back in the '80s I rescued a pigeon from our back alley that couldn't stand or fly though I never figured out what was wrong with him (or her?)... a few weeks of TLC in our house seemed to do the trick and it eventually could move about just fine! it flew out, and would fly back in whenever a door or window was opened
sadly by that point my parents wouldn't let the bird stay with us anymore, and I guess it finally learned to stop trying to come visit. but I still think about my pigeon whenever I watch your channel

Hey, Xofer21! Thank you so very much for coming back to watch my video.. even though, there is a very long break between the times when I post anything :( I really appreciate your time!
Thank you for sharing the lovely, and yet sad story of yours. It warms my heart knowing that there are people like you out there who don't stay ambivalent to the injured trivial animal like pigeon! But it's sad for me to hear that eventually, your parents didn't let the bird to stay with you..... You said that it was back in the 80's.. long time ago, and yet, you still remember this pigeon.... isn't it fascinating how those small creatures can get into our hearts so fast and stay in our thoughts forever.

@@mylittlepigeon278 I have rescued many, many animals. They all require a lot of work and patience. My pigeon and my dove, are both very special. Their personalities are always amusing, and they are extremely loving birds. They follow me around the house, and always keep life interesting. How many old school cowboys do you know of, that would rather hang out with his birds, rather than go hang out at a bar? Lol

our pigeon has bonded to my teenage son & whenever my son goes into the bathroom, the bird just flies from my son's bed to the bathroom door & back again, until my son is finished & exits. but when my son leaves the house, the bird will deem one of the rest of us "good enough" to hang out with. 😹 with four people in the house, it's pretty rare for our bird to be alone for any length of time. he's the king of the household & we live to serve our feathery ruler. 😻

Thank you for putting this out so very well! 🥰 We have Sophie (The Pigeon) which is our rescue pigeon, she came from a VERY bad situation and a vet even thought she would never fully recover anymore (as in able to fly for example)...
She luckily did, with one of us spending A LOT of time (read: months!) of time with her, building trust, doing (VERY SLOWLY) exercises with her (to regain full use of her wings again etc), during this period it was almost a 24/7 task (aside from me sleeping of course) of spending time with her.
This dedication and attention caused her (unintentionally) to bond very strongly with me, and despite that we tried to see how she would do with another pigeon as 'real buddy/mate', she would not do well AT ALL (indeed very defensive, jealous and even aggression).
I sometimes also get comment's like "she needs a mate"... Well guess what? You are right: She already has a mate (in her eyes) and that's me. It works perfectly for her, I work from home, she literally spends her entire day with me and around me (even goes with me everywhere I go outside). Sure there are some (rare) instances she can't come along, and HAS to stay at home, but that's just fine and it doesn't bother her to much. She has a very nice (and large) 'cage' (we call it her room) to spend such (rare) occasions in, with enough to entertain herself, and I can keep an eye on her with an IP Camera.
All in all, i'm glad someone put the effort in making a video like this to explain it to people with 'the wrong idea'
    😄
Sophie has her own shorts on my channel where she shares her 'happy pigeon life and adventures', and other social media accounts (which I won't share here since it isn't meant as 'advertising' at all, and due to those 'channels' people around us are now also starting to see that she is really happy, enjoying all the things she does, and that she gets everything she deserves (and more) 😄
I will definitely link (or embed) this video on her own blog to explain/show to people that it's perfectly okay to have 'just' one pigeon. "Just" one pigeon, also "just" means that you are willing to devote to the pigeon as he/she would expect from a partner/mate, and if you are able to do so, then it is just fine 😄
Again, thank you very much for your elaborate and informative video (which is just PERFECT referral material)

I also need to add how glad I am to see you to be so extremely responsible with your pet and the ethics of keeping it. :) So often even well known, educated and well-meaning animal youtubers give unethical advice or have their pet(s) in borderline-unjust conditions. You set a very good example

I got two (male and female) because the breeder strong armed me into it by saying how well they do together and that it makes the birds so happy. I regret it every day. The problem is actually that they get along TOO well. They are very focused on each other and breeding/nesting. The problem for me is that I have lots of time to spend with a bird and don’t leave home much, so one bird would have been better for me. I wanted a pet I could be close to. My two are very low maintenance by being together, but they also want little to do with me which is not what I wanted. Just depends what you are looking for I guess, but I wish I wasn’t pressured into getting them both. Even if I got them a year apart it may have been better as they might have had better bonds with me from that time.

    • @zewt
      @zewt Рік тому +13

That is true. If you want a bird who gets closed to you all the time, 1 bird is perfect. I realised when I have 2, it's more difficult.

