Just back from Fairbanks, I could live there but my wife would be miserable. I’ve made some great friends and it truly is an outdoor paradise. I’ll have to settle for vacations there.
Hi @donpatsy3152 It sounds like you had a fantastic time in Fairbanks! It really is an outdoor paradise, with so much to explore. I can see how it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, though. Vacations there are a great way to enjoy it without the commitment! What were some of your favorite activities while you were visiting?
We have lived outside of Fairbanks for over 30 years. We love the warm summers and gardening, canoeing, fishing, backpacking. We love our neighbors that are always helpful. We love that there is an International Airport 15 minutes away. We love the sugar snow for cross-country skiing and snowmachining. We love big game hunting and fishing for huge fish to fill the freezer. We love that there is no traffic lights across a thousand miles of highway from Fox to Circle, North Pole to Valdez, Fox to Manely Hot Springs, Ester to Healy, etc.
It was great hearing from you today, Justin! TY Glad I found ur channel. We are a fam of four considering a move to Fairbanks from northern NY this summer.

Lived here in Fairbanks for 20+ years. I live in Fox right outside of it now and we mind our own business but all our neighbors know each other and we do help each other out often. In Fairbanks itself you'll noticed we have a crack/meth head problem they love going to Walmart/Lowe's/home Depot and steal all sorts of goodies. Had a light bar stolen off my truck when going in the store to grocery shop. Military wise it is a military town and being stationed here I'd advise especially to new military that they go out often and enjoy the nature and not just latch onto Wainwright or Fairbanks. I also served and this was my last duty station so I'm honestly not just talking from one side but from both civi and military side. Don't go out and party because most the "clubs" are trashy places that only spawn garbage and have the same people causing the same drama for the past years. Many of military marriages are ruined in these wonderful clubs.
I was born and raised in Fairbanks ak but moved to fl Fairbanks Alaska is no nice there like the winches for Summers the northern lights everything about ak is nice there it’s a nice beautiful small town

Thanks for doing this video!!! I have been living in Fairbanks since 2005. Although I originally came here when my father first got stationed at Fort Wainwright back in 1987. I happen to agree with your list of reasons not to move up here. However, I would also like to add that Fairbanks lacks any major chain restaurants such as Chili's, Outback Steakhouse, Golden Corral, etc. Because if you wish to go to these places you'll have to go to Anchorage.
@@DiscoverFairbanks Actually, the town of Wasilla is much closer to Anchorage. Whereas Fairbanks is 358 miles north of this city. I only fly down to Anchorage to celebrate my birthday which in January.
As well as IHOP, Popeyes, DQ, Burger King (since 2007), Panda Express, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Applebee's, Denny's (since 2022), and Dave & Buster's (Arby's recently returned to Fairbanks after a decades-long hiatus); in terms of retailers: Target, Kohl's, Burlington, Best Buy, and CVS, while the Fifth Avenue Mall has the only Apple Store, Michael Kors, and Victoria's Secret in Alaska. Anchorage is able to support these because they're a Top 150 TV market (#146) while Fairbanks is #202.

I was born in the early 60's in Fairbanks and left in 2013 yet own land there and a cabin...so the Beauty of the land, the cultures of the true Alaskan natives who are humble, proud, tough and deserve respect as they are the true stewards of the great land. People are independant in Alaska and love the freedom they have. Either you love it or hate it yet those who hate it do not belong and are not meant to be there. The northern lights, pink fireweed, salmon for dinner, campfires and smores with friends, beautiful skies and friendly people --
Your comment about a "special breed of people" in Fairbanks cracked me up. I'm curious as to how many people you know in that category have lived in Alaska since it was a US Territory?
My parents moved the in 1949. I was born there in 51. I graduated there and saw my children born there. It was a great place to grow up and start a family. The more outsiders that don't go there to ruin the place the better.
Nice presentation of the Fairbanks facts but I think you should try a little harder to get your photo/video stock to be at least from Alaska if not Fairbanks. It sort of hits a jarring note to see hardwood trees and manicured lawns when talking about that nice wild place we live.
I spent a a total of 8 years in the Fairbanks area '80-'88. Two and a half years in the army at Fort Wainwright, five and a half years as a civilian, four of which I was a full time student at The University of Alaska Fairbanks. I tell people Fairbanks is an open air septic field with an army post on one side and a university on the other. I tell people that in Alaska, if you can get two people to agree on anything you can start a political party, and if you can get five people to agree on anything you can start a religion.
James Yahnke I'm surprised we didn't run into each other. I was there from 81 to 92. Loved UAF. I lived in the music department there. Also spent a lot of time at the dog track. I loved Fairbanks.

