79 Series Landcruiser Clearview Powerboards
The Old Girl 79 gets some electric steps - the #clearview #powerboards replace the old tried and reliable #arb scrub bars and side steps.
I figure the weight swap is in favour of the clear view gear (being lighter). Trade off, of course, no brush bars and I'm certain the powerboards are not in the same league of robustness as the old side steps (rock sliders).
Why?
You'll likely know I've had 2 knee replacement events in the last year and getting in and out of the cruiser is not (was not) getting easier. I also figure our truly truly off road adventuring is more a memory now than something we plan for the future.
I mean to say, we sold our off road camper trailer well over 2 years ago and whilst we still travel roads less Travelled, #behindthestreets, we are not about to drag the #Australianoffroad Matrix caravan into the same locations.
Our trip planning from February next year, for a year, will not see us into the areas or destinations where serious 4wd travel is likely. Later this year we will certainly be seeing some more outback and planning for 2026 will see some desert travel, Pilbara and Kimberley and hopefully east Arnhem Land. Again, nothing where serious 4wd travel is contemplated.
The video tells you that the bull bar and winch is going as well. That is more a result of getting rid of objects up front that reduce air flow. I'm keenly trying to ensure longevity of the new auto and reducing potential for heat.
I am replacing the bull bar (and winch and spot lights) but with a custom design (made in Australia) more suitable of achieving airflow into the front of the vehicle. Whilst that little suite of work is done hopefully early September) we are also swapping out the front seats with a brand known for their ergonomic support and comfort.

Starlink RUGGED by OUTBACK COMMS

Nothing new here, in fact this Rugged has now been superseded by a more current version of the Rugged pack produced by Outback Comms. Such is the nature of tech stuff!! Anyhow, I've had this bit of kit o the 79 landcruiser now for almost a year. I did find, with this kit, the cabling for the starlike excessively looooong and so too the cabling for the external puk wifi aerial. I had asked for a...

    I put a set on our 200 series last year as my wife was having mobility issues after several surgeries. ARB Jindalee did their usual great work with the installation. It’s meant we can still easily continue touring with our AOR MPT too. I was concerned with how they would be in the sand but a few days chasing schools of tailor last year on K’gari/Fraser had no negative impact. Enjoy your easier climb.

    Interesting to paint alloy. But in my experience, alloy doesn't rust. And underneath, I thought AOR vans have allow sheets which protect the bottom of the van. No need to add extra weight. I doubt AOR would have the protection plates as an option.

    • @kennymepicadventures876
      @kennymepicadventures876 22 години тому

      Alloy does corrode and it tarnishes. The painting was more aesthetic driven than concern about longevity. There are no underbody “panels” to protect the composite fibreglass. Sure, the tanks are inside a sheet metal “box”. We use to own an ultimate off road camper (also composite fibreglass) and standard they have a deadener applied under neath. Much akin motor vehicles. I applied the deadener as a measure of protection and longevity (lighter than “plates” for protection) and cheaper than repairing the composite fibreglass. Thanks for your comments. kennym

      Hey buddy, Travelled just over 3000kms with the AB60. It has plenty of positives, for sure. I reserved about towing at the moment. My gut feeling is the oil cooling I have won’t be good enough. But my 79 has a front mount intercooler so it will be different for those who have a top mount intercooler. Fuel consumption is more than a manual. The AB60 is limited by how much nM you can throw at it. But I know Wholesale sell a more beefier AB60 than their “standard” that I have. I’m gradually getting use to the “feel” of the drive. Do I miss the manual, probably not. It is a significant investment. But for me, it was the cheaper option than buying a 200 and building it or buying a 300 and building it. This will just make driving the 79 a bit easier (and on highway it’s quieter). kennym

      @@kennymepicadventures876 thanks for the feedback appreciate it I’m also worried about cooling as from what I’ve been told by the installer they now only supply the PWR radiator with heat exchanger as the main cooling no separate cooler as they have decided this is the best option moving forward . I believe it’s the same radiator as you run on your cruiser already. Hopefully PDI come up with something I’ve also considered going the bigger cast pan straight away as I’ll be towing a van mainly.

    • @kennymepicadventures876
      @kennymepicadventures876 2 місяці тому

      @@krisormerod779 if you don’t have a front mount intercooler I can’t see why you could not fit a heavy duty oil cooler up front similar to the 200 series. PDI have a nice looking oil cooler they are developing. PWR also do oil coolers and they can do custom coolers too. Just stay away from the fin and tube coolers. Note, it’s cheaper getting the radiator directly from PWR than through Wholesale. If that is the way you head.

      Best of luck. I’m dropping a short 3rd instalment after having just completed a short tow with our van. It’ll be about fuel consumption, a bit of video watching the shifts and stuff like that. New Transfer Case! The old girl had 307000 kms on it and i’ve given it a hammering over the years. When the 79 was under heavy load I was getting a bearing noise from the transfer case. It’d only happen in 1st and sometimes 2nd. I put a new rear diff centre and locker in about 15 months ago after destroying it. I put a new rear axle housing (DWIZ) with chrome moly axles in August 22. It’s got pretty new uni joints. In short, the transfer case I saw as a weak point in my drive line. I didn’t want to Bgr around so I decided to replace it. Long winded answer 😂 kennym

