2017 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Review and Road Test In 4K UHD

- If you're looking for fun in a small package you have few options in America today and if you want a coupe then you have even less. The CR-Z is gone, Ford may or may not bring the Fiesta back to the USA, Mazda stuck a fork in the Mazda2, Scion closed and took the TC with it and MINI's latest wares are in a price category all to their own. Speaking of a category of one, the Veloster is essentially the only four-seat coupe in America under $20,000. But is it any good? We try to answer that and more in this video.

Just got a 2017 Veloster Turbo loaded last week....absolutely love it....Once I figure out all the gadgets, I will be very happy! Fun to drive ! No longer afraid to merge on the expressway !
How’s is holding up ? Just bought a 2016 r spec turbo
you are a great reviewer. No bs straight to the point. you got yourself a new subscriber. keep up the good work sir
2:25 in a RHD veloster the door does move. It's on the passenger side of the vehicle in every country it's sold. So RHD velo, back door is on the left. LHD it'll be on the right
I have 2017 Veloster US Version and it's fun to drive and not boring inside.... I love it no regrets for buying this unique style of car....
Wow.. I feel like I were rode this car by myself. Very very complete report at every detail, thanks a lot!!!
Great review. Perhaps the ONLY Veloster review on UA-cam I've seen that actually checks everything out, and not just how the car drives. Finding out about boot size, rear leg room, etc. are also very important. Other reviewers just talk and talk and talk about nonsense. It's so annoying.
Thanks for the video Alex. Best, most in-depth review of the Veloster yet.
This is a really clean review! Definitely subbed!
1 of the most thorough reviews I've seen on the veloster👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow! Now this guy reviews automobiles! New fan!
Wow, super informative! Thank you so much for this in-depth analysis and comparison video.
Best Review I've seen to date Alex...Thank You...
I have a 2013 model...almost identical if it weren't for some minor differences. Love mine. I'm currently waiting for the Veloster N
I have a 2016, and trading mine in as soon as they are available.
Alex, great review. Helped me make my final decision on purchasing a 2016 Veloster Turbo! Great car and fun to drive. Thanks for the thorough review.
The most unique 4 door coupe out in the market hands down. The turbo version styling is much better to look at than the base model. Based on my experiences with this car [1.6t 6m]. I got faster 0-60 and higher MPG. It's a fun car to drive and practically make sense for it's compact size and not have to get a CUV. The look and feel is much sportier than the GTI. Inside fit and finish is solid and does not feel cheap. Hyundai should continue this line up and just refine it.
It doesn't have to be the fastest or the biggest. Just make it more refine and keep the price at bay. Quality over quantity. That is my impression of this car.
btw. If you are wondering. I am 5'10 with average build and do fit comfortly in the back seat.
P sure it’s 3 doors
Exceptional reviews! Way better than the average...really like the comparisons.
Great review as always. Considering that my favorite car was an old Honda CRX Si, I have to say that I love the rear hatch of the Veloster! It reminds me a lot of my old CRX! In a good way.
best review of this car i've seen so far. Thanks
Great review
Amazing video, about to pick up mine soon
Thanks for the very detailed review. Excellent video 👍
It is an appealing and sexy car, I have to admit. Also, the orange handle on the passenger side is meant to be grabbed onto during spirited driving so that the passenger doesn't slide around.
Had a 2013 Veloster turbo manual. Very reliable and fun to drive on the highway. Had mediocre ride quality and those low profile tires look awesome but if u drive in Baltimore, they will get scratched up and bent. I was paranoid all the time. Considering I got this for 22000 out the door, it's crazy value. Definitely not a sports car tho. It's more like a fun to drive, quick alternative to ur everyday civics and corollas. The rear 3rd door is useful, but living with it for 4 years makes me want a 4 door hatch next time. (get the new elantra gt)
Got a RHD here in Australia and the 3rd door is definitely on the other side of my car...
Are they a good car?
@@oneredball1 I have been extremely happy with it going on 8 years now.
Such a great review. You even brought up the model of the car that I was also looking at buying! How did you know?!
I couldn't be happier with my 16 VT with the DCT transmission. It can easily be modded to be a 5.5 to 6 second car.
I'm just lower than 5.5. Love mine as well.
What mods are you running on yours?
Hey Alex. hope you'll do an updated 2019 Veloster video!