    • @marer_
      @marer_ 5 місяців тому +6

Makes sense that they are focused on each other. They are the same species after all and you're not. They can communicate to each other, build a nest together, etc. This is why you were strongly advised to get two pigeons, because it's whats best for the birds :) For example, it's even forbidden in some countries to keep budgies on their own for this exact reason

Hey, Beautifulwhitecat! Thank you very much for watching my video and for taking your time to write the comment. It's sad for me to hear that you had to give away your doves.... That's what I was talking about in my video when I said that if you will get a mated pair, you'll have other problems to deal with, .i.e. how to bond with them. But I'm glad you found a good home for your doves rather than giving them to a shelter! It's a very responsible and thoughtful thing to do!.... and I definitely understand you. We get pets to give them our love, in hope we'll get same love and loyalty back.... but, unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't work that way. :(

love love love this whole video
i currently have, umm, 6 pigeons (plus a feral who is in a crate recovering from a badly broken leg). there was definitely a shift in dynamics as each new pigeon arrived - they have all been found as babies and hand raised and have underlying issues that made releasing them impossible. they are great company and lots of fun. i say this even after the newest pigeon (9 weeks old) decided she was now sleeping in my bedroom a couple of nights ago and woke me up by jumping on my face the last 2 mornings.
and i still stress about leaving them when i go out of the house.

It's good that you are bringing up this topic. I have dozens of rescued pigeons at home and have observed that they form pairs with those they find sympathetic. You can't just take any two pigeons, put them together, and think it will be fine. I offer people the chance to temporarily take their pigeon, and with a bit of luck, it will pair up here. Then I return two pigeons to them. I wish every pigeon owner had such an opportunity. When they are in a true pair, it's a beautiful sight.

I've had a couple people ask if I was going to get a second pigeon. My bird actually goes outside with me on walks, and where I live we have ferals flying around. When ever one of them approaches my pigeon, she gets awkward and doesn't really know what to do. So, she comes back to me. She's more comfortable with people and dogs. When I go to work, she's learned the routine and doesn't freak out. I've caught her sleeping in bed with my dog (who is a 75 lb shepard/lab mix) when I get home. Or she's on her eggs. Pigeons are really shaped by their upbringing, and if you have a bird that was raised by or close to people, they really don't see themselves as something apart from us.

This is exactly how it went for our budgies. We'd spend everyday with our first one for years, him out the cage with us and toys, he developed bad hormonal issues and had to hump his toys everyday. Despite our constant attention and bonding with him, and making sure he had a good diet/vet visits said he was okay, and we always tried to keep his hormonal behaviour down in every way we could. When we got the second bird, his hormonal issues stopped. He doesn't hump any toys anymore, or the other budgie, he is more himself again :) however, like you said...they aren't that close, they bicker and refuse to share food and the new bird is young and fiesty, however they're bonded and will preen and feed eachother despite not being super chummy ❤

They don’t mind when I pet or tease them since they eat on my hand, on me, etc.but not too long. Lollll. If I only had one perhaps but they make each other edgy since they’re wild city birds and there’s at least 15 different who come visit me. They all have their own personality I’ll tell you. I even feed two very young ones with still a little squeaky cooing yet. I feed them peanuts!!! They adore peanuts and rice. I’m trying safflower seeds tomorrow. I have to use it all up..

This was so helpful, I currently have one pigeon that’s bonded to me and thought about getting another one to keep her company while im gone/working/etc, but think I’ll just stick to my one. She’s already jealous when I have people over so I can’t imagine how she would be with another bird 😂

    • @zewt
      @zewt Рік тому

Yeah, sticking with one could be a good idea. I am in your situation, thought my pigeon was lonely as my new job requires more hours. Now... my Sesame is trying to kill the new pigeon, I need to separate them all the time.

Toby and Bonnie are so adorable!
I fully agree with you. We tend to think on behalf of our animals and think they need company when in fact they are happy just being by themselves and that they have us all to themselves.
It’s the sense of guilt in us that when we are not home, they’re lonely. I believe they do, but on the other hand, they would get used to it. Perhaps?

I really loved your video and you are right about the animals being very jealous, it is both a suffering for them and for us. I am glad things got better. And this is a lesson for those people that hate pigeons snd say that they are a health danger. Thank you very much for showing that this is not truth.thank you for being kind.

Thank you for your lovely video. Ithink it is egotistical to have one animal.
Because people are going to work the whole day, spend time with friends in a cafe or whatever.
The dog or the pigeon at home this time is lonesome.
I had a pigeon (found as a young bird fallen from nest) at home for 5 month. And yes it was a amazing time.....But i also have a dog and we went together ! every day for a walk (Fly) in the wood. But when "Moly" became a "boy" he wanted to stay in the wood looking for a "girl".
But i miss him so much. And it´s so nice to watch you with your pigeons.