      In the description to the video I mention my initial thoughts and I think I pinned a comment as well. I’ve not towed (am doing that today) nor have I been off road to assess how it performs. But, the highway driving I did last week it was pretty good. It’s a little clunky, as I mention, when cold. But it’s not terribly clunky. It’s a bit hard to video the “feeling” of the shifts. But I’ll do a bit 👍 I’ve noticed when in auto (not sports mode nor with lock up engaged by the switch) it seems to only use lock up in 5th and 6th. I’m guessing that is for drive ability. It’d likely be more clunky if it locked up through most the gears. Thanks for the comment. kennym

    • @billroach2393
      @billroach2393 3 місяці тому

      With the Allison in the Chevy, locking up the converter is achieved by selecting "TOW/HAUL" mode. It stays locked in all gears except 1st, but won't allow lock up to occur at all if the box hasn't reached a predetermined temperature. Not sure what that temperature is, but suspect its about 50°c. Also, "TOW/HAUL" alters the revs at which each change occurs. For example, in non TOW/HAUL mode I get into 6th at about 90kph, but in T/H mode it's about 115kph. As such, with the caravan on, I rarely get into 6th.....not unless I exceed speed limit whilst overtaking. Once back down to 100kph, it'll hold 6th until speed drops to about 95kph. I'm sure you'll love it all the time with the possible exception of steep downhill 1st gear crawling.

    0:01 Fully invested in this significant modification now. I’m not a full blown convert, I mean it hasn’t seen towing nor dirty work yet so that vote remains on hold. But, for simple highway driving it sure makes it an easy drive, and I reckon a bit quieter too. For a 79 any reduction in noise is a benefit. What do you think?

Thinking I might try this approach 1st. M troopie is always away from home, as it my FiFo away vehicle. and only have a minimal tool kit with me. So hoping that with the top loch screw out of the way you can just push the up button to eject the antenna and cord. Would save me removing the 3 battery I have along the side to the car :) .

      If you read the Description to the video I give a break down on costs. It was, for us, just a smidge under $30k. But then I had to “de-tune” the car so another remap and associated cost. I did 2 follow up videos on this conversion too. kennym

    Do you think you may need to upgrade the size of your snorkel now? Looking at the size of that Fatz pipework, I'm having trouble believing that the snorkel is capable of supplying enough air.

      The size of the cold side (to the turbo) does not “regulate” how much air is inducted. Tricky sensors (MAF/MAP) help the ECU map out AFR. My tune is not sooo aggressive that I need a better air box or snorkel. The air load required to service the tune I have is adequately serviced by the cold side intake system. 22 March the cruiser gets de-tuned” so I am not loading the AB60 Auto input more than Wholesale have advised. Conversely, if I had been chasing 1000nM++ I’d have thrown +30 injectors in, replaced the air box and snorkel and looked at a fuel pump with greater volume capacity (and I’d also need to change the OME 2 micron fuel filter because that is a real inhibitor of fuel flow). In short, nope, the snorkel is more than adequate 👍

    Great choice. I'll be watching with interest to see if you're happy. I'm going to guess you'll be as happy as a pig in shit! Keen to see what it does to cruising revs and fuel consumption

    Was there any issue with the brakes pior changing the loom?

    • @kennymepicadventures876

      Hi Dave, Thanks for the question. I dropped a video last week which sets up the background to this video. I think it is titled how to replace the and sensors …. But, in short, I had a fault code on the scan gauge which was faulty speed sensor. I replaced the sensors (both sides) but still had the code throw up. I checked continuity on the right loom and it was no good. I bought looms for both sides. Fault code no longer throws up. kennym

    Thanks for the video. Cleared up some of the mystery of my trailers brakes. Good trick I've found to install the new races is to use the old race. I cut a slot through the old race and drive it home with that. Don't have to worry about damaging the face of the new one and it slides straight out once it's home.

    Hmmmm...... AN fittings in rad'? First thought was auto transmission, but you've already discounted that idea, when I suggested it last year. Second thought would be that there's a Whipple (or similar) on the way....but that's out too, given that you've just plumbed in a new Garrett. So, to my way of thinking, that can only mean that you are going to fit a liquid to air aftercooler. That seems a bit difficult to comprehend too, given that you've already gone from top mount to front mount air to air unit. So, I'll remain intrigued until you put me out of my misery. 😂

    im sure woomera is a CIA front - a pop up town in the middle of nowhere. its too hot to live there....why do they live there ? im a new sub - all your vids - are the stuff left on my bucket list....by bucket list i mean the stuff I've never crossed off (crossed everything else off - stuff that's left). there's not many nooks and crannies left. I've been binge watching vids, most people are on their third big lap. can get a bit much, so many things to see - arent. there's different types of big lappers. some are solo (like me) we are fine with sleeping in a hwy off ramp if its got a tiny water hole and some birds. Over a sand dune and down a road and there's bins and loos okay I'm sleeping there. that kind of traveller has a real nature experience. then theres peeps with vans. they can get in most areas and sand is their nemesis. then theres hardcore campers with vans that will just drag the thing anywhere, 4 foot of mud, its okay I'm getting this thru i paid extra for the snorkel. Theres tourers who like to drive around places and people watch, doing the odd paid tour (that's a whole other rabbit hole tours of nature and outback stuff is real hit and miss, tripadvsior helps a tonne, and i think that's why all outback vids look the same now as theres a hit list of things to see and the bad stuff just don't even film it). Others stay for a month in one spot to absorb it, fisherman and hunters do that over a weekend. others wont get off bitumen when most of the great stuff is 30km from the hwy but you only got 2wd. So many different types of travellers. love your channel.
