I bought a 2017 Prado in the 4L petrol. I'm originally from Canada, and I've never had a diesel before, so I was happy to stick with petrol in Oz. No issues thus far. No surprises either as I have had FJ's and 4Runner's in the past.
KD/KZ best pick of a bad bunch, would chose a Toyota over anything else. Generally anything that immediately goes wrong can be fixed with zip ties, duck tape, wd40 - It will get you home. However if I was MD of Toyota I would have worked on a reliable (head gaskets and piston ring oil consumption!) petrol unit, suck squeeze bang blow, compression fuel air spark, its simple to diagnose and fix which is the underpinnings of Hilux and LC and the economy would have been the same. Unfortunately it was just poor timing with diesels - especially euro - as they were just band aided to get through emissions regs and made ever more unnecessarily complex - my 2010 150 was the prime of the era. Coupled with our thirst for (apparently) better economy, the advent of "torque better than bhp" education we (manufacturers and consumers) were sucked in by governments into buying and producing diesel. Even the smallest component of a diesel engine, a washer, can leave us at best stranded fighting life or death or worse with a massive debt and bankrupt. I so wish the prado/hilux was just built with a simple, powerful enough, reliable I6/v6/v8 NA unit that gave 2 fingers to emissions and a hug to reliability and warranty so much so you'd see a better aftermarket for Hilux vehicles than you do for rangers - in lay mans terms....theres a reason the F150 is the best selling "car" in the US.
I got the 1KD engine from a 2014 Toyota Hilux with only 25,000km on clock and installed in my BJ74. It has all the engine upgrades including new piston designs and one of last batch made in factory. Drives like a dream. Incredible torque and power. Added larger intercooler scoop, 4 core radiator, heavy duty clutch and really happy with the engine mated to R151 gearbox and 79 series transfer-case (Hi-Lo).
i still have my 5L diesel 2004 2wd hi lux, don't pamper it doesn't use any oil, decent consumption, no DPF, no common rail pressures, no turbo, no power. over 400,000 klms.not a miss at all. just want it it to be a 4wd. who needs power if you are old like me and have the gearing. am I totally nuts?
I can't comment on them all but do love these videos just spitballing the pros and cons of them all. Personally I own an intercooled 1KZ 3rd gen Surf with 185xxx kms which I absolutely love - to be fair at almost 30 years old its pretty much had everything replaced on it including a respray, but with a shift kitted valve body and unichip it goes real good, best thing about them is they're so easy to work on and parts are abundant. My old man has had a 1KD 150 series since new 2009 and has easily been the best car he's owned. Happy new year to everyone!
Love my 05 120 1kz.....up to 325k now, new squirters, bfe n glowplugs. Does everything i want it to do, round town, long runs and towing caravan. With the van im not in a hurry anyway, so its all good. 9ks per litre not towing, happy with that......I'll keep up the maintenance myself and enjoy the ride. Love the videos
Gold nuggets, just subscribed. I recently jumped out of a Kia 2012 AWD 2.2 litre diesel Platinum Sorento at 180,000km...loved it but apparently they develop engine issues with age. I have just retired and looking to do some travel up north, and with all the rain, a 1KD 150 Prado 4X4 with a rooftop tent seems the way to go. Looking at a 2014/15 Altitude at the moment...thanks.
Will be interesting to see the long-term dependability of the 1GD 2.8-litre in the updated LC70 series, especially towing/heavy hauling and with tyre upsizing owners feel they have to do.
This video has me thinking about keeping my LC 120 2009 1kd 6spd manual forever. Done 215k probably will last years. It’s an awesome car, as you have said.
I think the 1GD goes really well in my vehicle, plenty of power and torque limited modifications, dual battery, snorkel, prefilter and underbody protection. I have had many 4wd over 40 years, 18000 km mainly open road trips so far, extremely happy 2022 Fortuner owner. I get 8.6 l 100 around town, 8.8 l 100 driving at around 100kmh. Will flip it on 5 years. Seems like the next Fortuner will be a Petrol Hybrid may be the future one when Euro 6 comes in. Watched the whole video 😊n
1FZ-FE Bulletproof. Sold my first at 680,000 kms. Currently have a 93 on 450,000 kms Rarely rev past 3,000 rpm Good cheap fun , reliable and when you need it , pulls like a locomotive. Driven sedately not bad on fuel
True, that engine is probably in the top 5 most reliable engines ever made for a passenger vehicles in my opinion. A bit of a false economy thinking you save money because the engine is reliable though as it uses so much fuel. If you did 680,000 kms with a fuel economy of 20 litres per 100 kms and a fuel price of $1.50 per litre, that would be a total of $5,100,000... thats $5.1 million. You have defiantly paid for a few gold plated toilets for a couple of Saudi Arabian princes

