Something that perfectly says how South Park and Family Guy work: "With Family Guy you remember jokes, with South Park you remember entire episodes"
The cartoon wars aged like a fine wine, its message is much more fitting these days than back when it first aired

back then it was a warning, now we can see they were right
I remember this specific phenomenon in three separate European countries. A teacher was beheaded in France, another teacher is currently in hiding in the UK and a Swedish artist had to live with bodyguards until he died in an accident caused by said bodyguards . There are probably way more im not aware of, in all the places that now has Muslims that didn't used to have them. This is not to mention things like Charlie Hedbo or the danish cartoon that was the impetus for this episode.
Honestly most of South Parks best episodes have aged like that.

Same. It's just a shame that we have to wait a whole week. That's the worst thing about 2-parters.
What's interesting is that nobody was offended when Super Best Friends came out, it wasn't until Cartoon Wars, or maybe not even until episode 200, for Super Best Friends to get censored and blocked.
Well we are very lucky that Muslims are very peacefull guys and never execute or explode somebody for a strange reasons🤗

Yep, it was and still remains one of the real and truest examples of hypocrisy in the zeitgeist of the time and with even more relevance now unbelievably.
Well duh... they say it in the show. It wasnt untill they published muslim cartoons in Denmark and the rules changed. Its one of the main plot points in this infamous episode, calling out the hypocrisy.. did that just fly over your head?
Matt and Trey hid Muhammed in the title screens of a lot episodes. He's even in the first frame of this YT video next to Satan and Scott Tenorman.

Matt and Trey legit tried to get them to show Muhammed for this episode to prove a point, that it was the most mundane scene ever, but Comedy Central refused.

Loved your reaction as always, Dash! As a Muslim American who grew up on both Islam and South Park, these are two of my all-time favorite episodes of TV. I've found that as much of a stir as the depiction of the prophet stirred in the media, ironically, the commentary on Family Guy's lazy comedy writing has had a much longer-lasting impact in the cultrural zeitgeist.
I love the research you do for every episode, Dash, so it you read this, I highly suggest you do a deep dive into the only actual physical threat Matt and Trey got: one college aged American convert who later recanted and worked for the state department as an "antiterrorism expert". No Muslims that I personally knew had a problem with these episodes.

I gotta agree on last impact on family guy. There writing did change quite bit after this episode came out and for a time they really tried to change the formula. I haven't watched show in years so no idea if they want back to old formula or still the same. But very easily can tell a family guy show early seasons vs later.
More relevant as the years go by here in Europe. Might become more relevant seeing all the migration into the US as well
@@Choegoup I live in Texas where I was born and raised; we have a serious migrant crisis of our own. Not at all to downplay the seriousness of both crises or the dangers/complications of unresistricted immigration (it's def a serious problem in my opinion), but to be frank, I really don't think that terrorist attacks as a result of satirists drawing pictures of Mohammed is going to be one of those problems. Neither in America nor Europe.

Im from Denmark and I remember when the Muhammed crisis was at its peak. I find the story really interesting.
After 9/11, public debate had almost exclusively negative viewpoints towards Muslim societies and when the drawings were published, religious groups in the country finally pushed back. Demanding public apology from the Prime minister, contacting embassies of Muslim countries, who then invited the Prime Minister for discussion on the current social climate around Muslims.
When no discussion or apologies were given and only a statement regarding the protection of free speech, they went to religious groups in the middle east. Some more extreme than others. Looking for a response. But the response spiraled out of control with burnings of Embassies and lynching of Christian communities in Africa.
Theres alot more to the story. Embellishments on the docier of the delegation. Mullahs pleading the delegation let the matter rest , as to not bring more trouble to Muslims. And more.

I always bought South Park DVDs as soon as they were released (when DVDs were a thing). At the time, all episodes were intact and uncensored. I'm glad I bought them when I did!

Yesterday my cat passed away and today I had to bury him, and this video was the first thing that managed to make me forget all the sadness for 18 minutes. And I just want to say thanks for that.