Hey Alex. Great review. If this car was not on your channel, I would not even watch a review about it. Just being honest.
I do love how Hyundai made a small car look so great. I never think of this as an eco box like the Ford fiesta which has the most metal I've seen on the rear fender to hatch ratio creating the illusions of a car on stilts. The Fiesta looks like an eco box and I would not buy, where as the VT has proper styling and proportions. Looks great
Thanks great video. I have a 2017 7speed DCT myself (before even watchin this video) lol
Hatched back for the win
In my Base Manual Veloster I have averaged 45 mpg
It is so weird that Americans count the trunk lid as a door. Here in Brazil we call the Veloster a 3-door car.
Great review as always!
It's only Americans: it's standard in Europe, too, to call the trunk lid "door" as long as they're large enough - e.g. a sedan is a 4-door-car, a hatchback is a 3-
or 5-door-car.
Typical American logic tbh, everything is dumbed down ahaha
It has to do with the stigma that hatchbacks were saddled with in the U.S. For many years hatchbacks were the cheapest of the cheap. The Detroit 3 made them as compliance cars to meet CAFE requirements and sold them at a loss, souring the market even for better built imports. The result of that was that the hatches available were generally super-cheap pieces of junk. Driving one meant that you couldn't afford a better car. When hatches started coming back into the market they adopted the European practice of counting them as doors, which avoided the stigmatized word "hatchback".
if it didn't open, we would call it a window. I guess that is dumb, too.
Americans aren't the only people who call them "doors". The definition of a "door" is a barrier that blocks off interior entry/access to buildings, vehicles, etc. That can include lids and hatches. I mean, does a Delorean not have "doors"? What about submarines? They may not be traditional "doors" that swing to the side, but they do, in fact, have "doors" of some sort. And by definition, this isn't a "trunk". A "trunk" is a cargo area that's separate from the interior space.
I have a Kia Soul as a daily driver, and having owned the Honda CR-Z & Mazda3 hatchback, I've always liked the Veloster Turbo. I've only test driven it once before, along with the Nissan Juke, and thought they were cool handling vehicles. These subcompact hatchs/crossovers are just right for jungles of San Francisco/Oakland. I see folks both young & old in them. I ended up with a Kia Soul for more space & higher ride height.
As a fan of 4 door hatchbacks, I always just wrote this car off as a gimmick but this really surprised me. Hmmmm, I'm glad I watched it
The Veloster has always been a strange car to me but I can see its appeal to some people. I drive a '17 Ford Focus ST which is quite a bit more in its starting price but so much more fun to drive and way more powerful.
Vou tirar onda de Veloster , esse carro é massa muito bonito .(Brasil 2019)
Alex! 😁
I am buying one today !!!
Nice looking car
I'm surprised the Fiesta might go away. I see a lot of them on the road.
They (Ford) knows that fewer people would buy a car if it has only 3 cylinders regardless of the power output - folks here in the US would believe it's another Geo Metro ;-)
I love my 2016 Veloster R-Spec. There are just two comments I'd like to make, one of which I suspect you will disagree with. IMHO, this car is a three door, with a hatch. The hatch is not a door. Secondly, 0-60 time is compromised a bit by the fact that you must shift to 3rd before your reach 60 mph.
Really a great vehicle for the price. Would take this all day over a Corolla, Mazda 3, Focus, ECT. Dealers are selling these fully loaded for $16k. Hats a steal
The turbo? whereabouts are you located - Hyundai dealers do deal here in Ohio but that would be "win" if it's for the VT - if one could get a loaded for around $20k you might be able to overlook the fact that it doesn't have an independent rear suspension....
Mind as well go for the 2018 Elantra GT ☺
does alex review an abarth 500?
I'm pretty sure the 0-60 turbo manual is 6.8, not 7 sec plus
You are wrong about the right hand drive cars having the same 3 door configuration as the USA. Check out the Australian Hyundai's and you will see the Drivers door stands alone and the passenger doors have a front and rear.
You do such an awesome job.....you make it easy to compare make to make because you stick with your pattern as you go through them. What do you think is better out of this Valoster and a Buick Encore ? ......for my 50 year old girlfriend.....
Do you have to pay for navigation in the 2013 model
Wait, no comparison to Honda Fit? What am I missing?
Putting aside practicality differences, would you choose the Veloster Turbo, Elantra Sport, or maybe the upcoming Elantra GT Sport?
