Let me tell you a story then! The day after he died, I mean the very next day, I went to a bar somewhere in Hollywood and the door guy literally had a TShirt on the said “I 🪼 Steve Irwin” It wasn’t a jellyfish emoji tho. It was a stingray emoji. I laughed so hard I found out I was goin to hell.
Based on Wiki it was a little over 2 months between when he died and when this episode aired. That being said I believe there was a Steve Irwin joke in the Hell on Earth 2006 episode (where the actual Steve Irwin showed up to a costume party) and that was a little over a month after his passing.
They did a joke the episode prior to this, with Steve Irwin showing up at Satan's Halloween party with a stingray sticking out of his chest. He was forced to leave the party because he wasn't in costume. The Australians were so mad about it, in this episode, they did two Steve Irwin jokes.
A-grade irony, such a quick turnaround. South Park and Simpsons do this so expertly. I listened to this line 4 times in a row when I was watching. Simpsons will say one thing and show the opposite, like “[event] will never happen” and then the next beat is it happening. South Park will say one thing and then say the exact opposite, the characters will completely contradict themselves. Having a person do it when you can inhabit their mind is, I think, more hilarious than having the irony written into the world.
I think the point of this episode, which it feels like most people miss, is to make fun of all the movies that have this trope. the young sports team, that is facing a tough challenge, but not only do they have to worry about training hard, they have a sick child in their team, and if they dont win the game, the child is going to die. theyre poking fun at how ridiculous it is.
in my opinion, this episode teaches a good old lesson that real life isn't exactly like films. Something many people tend to forget when they start acting like cinema protagonists for the sake of their stupid drama that always ends up affecting innocent others. Of course, the episode isn't about that, but it highlights the difference very well

12:53 I like how they’re referencing this trope again after already doing so in “The Losing Edge.” And speaking of the Losing Edge, seems like Randy’s always been the same type of dad at sporting events. Well mostly, at least he wasn’t fighting anyone this time.
This episode always leaves you in a weird juxtaposition. It’s so dark & twisted that you both want to hold in your laughter but also can’t help but find yourself both cringing and laughing at the same time. It’s this perfect blend of classic sport tropes & dark comedy.

Yeah, it is surprising that South Park didn’t fit in a Mighty Ducks poop prank in this episode. And on the contrary, it would be Cartman sneaking out with Linda Stotch’s purse, crapping in it, hide it under a tree or bush, then tell Butters that his mom misplaced her purse and point out the location. It's really funny watching you react to this episode. You're such a kind hearted dude you can't laugh without feeling bad
No joke though, the rivalry between the Avalanch and the Redwings has always been pretty intense. The idea of the Redwings going all out against a peewee team from Colorado, plausible.
this ep is funny af I dont get why ppl hate it so much, south park is always dark.
First time seeing this one. Holy crap was that awesome. So proud of the Red Wings.
When he came out, everyone hated him, but as for me, he is very significant and fits this show perfectly. Real life is different from movies, you will not always be the one who will get fame, recognition and love at the end of a difficult path, not at all, you can often turn out to be those guys who lost and whom no one remembers.
This episode really brings back those films and game shows about kids' sport from the late 2000s.
Very nostalgic
