I’ve been overweight my entire life starting as an infant. My first memory of “weight” was third grade when I was 165 pounds. After that the lowest I ever got was 175 in Army basic training and the highest was 235. I’ve been on just about every diet out there over the years. I started Keto in July and I am at 160 now. In 59 years I have never seen that number on a scale. I only wish I had been able to start it 50 years ago.

Low carb diet doesn’t make anyone any money. But take walk around a grocery store and it’s low fat this and low fat that. They put a little red heart on the beautifully done packaging to draw you into the big lie. I’ve been low carb for years and lovin life. Thanks Doc!

I've done Mediterranean, Prism, Vegetarian, Weight Watchers and have been on Keto for 3 years (am on it for LIFE!)...it's done what none of the others did.
I can't sing the praises of Keto enough! I also do Intermittent Fasting (no eating 20 hours, two meals in four hour period).
    • Reversed Diabetes, off meds
    • Reversed Fuchs Dystrophy of the Corneas (night blindness)
    • Triglycerides went from 276 to 93 (normal) in four months
    • Healed Cirrhosis of the liver
    • HDL 50s went to upper 90s
    • Lowered Cholesterol, got off statins
    • Neuropathy burning, gone
    • Food Allergies 38+ years, gone
    • IBS gone
    • High WBC & Calcium (years) gone
    • Kidney Damage Reversed
    • Asthma, gone
    • Cirrhosis of the liver, gone.
    • Had been maxed out on Diabetic meds 11 years, got off of them!
    • I’d stake my life on Keto! It can reverse dementia and help prevent cancer. Had tried Weight Watchers, Prism, Mediterranean, and Vegetarian, none did all this for me.
    • Oh and I lost 75 lbs and kept it off and have more energy than ever!

I've lost a fair amount weight on the low fat regimen a few times over the years, but always wound up so hungry I gained the weight right back. This time, on a low carb diet, I've lost the most (110 in a year), and feel like I will keep it off. The first six months I fasted (no food at all) on Saturdays. I eat lots of fatty meat and eggs, and eat 2 meals in a 4-6 hour window. I, too, wish I had discovered all this good information 50 years ago. It's way more fun, and way more effective, to eat a lot of delicious fat. I don't even miss the carby things like bread, pasta and rice.

I lived around 20 to 25 years following the low fat/low calorie diet. In the end all it did for me was make me sick. Skin issues/excess oiliness/acne. Digestive issues/indigestion/diarrhea/constipation/bloating/gas. Metabolic issues weight gain/pre-diabetes. Fertility issues irregular and painful cycles/ uterine fibroid tumors/ infertility/total hysterectomy. Brain issue sudden black out seizure. Hormonal imbalance.
I changed to low carb/carnivore: all issues gone with the exception of the hysterectomy. All issues GONE! Plus I lost 43 pounds and have managed to keep it off with the exception of adding muscle mass weight.
I feel like the low fat/calorie diet is not well suited for the majority of people/population. It assumes a healthy state/condition. It won't make people healthier if they have health issues.

Since going low carb 15 months ago after a diabetes diagnosis I have been observing people's body shapes and particularly their lower abdomen area. The other day I saw two ladies walking towards me who were of a similar stature to myself and they were both overweight and I thought wow, that's what I used to look like. I then checked myself out in the shop window as I walked past. I've started wearing more fitted clothing instead of the "cover it up" tops I used to wear. And I used to hate seeing myself in the reflection. But it's not about looks. I feel so much better than I used to, going from 80kg to 64kg, a 20% reduction without even trying. I'm only 5 foot tall. I've gone from 44" waist to 38". I'm still classed as overweight but I'm not stressing about it. If it happens, it happens. I am much healthier now than I have been for about 35 years. 65 yo F.

Right there with you on how tribal nutrition choices can be. When people ask or comment, I usually say people have to figure out what works for them and low-carb/keto is the only thing I’ve found that works for me.
I’ve been overweight most of my life and have tried low fat, calorie counting, vegetarian, Abs Diet, IF, Mediterranean, and Weight Watchers in addition to low-carb/keto. The only times I’ve been able to really lose weight (outside of the initial 10lbs) and keep it off is when I’ve followed a low-carb diet. I just know what works for me and will need something more significant than an associative study to change my mind.

