    I must share this story because it happened today. My father and I have shared crossed words over this election and it’s shown a side of him that’s left my heart in pieces. Over the weekend I penned an email and decided to send to my mom today who let me know they were in the car driving to vote early and to email it to him. She would guarantee he’d read it before going in to vote. He did and was silent. He called me an hour ago letting me know he opted not to vote for trump knowing how passionately it meant to my mom and I.
    I don’t know the lord or Jesus. Hearing James speak of WWJD made me cry while walking. I want to know a person or a community that centers around those beliefs first. I want ethics and morals to unite and center us. The past few months have been dark but tonight I got some light.

      “in every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. he is always in alliance with the Despot abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. it is easier to acquire wealth and power by this combination than by deserving them: and to effect this they have perverted the purest religion ever preached to man, into mystery & jargon unintelligible to all mankind & therefore the safer engine for their purposes.” - Thomas Jefferson

    Thank you this interview. I have felt so alone for a very long time,( since the Reagan days and the Moral Majority rhetoric blasted through the Evangelical world) leaving me wondering where the God of love that drew me to Him was hiding. Rejected more than once for advocating justice, facing true history, caring about the environment, and loving the other, I had to exit stage left amid accusations and rage. How refreshing to hear believers speaking on the vary topics that captured my imagination in the 1960's through today. I am obviously old, but my yearning for the real Jesus to once again emerge among Christians is pure joy. I have searched for a local church gathering that promotes His love and acceptance but it has been tough. The melding of faith with the GOP has damaged the witness of the Gospel. To equate one with the other has been a disaster. The Project 2025 agenda is frightening. This has created a different Christ and a different Gospel than what the scriptures tell. God bless you both for this frank and honest discussion. Grateful.

    Thank you. This was a great discussion. I grew up Roman Catholic, but I am gay; I gave up the practice. I am now Anglican (Episcopal) as they are more affirming, and my church practices love of God and love of neighbour.
    When the election occurred in 2020, and even at the start of the 2024 election, I hated Trump et al., I came to realize that this wasn't very Christian of me and that I wasn't practicing love of neighbour. I have toned down the rhetoric. I pray for patience and to see people as the image of God that they are.
    I have also done this on social media, I watch how I reply to posts and strive to always be respectful and kind. Don't get me wrong, I am not a saint (no one is perfect), but I do my best.
    God bless, guys. Take care. 🤗❤

    James said “They have given up on Jesus, they have given up on church.” Exactly. Same here in Australia. Let us go to Him outside the camp, being His shame. I have spent my whole life outside the camp so to speak though o am loosely part of a church, I have worked and served Him on the margins of society. I am old. This has been brewing in the church a long time. New wine always breaks the wine skin. It is how Jesus renews His church. Be encouraged and follow Him.

    'Christian Nationalism' is an oxymoron. It is the temptation that Christ rejected, in favor of an eternal opening to all people.

      I don't think these churches are "literalists". If they were, they'd know all the Bible verses, especially in the teachings of Jesus, that directly contradict their so-called "conservative" worldview. (They're not really conservative because they are trying to destroy things not conserve them.)

    I am an exvangelical. I was disgusted by the Christian responses and actions since 2009 watching their hate and demonizing of Obama and going forward. I left the church and changed political party in 2010 at 48 years old after that many years being a Christian and almost as many being a Republican. It’s nothing to do with God, but His followers. I am an agnostic in a sense. I believe in Jesus’ teachings and believe the thousands of near death stories I’ve heard and read about. I’ve experienced Gods miracles. I want to believe in an afterlife so I will see the loved ones I’ve lost. BUT without a doubt I do not believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God and is not to be taken literally. I believe the Book of Revelations is a warning to Christians which they are ignoring. It’s obvious the Bible has been tampered with by man. I continue to help and be of service even more so now that I’m not in a church 2-3 times a week. I am free to be of service to my family and friends and strangers on the street. Whoever I come across in need I will do what I can to make their lives a little better or more if they want the help. I have resources… you don’t have to be religious to do & be good and kind.
    The thought of going back to any organized church makes me ill. I consider all fundamentalistic and legalistic religions to be cults. My ex hypoChristian family and friends don’t want anything to do with me, consider me a democrat demon, nor do I enjoy being around them since they have all endorsed Trump. Way worse for me than when Obama was the president. So much for the family values. So much for love. If God IS Love, per God of the Bible, these hypoChristians have neither.
    I pray for every being on the earth and for the earth every day.
    I hope all religious people hear what these men are saying.