Totally agree Anthony I'll replace the LPG v6 prado when the new 2door FJ 2.5 4 cylinder Hybrid gets released in a few years. Kids have left home so nolonger have need for a big wagon.
I still got my 1kdj150, glad i didnt upgrade to newer model thanks to you Anthony I'm keeping it. And yes you are the best on prado and hilux engines period. Mines on 300k still going strong with new dlc coated injectors.
Thanks for the very informative video! How often would you suggest injectors to be changed in 2011 Land Cruiser Prado 150 series, 3.0T diesel 6 speed manual? 1KD
Hi Anthony, nuggets, nuggets, nuggets everywhere. I agree with you about the 2013 Hilux with the aisin 5 speed auto. What do you think about the max/colorado and triton of the same vintage and the same transmission? Only ask because while I agree Toyota are the best, I find it difficult to justify the Toyota tax
Hi, I’m looking to buy a Hilux. Based in Ireland and it’s gonna be used primarily for hunting, so bit of highway and lots of messy off road work. What year and model would you recommend? Thanks
this video is hilarious mate, thank you for sharing some of your knowledge...made it to the end. I agree, however, I am one of them that has a 1GD, so perhaps I am stuffed as you have described. So far, It drives nicely as it is with the lighter fortuner and I don't tow anything around. Just the usual 2-3 times a year track on a weekend 4dw/camping trip with the mates. Is it really that bad that I need to go and sell it?
Toyota Hilux Invincible 1 GD 2.8, 2021. The car was brand new. After 2 years and 115k km i changed timing chain (complete kitt/ 2200 usd). Just subscribed excellent channel I am in the market for a Toyota Hilux If you had the choice between a 2013 or a 2018 same ks with slight price differences which one one you go for
Watched right through Anthony, another great vid thanks mate. You're the fastest talker on youtube! I bought a 2017 Hilux new and to be honest I'm a bit surprised at your findings and opinion. My mate has a 2013 Hilux and we compare them offroad and driving offsite to get lunch etc. We love them both, but do concede the newer GD engine and transmission performs better, no question. Now having said that I have driven a two other N80 hiluxs that don't drive as well as mine, so I'm not shocked by your findings. I drove a 2019 Rouge that was crap and I don't get it? My hilux is responsive like driving a sedan around town and my gear shifts are smooth, maybe I just got lucky? It is an amazing 4x4 (it is twin locked) and consistently outperforms the 2013 model using the same gearing (maybe because of the longer wheel base?). Anyway interested that you have drawn such a strong, unshakable opinion. For the record I never tow other than a small light trailer once a month.
I'm not sure of the transmission. The car has actually recently been sold and he bought a new SR. I should actually ask him how his new car drives, I know he is happy with it. Now that I think about it a few years back a supervisor took my hilux to the shop (his N80 was blocked in) and when he came back he expressed how mine drove better than his, he was annoyed. @@Fourby4Diesel

@@Fourby4Diesel Thank you for that. Suspected it may be but did not want to spend money then find out same symptom. Thanks also in one of your other posts for identifying turbo seal kit from Toyota. Have noticed some turbo kits only give a couple of seals. Cheers Mate !
I completely disagree. I’ve had 2 of every generation Hilux since 1990. That included a ‘06 SR manual and ‘12 SR manual (both 1KD’s), as well as a ‘16 SR auto and ‘22 auto (both 1GD’s). They were all used on the farm and the Vic High Country. The 1KD wasn’t a bad motor, though it was absolutely gutless right off idle (far better suited to an auto). The engine had a very heavy flywheel effect which I suspect was a band aid fix to prevent it from stalling down low and very little top end power. The 1GD was a significant step forward and especially with the updated 150KW engine. I do a lot of overtaking and the updated 1GD absolutely whallops the others before it. My wife also owned a ‘15 Prado 1KD altitude at the same time and it performed way better than the the 1KD’s in the ‘06 and ‘12 Hilux’s.

