautiful places myself. You have such a talent.
WOW!! Beautiful scenery! The townsfolk were so sweet. Looking forward to the next video. Stay safe. Hugs from Texas.
They were the best! I was so grateful to have met some of the people who live and work there.
Such a small world! I moved to Dutch Harbor a week or so right before this was filmed. It is truly a wonderful community
Evičko jsi stále lepši a lepši, přeji ješte mnoho uspěchů, tvůj dědeček by byl ohromen...good luck
This is absolutely stunning 🤩 Nature at its best! Thanks for the beautiful images.
Dutch harbor has always been on my bucket list of places to see and even more so now after watching your video. I love your perspective, I think that is what I most enjoy about your channel.
Adorable style of documentary including interviews video! 😊
Thank you :)
Stunning in every respect. Filmography, story telling, editing - Just amazing.
I’m new here! Thanks to UA-cam for recommending your channel. Stunning work, Eva! Glad I found you.
This is really a special episode. Loved it thoroughly.
THANK YOU ! ! ! !
This was such an incredible journey, thank you for taking us with you! We
I really like it when you interact with the locals. It’s a nice touch
Amazing footage! Thank you for showing us a corner of the country I may never see. I'm glad to see you're still traveling!!
Eva, thank you, I never knew that there was a line of small island strength out into the ocean, Always appreciate what you have to share on your journey...❤
It was also a WWII battleground. The Japanese tried to invade the islands.
@@markmitchell457 Thanks for your enlightenment…
Loren’s interview was my favorite. I also enjoyed hearing from the boat captain.
Not many Alaskans even have the opportunity to visit Dutch Harbor. It’s costly and remote to get to.
Challenges make peoples special but some accept & some avoid…it depends person to person.
In this episode I like your hiking challenging part & interaction with locals.
Magnificent Landscape.
It’s a worth watching …Thank you
wonderful video ! thank you for sharing, the talks with the locals have got to be some of my favourite aspects of your videos
I didn’t know there was a community on those islands 🤔Thanks for sharing 🇺🇸greetings from Norway 🇳🇴
Interesting! And thank you!
I've been enjoying your channel for a while now. I don't usually comment on anyone's videos, but your content is superior! Really loved this video. You've taken the saying " A little out of the way place," to a whole new level!
Hope you're doing well Eva, I loved the episode ❤
I love how that store's in the middle of fng nowhere and it's better stocked and more spacious than anything in Europe.
Eva, thank you for this totally amazing and inspiring video of such a remote and beautiful place. I am amazed that people live quite happily in such a harsh climate. Enjoy your journey. Regards from Cape Town.
