Design Cinema - EP 98 - Cinematic Lighting
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2024
- In this episode, we focus on cinematic lighting. By treating photographic environments as physical film locations, we approach the image from a completely different mindset. Instead of thinking about how to paint, we focus on where to place stage lights.
The lighting setup used in this episode is utilized by many Hollywood films. By placing a backlight behind the subject, it creates a silhouette that’s easy to read. For students who are learning, this process is less intimidating and places the emphasis on thinking rather than painting.

Just wanted to send some love to this channel, this is the type of art content the world needs more of!
Hey Feng, stop saying that these tutorials are only for people wanting to learn digital painting. I'm an architect and a 3D artist I don't even have a wacom. I'm here because I'm learning a lot. You're helping me tons when I'm designing buildings or gardens or interiors etc. by teaching me how to think straight. And then when I need to make a 3D visualization of the project to present to the client I'm using your knowledge on composition and lighting and stuff... Every type of art can easily translate into another one, the laws are the same. Even for music and sound. So thank you, sir.
I'm an illustrator and this is literally how we light every scene. He's not joking when he says 95% in cinema and it's prob close to that in illustration. It gets a bit mindless at times, but the goal behind it is always valid, which is to make the characters and important elements read instantly. It sorta annoyed me when I learned this (on the job, like Feng) bc I spent literally years learning to paint "realistically" e.g., outdoors from life, etc. But then most of what you paint in industry is fake. lol
Totally agree. I have a question, when it comes to architecture visulisation, do agree with the formula of making the building medium lit and the backkground lighter ?
@@Wsm_hsn Depends on the client and type of job. If it would be for my personal portfolio then definitely yes.
@@kwostah oh yea... i just looked at works of arqui9 and other , they had their composition where the building is the brightest .
Do you have your works put up online which i can go thorugh ?
SAME!! this helped me get to the next level!!!
Even Feng is back lit. D:
Your youtube channel got me into the concept art path over 10 years ago, I still come back to them once in a while and always learn something new ❤❤
I can't believe he's giving these lessons for free. This is worth a fortune.
I love these long format 1+ hour videos. Best content on UA-cam! Thanks Feng and FZD.
I heard this before, some concept artists like to make rough thumbnails with a light background, dark forground, and a medium in-between. But this was explained extremely well in easy to understand terms. I'm seeing movies and TV shows in a completely new light. Thanks!
mesmerizing transformations with what seems like easy to use techniques. thanks for another remarkably useful video!
Thank you Feng. You always give us these tips that seem really small, but are incredibly helpful when it comes to speeding up learning and process. I am right now intimidated with making different light schemes and weather for environment and architecture pieces. But with this method, I can change the lighting around as a quick preview to see if what I'm imagining will work or not before I get far into the piece. Amazing time saver.
Thank you for this video! Learning about a new technique always gets me so hyped to get back at it.
Love your content Feng! I would love a video on gathering and shooting good reference, this is something I really struggle with
Absolutely a must watch series. I just found your channel and I cant wait to get my learn on!
Wow sir! I've been watching you for years and your working process is pretty impressive. You give to the viewer the impression that you know very well what you want to achieve and you go there straight forward. It must be a pleasure for clients to work with you.

Wow, I just came back to some videos about lighting and yours captured me! I looked at your videos before, a good while ago, but had stopped really creating anything. Back to it now. This is really great and I'd like to practice on it somehow!
Also, weirdly enough, I have been looking at Roger Deakins speaking on his lighting in Blade Runner 2049! Crazy coincidence, but that lighting keeps me watching!
Yay it is Feng Day, love these videos.
Thanks for this Feng! Super helpful content as always!!