Chao Hong Li Audi RS3 Performance Black Edition
Unless you are for some reason enamored with the Veloster's look, Elantra GT Sport. No question.
Chao Hong Li Elantra Sport is better. They did nice updates to the Sport while the VT has not been updated.
Blake Swan
Um
Veloster n?
In Australia which is a right hand drive country, the rear door is on the left side of the car, which is sensible from the point of view of safety. Rear passengers enter and alight on the herb side of the car, not out into the traffic as suggested by this reviewer.
Alex, do the Tesla Model 3 review
I'm 5'8" and already feel claustrophobic in the back. I can't imagine how Alex feels.
I'm 6ft and I feel just fine. maybe its you
Dude. You own the car. Drive or ride in the front!
3 side doors? wow great design. looks like a coup on one side and a sedan on the other. genius!!!! BARF
If the rear suspension is a letdown, how does it get an A for handling?
Because a non-independent suspension in a subcompact is pretty normal and it does handle better than just about every other subcompact car.
Martin Espinoza see fiesta ST. Torsion beam rear suspension
Hate the open diff needs LSD and the chassis is very old, which is from the Accent otherwise it is still a nice car
Hopefully, with Hyundai and Kia apparently making a performance line soon, they'll give us a Hyundai Veloster that competes with the VW GTI and maybe one that competes with the Golf-R with AWD.
Rumor is the 2019 Veloster Turbo will get that "N" performance badge and will receive a facelift! So fingers crossed for that.
Devon Beckwith What the N Performance mean?
Devon Beckwith Hopefully, it actually gives it more power and torque.
Jeff Eppenger GTI or Golf-R competitor?
MetalAndMotorsGuy506 They hired the guy behind the BMW M cars to develop a new performance line for them. That line will be known as the "N" line. Both Hyundai and Genesis vehicles are likely to get the treatment.
DO THE MERCEDES GLS PLEAAASSSSEEE!!!!!
I like the Color. (That dark orange). But thats about it....
If the US only gets the veloster N instead of the GT sport N, that will be a disappointment.
Wish this was in India!
What happened to the game that use to be on the dash board
Pretty sure he implied it was diesel. Also the door DOES switch sides, no matter where it is sold, the driver ALWAYS gets the big door.
I don't see this model on 2018 with the arrival of the Elantra GT (i30 in Europe)
Marco Cordero it is taking a break for the 2018 model year then coming back completely redesigned in 2019
I don't see this car being available next year, in all honesty. This car competed with the Scion TC and Honda CRZ which are now gone and this may be next. The Elantra Sport and GT Sport hit the nail on the head for anyone who's gonna buy a sport compact. Hyundai made the Sonata nicer to take the Azera's place, so I can see the Elantra filling in the gap of the Veloster. Same thing happened with the Veracruz which the Santa Fe has now taken its place.
Moar Desu the second generation is already in development. There's also spyshots on the internet
Kind of slow 0-60 for 200hp and amount of torque and light weight. I would expect around 6 sec.
The car can definitely go closer to 6.5-ish with proper clutch/throttle control and tires. He's likely testing the car on the garbage stock Kumho tires, and if you leave traction control on it cuts the 0-60 a bit.
Roman O what does a Fiesta ST do 0-60mph? This is not a gti competitor
7.3 vs 6.5 with manual transmission. Yes, fiesta ST is faster. So what is your point?
with the same motor the soul is quicker ... by 0.1 sec
Fiesta ST is not nearly as nice inside. Tenths of a second do nothing for me.
This is my dads favorite car made by Hyindai
I'd get the toyota iM, you get space and its new looks and its cheaper to repair or hold on your insurance.
I’m having trouble choosing between this and the scion tc. Anyone have any suggestions?
If you want reliable, go with scion. If you want more power and better handling, get the VT
@@hypr1 thank you
@@Jayy-xx6gl No problem. Since you wrote that 3 months ago, did you end up buying a tc or veloster?
@@hypr1 neither yet I’m still saving up😭
Hyundai should stop beating around the bush and make a Hyundai i30 with a 2.0 T-gdi 250+ bhp with AWD for a decent price for the common driver. I don't need red stitching, sport seats, sport suspension and all the bling-bling. I just want a car that can go when I press the gas pedal uphill with 4 people plus luggage and that won't let me stranded when we get 1ft of snow in a couple of hours during the winter.
