in general people like calling things "fake" because it makes themselves feel more "real". that's why they don't have anything further to say after calling something "fake". they won't actually evaluate or look into anything to see merits or understand decisions (isn't it wild that enthusiasts are rating additional sensory feedback in a sports car as a negative just because the feedback isn't "real"?) they just need to convince themselves they're "real" people, not into "fake" stuff

I'm old enough (57) to remember enthusiasts in the very early 80s convinced that cool cars were over: the V8 was dying and they were convinced 'econoboxes' were plastic, souless, no-fun cars. That cohort was happy when the 5.0 Mustang proved them wrong, but a new generation of enthusiasts gravitated towards the hotted up versions of those econoboxes -- the GTI, the Civic Si. Then, in the 90s, a new gen didn't lust after Camaros and Mustangs -- they wanted turbo RX-7s, 300ZXs and Supras. Everytime something new comes along, one group of enthusiasts is convinced it's the end of the world: "you'll pry my big-block, four-speed, 4:11-geared musclecar from my cold, dead hands." But a different (often younger) group discovers car enthusiasm can come in all kinds of different styles. There will be fun EVs. Some folks will embrace them, others will not. I'm waiting for the day that they are a little cheaper and a little lighter, though a used Bolt with decent tires might be worth a look as values come down!
You don't even have to be old to realise that, you just have to be realistic. Same thing happened in 2000-2010 when manufacturers began to turbocharge every engine and people were crying that it isn't real fun anymore
Absolutely! I test drove the Ioniq 5N last week for a bit, and it was insanely fun. This car as a used car a few years from now when it gets cheaper, will be perfect for young people who wants a fast car. This is a great EV for a future boy racer. The endless options in the menus to set the car up to your specific liking and give it different personalities and driving characteristics, will be a dream for a younger generation used to set up cars to race in Playstation games. People can share online setups and hacks they have found and perhaps someone figures out how to update sounds and torque responses etc The possibilities are endless. And if Huyndai or other EV manufacturers make a smaller car with the same technology it would be even better. And I am sure it is coming.
The values do come dowm, Evs depreciate faster than ICE cars, why? They have inherent problems that are expensive to fix (battery) that get worse with age, any other component failures are also extremely expensive
@@Epicacactus Ha! I've never driven one, but when they were new, they had reviewers doing an autocross course against a GTI and the Bolt was a surprisingly decent handler. That doesn't mean it's fun, but if they were cheap enough (not yet!) it might be interesting to find out what a set of sticky tires might do.
This car has a faster Nürburgring time (only by a few seconds) than the Urus as well. Which means it is overall a faster car. That's wild to think about.
Elantra N FBO ran a track time of 1:29 (forget which track it was, not the Nurburgring) but I have three screenshots of the Elantra running faster times then super cars, vipers, Audis, teslas, jaguars, hell even Porsches. In 20 years, they've gone from producing terrible cars (still remember driving a Hyandai Accent, a rental, a truly rubbish car) to properly good cars and being innovative rather than trying to copy others, Hyundai has really gotten their stuff together. I think I would be happy to own an Ioniq 5 or 5 N. A colleague has got the regular 5 and is very happy with it, but I'd definitely to for the 5 N for a better driving feel, but the very limited range is still an issue of course.
Brilliant review. -And for the first time in the past 25 years, I've FINALLY heard the CORRECT way to pronounce "Hyundai" from a reviewer. THANK you, James!!!! That is EXACTLY how any VP of Hyundai (I was our local Cali company's service "face" to them for their micro-chip division, back then -to pronounce their own company's name.. even when they made crappy cars but good memory chips.) This is a great car... (Kinda expensive, but brilliant.) I love your reviews, and have for over a decade. Just so damn honest and real.
I don't know about Canadian, but the official American pronunciation is to make it sound like "Sunday." Hunday Sunday. The Korean pronunciation is a bit more nuanced. The "hyu" is pronounced by having the "h" go immediately into a dipthong with "yuh" (like in "yup") to make a fast "hyuh" sound. There is no English word that sounds like that. Every word starting with the letters "hy" is pronounced like "high" as in "hyper" or "hyena." Which is why years ago most Americans used to pronounce it "high yoon die". Hyundai USA apparently gave up trying to make the dipthong happen, so they simply eliminated the "y" sound and settled with the "u" in Sunday. The Korean "dai" part (despite its spelling) has the "e" sound in "depth", like "deh". It doesn't end with a "y" sound like "day" or "fly". So, the Korean pronunciation is "hyuhn deh". It's unfortunate that Hyundai spelled their name with "dai" as an ending, because Americans would associate that with a more Japanese pronunciation like Maibatsu, Daihatsu, etc. and they've been dealing with it ever since. IMHO, they should have just gone with something like "HMC" for Hyeondae Motor Company. Can you imagine if BMW had marketed globally with Bayerische Motoren Werke? Even Porsche had to come out with UA-cam videos on how to pronounce its name.
@@Instanturfeels smaller while driving. But nowhere near the veloster N lol. I was worried when I went from the K5 to the Ioniq5 but surprisingly felt natural.
No one buying a Urus is cross shopping some Hyundai. Cool the electric car one in the quarter mile, but that Lamborghini beats it in every other category by a mile. Build quality, looks, driving emotion, trackability, braking.

