    Trailer! Build a Kayak trailer! Harbor Freight Kayak Trailer! Do's and Don'ts! Subscribe! In this video I walk you through the various different versions of my kayak trailer build. I explain what I did right, and what I did very wrong. If you are looking to build a kayak trailer on a budget this is the video for you! I built my kayak trailer with a Harbor Freight utility trailer for my Hobie Pro Angler 360 kayak.
    This kayak trailer can be used for every kayak out there. You may need to make a few adjustments depending on your kayak but this general layout will work for whatever you have.

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    Thank you for putting this video together because there's always something new to learn from the community. I'm about to send my latest trailer build off to powder coat, and I'll certainly be adding the Curt coupler you mentioned. I would suggest replacing your current tongue extension with a 2x3x0.125 wall tube and install it on top of the tongue plate. Consider going with 3/16" plate for the top tongue plate for rigidity and extend the new tongue all the way back to the main frame of the bed. This will create a rigid frame connection and eliminate the spring in the tongue. If you need custom cnc cut plates for this then let me know because I can supply those pretty easily. I'd like to talk more about your setup and help out where I can.

The correct bearing buddy model number is the 2047-SS which is 2.047". I got mine from a guy on eBay, username everything_trailers. He had the best price and shipping was fast.

      I tell ya what, I’ve actually rebuilt this again and just haven’t done the video quite yet because it’s not quite ready. The newest version has the wood floor again (lol). I carpeted it and I back it right into the water. You can seal the plywood to make it last longer but I chose to just get cheap wood and cheap carpet, and I’ll replace it as needed every few years or however long. The new version of the trailer will be very visible in a video coming on Saturday at 6:00 AM!

    Is it better to upgrade the tires to something bigger or does the stock tires do just fine?

    • @PenguinOutdoors
      @PenguinOutdoors  7 місяців тому

      The stock tires gave me three years of service, but….upgrade them to bigger ones. I am finishing up a trailer update video now. I put 15’s on it and I can tell you it makes a WORLD of difference in ride quality, gas mileage, and takes you from a 50mph rating to 85.

  • @miketaylor7064
    @miketaylor7064 Рік тому +1

    Why not extend the tongue back to the main part of the frame, I think it would make it stronger and that would probably cure your bouncing.

    • @PenguinOutdoors
      @PenguinOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      Extending it back to the frame wouldn’t have solved the bouncing. The issue is the tube itself flexes at that length not flexing because of the attachment point. In order to stay that long beyond the front of the trailer I would have needed to step up to a 2 inch tube with thicker walls. Which may happen down the road but to stick with the size it already had the only solution was to shorten it. Thanks for watching!

    I have the same Harbor Freight trailer. Instead of welding on a new tongue do you think a hitch extender work?

    • @PenguinOutdoors
      @PenguinOutdoors  Рік тому

      Depends on the specifications of what you are towing with. My hitch is class 3 but I'm towing with a sedan. While the car is more than capable of towing you have to be mindful of the stress, tongue weight, etc. I have much more confidence in a longer tongue welded to the frame of the trailer than an extension to the hitch.

    • @jube42
      @jube42 Рік тому +1

      @@PenguinOutdoors So I pull mine with a ford Expedition King Ranch. I am having the same issue with backing it down into the water without having to dang near put the exhaust in the water to get it off. I've looked at some extensions that would give me alot more clearance but I was wondering about the stability and possible flex they could cause.

    • @PenguinOutdoors
      @PenguinOutdoors  Рік тому

      @@jube42 So here is my plan because I saw another guy on a website blog do it, and it worked well for him. I'm going to have a 2 inch, thick steel tube that is 2-3 feet longer welded to a new custom a frame plate and weld that on the trailer like this one is. That will take care of the flex and distance issue. The only reason my last extension flexed is it wasn't thick or large enough.

  • @dakotamurphy225

    • @PenguinOutdoors

      @Rick-of2bw Рік тому

      You can be pulled over and cited for that and you better hope you don't have an accident on the highway because you will be held liable for an unsafe trailer.

    • @PenguinOutdoors
      @PenguinOutdoors  Рік тому

      @@Rick-of2bw Pulled over and cited for what, exactly? For starters this is not an unsafe trailer and has thousands of miles on it. Secondly there is nothing wrong with making changes to a trailer. And lastly you may be unaware of this but it's actually legal to even make a trailer completely from scratch which would be far more custom and involved than anything shown here in this video. My trailer is both legal and safe, your comment is completely off base. As for an accident on the highway I hope on a daily basis to never have one. I don't think anyone goes out with hope of having one lol.

    • @Rick-of2bw
      @Rick-of2bw Рік тому

      If you Google how fast you can tow a harbor freight trailer you'll find the speed limit is 45 mph , that specified limit is there for a reason !

    • @dakotamurphy225
      @dakotamurphy225 Рік тому +1

      @Rick-of2bw bearing upgrade and new tires will solve that.. they also make those ratings with a safety net and the worse condition possible so they don't get sued. Bias tires explode when to much heat is present so a simple tire upgrade can solve that issue if your not comfortable with the stock tires.
