    Been driving around for about a week in my new 5N. I have had the pleasure of top end BMW's, Mercedes, Porches and even a new Mini JCW countryman. The 5N is still the car I would want to drive. Whilst it's your right to say what ever you feel I think it's a little rude and demeaning to all the hard working engineers that created something new and interesting and something that seems to excite pretty much anyone that has driven it. To all those who want to get an opinion on this car.. .talk to the owners. They may not make videos on UA-cam for profit or fame but I am sure they will be happy to give you their opinion.

      Every car has a team of engineers, and I'm betting all of them consider themselves hard working on something new and interesting. So by your logic, you can never say anything negative about any car because it would be "rude and demeaning to all the hard working engineers that created something new and interesting...". As an automotive journalist it's not my job to make sure the engineers feel good about themselves. My job is to analyze a car to determine how well it achieves its goal and how much value it offers in trying achieving said goal. As for owner feedback, it's good for hearing about ownership experiences, but not so good for getting an unbiased overall opinion on the car. Spending tens of thousands of dollars on something tends to influence how you feel about it and humans aren't very good at admitting they are wrong. #confirmationbias

    Well done on this review.
    I'll park next to your N5 Ioniq at the next Cars and Coffee Irvine.
    Oh,
    In my N5, I consistently get a range count of 263-273 on a full charge.
    And without hyper-slow driving.
    Just 75-77 mph on the 91 from Corona to the O.C. driving it normally.
    But as you mentioned in the video, it's a loaner car for you.
    You haven't spent enough time with the car to get to know it.

      I’m in the PNW and in the winter it would occasionally be my mountain car. Desperate for info on winter range. I know it has a heat pump so that’s a great start

    Having noise is a good thing as it gives markers to the driver, they made the right choice

    • @KarlBrauerCars

      That’s a sales pitch. Talented drivers don’t need a “marker” to track their speed.

      @@KarlBrauerCars"why a sales pitch" ... This is mostly software, EV allows this feature and , why not ?

    My N arrives on Tuesday. I’m on my 3rd EV. Never got range concerns. I leave home with a full battery. Hyundai charges very quickly. It just requires you to plan ahead a bit. Works fine as a functional car

      Genuinely curious about how you plan to use it? Daily driver? Track days? Car rallies? The 221-mile range gives the Ioniq N a very tight leash. I can't imagine going on any long, exuberant drives, or using it at a track. Unless I house it at a track that has a level 3 charger. My closest track is Willow Springs, about 100 miles away. The logistics of using it there don't add up.

      @@KarlBrauerCars I had a launch edition of the Ioniq 5 for 3 years. Gone back to be replaced by the N. We also have a Honda e (joyful 100 mile range EV not sold in US). The N will be the long range car. The e for the city. I don’t really intend to track the N. But if I get the chance…. I’ve had a Golf VR6, two Subaru Impreza, Renault 5GT Turbo, Smart Brabus Roadster Coupe, 3 x Mini JCW. So I like the performance variety. But EVs are so much better than ICE cars today. I’m lucky to charge at home overnight cheaply or free via solar PV. Running costs so much better than petrol. I like the configurations of the N systems. But you can leave it in quiet eco mode too.

      @@juliandclarke I leased a Fiat 500e for 3 years (crazy low promotional $49 a month rate that I couldn't pass up). We put 23,000 miles on it in 3 years, and I was thrilled with how well it handled local Orange County duties. Saved about $100 a month in gas compared to our 2004 Chevrolet Malibu (that was still on call for longer trips). A pretty good balance against the $49 lease rate and slightly higher electric bill. If you can make an EV work for your lifestyle they are great.

    First off it seems you have the sound in “supersonic” which is the least desirable setting. Everyone who has driven this car with the sound mode in “ignition” has been blown away. Hyundai have created an EV for the car enthusiast and add to that, a technology with their simulated gear shift that all other manufacturers will have to emulate moving forward. You get the best of all worlds with this vehicle in my opinion. I suggest if you’re going to review a car, do your homework first! Hats off to Hyundai for creating this amazing vehicle.

    • @KarlBrauerCars
      @KarlBrauerCars  4 місяці тому

      I specifically tried "ignition" (you can see/hear it in the video). Fake sound is fake sound. Could be (and might as well be) ducks quacking in terms of how much it has to do with the car's operation. If other EV makers create simulated gear shifts it will be to satisfy the old guys who are stuck in the past. And everyone driving with that feature will be slower in both straight-line acceleration and lap times than the guys who simply accelerate as rapidly as possible (whether in a straight line or coming out of a turn). Ironic that the one advantage EVs have over gasoline cars (instant torque and rapid, uninterrupted acceleration, with no peakiness or gear shifts) is being compromised to pacify enthusiasts unable to embrace an electric car's biggest advantage.

    • @ancientsymbol
      @ancientsymbol Місяць тому

      @@KarlBrauerCars my understanding is that the paddle shifting is associated with changes in ‘rpm’ and torque values which is quite useful in terms of controlling the vehicle with the active drivetrain rather than the passive brakes. An example would be downshifting for a sharp turn to settle the vehicle down while rolling through the directional shift and then accelerating out of it. Smoother and more effective transitions for people who like to drive like they’re on a roller coaster. For people who want an Uber ride as a passenger they can just get a Tesla with FSD and sit back and relax. So the faux gear shifting does have value to enthusiasts, and the ‘ignition’ sound informs the driver as to where in the gear’s rpm bandwidth they are as they focus on keeping the sled on the asphalt. Make sense?

    • @KarlBrauerCars
      @KarlBrauerCars  Місяць тому

      @@ancientsymbol The 5 N has no gears or “RPM bandwidth”, An electric motor provides constant torque from 0 RPM. Using sounds and fake “shifts” to pretend there are gears is pure fantasy simulation for the mechanically illiterate. People like this want to pretend the car has things (like gears and a torque curve) because they can’t embrace one of the few advantages an EV has over ICE (instant torque). Type “Ioniq 5 N transmission” into Google and you’ll see even AI has it figured out in the results. “…using N e-shift can reduce the Ioniq 5 N's acceleration times. It also negates the main advantage of an EV, which is its immediate and uninterrupted torque”. So this is really the worst kind of engineering because it’s A: Fake, and B: Hurts performance. Make sense?

      I leased an EV for 3 years, and I think they are great…in the right circumstance. But they also suck in many circumstances. What I do hate is the idea that EVs are the end all, be all of personal transportation, and that everyone must immediately buy into them, in spite of their many flaws and limitations.
