This just changed everything for me. I'm actually waaaay more confident now. I made a custom brush that was really scattered and had varying opacities, and it just took my painting to the next level. It seems as though working with the round brush always had me thinking as though I was drawing and very clumsily adding values. The form brush makes me think about the line last and form first! Thank you!
these videos are without doubt the most insightful, useful, and awe inspiring tutorials around period. I love the little insights you get into the industry along with the instructional aspects of course. Its amazing how Feng finds the time to keep posting these considering how busy he must be and that's why I can't even express how grateful I am for these. Thanks again Feng for a wonderful tutorial.
I love how you always say "eyeball", it makes me smile XD
Jeez, SO much information packed into 24 minutes. I almost have to watch this more than once to really digest it all...
Design Cinema is THE BEST educational resource on the internet for 2d digital concept art. I am learning so much.
Thanks Feng!!!
Love all of the Design Cinema Episodes! I always was focused on stressing over capturing my references 1:1, but now I see that it would be much more enjoyable to switch it up and focus on understanding
One of the best tutorials I've seen in a long time.
Feng, you are one of the best teachers in the world...It's so impressive! Thumbs up!
@Apothefox One more thing to add. If you want to study what colour work in real life. Take a picture of an object, (like your car, house, etc) on an cloudy overcast day, where is there is no direct light source. Then take a picture of the same object under dawn, sunset and night setting.
That last painting is so good. I love that painted look where the brushstrokes are visible
Wow... just... wow... I think these are just about my favourite pictures Feng has done. Even though they're based on photos, they're hugely impressive.
@Apothefox personally, a good way to start picking colour when painting digitally is start with its local value. Feng mentioned it before and thats what he does in this tutorial as well. Pick a base colour, like leave is green, rock is brown, etc, just you think about how the atmosphere interact with it local value. If its further away, desaturate it. If its close, more saturation, If its in shadow, darken it. If its hit with direct light source, brighten it. Thats pretty how paint works for me.
These videos really help keep me motivated. Thanks so much!
The best FZD video.
Really good painting tutorial, really helped to understand how to paint digitally for traditional painters. Also even if it was from a photo the paintings look very lively, very painterly.
Thank you for what you do.
@kikokoo It's a default Photoshop chalk brush - it comes with the software.
FZ total respect again to you for the most valuable advise and technical perspective - I thought the value and light was so cool - when you squint the image is epic !!!! Thanks
I agree 100% on working in total silence. I feel that is also what my art is about. The art of the subconcious. Great cinema this week. totally makes up for the abcense hehe, a painting for each week away. Keep up the great inspiration Feng!!
My brush will be put up on sale for $200 at the FZD Store later this month. Just kidding. :) (way too many private msg asking me these days)
Guys, you don't need my brush. It's much easier to make your own and experiment. My main chalk brush is a default brush anyway. The "crystal" and "tree" brush are extremely easy to make (someone already posted instructions).
Having too many brush isn't good for learning. Just stick with 1 or 2 (the default hard-round brush is great!).
Magnificent work words of wisdom great to see your videos you do so much for those of us who can't afford it. Thank you so much for sharing your great talent!!
Feng this is one of your best videos ever. Learned so much from it! Would love to see more like these!
You always give really helpful advice in your videos, I'm grateful.
Haha yea! Same here... I have to have some kind of audio to draw. I usually listen to music or even watch movies.
You guys are offering some really good advice....so thanks for that! (Saves me some typing).
Yes, it all takes a LOT of hard work. Many many many hours of painting, drawing, etc. I actually don't even believe in the words "talent" or "gifted." Those words to me basically means "this individual worked really hard to achieve this."
And in this business, you never stop learning. I have so much more to go and things to learn....but that's also what keeps things interesting.
@Fengdesigns It's the brush settings (spacing & dynamics) that interest me more than the brush image itself.
@kikokoo The chalk brushes are in the Dry Media Brushes appendage in the Brush menu. The crystal brush that Feng uses to lay out the base colors and values is a Custom Brush he made which you could very easily make yourself. :) Just google Photoshop Custom Brushes and you'll find a bunch of tutorials on how to do it.
As Feng says in his next video though, the brush you use doesn't matter at all - you can paint anything with the basic Round brush in Photoshop if you want.
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
@Nahelus He is using pen pressure on flow and opacity he changes manually with 1-9 keys. At least what he said in the Photoshop & Wacom basics video.
I admire your skills. Thank you for all these lessons.
you can use a round soft brush with low opacity or use the dodge tool and set it to "midtones" with about 20% opacity , but i recommend the dodge tool so you can switch between brush and dodge by hitting "B" and "O" on the keyboard.
