I cannot stress enough how important it is to take winter seriously when thinking of moving up here. It is very dark, very cold, for a very long time. The only way around the long, bitter cold is to stay in Anchorage and anywhere south of Anchorage. Still bitter, still cold, just not for nearly as long as everywhere north of Eagle River.
Hi Martha, I currently live in Tucson, Arizona and am absolutely sick of the brutal heat and dry desert. I'm originally from Dallas, TX and even lived in Dover, De and absolutely love winter. I'm also a film student and will be graduating next year where I will be moving to California to get my career started. But once I get "successful" enough I'd love to visit and possibly move to Anchorage. Again I love the cold and love nature and I'm even more creative at night...which Alaska has plenty of. This vide was very helpful and would love to stay in touch with you . I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank You.
I can relate -- I have lived in Phoenix/Scottsdale for almost 40 years, and I am beyond sick of the heat, rattlesnakes, scorpions, etc. Hope to make the move to Alaska before too long
I lived and worked in Fairbanks, Alaska for 4 years as a TV producer. I moved away to Los Angeles in 2008, which turned out to be the exactly opposite of a smart move because that's the year the recession started and the year before Alaska totally blew up as a place to find reality TV and documentary work. I would recommend just skipping Los Angeles and moving to AK and taking whatever job you can get. Yeah it's expensive up there but not nearly as expensive or as much of a rat race as Los Angeles. In Anchorage, the main guy to go to for video production is Jon Butzke at Talking Circle, who I would recommend getting in contact with either way.
Just a heads up, you might want to look into the night aspect for your night life activities. In the winter it is dark, but in the summer it is light pretty late as I am guessing you probably already know. So outdoor day activities is a plus, night activities are probably going to be a negative.
@@mushroomking8304 that kind of day/night schedule will suit me just fine. Daytime is when I prefer to go out and nights I like to stay in and either work (paint, write, sculpt, ECT).
I think the only consideration I haven't made is the outdoorsy bit. I'm living in Texas, and I really want out of the oppressive heat. It's a thing where I would be more outdoors if I wasn't as hot. I don't have any ambition of having "40 acres," or living "off the grid." I just want to work and chill (literally, figuratively.)
Think about northern Idaho or western Montana instead. Alaska outdoors is extremely rugged and even off-putting in some places. The lower 48 has much “happier” wilderness.
this was super helpful! ive always loved places like alaska and am really considering going to university there, however being from texas the change will be drastically different and am definitely not prepared lol
I love Alaska I live in western Montana now...I know it gets a lot colder then here.... I am still learning how to keep my goats, chickens and geese alive..... once I figure it out I will sell my off grid home and move....
Hi!! I totally understand this is quite a while after you’ve posted, but my husband and I are moving to Alaska for the military. I am a southern girl through and through and have NO IDEA where to shop/how to shop for affordable clothes or what clothes I need! Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thank you in advance!!
Like she said it's very expensive here and very dark in the Winter time. But in the summer time you better get used to sleep in with daylight 24 hours And you better learn how to drive in snow With black ice. And it's very cold 🥶.I was born and raised right here in Kenai Alaska. I ❤ it here
I always dreamed of the idea of living somewhere somewhat isolated from where I originally am, and since I know Alaska became a comfort zone as a first choice, I hope to have the opportunity to go one day and stay for a while. Long.
We are seriously considering making the move to AK. I'm in nursing school and my husband is a union ironworker. We live in SoCal already so used to the high cost of living. Any advice? We also own our home here and according to Zillow it's worth like 140k more than we bought it for. May help us?
There's internet in the populated areas. I heard we just got Starlink so you'll be able to get internet anywhere now. Of course, you can do whatever you like indoors at your home or with friends etc. But there are just not a lot of indoor options for activities like you see in some of the lower 48 states. We don't have many big malls, theme parks, etc.
im moving with 2,000 dollars whats the best way to make that happen why i find a job within 30 days. i need to move now. i cannot take it another day where i live. i cant do this bullshit anymore. please help me. im coming from slc to alaska.
We had a lot of -30 and below nights and -20 days here in January 2024, and at least one -30 day/night in January 2023, and we are in a milder part. It’s not a big deal if it lasts a day or 2 but when it goes on for weeks it can be brutal, especially if your house is hard to heat or you heat with wood. Those very cold days are most likely to happen in January.
So I’m wondering about children with disabilities like autism there🤷🏾♀️If they have ABA other things for help . We may be moving there for my husband’s job and we have a daughter with autism.
Hi there! I would check out LINKS Resource Center linksprc.org/about/ and Hearts and Hands of Care www.heartsandhandsofcare.com/services/ I hope this helps!
I entertained taking a job in Anchorage that pays well, but after watching videos on living in Alaska, nah, it ain't ever gonna happen. Keep your polar bears and meese. That is the plural of moose, is it not?🤔