    • @JH-pt6ih
      @JH-pt6ih 2 місяці тому

      I think there are basically two and "a half" types that say that. The first doesn't really know what they are saying and just repeating. If you ask them what they mean they will try to send you to Wikipedia or give you a meme or sheet of "facts". If you press them on what this would mean in practice, it really just breaks down to some form of more local government - however well thought out - and this is your dog/cocker spaniel example. The second group want to restrict who gets a vote according to some combination of restrictions - land/homeowners, having been a citizen for a number of years, or for there to be difference between naturalized citizen and a "born in the USA" citizen (which may even require multiple generations). The "half" group just want their guns and have some unclear and undeveloped (and very immature) notion of them and their posse magically running their local community with no thoughts of administration.

    My take on Jesus loving our enemies, because there is no hate in Jesus, and it also pollutes our souls. It doesn't mean letting our enemies get away with murder. When Jesus went to the temple, He was angry that a house of prayer, a house of God was used to make money. He stood up against the priests and corruption. I pray for my enemies, that they find light and wisdom. I don't hate them; I feel sorry for them.

    I am a pro-life Democrat. I am quite certain that there is no evidence against "embryonic personhood." That is the deciding factor for me. It is personally frustrating how little talk there is on the subject so I appreciate James Talarico for bringing it up and I agree with most everything else he said. I was shocked however to hear him say that he doesn't believe that most people subscribe to "embryonic personhood." I am quite sure that most pro-life people do, and most pro-choice people have not and don't want to address the question. Though neither pro-life nor pro-choice seem to have followed that through to it's conclusion.

  • @colonelweird

    Nice conversation, but I noticed James said something in passing that I found grating, misinformed, and frankly immoral. I'm not expecting anyone to come to agreement with me on this, but maybe someone will start asking some questions.
    At one point James said, and I think he attributed it to a professor, that Marx's problem is he didn't know about original sin; therefore he believed in utopia, and so we must oppose utopia. To be honest, I think this is probably meant merely as politician-speak for "Socialism BAD." Unfortunately, the argument implied in James' words is itself a very bad argument, so I will respond accordingly.
    First of all, Karl Marx explicitly and emphatically opposed utopianism. He was an enemy of the utopian socialists of his day, and the way his thought developed was always open-ended and subject to correction. Plus he made no attempt to propose a detailed picture of what he believed a communist society should look like. In short, he was not in any way, form, or fashion a utopian. From a Christian perspective, I would say that the statement James made about sin is actually implied in Marx's philosophy. The capitalist system is built on the premise that human greed can properly be made the fundamental driving force in society without that society destroying itself from within. Capitalism is fundamentally a utopian ideology that assumes we can escape the effects of the Fall and achieve prosperity for all ... through greed. Ask yourself in all seriousness: does that make any sense?
    The response of socialism is to say, in the words of the co-founder of the Catholic Worker, Peter Maurin: let us create a society in which it is easier for people to be good. That means that, to be extent possible, we should run our basic economic institutions on something other than greed. We should reward people for acting in ways that benefit all of us, not just the super-wealthy. This is not remotely a form of utopia; it simply says, we can do better than embracing sinful desire as the foundation of our economy. Human beings will still be sinners in a socialist society, but when power, ownership, and wealth are spread out to include everyone, the effects of sin won't have such a big chance of creating a total societal disaster. But that is what we have now.
    As Dorothy Day once famously said, "All our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy rotten system." She was talking about the system of empire, capitalism, militarism, and white supremacy. Let's instead create a system of democracy, peace, cooperation, and equity. That will never be possible within capitalism.

