    If a batted ball hits a runner the runner is out. If he's hit by a thrown ball he's not out and the play continues (unless he obviously tries to get in the way of the thrown ball). There is a rule about being hit by a thrown ball while running to 1st base ie a bunt fielded by the catcher that if the runner is in fair territory it's interference and the batter/runner is out. That's why there's the extra line in foul territory going to 1st base (ever notice it?) The runner needs to be "between" those to lines or at least to the foul side then there's no interference. Quiz on Friday.

      1 caveat to the baserunner being hit by a batted ball. If the runner is standing in foul territory he is not out.

      Small addition to this. A runner is only out when hit by a batted ball before an infielder has a chance to make a play on it. For example, if the infield is playing in, and the ball hits a runner after it passes an infielder, the runner is not out and play continues

    • @jimasbury3220

      If the runner is out on his way to a base and is hit by a thrown ball the next runner is ALSO out due to interference .

    • @psymar
      @psymar 6 місяців тому

      @@jimasbury3220Only if it was intentional. This is even true on the way to first base. I remember a recent play where fielder went to the outside of first base to receive the throw, the runner therefore went inside to avoid interfering... and the throw went inside and hit him. Umps correctly ruled no interference since he was clearly trying to avoid getting hit.

    HERS IS 101 BASEBALL LESSON on "FORCED" state of offensive players on bases. The term "FORCED state" only applies to the offecsive players which DOES ONLY the BIG FAVOR to the defensive team. So when the runner is being forced . It makes the JOB VERY QUITE EASY for the defensive players.
    Here is an example of a typical TRIPPLE PLAY. A batter is in the batter box and 2 runners are on each 1st and 2nd bases. Offensive team's outcount is 0. The 2nd base runner is being FORCED from the 1st base runner leaving him only choice to RUN to the 3rd base.
    And the 1st base runner is being FORCED from the batter leaving him only choice to RUN to the 2nd base. BECAUSE these two runners are being forced, after the batters produces a ground infiend ball the 3rd baseman picks up the ball from the dirt LUCKILY near the 3rd base with a good ball VELOCITY and can easily step on the 3rd base to AUTOMATICALLY KILL the 2nd base runner (this case the 3rd baseman do not need to TAG him at all= EASY KILL) as soon as the 3rd baseman makes the 1st kill he throws the ball quickly to the 2nd baseman(shortstop or 2nd baseman) whose foot(any part of his body) being on the 2nd base firmly to make the 2nd AUTO kill who then quickly throws the ball to the 1st baseman whose foot(or any part of his body firmly on the 1st base) to make the 3rd kill making the TRIPLE PLAY. Easier way to understand is the concept of being "Forced" is that when the bases are EMPTY and the batter is only being force to run to the 1st base after making a ground ball but he is normally easily OUT on the 1st base as long as the infielders do not fuck up.
    Confusing part is sometimes defensive players are forced (conversly) to only TAG runners to KILL them. This is when the runner is relievd from FORCED state. Let's imagine there is a runner on the 1st base only and there is a batter in batter box. The batter hits the ball making a ground ball toward near the 1st base so the 1st baseman picks up the ball and steps on the 1st base to automatically KILL the batter(because the batter is ONLY in FORCED state and not there yet) but interestingly AS SOON AS the batter is called OUT by the 1st base judge the 1st BASE RUNNER who was running towards the 2nd base immediately BECOMES "UNFORCED" leaving him choices to keep running to 2nd base OR even COME BACKS to the 1st base to SURVIVE (Normally he would run to the 2nd base because it is very NATURAL instict of the runner) because NOW the defensive infielders are instictively thanks to their lifttime baseball experinces and training that the 1st base runner is NOW switched to UNFORCED state from the FORCED the 1st baseman throws the ball to the 2nd base coverman(normall either shortstop or 2nd baseman - whomever is closer and more efficient by the choice of thrower and the receiver) whose foot is not NECESSARILY on the 2nd base but tries to FOCUS on TAGGING him. This is not easier for the defensive players to execute due to TAGGING is forced but given the sitution it is easier for them to execute this converse double play BECAUSE there is no time for the ball to make a round way trip from the near 1st base to the 2nd base and back to 1st base to make two FORCED OUTS. One other easy example of SWITCH from FORCE to UNFORCED is when a batter(no base is loaded) hits a ground ball in the outfield area with a possible double situation the batter is FORCED from batterbox to 1st base but as soon as he passes the 1st base towards the 2nd base he becomes UNFORCED state leaving him two choices either to advance to 2nd base or give up and comes back to 1st base. The defensive players know it naturally so their tactic is now TAG PLAYS from FORCED PLAYS.
    There is another FORCED SITUATION for the runners on bases. They are only allowed to RUN to the next bases only when the batted ball drops on the FAIR ground. If the ball is caught by any infielder or outfielder THEY are FORCED to come back or stay put on their current bases. But sometimes hitted balls make nice line-drive seemingly where the runners ARE convined to RUN by their own judgement that the ball would hit the ground so they can advance more distance to even make to the home to produce RUNs however it turns out the balls are caught by super nice defensive catches making it almost impossible for the runner to undo the running and rushing back to their original bases, That is why there are unassited double plays and very RARELY triple plays.
    There is one final thing about TAG UP. Tag up is when the ball pops up in the air traveling deep in the outfield but seemingly obvious by the runners that the ball is probably going to get caught by the defensive outfileder they'd come back to their bases stay put but instead they may do "on your mark" to themselves and as soon as the ball is caught they RUN like splinters to the next base(or home plate). This is called TAG UP. This play is normally executed by fast runners but if the ball travels deep enough evn large runner can tag up from 3rd base to home plate giving the traveling distance of the ball is pretty much the same direction to the home plate which is farthest from throwers perspectives. The defensive outfielders then are challenged by the tagged up runners to test their robust shoulder and accuracy of there throw. Of couse the runner in this case obviousl is not FORCED so the recieiving defensive players(normally catchers) make the perfect STRIKE CATCH and TAG him out in time. This is why this KILLING action on home plate is ART of defensive play of baseball that is even recorded to outfielders statistics for evaluation called "Assist". Base runners unless the ball is deep enough while the outfileder is notorious with lots of assists normally do not dare to challenge easily because if he fucks up it would give the opponent team a doulbe play making their morale go high.
    So I hope you now kinda understood why the heck some times the defensive plays seem to MUST TAG while they some times do not even TAG to kill the offensive players. I know all this with not much difficulties because I used to live on the baseball ground when I was young. But I find it very difficult to explain to my girlfreind simply because it seems incredibly difficult for her to understand the principle of FORCED and UNFORCED situation when she has such obvious face of not giving a shit. I know is a long READ but thanks for reading it.