It's important to define low fat / High fat in terms of % per total calories consumed. Some studies claim they've been "Low fat" yet still had a 20-30% of Fat which isn't low fat at all. Low-fat diets for weight loss are super effective long-term when it comes to weight loss, and weight maintenance yet they do need to be low fat which is 10-15% of calories from fat. I think instead of throwing terms around such as "high protein" High Fat" "Low Fat" we should be more specific to not confuse ppl further

What we are is 50% genetic, 25% unknown factors, and 25% environmental. The environmental part is what we can affect. Oh, "environmental" includes diet, activity, psychological stability, and the earth.

We need to change the Eatwell guide as it’s still spouted by the NHS for diabetic mainly type 2 when this is what’s caused their problems. More rice, pasta more high sugars more drugs which they want you on sadly.
I can’t do low fat I’d be starving all the time been there done that
Low carb not keto I felt full all the time.
Also processed meats etc is bad but they lump in quality red meat from the butcher in with that and try and frighten us with bowel cancer.
Plus nurses and some doctors need retraining as some can be damn patronising with my health.

I'm in Australia, a 65 yo F. I started low carb 15 months ago after being diagnosed with diabetes which is now in remission. All my blood test results are great (except my LDL went up - I know that isn't a problem) and my recent CAC is zero. I've lost 20% of my weight without trying. Cardiologist, head of a major hospital, recommended (not suggested) low dose statin. I said no, and told him that even if my CAC was NOT zero, that I would not take a statin. And recently when I saw my GP and she wanted me on a statin, I said that statins worsen/cause diabetes and her response was oh there are new studies coming out which have found that it helps diabetes. Work that one out!

@@jobrown8146 Thanks for your reply. I did exactly the same - Blood work was terrible 18 months ago, then went on Keto - lost 25Kgs without even trying and my recent bloodwork showed that I'd reversed pre-diabetes and fatty Liver disease. However, like yourself, my LDL had increased but my HDL had doubled and triglycerides had reduced. I'm not concerned about this and I certainly won't be taking any statins - In fact, I'm 65 and completely free of medications (for now lol). And most of all, I feel great.

@@papaeph6134 Wow you've done really well. Great work. It's a fantastic feeling isn't it? And once I worked it out it wasn't that hard to do. The changes happened so quickly that it was all the encouragement that I needed to stick with it. The only prescription medication that I take now is a very small dose of BP drug. It had been 10mg and after only 2 months low carb I halved it to 5mg (I was incredibly fatigued but it wasn't from diet change and it was different to the not having slept enough, just really drained), and then a few months later reduced it to 2.5mg. I did stop it altogether over winter and because it was cold I wasn't testing it but when the doctor checked it in October 2022 it was a bit high, and it didn't seem to white coat syndrome so I went back on the 2.5mg. I'm still overweight and do seem to be yoyoing between 63-64kg. But my main goal is to stay non-diabetic and be able to continue eating a low carb diet and enjoy it. If I happen to lose more weight that will be good, but if I don't, it's no big deal. But I don't want it to increase. I've noticed a big difference in my back issues (bulging disc and arthritis) and my knees (2 meniscus tears in L knee and arthritis probably in both). And during winter 2022 my fingers didn't ache like they had the winter before. Oh yes, and my chin hairs are getting finer which my low carb doctor said is because I'm more insulin sensitive, even though he said my fasting insulin is a bit higher than he would like it to be. I don't have any comparison test to compare and will get it redone in 6 months so hopefully there will be some improvement there. Wishing you all the best.

I, like yourself, would love to lose a further 20lbs but having already lost over 60lbs it's no big deal (as long as I don't start gaining any weight). The main thing is to improve health, especially diabetes, weight loss is just a fantastic by-product along with mental clarity. Keep it up Jo 'coz you too have done really well!

I'm 63 next month and have been on a diet nearly every year for 50 years. ALL DIETS WORK because they are all means of gaining a calorie deficit. That is not really the argument though. It is about sustainability. Most of my diets have ended for the following reasons; boredom; obsession with food because of planning and counting; growing hunger; growing tiredness. Calorie restriction alone is in error since it considers half a cabbage to be equivalent to a spoonful of sugar. It says that calories in against calories out is the only valid measure such that 100g of beef steak is the same value as 110g of ice cream. Nothing could be further from the truth. It also assumes that eating 200 calories 10 times a day is the same as sitting down to a well thought out meal of 2000 calories once per day. It ignores the importance of hunger and satiation, and ignores the massive benefits of fasting in its role to allow the body to heal and to illicite accelerated energy output. There is only ONE dieting method I can recommend ( and I have tried many), and there is only one which has proven sustainable such that after one year I have kept off every pound that I lost. And that is Low Carb with fasting. Low fat is a recipe for eventual failure. There are essential fatty acids; there are no essential carbs.