2022 1GD Melbourne to bendigo up all the hills without dropping down a gear. Tip do not use cruise control going up and stay above 95 kmh at the bottom.
I’m not familiar with all of the Toyota diesel engines but I can say my dads old 1985 model land cruiser troop carrier with the inline 6 cylinder common rail diesel engine is probably the most reliable engine I’ve seen by Toyota,it has nearly 700,000 miles on the odometer and is still running, yeah it needs a full rebuild but with 700,000 miles with only the usual maintenance done to it in nearly 40 years I’d say the engine speaks for itself.
So the 2KD-FTV is not very known in Australia? So far it is ok for my light duty and daily use in my Hilux. Just 120kKm on the clock. DPF still ok but keen to remove it asap.
My 2KD-FVT is at 200k km's now. Placed the 7mm plate to minimize EGR, works like a charm. DPF in place and needed for yearly check in the Netherlands (EU).
1GD cant be that bad. Heaps of tried and tested examples out there with good kms now. The updated 150kw engine is pretty strong, very tunable. In reality its 200cc off the KD, sureeely. It will be interesting when these engines get over 250km.

The old Toyota diesel 6cl and the V8s in the landcuisers are good for 1million kays if serviced regularly towing a 3 ton caravan around Australia if you don't flog it , but this small 4cl diesel half the size working twice as hard to be the new V8 killer , I don't think it would make it to 1/2 million kays it will ware out fast , what do you think
Quality of engine materials is good. It might last longer than you think. It will definitely depend how it’s used and it will chew even more fuel because it will be working so hard to get the job done.
Do you have a video on the 1GD-FTV engine (177 Hp)? I bought one, but I do not know if it is the 1GD with 177 Hp or with 204 Hp. Year of make is 2020. How can I get this information? I have an engine number...Can it be exchanged with the current engine? The current engine is the 177 Hp engine, year of make is 2018...european model.
I just took delivery of a 2023 hilux 1GD and it drives fine, I think the powers fine I’ve no issue with it. However I’d never buy a 1GD in a Prado that’s too gutless for me, I’d rather get the Y63 instead for an SUV.

My 2022 1GD purchased at 10k now 30K average fuel 7.8 l per 100. Will do 6.5 at steady 100 kmh no head wind. I rarely go over 110kmh and have no racks.

I've always called a Prado a FAKE LANDCRUISER. I kept the Last of the Real ones, an 80 series with an FT in it. I gave it a health check last month @ 420000 kms, the Mains & rod bearings have virtually no wear on them, good for another half a million. And having studied Electrical Engineering I don't agree about the Hybrids being a viable option, maybe short term, but long term NO WAY. Battery technology is still rubbish, you might get 5 years out of a battery then your up for 10's of thousands of dollars, that's not including other problems like failed controllers etc. Keep it simple, keep it reliable, it's not rocket science.
1KD fans are weirdos. They'll jump on 1GD and call it better when Toyota launch a new engine. I also have 1KD but a 1GD in markets that have no DPF or EGRs it's brilliant
Why does no one talk about 5l engine , even when it’s obvious that they are very durable and the choice of engine by the United Nations Landcruiser prado 150
1kz was a very engine. 1kd had issues and thr 1gd has gone a lil more downhill in the name of efficiency. I am kinda Toyota doesn’t test their engines under more severe conditions or perhaps real world conditions
I have not heard anybody ramble along more. No facts, just whatever this, whatever that. Talk about "all the problems" but did not list any.. Moving right along.

1KD 2012 60th Anniversary, the one with 190HP ❤ repeat after me ... light duty. U want a towing beast > v8. Happy New Year Antonio from Spain
Toyota Hilux Invincible 1 GD 2.8, 2021. The car was brand new. After 2 years and 115k km i changed timing chain (complete kitt/ 2200 usd). From about 90 k km I heard that there was something wrong with the engine in the morning when I started and it was cold. Now i have 135k km: The power steering pump runs hard sometimes. I think will be dead soon. DPF problem
2022 1GD Melbourne to bendigo up all the hills without dropping down a gear. Tip do not use cruise control going up and stay above 95 kmh at the bottom.
I'm pretty new to all of this but after this video I'm assuming the 2GD 2019 is even worse then?
2007 1kd takeing me all over Wester Australia towing box small camper trailer. Going strong 300,000ks now another 300 to go 👍
I’m not familiar with all of the Toyota diesel engines but I can say my dads old 1985 model land cruiser troop carrier with the inline 6 cylinder common rail diesel engine is probably the most reliable engine I’ve seen by Toyota,it has nearly 700,000 miles on the odometer and is still running, yeah it needs a full rebuild but with 700,000 miles with only the usual maintenance done to it in nearly 40 years I’d say the engine speaks for itself.
That cannot be common rail, old school diesel.
LC 120 1KD is the one. Much lighter than LC150.
Just do the regular maintenance and look after injectors.
so just to clarify , is the hilux KD detuned compared to the prado