The SUN is your first reason to not come here? Really? Put aluminum foil on your bedroom windows, shiny side out. Or invest in black out curtains. Easy and cheap. Some footage of snow but no comments on the winters here? Again. Really? The winters are my number one reason to not live here and I've lived here pretty much all my life. @@moreayf2319 There you go. The fact that homeless can freeze to death is unlikely to encourage many new tent dwellers, that are a blight in most cities down south.
It doesn't get Fairbanks cold in Northern MI but we've got tent cities in many northern Michigan towns as well, and it get to -20 once in a while, certainly often times below 0... it's amazing that those folks would rather tent it in the frozen wooded areas near town than somehow get enough money for a bus and head to warmer climates.@@raywest3834
Yeah, but the people in Fairbanks are not Wasilla Weird. Fairbanks has very bad airpollution due to wood stoves and being in the interior, which sucks all the filthy air downwards, Fairbanks is dreadfully hot in the summer as well. Fairbanks is a college town. Fairbanks has less trails and mountains to explore than many towns in Alaska. Also, it floods a lot. You have a few big rivers flooded by Spring breakup. One good thing is Fairbanks has an REI and you can buy new or used gear there.
No one needs to convince me not to move to Fairbanks. I grew up in Anchorage and went to Fairbanks a few times but Fairbanks is one of the ugliest cities I've seen.
Fairbanks is like a small city there are problems but they stay in their neighborhoods. Anchorage has people all over the road all year long. Surprisingly it gets worse during the winter. All of Alaska is a little worrying but Fairbanks it’s the place to be
@@DiscoverFairbanks - I lived in Fairbanks for 18 out of my 25 years in Alaska (1979-2004). I have family there, visit frequently plus follow the news. Once again, Fairbanks has a very high crime rate, including murder. Please don’t try and lecture me.
@@devinparks7150 - Alaska is a little worrying? With Alaska being #1 of all 50 states for the worst crime statistics, I’d say it’s more than a little worrying.
Cool place and so different from anywhere else in the US, but I did not find the people in Fairbanks friendly at all. When I walked into stores was never acknowledged and unfriendly hotel staff.
That may be true for its older population. My entire family is all Republican, but in all the high schools most the people there lean more to the left.
Fairbanks is becoming more liberal all the time. It’s a college town plus not as many people connected with the extraction industries (oil, mining) as it was during the boom years.
Depends on the side of Fairbanks you live on. West Fairbanks it’s quite liberal. The closer you are to the UAF campus you will find a lot of liberals. Go to the east side and closer to north pole youll find a lot of conservatives.

Glad made you laugh hope you enjoy the video! Have you been living around here in Alaska?
Nice presentation of the Fairbanks facts but I think you should try a little harder to get your photo/video stock to be at least from Alaska if not Fairbanks. It sort of hits a jarring note to see hardwood trees and manicured lawns when talking about that nice wild place we live.
Thanks for the tip! Will do better next time. Anyway, do you currently live here in Alaska?
That was really interesting James! Just curious if you have built or started either of them? 🤔
@@DiscoverFairbanks ; Nope. I have as little to do with the world as possable.
Military mainly are trophy hunters and don't understand Alaska-so it is good you left
I'd like a copy of that relocation guide! I'm an expat who's been living in the Philippines for 4 years now, but it looks like I'll be relocating to Fairbanks sometime next year for work. Talk about a big change. I currently live just 400 miles north of the equator, so it'll be literally night and day.

Anchorage is bad enough. Now I would do Glennallen.... Glacier View school area
@Apex Realty Group AK Terminus of the Matanuska Glacier. Water is going to be in short supply some day
Glad to hear that! Hope everything will work out for you there David. 🙌
grew up in florida by the water the mosquitos don't bother me lol
Hi @dvdcollector35! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.🥳
I people don't Ike fairbanks leave! People are very helpful here! I have lived here for40 years and wouldn't live anywhere else! The lower 48 can just stay down there! We like our different kind of people!
I agree, my father is still there on Birch Hill. He had no desire for any other place. I may have still been there if the need for work didn't take me outside. My mother moved to north west Washington so I came her to watch after her. Now the kids and grandkids keep me here. Took my wife there many years ago and she loved it.
Thank you all for watching and sharing your thoughts! 🙏 For sure there are a lot of things to love about Fairbanks, and I know each one of you will agree right?
I always wanted to vacation in Alaska but not there
Hey @carmenthompson9803! Alaska is definitely worth visiting! The scenery is incredible, and the outdoor adventures are endless. I totally get wanting to explore without making the move. Have you thought about which part you'd like to visit?
You made a very helpful video
Glad it helped
Thank you! Are you planning to move or visit here?

When I lived in Fairbanks from 74-03 we burned our lawns every fall so the grass would be epic in spring. When I went back in 2013 when my dad passed… not impressed.
Wow, burning it, that's impressive! I wonder where did you get the idea? 🤔
I didn’t know y’all had palm trees in Fairbanks. I didn’t see any the last time I was there.
Sorry for the video clip. Yeah, there was nothing here. 🙏 When is the last time you visited here Chuck?
Does it get cold during the winter?
Absolutely! 💯 Are you thinking of moving or visiting here?
Use citronella soap, the mosquitoes will avoid you like the plauge.
Interesting! Did you use citronella soap as a natural insect repellent to help deter mosquitoes and other biting insects?🤔
The weather, the dark, the distance
Can you take all of it?🤔