Question:Hi Feng! amazing tutorials! I´ve being studying from this channel for a while, and its amazing the progress I'm making! thank you for this! it means a lot!
QUESTION: in big landscapes this L,M,D "Law" apples the same way?
These are the greatest episodes. Can you do an episode on drawing with perspective to achieve correct foreshortening and proportions? The video on Camera Lens perspective was one of the best videos ever. Thank you!
He has an old one on youtube somewhere its not design cinema though
Buy or go to the library to pick up Scott Robertsons book on perspective. You will go page by page, read it and study until you know it like the back of your hand. If you know all those fundamentals you will not think about perspective as a roadblock, i promise you that.
@Freffo Good stuff. Thanks for the advice. I will make sure to do so.
@@tinktwiceman Look through his video stash here. Many people think the latest is the greatest, but there are millions of vids on youtube never looked at.
Mindblowing episode. Thank you Feng for all this free, top quality content. I'm not an artist or anything but I really enjoy watching these. You knowledge of the business and related subjects is truly impressive. Hats off from Sweden.
Thank you!
Wow this is soooo gonna help me... thanks so much dude 👍
So useful thank you!
Great study !!
thank you!
Fang is on another level.
So just think about separating forms from each other in the context of the lighting.
“ In Concept Art or Design in general your GOAL is to CONVEY a MOOD, and through that MOOD, invoque an EMOTIONAL FEELING in your AUDIENCE! “ CONTRAST is one the Art Principles that is used in Art to capture your audience EMOTIONS! REMEMBER! As a designer YOU ARE NOT selling an illustration! YOU ARE SELLING AN EMOTION! In the enclosed environments for movies Feng showed you, the only way to create CONTRAST and MOOD is by putting light through a window and holding the characters against it to create a silhouette! A silhouette IS CONTRAST and contrast reads visually well on a two dimensional plane. And it too! Creates OVERLAPS and depth which leads your eye to the background environment. Ask yourself the question: Do I want to create a sad, somber, happy or depressing environment? Once you’ve decided on the MOOD, bring all the elements into that picture frame to create it. Look up art and Design Principles! Study them and learn to apply them. Good luck 😊🤜🏼
Except for character concept art, your goal is literally the design itself
Thank you for this so much! One question, when you say "silhouette" referring to the strong light that is lighting the characters from their sides, is it the same thing as "rim light"? Thank you!
one more time, thank u very much
holly crap thanks Feng !
Thanks! :)
SO Feng, you bounce around to a lot of examples. I'm curious, how do you find the line (or know when to cross it?) between looking good, but being nonsense?
i am very thank for this episode. now i solve my problem i dont how to thank u sir
thank you
sir
very good video waiting for your next video peace out
You achieve the cinematic look by subtracting agency from the player. It works in painting & cinema (&pre-rendered backgrounds like PS1 era FF, Resident Evil etc.) because the angle is fixed.
A modern adaption would be "nudged"/anchored camera angles, semi-restricted camera movement (e.g. modern Resident Evil), semi-restricted paths, anticipated destination, context-responsive lighting. e.g. the light behind the house blooms when you are at "the sweet spot" & transitions gradually to lower intensity at gradual thresholds. (somehow feels natural as it mimicks how eyes/camera behave at the presence of a light source.)
Never clicked so fast on a video
Could you please, when you have time, make an episode on how to approach organic forms like bugs/animals with xyz sections drawing and on how you simplify them? I can apply this technique to man-made objects but organic forms devastate me. Thank you anyway for your efforts.
drawabox is a good resource
I would be interested in this as well. I'm curious about how he approaches xyz drawing, digitally. Especially with organic objects like bugs and animals, as well as hard surface like tanks. @FZDSCHOOL
I wish I was in FDZ school
It's funny that you mention turning off the sound when watching movies, this is actually the only way I can watch modern movies nowadays
yes, to study it and not get involved with the story. Once it happens, you are just watching the characters.
thank uuuuuu.....!!!
FENG GREAT TUTORIAL! Im a Professional Set Designer and will never stop being a Student. Thanks for all your wisdom.
lol! I was in that Bond scene!
jeesus, ty for sharing
Great video
@Rita 25 y.o - check my vidéó Hello, you wrote this under my comment so it might get lost. You might wanna also send it directly under the video.
Hi Feng,
I'm really struggling to put my ideas making on different composition thumbnails to finalize my composition before starting the final painting. Please make a tutorial on that.
Thank you.
Hey Feng a quick suggestion. Why don't you do something like Fengs tips. So like really short videos (5mins tops) when you get the time. It would be a really good way to keep the content going while we wait for the big videos. As I know you don't have a lot of time these days and any content from you is good content.
Also I would like to thank you as you have taught me so much with this channel, I've now started working freelance on indie games and movies and it's mainly down to what I have learned here and a class on 3d. Keep it up man!
조아요^
All those examples are light in the night time. Can you do one set that is light with day time?
dope
mesmerizing transformations with what seems like easy to use techniques. thanks for another remarkably useful video!
hey feng i tryed to look at your blog but the pictures wont load is there a problem whit the site? any one know how to fix this?
What about some Moon Landing-50 years aniversary theme for episode 100! Very informative episode on lights (and casted shadows); as probably may know, will be quite interesting to see how light is handled on the over-exposed environment as on the Moon to make it scenic. Or on the landing module, or space shuttle (realizing that same priciple was used on Gravity, First Man or even on the Abyss...). Once the principle explained it makes a lot of sense, a small step from you, but a giant leap for light on understanding. Anyway, thumbs up, always a pleasure watching the episodes.
Where can I find this pictures ? I want to repeat it.