    • @emmanarotzky6565
      @emmanarotzky6565 2 місяці тому

      Isn’t Christianity ultimately a utopian project? “Bring about the kingdom of God” is just another way of saying “make the world as good as you can make it”, or “approach some form of utopia”?

    I holy love how in the last podcast interview where James said that it’s not on black people to close the gaps in the division- it is on them to close that gap onto their people who created this separation and hate.

    They talk about living your best life now. That's the message of the prosperity gospel. But that's not Christianity. Yeshua who thought it not robbery to be equal with God. That would be His best life. But He took on the form of a servant and became obedient unto death. Even the death of the cross. Which is the worst thing that has ever happened to anyone since the creation. He lived His worst life so that we could have a good life in eternity. Not in this life as some teach. But in eternity. And He told us to have the same mind and to take up our cross and follow Him. We are to live our worst life so that others can have a better life. Let the strong bear the infirmity of the weak.

      "Empire" as used by Christians means the wealth and power of secular governments as a force in opposition to God's kingdom. Secular Empire (think the Roman empire) uses power to crush and enslave the masses as opposed to God's kingdom, where the poor and marginalized are lifted up and helped to flourish.

    So yeah I agree that we shouldn’t become a theocracy. But both sides are heading in the same direction, away from God. The problem to me with this social justice obsession is conflating the Gospel of Jesus with this idea of justice. But whatever according to these guys there is no right or wrong, no objective truth, love it.

    • @Dachusblot
      @Dachusblot 2 місяці тому +4

      How is the Gospel of Jesus not about justice? Jesus's whole ministry was dedicated to uplifting the poor and marginalized, and bringing down the hypocritical religious leaders. Is this not social justice?

    • @username97112
      @username97112 2 місяці тому

      @@DachusblotBut the gospel of Jesus is not about justice. It’s about the opposite-mercy. We as sinners deserve justice (damnation), but Jesus says we are saved through him (mercy). That message gets lost when we conflate it with “social justice” which is not wrong inherently, but can be because it is 100% determined by humans and not God.
      I think the person is just saying that the two messages, while there can be overlap, should not be thought of as interchangeable.

    • @Dachusblot
      @Dachusblot 2 місяці тому +1

      @@username97112 Well, but you are using the word "justice" in two different ways, though. Conflating justice with damnation means using the word in the sense of "punishment for a crime." But when people talk about social justice, that's not what it means. It means lifting up the downtrodden, welcoming the marginalized, tearing down the powers of oppression. And those are all things Jesus did in his life and clearly expected his followers to do as well. He welcomed tax collectors and prostitutes into his fold. He healed the sick and fed the hungry. He criticized the religious leaders who placed oppressive burdens on other people. He said that those who call out his name but do not feed the hungry, clothe the naked, or visit the prisoners, never knew him and will be banished from God's sight. He told the rich young man that if he wanted to enter the kingdom of heaven, he had to sell everything he owned and give the money to the poor. I could go on and on.
      It's illogical to separate "social justice" from the definition of what it means to be a Christ-follower. The only reason why someone would want to do so is if they thought modern day social justice movements, which focus on showing love and acceptance to racial minorities, religious minorities, LGBTQ people, immigrants & abused women, or which seek for things like police reform, prison reform, environmental protection, more fair wealth distribution, mutual aid, etc, are somehow different from what Jesus was doing. But I don't see how they're different at all. I think it's fallacious to separate the work of social justice from the gospel message. They should go hand in hand.

    • @username97112
      @username97112 2 місяці тому

      @@Dachusblot That’s a fair point. Justice can be used in both ways.
      The original comment said “social justice” which again is determined by people, not God. Social justice encompasses many ideas about social issues that may or may not fall on the right side of God’s idea of justice. When you don’t make the distinction, one can convict you of violating man’s idea of injustice, when, in fact, you are aligned with God’s Word/the gospel of Jesus.
      This is why we mustn’t conflate the two. Again, there is overlap to be sure-but they are not wholly one and the same.
      Justice is not the whole of Christianity. It is one (important) part. When we make the two terms, justice and Christianity, equal and interchangeable, we preach a Christless, man made message. Christianity is about the love of and for Christ and his sacrifice made in love-completely.