Lived up there 32 years give me a chance i will be back
Awesome @TheTruckerlyn! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.🙌💯
I was born here in Fairbanks.
Hey @billiehenry4685, What’s your favorite part of living here?
Ill keep you in mind never know 😅
Hey @TheTruckerlyn! Are there any particular neighborhoods or areas you’d like me to cover?🤔
Oh, i absolutely hope people don't move here. The Alaskan character in Anchorage changed when all these people moved up. Local joke about Anchorage is that its only 5 minutes from Alaska! 😆
Love Fairbanks just the way it is, quirks, weather, state 'birds' and all
Awesome @user-ll2st3uv8l! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.🙌💯
Ah sounds like my type of place.
Hi @5speed542! Are you currently in the process of relocating or planning to move here?🤔
@@DiscoverFairbanks we are actually planning on visiting this December to get the lay of the land. With full intention on moving asap after the trip.
Can I get a guide?

I thought you were just going to say the weather and be done with it lol
Have to be honest lol 😂 You planning to move of visit here anywhere in Alaska?
a little sunshine would do you some good
You're not wrong! I do love some Alaskan Summer, and I've been soaking up the sunshine this year!
I always wanted to go to Alaska but not move there
Hey @carmenthompson9803! Alaska is definitely worth visiting! The scenery is incredible, and the outdoor adventures are endless. I totally get wanting to explore without making the move. Have you thought about which part you'd like to visit?
The SUN is your first reason to not come here? Really? Put aluminum foil on your bedroom windows, shiny side out. Or invest in black out curtains. Easy and cheap. Some footage of snow but no comments on the winters here? Again. Really? The winters are my number one reason to not live here and I've lived here pretty much all my life.
Certainly agreed with you about the mosquitoes, the fires, and the people.
@@DiscoverFairbanks all your points are valid, I didn't intend to suggest otherwise. I'm just not sure they were all the best reasons to not move here. things people should know and consider before moving here, yes, I agree with you from that perspective.
Great! I appreciate your insight SeaMist. 🙏
We don't have a homeless problem; thank the weather for that.
@@moreayf2319 There you go. The fact that homeless can freeze to death is unlikely to encourage many new tent dwellers, that are a blight in most cities down south.
Homeless have been increasing lately everywhere. You think so guys? 🤔
That's a lot of insight. Just curious if you have live here and experience all of these? 🤔
No one needs to convince me not to move to Fairbanks. I grew up in Anchorage and went to Fairbanks a few times but Fairbanks is one of the ugliest cities I've seen.
I must say, each place has their own uniqueness. Are you still currently living in n Anchorage what's great about you city?
Curious as to why no mention of the high crime rate….one of the highest in the nation.
Yeah Patrick, glad you're still safe after all those visits here. 🙏
oh we weird huh takk about a hater its called caring for others its what real people do
💯🤙
Es recomendable que vayan a vivir los indocumentados latinos?
As long as you comply with the right documents to be submitted,. You planning to move here Ivan?
i wouldnt ask him for no advice someone who not from fairbanks and complains like a bit@@@ but from and ocs worker who dont care about no one
Hi Charlie how long have you been living here in Fairbanks?
Fairbanks isn't as pretty as other parts of alaska but its where all the money is!
Awesome @dano8613! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.🙌💯
Here's another reason the real alaskans that live here don't want you to come we like it just the way it is. That's being polite
Hi Richard, thanks for watching! What's your fave thing about the unique culture and way of life in Alaska?
Put up a bat house. They love mosquitoes!
Have you tried it? Does it work for you? 🤔
Greetings from North Pole everyone. I don’t need to watch. I already know.
What you think after watching? Is it the same? 😂
😂🎉
Hey Lori fisher! Do you live in the area? 🤔
Cool place and so different from anywhere else in the US, but I did not find the people in Fairbanks friendly at all. When I walked into stores was never acknowledged and unfriendly hotel staff.
I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience about some people davewest! What else happened?😱
or i meant us weird ppl do
😂
#1 - #2 - #3
Meth - homelessness - crime
What's #4 and #5?
@@DiscoverFairbanks #4 and #5 were grifted from the first 3 - just that tan line where the numbers belong.
Fairbanks is one of the most reactionary, right wing places in Alaska.
That why I'm looking to living there plus property or life laws
That may be true for its older population. My entire family is all Republican, but in all the high schools most the people there lean more to the left.
Fairbanks is becoming more liberal all the time. It’s a college town plus not as many people connected with the extraction industries (oil, mining) as it was during the boom years.
Everyone is a deadeye with a rifle
Depends on the side of Fairbanks you live on. West Fairbanks it’s quite liberal. The closer you are to the UAF campus you will find a lot of liberals. Go to the east side and closer to north pole youll find a lot of conservatives.
I can think of more than 5
What are those? Can you share ?
Kill what you have to the mosquitos must go.
Any tips on how to do it Douglas? 😂
Oh, God no, anything but the mosquitoes, noooooooo 😭
There are preventions that could help relieve this dilemma. Have you thought of moving here? 🤔
Spoiler alert: this guy loves fairbanks.
I do love it here 💯. How about you what do you love about Fairbanks?
