China Miéville is the name of the author. The book is Perdido Street Station.
Its a great piece of literary work full of imaginative concepts and exotic creatures. Certainly a great read, especially if you're into a magic/steampunk mixture (runepunk?).

Feng, I just wanted to take some time to thank you for uploading these videos. I learned more from you and other great youtubers than I did in Art School I hope you know that. Also I'm glad you are on youtube and hope you continue with it for a long time. Since I don't have the luxury to go to Singapore to go to you school I just want to thank you again for the fantastic videos.

from watching all of his videos, hes gonna say that its never too late. he even gave an example of one person who started at his 40s i think? but Feng says its alot of work and practice. and in my personal point of view i think its never too late. just go to an art school and practive every day. not just fantasy stuff but foundation and the reason behind each object and design u put into it.

@ColdDegree0 - It is done using a mask, that way you paint on the canvas but all the areas in black are masked out keeping the edges solid. if he did a brush stroke straight down the canvas it would appear in all three unmasked areas but not in the black area.

This is great. I got a work I need to hand in to apply for an Architecture line in a uni. It's designing a bug city and I found this video and the book very inspirational. Thank you!

@dataphreak It is actually a single canvas, he just puts a layer with black frames for each picture at the top of it all. But you could also have three different files open t the same time in different windows or tabes inside Photoshop.

Half way through I was thinking "What the hell is that? How's he ever going to pull that together and make sense of it?" and then a few highlights and details and suddenly it's looking amazing!
I love your foresight. That's something I've always lacked in my work as I get way too caught up in details.

Just wanted to thank you Feng for your videos.
I love it, how you're able to explain everything you're doing or thinking.
Every decision is backed up with sole knowledge and experience and seldom (or never) with an opinion withouht explanation.
Its cool, that you've done this vid on interiors.
    A suggestion for another vid:
Scenes with strong cast shadows, that would be cool. I allways have troubles, getting the shadows right (I should probalby study more perspective-drawing).

I was wondering that too! My guess is that he has black picked as the foreground color, and white as background, and he's hitting the X key to toggle between them, and hitting numbers to control opacity (i.e. 5=50%).

Yagharek was a garuda though, and did in fact look like a bird, and used to have feathered bird-esque wings. It's just that the predominant non-human species in the city was insectoid. Can't recall the name of the species.

The brush your painting with, I am trying to mimic its settings from what I am watching. And it isn't working, it would be great if you could help me out with making a setting what will react the same way inside Photoshop as yours. If you do not understand what I mean, I am looking at your brush, and it almost looks like your painting with oils - I really would like to have a brush setting what can mimic this.
    Thankyou

Hey Feng, could you do an episode on some blizzard fantasy painting styles for environments? I haven't quite seen you do this yet.... The MMORPG Landscapes episode is close...but if you look at Peter Lee from Blizzard's work that's more what I'm talking about.... Lot of big titan characters...managing larger than life characters placed variously in perspective....