Of all the southpark reaction channels I've come across, your editing is top notch. I've caught some much social and cultural things because of the many subtle yet apparent things you're not missing at all that went over my head when i was in my teens/early 20s. So many movie references I've learned from your channel alone that went wayy over my head 😂😂. 👍
This episode was also playing against Isaac Hayes reason for leaving the show. The fact that he was okay with SP mocking every religion until it touched upon his beliefs was incredibly hypocritical.
Return of Chef is another classic.

The Mad Max style kiddies tricycle chase is comedy gold. Right down to the police car completely pointlessly flipping over and exploding in a great ball of flames.
Also if this episode taught me anything, it's that Family Guy is rubbish and I should never, under any circumstances, subject myself to it.
Family Guy isn't that bad, it's never claimed to be what it isn't. If you like short jokes where you don't have to think, Family Guy. And if you want something with alot more political/satirical stuff, South Park. I don't think I would hate a show just cause another show says it sucks. As good as this 2 parter is, I've always disliked their pettiness. Matt and Trey are better than that. Even Seth MacFarlane in interviews praised the guys but couldn't understand why they hate him.
Do follow that egg next because I love the part where Lola and Tolkien worked together love it big time dude

But man, I find family guy to be a great show in its own right. You dont necessarily need "good writing" to be a good show. people act like family guy needs to be something it wasnt intended to be, which is basically just a skit show with a story

The Quran does not explicitly or implicitly forbid images of Muhammad. The ahadith (supplemental teachings) present an ambiguous picture, but there are a few that have explicitly prohibited Muslims from creating visual depictions of human figures.
This episode is still iconic just by the fact, that Trey and Matt passionately hates the Family Guy show for real.
And this and next episodes received a lot of approval from other showrunners, who see more patient and tolerant back then.

Hellz yeah! The most important piece you had left to watch before being prepared to see 200 and 201. I hope you'll watch those next, or at least soon. Maybe you remember a while back on the Fatbutt & Pancake Head reaction I posted a list of episodes that you'd need to watch to get most of the callbacks in 200 and 201... after you watch Cartoon Wars part 1 and 2, the only episodes left on that list that you haven't reacted to yet are:
Cartman's Mom is a Dirty Slut (important to the story, and an iconic episode, season 1 cliffhanger finale, you should watch it), Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut (episode 2 of season 2... aired after they punked their entire fanbase by showing Terrence & Philip: Not Without My Anus as episode 1 after making them wait months to see the conclusion of the storyline), and Butt Out (not a great episode and not that important to understanding 200 and 201, so, can probably just skip this one)
Anyway... please either react to Cartman's Mom is a Dirty Slut and Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut (and possibly Not Without My Anus in between) and then do 200 and 201... or just skip to 200 and 201.

People get cancelled because of companies. That’s why all of our free speech ends at the door of our workplace. Nobody seems to give a shit about that. Free speeches between you and your government. We have decided your employer or sponsors can take their retribution elsewise. I don’t agree with it. But it’s always been the case, it’s not new. Your workplace social media aren’t constitutionally protected public squares. They are private company spaces. And they get to decide what we can and can’t say. That’s been the case for over 100 years.

Great reaction as always Dash! Just a few notes: Cartman's (and the terrorist leader's) remarks about Family Guy directly reflect how Matt and Trey feel about being compared to FG. Trey Parker in particular HATES that comparison because he genuinely feels Family Guy is just lazy writing, a series of unconnected jokes leading to and from nothing, whereas South Park's scripts do usually have the jokes directly reflect the plot and themes of a given episode. Also, the Super Best Friends episodes originally aired with NO protest about Mohammed being part of the group. It wasn't until after the Dutch cartoonist was killed that Comedy Central pulled the episodes from their rotation.
After Cartoon Wars part 2, i recommend trying 200 and 201(literally name of the episodes. They are the 200th and 201st episode.) They are pretty related to these episodes.

7:31 that would be the episodes “200” and “201” where all the actors they have ridiculed, including Tom Cruise (who leads them), filed a class action lawsuit against them and try to capture Muhammad so they can take his “goo” for themselves so they can’t be ridiculed either.
