It certainly applies for other birds, but not for pigeons and doves.
It's actually not sweet and birds especially pigeons aren't like cats and dogs that you can keep without pairing them. It affects them mentally. That's why I always tell people to keep a pair of birds. His natural instincts for mating and hatching eggs is kicking in. I don't get why humans take away that right from them.

FINALLY! I've rescued and hand raised baby pigeons for decades. Pigeons make awesome, loyal and loving pets. If you watch them in flocks, the guys are ALWAYS prancing for the ladies. The actually do bond as pairs, and they are heartbreakingly dedicated. All those grunting noises he makes? He's courting you. Thank you for loving a pigeon.

I really like that she knows that the bird can't love her like she loves him, but that he loves in his own way. I wish more people got that about animals. We love them with all of our hearts, and they "love" us as much as they're capable of doing it.

That is the most beautiful pigeon I have ever seen. I am awestruck. I couldn't take my eyes off of that beautiful bird, he looks so regal with that crown on his head or high collar and his beautiful white feathers. I am seriously in love with that bird now 😍. Pair bonding with a pigeon is a very special thing. I was lucky enough to have that experience once. Barry would wait outside the bedroom door in the morning for my wife to open it, then would fly in and wake me up. He'd also bring me things (he wanted us to make a nest), and loved his neck scratches. He was a racer that we rescued ourselves. When he died a couple of years ago, we were all heartbroken by it.
After a few months, we decided to adopt another pigeon - and we also had her (Payton) shipped from Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue (although back then they were called "Chicago Pigeon Pets.") She's been a great pidge, and has even made peace with Pippin, our local feral pigeon that we rescued after he was struck by a hawk last year. She considers us flock (and Pippin is getting there), but neither have any desire to pair-bond a human. That doesn't mean we don't still love them both just as much though.
Speaking of which, it's time to let them out to get their flaps in for a few hours.
Life with critters - it is often sweet, sometimes sad, and it is a great treasure in life when that love is shared. 😸 I have cats now. As a child had a couple dogs and parakeets. Some of the chemicals used in model boats, plastic models, and model trains, are best used without birds around, so there are unlikely to be birds in my adulthood.

@@scribblecloud No, they get let out of their cages - not out of the house. We 'pigeon proof' the living room and let them wander around for ~6+ hours per day.
Redomesticated ferals are not nature-friendly. They lose the instincts necessary to avoid predators and find (safe) food.

By the way, did you notice I said, "all. the. time."? 24/7/365. It actually aggravates my husband sometimes. I either don't notice or adore it but I can watch TV with ten kids running around screaming without noticing them too. Sooo ... there's that. lol.