Amazing. I agree with Devo. It would be super helpful to see brush settings.
One way he might have done it is take that big hard brush with low opactiy and brighten certain areas a little. or did it with a overlay setting. There are many ways to do it just experiment!
great! i really like all you do! ty for your videos, its very helpfull for all of us who are trying to learn. thank you ALOT!
I very much appriciate how much effort you put into these videos keep up the good work :) !!
The last one looks so epic.
You can use hotkeys yeah, if you have a tablet they sometimes have buttons along the side. I have the Wacom Intuos 4 and it has 6 buttons along the side, I have brush, eyedropper etcetc so I just have to click the button to get that tool up ;)
Thanks for the videos. And in traditional we can zoom out too! And its totally recommended to get up, step back and look at your painting from a little distance.
thanks FZDSCHOOL for uploading videos to you tube.
this tutorial is awesome, i learn alot just from you videos. Thanks for posting this. Hope can get by the FZD some day.
I don't want to say that age doesn't mean anything. In terms of "can I still switch careers?" The answer is yes. Age doesn't matter. However, you do need to consider the industry as a whole.
There are a lot of young 20-somethings coming out of Art Center or FZD that have a lot of energy, talent, and can work around the clock. Someone of my age (mid-30s), I simply don't have the energy to keep up (nor do I even want to). So at the end, it's not about your age, but what you want out of life.
@DoomFist94 his brushes are perfect for me, which is why i looked them up and downloaded them.
Great, as always. Thank You, mate.
@sk1e
he allready replied to this request in many other episodes, he will not because it's not the tools of others that make you an good artist.
I give you an advice:
watch daarken's brush tutorial just type in the search field "daarken brush"
and start making your own brushes because while you are working at your own brush you will realize for where you can use it, and start getting ideas what to do with it, at least this is how it worked for me.
oh, btw. just wanted to ad that you totally saved my ass today, was stuck with this piece that has to be delivered tomorrow in the morning that just wasn't working for me. but what you said about treating your finished pieces as throw away sketches saved me =P, I made a new layer and repainted the whole thing in like 30 mins. I guess even professionals forget sometimes, anyway, thanks for the reminder.
Possibly colour dodge or a round brush with a screen layer
Thanks Imrooniel although i believe a lot of those shortcuts are the default shortcuts set by Photoshop, i still think it was a useful reminder. Many thanks.
thank you so much for uploading these videos... I'm learning soo much!!!
This was a damn good video!
I agree on everything you said.. except that i think the default RGB color box is easier than HSL sliders... In the box you can choose the saturation horizontally and the value vertically all in one box.. much much simple and more visual.
Thats a damn good brush too.. the block-in brush you have.
Well, dunno about Feng, but I myself use:
[5]+[0] (sets your brush at 50% opacity)
[1]+[0]+[0] (sets your brush at 100% opacity)
[alt] (colorpick while brush selected)
[b] (brush)
[e] (eraser)
[spacebar] (move around)
also setting your shortcut to flip canvas horizontally is usefull
otherones that can be useful:
[l] lasso tool
[crtl]+[z] I think you know what is it
[ctrl]+[shift]+[n] new layer
Thanks again for another very informative video!!! I want to dive right into a painting after watching your videos. You :)
10%talent 90%practice!
Can't wait till the next one!!!!
no, you can change the properties yourself in the brush section, like scatter and jitter etc... :)
thumbs up if you check youtube every morning waiting for these videos
If i was a King you'd be knighted in no time, cheers Feng!
@Nahelus No worries :)
Awesome as always!
Thanks so much, as always! Keep'm coming!
I have a question. So for every imaginative painting you do, how often would you do a referenced painting? you know as a way to refresh your eyes.
Guys just make a swatch box with many colors, and start painting something, think fast, and imagine what you want to paint, and with your mouse just start drawing and adding color to things,, and eventually you will have an image and all you have to do next is add the details, of course have good lightning and shadows an you will be able what he does, it's nothing from the other world, all you need to use is your imagination and creativity like he does, great vid by the way!
You did not understand my comment, of course you will use the right colors not just any cheap stuff, but in the beginning of making something you must first draw things and eventually add the right colors and shadows and lightning, just use your common sence. I tried it and its pretty simple, it really is and im a beginners, i just dont know why you guys make it seem like he some GOD, he does a good job but anyone can do it. Lol yes.