Yeah I like the fake engine sound in this application, it's adding engagement and fun to an EV. I don't want fake engine noises in any other application. I would totally own one of these. Edit: somewhat related I THINK there is a patent that Toyota? Filed that was very similar to this, but included a clutch pedal and 6 speed transmission, to emulate both in an electric car, including faking clutch slip and grip points of a real clutch disc on an EV.

I’m leasing an Ionic 5 as my commuter car and I absolutely love it. Solid, quiet, commanding on the road and it’s handsome. Hyundai nailed this segment for sure.
Watched enough reviews on this to say that if other manufacturers offered what Hyundai have done then I reckon more in brackets "petrol heads" would buy into the whole EV thing. What you have here is a genuine dual personality car beyond anything else, it can do the whole normal silent EV thing where it's driving experience is buttery smooth with single pedal driving etc and then with the press of a button become a full on Group B rally monster. I’m impressed that the “engine” (or should I say, N-gine) sounds follow the drivetrain pulsation when you pogo about the track. That’s a nice touch of realism.
Yes something that does not translate well over video and need to be tested on your own, the simulation is not just Throttle -> Speaker. It simulates sound for how the car behaves and if it is slipping or if the powerband is running out.
So much to love in this episode - James' horse story is a TH top 5 all time classic and the closing pill sequence was just too funny. Kudos to Hyundai for not only overdelivering on new ideas but also for making all the tech work and injecting fun into EV ownership. Fab car, fab episode. You guys never disappoint.
I really don't care about the ICE emulator, I even disabled the fake engine sound augmentation in my RS, but I *do* like the way Hyundai have prioritized driver involvement over safety when it comes to handling and letting you step over the limit. It's big, but they've finally decided to make a hot hatch EV.
I think the big thing with the engine sound in the I5N isn't that it has fake engine sound, but that Hyundai have done such a good job matching it with the fake gears (inc. downshift, lift-off, redline, etc)... fake engine noise without (manual) gears just sounds... fake. With the gears, and the physical sensations (as hyundai cut the motor on shift, etc), it works as a complete package.
@@logicalChimp Yeah... Which seems to have been well done, but it's also a little silly because it's limiting the torque by gear/RPM to emulate a gasoline engine, so you're giving up performance by turning on the emulation. I can see how it will work for some people, basically it's like playing a video game with options to mess around with, but if anyone thinks it will satiate the "purists" then they definitely don't understand the purists in the first place... It's not about any specific behavior of the sound and feel, it's how the physical mechanisms at work create that sound and feel that matter. You might could say that this is to a gasoline car as a video game like Dirt Rally with a full motion simulator is to actual rallying. That doesn't mean that "purists" won't ever like EVs, though, to sell EVs to driving purists you have to stop pretending the EV is something that it isn't, and instead focus on the EVs strengths... I.e., low center of mass, instant torque, extremely dynamic torque vectoring (*especially* in a hot hatch!)... You don't have a gas engine anymore, so ease up on the NVH and allow some sound into the cabin. If it's not direct drive and has gears anywhere, use straight cut gears since they sound epic as their pitch increases with speed. Electric race cars without all the sound deadening can actually sound really cool for the driver, so save some weight, remove noise insulation between the cabin and drivetrain, and let the driver hear the motors spool up as they accelerate. The main thing is going to be weight, though... A smaller hot hatch in the vein of this car but with more real drivetrain noise making it to the cabin, 1500-2000 lbs less weight, and a lower price would be much more interesting even without the ICE emulation gimmicks. I don't want to take my new girlfriend on all the same dates as my ex, that's just sad. I want to have new experiences.

The open window shoving air into my face and the heat coming through the sunroof, and of course, the G-force of a corner taken at err... totally legal speeds. I have spent all my life playing racing games and I will continue to do so, there's nothing special about a car that simulates all the things that a game does for me! @@Briggsian I agree with you.