I was a resident of the state of Alaska for 17 years. The scenery there is beautiful beyond belief. Alaska is my favorite place in the world

I’m from California. Thank you for this video god bless I was thinking moving to Alaska thank you for these tips
In Vegas everything is flown in daily. It is an island in a sea of sand. So groceries are very affordable. Lots of competition.
Thank you for so much good information! I'm still in the research stage but I must admit that I am interested! Thanks again. Walt
Let me know if you have any questions, Walt!
Very informative! Thank you for sharing this. Hope to see more from you!
It’s expensive in the lower 48 😅😂as well
Excellent advice, thank you!

In AK life ain't easy in the winter but the people make the suffering worthwhile.
Very informative indeed.

There's just nowhere like it is there! How much snow are you guys getting on the peninsula? We're getting buried in the valley!
We got so much snow but no where to put it I haven't seen snow like this Since I was a kid..
I'm planing to move to Alaska when I get a vehicle and I graduate from highschool even tho it's expensive
Very informative, thanks Martha

How are jobs for truck drivers. Like fuel hauling
Alaska can’t be that expensive like in California right?
Do not exclude Hawaii please.
My broker did a video all about cost of living in Alaska. Search "Valley Market Real Estate" on youtube.
It’s pretty similar. I have lived in both places. Even a condo or basic house is $400k+.
I love every aspect, hypothermia convinced me, expect me next year

What kind of work do you do? Where do you want to live? Anchorage? Mat-Su? Somewhere else in Alaska?
Anything extra to know if you're single, is it harder to make dues? Im an a&p mechanic and would love to move there for work
Hello, I am looking to relocate to Alaska. Can you assist me in this matter?
informative, thanks.
Hi! How cold does it get there in January? Im strongly considering living there for a few months but I have anemia, is it recommended that I still go?
January is the coldest month and it's pretty short day light. It can be anything from 15F to -20F. Not good for people with anemia.

Would Alaska be good to move for my retirement with my family!! I am from India though so how hard can it get to move?
Do you have high speed internet access?
In most populated areas we do. It varies, though. Check out gci.com and mtasolutions.com

How are you doing
Is a passport required to move to, and or travel to Alaska, from the lower 48 states?
Alaskans play hard during the summer.
Not planning on moving there anytime!!
There is literally a road that leads from Washington state to Anchorage and Fairbanks 🙄
Correct.
And you have to drive through Canada, which is a very unfriendly, unfun place to roadtrip and it takes almost a week to get back to a US border.
I entertained taking a job in Anchorage that pays well, but after watching videos on living in Alaska, nah, it ain't ever gonna happen. Keep your polar bears and meese. That is the plural of moose, is it not?🤔
Anchorage is easy Alaska living though. Any time you’re in a city, those things don’t matter as much. There’s no polar bears in Anchorage.

It's Dark & Cold; sounds like Detroit; however, I'm still not detered; find me some acres five to ten; Martha; thanks in advance.
Why is this being shown to me
Number one don't go
@T Zoids Ten feet of snow and no white tail deer to hunt
Plus I'm single too and I need a girlfriend over there
good luck there are few ladies in Alaska.... I can tell you many reasons why....
Judging by your comment you belong where you are....
Lol... if you think you're gonna need a gf..you might want to simplify things for yourself and just stay where your are.😉