Was the 2KD no option in Australia
The old Toyota diesel 6cl and the V8s in the landcuisers are good for 1million kays if serviced regularly towing a 3 ton caravan around Australia if you don't flog it , but this small 4cl diesel half the size working twice as hard to be the new V8 killer , I don't think it would make it to 1/2 million kays it will ware out fast , what do you think
Quality of engine materials is good. It might last longer than you think. It will definitely depend how it’s used and it will chew even more fuel because it will be working so hard to get the job done.
That was a 'long-yak-yak' video!
Got a lc90 v6, and wish I could 1kd it with 5speed auto would be a good vehicle I reckon
Nugget how are the 5vz 3.4 ltr petrol engines in the Prado’s
Thirsty but very reliable, just don’t get one on gas
Do you have a video on the 1GD-FTV engine (177 Hp)? I bought one, but I do not know if it is the 1GD with 177 Hp or with 204 Hp. Year of make is 2020. How can I get this information? I have an engine number...Can it be exchanged with the current engine? The current engine is the 177 Hp engine, year of make is 2018...european model.
3L D4d top, non problematic engine. Better then gd6.
I just took delivery of a 2023 hilux 1GD and it drives fine, I think the powers fine I’ve no issue with it. However I’d never buy a 1GD in a Prado that’s too gutless for me, I’d rather get the Y63 instead for an SUV.

Gold Nuggets, I just bought a 2019 1GD 😬
Golden chicken v6 twin turbo nuggets 👍😎🇦🇺🍻
My 2022 1GD purchased at 10k now 30K average fuel 7.8 l per 100. Will do 6.5 at steady 100 kmh no head wind. I rarely go over 110kmh and have no racks.
Think the misses was trying to cook the plum puddings & needed some peace and quiet “
Anthony “ go make a video and have a burble 😁
Happy new year, keep up the good work
I've always called a Prado a FAKE LANDCRUISER.
Gold nuggets 🤙🍻
My dad has a 2011 Toyota hilux sr 4wd turbo diesel 3.0l 1kd ftv 5 speed manual
The best domestic 4WD diesel engine is not made by Toyota. I would love to see you expand outside of Toyota only.
What does the red D mean on the D4D and what does gx mean
Direct 4 diesel
Gold nuggets 😊
GoLd nuggets 👍
nuggets of gold
Diesels are great in cars too.
1KD fans are weirdos. They'll jump on 1GD and call it better when Toyota launch a new engine. I also have 1KD but a 1GD in markets that have no DPF or EGRs it's brilliant
Gold Nuggets!
The 5l by far the best engine in those suvs
👍🏻🇬🇧Hilux 1KD 5AT 65K, 2012 glad I didn't upgrade to a 1GD 💩
1hdt for life
4 litre v6 twin turbo hybrid!
Gold Nuggets🎉
4L V6 twin turbo
Gold nuggets 😀
How many joints did you smoke while doing this video 😂
Why does no one talk about 5l engine , even when it’s obvious that they are very durable and the choice of engine by the United Nations Landcruiser prado 150
1kz was a very engine. 1kd had issues and thr 1gd has gone a lil more downhill in the name of efficiency. I am kinda Toyota doesn’t test their engines under more severe conditions or perhaps real world conditions
Gold nuggets 🎉🍺
save yourself the time it's the 1hz
Gold Nuggets 😄
How about putting timestamps. Lot of yak yak, get to the point faster
I have not heard anybody ramble along more. No facts, just whatever this, whatever that. Talk about "all the problems" but did not list any.. Moving right along.
Gold nuggets!!
V6 💯%
So after listening to the whole video, your suggesting the best 4wd engine is an old 3lt 2011 Ford Ranger/Mazda BT50 😂
Gold Nuggets
Gold Nugget. 29min
18 carrot gold nuggets 😅
1fz-fe for the win.