This video actually got me emotional, it is purely amazing to see that there are still car makers who make vehicles with car guys in mind, and it actually looks so good, I’d love to see one in real life, cause here it looks like a hatchback with absolutely oversized wheels, and you guys keep bringing some of the highest quality videos on the car scene, I am absolutely one or your biggest fans for that, appreciate all the work you guys are doing, and when we feel like you’ve reached your highest point regarding quality, you keep surprising us further.
Keep on doing what you are doing, you guys are beyond great.
Yea. I can appreciate that aspect. But why would you want something fake? This car to me symbolizes the sad, fake future of "enthusiast" vehicles.
Internet: "EV's are boring tho"
Hyundai: "Hold my Kimchi"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Internet: Canadians don't even have their car brands.
Canadians: We have all the American Yank tank brands. We, Canada are a part of the American satellite states.
What a dumb comment.
I'm waiting for the day that they are a little cheaper and a little lighter, though a used Bolt with decent tires might be worth a look as values come down!
no engine? no thank you.
the left has stolen our dreams from us.
They are making Performance affordable ❤❤❤
The promise of EVs is finally coming true. WHEEEE!
Elantra N FBO ran a track time of 1:29 (forget which track it was, not the Nurburgring) but I have three screenshots of the Elantra running faster times then super cars, vipers, Audis, teslas, jaguars, hell even Porsches. If anyone wants the proof I can share em

The CORRECT KOREAN pronunciation is "hyon-dé" (2 syllables)
I thought I’d never say…my most anticipated car this year is a Hyundai. That’s coming from an Alfa Romeo owner. Wtf. What a vehicle.

Yeah once they got the Audi and BMW engineers and designers to come over, they definitely have improved.
The newer EV Hyundai's and the newer "n line" gas cars are the first Hyundai's I'd buy. They look like a lot of fun and remind me of when I bought my 09 civic SI... A nice reliable daily driver with a sporty fun touch, and easy to live with.

My daily is a 2023 i4 M50 and I’m pretty sure I want to get one of these when my lease is up next summer. Never thought I’d go from a BMW to a Hyundai, but this looks like so much fun.
Fair play to them for trying to make the car fun. The Fiat 500e abarth is just one constant drone. This genuinely seems fun to drive and use
I’m impressed that the “engine” (or should I say, N-gine) sounds follow the drivetrain pulsation when you pogo about the track. That’s a nice touch of realism.
That was probably his foot bounced on the throttle due to the pogo'ing - but it's definitely a nice touch.
@@matthewbrown7659 pretty much hit it on the head. I dont want to step on anyone's fun because there's no doubt that if i were to drive this i'd love it. But what makes me love driving is the reality of it. The machine basically telling me that if I screw up then I'll be lucky to walk away. The open window shoving air into my face and the heat coming through the sunroof, and of course, the G-force of a corner taken at err... totally legal speeds.
I have spent all my life playing racing games and I will continue to do so, there's nothing special about a car that simulates all the things that a game does for me!

I want one of these so bad, and ironically I kinda hope more car companies do something like this, because Hyundai has shown that it’s possible, so long as we ignore that weird Dodge EV that’s coming out
Yeah this is a very fun implementation of an EV.
Why ignore the dodge? That thing seems to be going for the exact same market as this.
@@alminzukic5740 yeah, but at least the Hyundai doesn’t sound like a dying cat
Toyota has been doing a similar thing, but they are going one step further and are adding a fake manual to an EV
@@royshavrick I used to be heavily against EV’s, and while I still am not for them, if I can get a manual in an EV with fake engine sounds…the future might be a-ok
Brilliant to see your enjoyment of “our” 5N…. Sending best wishes from South Korea (from where i can happily say that the 5N is my daily driver!)…
Keep up the great work!
Simon
Will we ever get the N Vision 74? That's a dream car
No. please make ICE
@@davidrubin2612 Avanté N …ICE already exists 👍😊😊
Me and James seeing the same video on reddit /r/all is so weird. Like seeing your teacher at the grocery store.
I agree with Thomas, it needs the sounds in all modes, but short of that and actual driving...this is my new favorite EV. If I were looking to buy an EV this would be top of my list to test.
This car single handedly made me regain all of my hope in the future :')
Are you telling me I could have my gear changes and engine sounds in my electric cars?
This does have the flaw of not being able to use it while in drift mode, but just imagine the future when batteries get lighter the things we could do with cars, this brings me hope that cars like my favorites, GR 86 and Porsche Cayman ARE POSSIBLE AS EVs. And that is the best news I have gotten in a long time.