    I've been told - don't know this for sure - that on those really close plays at first base, the umpire is looking at the bag so he can see exactly when the runner's foot touches. However, that means he can't see the precise moment the ball enters the first baseman's glove, instead he listens to HEAR the ball hit the fielder's glove. And that's how he knows which arrived first.

    This is why some of the best teams typically have elite fielders at SS, 2B, and to a lesser extent, 3B. Double plays can make a huge difference in a game's momentum. Somebody else already said, some of the best fielders at these positions played in time periods when the footage is not that great, so we don't have some of their best plays (guys like Ozzie Smith).

    "I wonder if they've ever hit the runner." Once when I was a kid I was playing second base. The ball was hit to the first baseman, whose cousin was a baserunner on first for the other team, and something of a braggart. The first baseman stepped on the bag for the first out, then turned to throw it to me for the tag out on his cousin. Seeing what must have looked like a big target on his back, the first baseman's eyes widened and he got an evil grin, then threw the ball as hard as he could right at the middle of the cousin's back. He screamed and fell down, writhing in agony. I walked casually over, picked up the ball, and tagged him out for the double play.
    Ahhh... memories.

    As kids we are taught by coaches that before each pitch you should consider the possibilities and what you will do. Hard ground ball to me--what are my choices given the number of outs, the speed of the runner. Or, if it goes to the shortstop (or first base, or third, or pitcher, or the outfield) and I am second base what I need to do given again how hard it is hit--what is my responsibility--which base to cover, which to back up in case of a wild throw, etc. Consider what to do before each pitch. Infielders typically have responsibilities for where to position themselves wherever the ball is hit, so you need to be thinking before the pitch. It was a fun game to play, but not easy if you were a daydreaming kid!

    At 8:24, because the first baseman came off the bag to field the ball and make the throw home, the second baseman came over to first base to take the throw for the second out. A double play wouldn't have been possible without that.

  • @gregcable3250
    @gregcable3250 6 місяців тому

    If you as a base runner are hit by a thrown ball you are safe and the ball is in play wherever the ball rolls to--which is why there are rules regarding how off line you can run between bases--umpires will call you out if you go "out of the base line". Conversely, if you are hit by a batted ball when off base you are out (unless you are touching base then you are safe and the ball is live and in play, again, wherever it goes--you can take your chances to advance if you think you can make it).

    The thing that also makes it difficult when someone is sliding at you they will take your legs out from under you so you have to ignore that and make the throw. In my high school days in the early 2000’s it was a technique some teams used if you knew you were going to be thrown out at least try and take out the person throwing the ball. Had it done to me a few times and straight up not a good time 😂😂😂

  • @psymar
    @psymar 6 місяців тому

    The thing is that by the time the ball is hit, you really should already know where to throw it if it comes to you -- you figure that out before the pitch is even thrown. Sometimes it depends on if the runner gets a good jump off the base, but even then you know what to do depending on if they did or didn't.

    However, if a batter hits a runner with a batted ball the runner is out.
