This gave such strong Souls-like energy, especially with the character’s reactions. The scene that really stood out to me was the caution in entering the classic large open boss fight room. Love it!
I enjoyed this animation style, and the mood it set. The creatures were very interesting. I didn’t love the ending though - not because I didn’t appreciate the irony, but only because it was accomplished through words, rather than imagery. The mesmerizing part for me was having no dialogue. Loved that!
To all Independents, your time is now! Big Studio is dead. Disney is dead. The world thirsts for entertainment. This is your chance to put your mark in the Industry!
There's so much good attention to detail here, but I want to specifically call out the moment when she barely catches the stone with her fingertips and then readjusts her grip. A little moment that felt very real.
My new favorite movie. Beginning that draws you totally in, an epic middle that has you bringing your face closer to the screen and an ending that just felt right and not hastily done. 100 out of 10, will recommend.
A nice animated movie or game can be made from this short video. It was a very nice and successful production. I would like to thank everyone who contributed.
I can't imagine how much effort you put on this piece. The camera work and story is very compelling. I absolutely love the villain design.Amazing result! Congratulations!
That is a fantastic piece of work, the sequencing of the events was great and the battle was thrilling! Also, that guy in the throne was definitely what nightmares are made of... thanks guys
Many Unreal short films have had issues with lifeless eyes and expressionless faces. Not the case with this little beauty of a film. Wonderfully done, I want to see more of this world!
Very lovely in every respect! And thank you thank you for taking the time to use film's most underused superpower: the amazing narrative capabilities it uniquely possesses. So many of these short films we see every week are just a series of images and actions, operating in a vacuum...no story at all.
Thank you so much. I’ve begun my rescore and will share with you once finished. I’m loving spending such intimate time with your film, which continues to intrigue me.
I've been watching a few bits of animation on UA-cam, and thankfully, this video popped up onto my feed. Visuals, sound editing, characters, etc, all left me wanting more: Who were the two nasties who hired her? Why was SHE hired? The history of the object, etc. An absolute treat to watch on a Saturday morning. My only disappointment was that there is not enough of it! 😉👍🏼👏🏼. I'm now subscribed, so I look forward to seeing more of your content 😁
Horray! It's finally here! Such a beautifully animated, engaging story with so much care given to every detail. Amazing work Alex and team. This is so inspiring to me as an Unreal user. I can't wait to see what you do next!
Another creation with Unreal Engine. An amazing piece of tech so few know about. (And yet people still believe in UFO's. lol) Great short, hope to see more from these creators. All you have to do is imagine it today, and it can be created for others to enjoy. Thanks to Alex and Toft who created Forlorn. Great job. (There are even some Star Wars shorts made with Unreal Engine.) And I'm sure plenty of others I'm not even familiar with.
These kinds of shorts have been popping up on my feed, and they are nothing short of amazing! The amount of detail and storytelling squeezed into 2 short minutes is incredible. I know this question is coming from extreme naivety, but... How realistic is the idea that someone with ZERO experience could use Unreal Engine and create a short film just like this in a year? Are the tools all accessible? Could it be done from the comfort of your own home using a laptop? Can anyone point me in the right direction on where a total noob could pick this up as a hobby?
Thank you so much for your kind words, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it! Regarding your question, the short answer is: It depends. It depends on the scope of what you want to do, and how much CG experience you already have. If you're already familiar with 3D software and know the ins-and-outs of animation, modeling, rigging, lighting, texturing, FX, simulation, and camerawork, then picking up Unreal and using it to assemble a short film from scratch in a year is certainly possible, though it would still require an enormous amount of time and work. This particular short, for example, took me over three years to put together, and that's with a decade of prior experience working with Maya and Unreal professionally every single day. That being said, even if you are starting completely from zero, I would still absolutely encourage you to jump in and give it a go! These days, UE5 has so many tools to make a film that you don't really need to use any other software. It has metahumans, basic in-engine modeling and rigging, and a whole host of free assets that you can download from the marketplace that you can use for sets, props, and animation - more than enough to put something together, even if it's just for fun. And best of all, you can dig into these free assets and use them to teach yourself how a lot of the systems are utilized - from materials to FX to blueprints and beyond. My biggest advice for someone just starting would be to start small. Don't worry about making an entire short film from the get-go, you'll get there in time. Just focus on one shot, one character, one environment. Keep it short, just a few seconds - a gag, a punch, even just a character walking across the screen. And once you've done that, add to it, do something just a little big more advanced, and bit by bit you'll work up your knowledge until, eventually, you can basically create whatever you can envision. And if you have a story to tell, I wouldn't stop at just learning Unreal. I'd also encourage you to study film, cinematography, writing, story structure, you name it. Unfortunately I don't have any specific resources to recommend, as I learned all this stuff so long ago that it's now woefully out of date, but UA-cam is full of incredible creators and tutorials, and Epic also has a good amount of videos going over the basics of the software. I'm sure you shouldn't have any trouble starting out. And yes, you can absolutely make a film on just a laptop. Forlorn was made using UE4.25 and rendered on a GTX1080, which is comedically underpowered compared to what's out there today. Really, PC power isn't what's important, its how you use what you have. Anyway, I hope that was helpful. Thanks again for taking the time to watch my short, and I wish you all the best.
@@projectforlorn Thank you so much for such a comprehensive response! Your journey and your results speak for themselves and are inspiring all on their own... but your message to give it a shot is even more inspiring! A lot of useful information here, and I gotta be honest I wasn't expecting such a long and thoughtful response. Gonna dive in ASAP! Thanks again man
Yo, this is dope. A great epic little story that is well put together. Definitely some real quality work. You can tell there was a great deal of time and effort put into this. A truly enjoyable solid animation. Bravo!
This was absolutely amazing if it was a video game I would spend many hours of my life playing it. If this was a movie I'd buy it. I want more I totally need more that was absolutely amazing.
This is great. I especially like the creature designs. The blending of human and tree forms is quite unique.
This gave such strong Souls-like energy, especially with the character’s reactions. The scene that really stood out to me was the caution in entering the classic large open boss fight room. Love it!
It's literally called Forlorn.
The expressions on the character's face, so relatable. Excellent work!

I'm coming 🎉
There is no story, nothing new in Hollywood.
We still need Gigantic computers with... "Unreal" GPUs, SSD, RAM etc...
First step, make money by trading then start doing animation@@chouawarasteven
They'll be bought by Disney if successful.

That was outstanding! Excellent work on the special effects and sound track. Perfectly suited for making this a larger full feature film.
It's a crime this doesn't have more views. This kicked ass. Amazing job.
Extra comment for extra engagement. I dunno, might as well.
@fistoszeus2527 A LAD CAN DREAM
Feels like a cinematic trailer for a game. This was so cool
Finally, a short film that delivers on all counts. Nicely done.

Still absolutely fantastic.

God damn, very cool. Love the world and the characterization.