The car which you describe would be the WRX. Even if Hyundai could offer something that is basically the same for even $4k less money people would almost always choose the Subaru - Hyundai has struggled with the "more for less" in the luxury segment for years with Genesis - most just think of the brand (Kia as well) as inexpensive cars that look good (these days thanks to their chief) and last a while but are just okay in most areas. I'd say the reason why the Veloster is still around is due to the fact that the competition has gotten out of this segment not because the Veloster is that much better.
Mistake with the dimensions? It is 11 in longer than a Fit.
Mgoblagulkablong honda fit is 160 inch. this is 166 inch. so 6 inch longer.
Alex, You have made an excellent comparison between the Veloster and C-HR . The first time I saw the C-HR in person the similarities with the Hyundai were striking but they both have the same drawbacks They are far too over-styled and they are both ergonomic disasters. Some day they may add power to the C-HR to even up the acceleration numbers but you will NEVER be able to
successfully shoulder check and that is simply inexcusable in anything less than a super-car.
I see no psi gague.
The car sounds noisy. We can even pick on the background. I wonder if there will be a second generation coming soon? This one is lacking, one generation behind. Older steering wheel, older screens, older suspension. If 1.6T was the price of the base, then yes. Otherwise nope.
cassmanio the 2019 Veloster has been spotted testing in heavy camouflage, I've heard it will be unveiled early 2018
If this had a Ford badge people would be gushing over this car.
If this car had an Independent Rear Suspension and a 1 second quicker 0-60MPH time we'd be gushing over it...
Honestly if this was the Kia Soul turbo with a manual gear box it would be my pick (and I'm a "Ford" guy) - I had a 2010 (bought in early 2009) Soul Sport with the 5 speed manual and thought it was a great car (should have never sold it). Also if Ford were selling this car they'd easily raise the price and "trim class" this car out of range for anyone that would consider it based on merit or performance.... Oh, and the turbo motor would be the ONLY choice as Ford wants to put a turbo on EVERYTHING these days.
Umm...in right hand drive countries (e.g. UK & Australia), the rear door IS moved to the passenger side. www.hyundai.com.au/cars/sports-cars/veloster-series-2
Research much?
This is the perfect car for undecided people. Do I want a 2 door or 4 door? I know, how about a 4 door on the left side and a 2 door on the right. Yeah that's it. And maybe I'll get another door in the back too. Than I'll have a four door, or wait, would that be a three door? But if you count the hood and fuel door than it would be a six door. Ah what the hell I'm so confused i'm just going to buy a scooter.
I deal with a lot of the naturally aspriated Velosters with the 6 speed EcoShift DCT. Those cars are absolute trash. The engine is basically out of the Accent and the transmission is clumsy and jerky. Very curious to see how the turbo drives
NOLAItsNotOva the manual is much better, I’m not crazy about any DCT from any brand. My neighbor had a focus with a DCT and it was really jerky and annoying. I’ve ridden in a Veloster with one and it was very hesitant. I’ve heard the manual drives a lot better and I can agree with that. Especially on the NAV.
I really like this car.
A shame it's built on the mediocre Elantra platform.
For a closer competitor , get a used scion TC . Even if it used it will be more reliable with its camry engine than any korean product .
5:23 this didn't happen in my TC
I’m just worried about people fitting in it 😬
The Veloster and the Soul, while great looking vehicles, are let down by their thirsty 4 cylinder engines. These cars are practically begging for hybrid drive trains.
Thirsty? They're not MPG champions, but it's easy to average 30MPG+ in a Veloster turbo if you're not in horrendous city traffic.
Collab with Doug DeMuro
Esses playboy... PUTO!!!
My old Tiburon is much nicer.
4th
Veloster soooooooo sec'y!
Not 4k liar
Im early
base model sucks ass, Turbo model not that fast
whaaaaaaaaaaaa the second row has only one door WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE..... do they want to pretend it's some sort of a van WTF
Ive seen only young lookin females driving these
Sounds like good chick bait, or are you looking for bois?
Nissan Juke is better than this. :)
Elantra Sport > Veloster Turbo
3rd
Good video. Terrible car
Poor right-lane-driving-countries, maybe start driving on the left side of the road...
Nevertheless this is an example for "design before practicability" - just forget to use the second row as actual seats. Maybe for baby seats, but even then only for a short period of time.