Ohh so that s how it is, okay let me make a digital painting, ima show you that a beginner can do oh gods so much yeah he may be an expert but anyone ca do that, im not trying to show off my self. As for "cheap stuff" i meant just painting whatever, and as for "whatever" i mean shit, and you know what i mean by that, and as for "use your common sence" ultimately it depends in the person needs, if he\she is painting a house in a jungle, and the person needs to add perspective + the details which is where the persons "common sence" can be applied as for the shadows and lightning, I'm new to this stuff and ive done pretty damm good, just using my imagination and common sence. Let me just finish my breakfast and i will make you a new digital painting and i will show you the steps i use. Brb, ill screen shot the stages.
You know what i'm going to digitally paint it whileeee i eat breakfast.

Here just add colors in the background, then create an object, i imagined a spaceship arriving to a city, near an ocean. it's the first step so of course it looks like this.
Well it happens because i follow my own path i don't follow common road used by people before me and after me. It's called talent :)
Just give me couple minutes and ill make you a beautifull ship arriving to some alien planet. :) Hates gonna hate
Magic.
Yesss! I've been thinking the same thing for a whole lot of his videos... my guess would be a low (15% max) opacity, 0-25% hardness, (possibly) saturation tool or brush. But id really like to know the answer myself.
Cool video, really inspiring!
@MrBreakingBones good advice! thank you
"If you're doing perspective homework, I think that's quite important."
.... I am working on my perspective homework while listening to these videos. Heh.
Since you mentioned it, are you testing the iPad on the field for painting purpouse? From what i've seen there aren't almost any good brush to work with it, and i think fingers can be good just to sketch out some values (i have an ipod touch and played a little with the autodesk app)
i was wondering in your chalk brush how is there a texture if it's default chalk brush on photoshop. i'm using cs5 and in the default brushes its just a solid stroke
23:06 nice 3d effect, but Im pretty sure it must have been done on layers
when using the photo reference are you color picking the photo? Or just picking the color based on what you see? I find it a bit difficult sometimes when grabbing the right color when using photo reference...depending on the photo I am referencing, some colors in certain light can be hard to pick correctly, do you have tips on that?
The last painting looks like the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. :)
Dude, next time you're in Tokyo hit me up and we can meet up for a beer. :D
hey Feng nice video again! i like the fact that the first two look like something drew with oil painting stuff can you please make a water scenery once(or did you already do?) or something organic almost touchable...
keep up the good work!
Great work, thanks for sharing this :)
What kind've wacom tablet is best? Is the cintiq really necessary or would an intuos4 be fine? Also, medium or large?
Coolness
at the end of the first painting, he went over some parts with what looks like a big hard round brush, to make parts lighter. anyone know how he did that?
Ur back, awezome!
Exactly...which one of the chalk brush is he using? I have photoshop CS5 and I see about 10 brushes using that tip. My Photoshop is in Italian so the translation may be different but I think is the one called in english "chalk 36" or something similar. am I wrong? I tryed using "chalk 36" but it covers too much the underlying paint beacuse is set to 100% opacity. Maybe He lowered the opacity...I don't know...
Hey feng how do you come up with characters mainly because I start to paint and my mind goes blank when I was younger I pumped out a ton of drawing on paper of basically characters made completely from my imagination but now my mind goes blank how do keep creativity going any advice
Thanks Feng!!!! :D
Thanks
Slightly alarming that your first painting looks exactly like down the road from me
the 2 initial paintings are made in a single layer?
Yea
THANKS!
@lvldsnr
yeah, it would be nice if they made a sort of pen
wich you can draw with on ipod and ipad aswell :\
Do you paint always with 100% Opacity and 100% Flow? Or do you usually change?
I would KILL for your talent :D
Where do I find that chalk brush he is using? I work with cs5 and the ones i found are too sharp.
What settings do you use on your brushes to enable you to do this?
Looks so easy, but it ends up being so hard, lol Still learning on my own.
@dionicpaint I'm only to lesson 20 or so. Guess I haven't gotten to that one yet. Intuos4 medium it is.
Is there anywhere you can finnd the brush you use to start off the 2nd painting with?
You said a crystal brush?
looks like dodge tool, set to mid-tones or highlights. not sure.
@DigitalizedArtist Ty man, im spanish and i dont understand all that he said.
ohh, great video though :)
Feng, your the best sir
yeah i was gonna say akasaka. these videos are boss
@Fengdesigns people would probably buy it :)
I've got a question. I've been doing some photoshop paintings on my own and I'm getting better and better at defining values but I work mainly in greytones. I don't have a clue how to pick colours and how they work and blend together. Anyone know a good way to practise this?
I guess he just picked the brush, samples a light color (blue or white) and started painting over with low oppacity (10/20 %).
hey feng i have a request for a video. ive been practicing concept art for sometime now and have tried painting all sorts of things, but i was just wondering how u would design something when the company hiring you has a very limited budget.
any tips or a vid on that would be great.THANKS FENG! :D