Started coming to this channel to do some research while I attempt to rescue an abandoned pigeon in my back yard. I've tried everything but he's too smart and healthy to fall for any of it. Called NPA and he's abandoned (black band, no numbers). I have his home all set up in my room and everything but I just can't get him somewhere safe. If this doesn't work out I think I will end up adopting but it breaks my heart to think of losing this guy.

I have a feral pigeon called Steve (I'm fairly sure he is male). Anyway he was injured by a predator (probably a cat) and his right eye was so badly damaged he cannot see out of it. Six months later he is fully healed although blind in the right eye. He loves being on his own and tells me off if I stroke him to much. I cannot let him go as he will almost certainly fall prey to another animal but he seems really happy living with me where he is fed and looked after. He hardly ever comes out of the bathroom and doesn't follow me around so I guess I have a pet pigeon for life without being followed lol.

This has been a really helpful video. I had two pigeons but one flew away, the remaining pigeon and I bonded deeply but I got her a mate because I am gone a lot. They hate each other and now they both hate ME. First pigeon has completely regressed and meets me with aggression constantly. The second pigeon simply hates me and is not warming up (many months of effort). They both are VERY unhappy. I was trying to decide if I rehome pigeon #2 or rehome both of them. I can't give her the time she needs (I have a full time job), so I will be rehoming both of them.

Pigeons are actually called Rock Doves as they are from the dove family.
if they have a line around the back of the neck, ringneck dove, will fill their crop bow their head and coo coo coooo and laugh alot
If they have no ring on their neck but spottage and some form of beige they are mourning doves, will emit a sound similar to mourning.

I want to get pigeons for a few reasons. One, I love having birds when I was younger and I did have pigeons back then so it’s a nostalgia thing for me. Two, my neighbors have pigeons and I want pigeons too. And three, it’s to take care of birds that are hold a special place in my heart, separate from reason 1.

I got a rescue last year and so far he's my only one. It's been hard, mostly because he's scared of hands and I've been failing to properly desensitize him I think. It's been in the back of my mind that if I can't get him bonded then I'll eventually have to get a second pigeon, but I'm giving it some time still working on getting that bond.

I rescued a homing pigeon 4 years ago , I had a 10 year old cat that got along with any animals but cats , luckily they got along but both never got more than a couple of inches to each other , cat in my lap pigeon on my shoulder, unfortunately my 15 year old cat passed away a month ago and she would look for him , they kept each other company when I had to go to work ! She seems ok now

ive wanted a pigeon for an incredibly long time, and recently thats just increased by the TON because i got to pet one in person (a friend of mine owns two!), now, i usually stay cooped up at home all the time, but i have school, which is several grueling hours being bored for both me AND the potential pigeon. id be fine with getting two so they dont get sickly depressed, but im also nervous about them potentially being TOO focused on EACHOTHER, or.. simply hating eachother and then i have double the poop cleanup to take care of. i know the easy solution is just,, "dont get a pigeon then!" but they really do seem like a perfect match for me, and the first option if i ever was allowed to get a small winged animal.

definitely appreciate how informative, these little big complications and decisions, consequences, mechanics.
that are so real, and not how you/i thought, but we got to deal with it now the situation turned the way it did.
the comments are also useful with their different experiences.
a key word/mechanic i just got from another video is to be careful with imprinting.
you're first only i guess of course, it imprinted as you're mate and then the competitive unclear relationship with another burb. one "should"have let the birds pair up and relate like that to the owner,
But i love the video (s openness/honesty/good faith/whatever, perfect or whatever) the situation is something and we'll figure it out. .. with lots of experience and love (and pain)

I think this applies to other bird species too. My cockatiel has had two cage-mates. The first one lived with her for four years and died the day before I brought her home. She did not care at all. I bought her another companion bird years later, thinking she was lonely while I was in school. The bird also died in front of her. Again, she did not care. She's a human-loving bird lol.

I'm a long-term pigeon guy. It could be that Toby is a boy and bonded with you; and your Frill is also a male...hence the competition. I feel like if you had two females, or a male and a female, they would mate and lay eggs. But I certainly could be wrong... again.... I appreciate your videos! I am hand-raising a German Owl for my grand-daughter, and I have really enjoyed your sharing your pigeon-pet experience! Thanks!

I rescued a pigeon. Still had its yellow feathers and had to be hand fed. I’ve had it for 7 months now. His or her name is Omelet. Daughter named him or her. I released it one day thinking it would not come back. It left so quickly. I was sad. Many hours later I find it on the lip of my garage. He or she lets me pick her up only when she wants to be picked up. 😆 Would hang out on my shoulder when I’m working on something outside. Now it’s become a normal routine. I force her to explore the outside world by releasing her around 6a and when I open my garage around 10a she flies right in to drink her water and eat her seeds.
