  • There is a lot of hype about at the moment much ado the 8 speed auto conversion for 70 series cruisers.
    Why then have I gone to old route? At the time I was seriously looking the 8 speed conversion was still in testing and there was no "tangible" commitment to supply. More so the 8 speed required some frame work and tinkering with tail shafts and very limited warranty (for a "new" product).
    The "new" was not really tangibly new, insofar as the transmission being supplied. I'm a person who'd rather have something "new" and some tangible warranty that backs that product up.
    Cost wise, from the "estimates" thrown at me,. the cost difference was really not that much different.
    We had our conversion attended to by Difftrans Qld, out of Bundaberg. A recognised agent of Wholesale Automatics. When I started this process Wholesale raised an invoice for the "kit" supplied to Difftrans. I paid $10.000 on that total of $24,675.00. No fitting costs quoted nor parts from Difftrans (they'd need to supply cooler hardware).
    Per happen my Boss has a GST exemption on supply of vehicle parts. The cost out of Wholesale ought have come in at $22,000 for the kit and a further $475.00 (incl gst) for freight.
    The cost of living got us all.
    My estimates had us paying another $12,000 for the kit + $475 for freight + fitting costs. The labour/fitting/freight (invoice gst payable component of final costs) cost $4,975. That's a pretty fair price I figured and me thoughts $12,000 left. Nooooo, $13,805 was the final invoice for "parts" excluding GST.
    I'm not taking to this exercise to tarnish Difftrans, from what I was told Wholesale dictate the costs they can refer to customers.
    In the video I talk about the delay, delay, delay experienced. I garnished a feeling that being a customer not using Wholesale for the fitment I was relegated and relegated until I pushed back. Certainly, if you look at the Wholesale FB page they seemed to have plenty of supply late last year for the customers in their workshop.
    Anyway, I'll not go over this more here at this juncture.
    First impressions, yes its a truck auto it is not a sedan auto and it shifts accordingly. The transfer case shift is awkward and luckily it is sparingly used I suppose.
    The App console is far superior to the compushift display mounted in the centre console (I'd reckon that interface could be updated so it is easily seen, larger, takes on board more of the information available from the transmission computer). The centre console is beaut, it is a great fit and finnish.
    On the centre console, I was advised if I wanted to remove it I'd need to remove the transmission shifter linkages too. That makes it awkward if you want to mount a remote uhf inside the centre console afterwards, or anything. In fact, even running cabling down the centre of the cab now becomes awkward.
    I especially like that the fit to the back of the 1VD does not require an adapter plate nor is one needed for the transfer case. I especially like that the exhaust did not need to be modified, the tailshafts are original and the cross member is also original. These are traits especially noteworthy for someone who travels remote and travels great distances.
    I have yet to really make a decision on performance. I know the 79 steps off faster than when it had a manual. I'm guessing it'll guzzle more fuel and there will be more wear and tear on the brakes. The vehicle generally (town driving to date) requires a least 1500rpm to get moving and accelerate (moderately).
    You cannot use the torque converter lock up (Wholesale call it a torque converter clutch) if stationary = you stall. Travelling with the lock up on is as close as I have, yet, had to having a manual like drive.
    Haven't yet had the vehicle under load so I don't know where the temps will be for transmission and egt and coolant. I am expecting engine coolant and egt to be moderately hotter. It'd be nice to have a read out for the torque converter temperature (there is a sensor for it).
    One last point (almost), the Colbert installed in front of the intercooler is a pipe/fin cooler. It is the least economical (cheapest) of oils coolers. It'd have been nice to have a plate/fin cooler (like a radiator) and that may be something I ma need to look at. It'd have been nice to have AN fittings for the cooler lines rather than just push on.

      If you read the Description to the video I give a break down on costs. It was, for us, just a smidge under $30k. But then I had to “de-tune” the car so another remap and associated cost.
      I did 2 follow up videos on this conversion too.

    Im looking forward to your next video, thankyou for making this informatiin available. I have a 79 and the wife can't drive a manual and she would love an Auto. Also what brand is your ashtray switch surround I need to put in more switches and have no spaces left, this would be great.

    Do you think you may need to upgrade the size of your snorkel now?
    Looking at the size of that Fatz pipework, I'm having trouble believing that the snorkel is capable of supplying enough air.

      The size of the cold side (to the turbo) does not “regulate” how much air is inducted. Tricky sensors (MAF/MAP) help the ECU map out AFR.
      My tune is not sooo aggressive that I need a better air box or snorkel. The air load required to service the tune I have is adequately serviced by the cold side intake system. 22 March the cruiser gets de-tuned” so I am not loading the AB60 Auto input more than Wholesale have advised.
      Conversely, if I had been chasing 1000nM++ I’d have thrown +30 injectors in, replaced the air box and snorkel and looked at a fuel pump with greater volume capacity (and I’d also need to change the OME 2 micron fuel filter because that is a real inhibitor of fuel flow).
      In short, nope, the snorkel is more than adequate 👍
