What’s really nice abt this is that this ends with some positive news, Esteban stopped himself from being involved in the drug ring which is tough, seeing as most people from Tijuana are already involved in gangs and cartels due to the environment around them. Esteban’s now a coach for a Mexican team and he’s been an assistant in the bullpen who’s team is doing really well right now

@@mattforbes221 that’s just the way it is down in Mexico, this is coming from a kid who’s been to Mexico a lot, who has parents from puebla (that’s a very gang effected area in mexico) and has heard stories from my parents. This isn’t coming from a white kid who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Trust me bro, gang pressure is a big issue in mexico in its entirety.
@@jongar6672 hey I totally believe you, I just think word choice is important here. “Significant gang pressure” is different than “most people are in gangs,” and I think the latter wording can feed false, bigoted impressions certain folks have about Mexico and Central America as a whole.

Met him at a mall during ST one day. Very nice guy, we were probably 15. Engaged with us when we only asked for an autograph. A 1 minute interaction lasted at least 10. He was a CWS.
And yes, I was expecting a Michael Young cameo in this video, because every time I hear about Loaiza, I remember that glorious trade.

Great video brother. After he got out of jail he wanted to get a fresh start, giving pitching clinics to kids in Mexico, then in 2023 got a job as assistant Pitching Coach of El Aguila de Veracruz (a team in the Mexican league, which is the same team Yasiel Puig played in 2021)
Loaiza's 2003 is even more remarkable than what's given here. His 2.90 ERA over 226.1 IP nets him 43 earned runs saved over what an average pitcher would've done in the same work load. That puts it within the top 200 pitching seasons in MLB history.
To put in perspective, Gerrit Cole's Cy young season this year was exactly 40 earned runs saved.

@@nickrockway472 In doing the research for that stat, I saw his name pop up as one of the best pitching seasons of the 2000s and I had never heard of him before. Sometimes random people just put up huge seasons. A sub 3.00 ERA when the league ERA is close to 5.00 is huge.
He also had more k's than Halladay despite pitching something like 40 innings less, along with a much lower ERA

As a Rangers fan I was well aware of Esteban Loaiza's role in helping bring Michael Young to Texas, so I was fully expecting the cameo. I had also seen him pitch for the Washington Nationals, and he even signed an autograph for me after the game despite getting out-pitched by Jake Peavy. I never forgot that kind gesture, so it was sad to see all of his legal issues after his retirement.
There were numerous teams to complete a reverse sweep after being down 3-0. One of the recent teams was the Philadelphia Flyers when they went the distance to win their Eastern Conference Semifinal in 2010 against the Boston Bruins.

It’s happened 4 times in NHL history, but only the one time in ‘04 across the other 3 major NA sports leagues.
@@SurgingSpecs Probably has something to do with NHL games being 1-0 or 2-1 or 1-1, whereas the other 3 NA sports leagues have much larger scoring differentials. Probably also one more reason why Hockey isn't as popular as the NFL or NBA, and why I wish they'd move the pitching mound back 10 feet and a HBP should send the batter to 2nd base instead of 1st. Games are objectively more exciting when there are bigger scores.
@@SconnerStudiosHockey is also the most "luck-reliant" sport of the big 4. Bad and fluke goals happen all the time, and goalies randomly have the best streak of play of their life. The difference between luck in hockey vs baseball is that you need to chain together lucky happenings in baseball (fluke hits) for it to show up on the scoreboard, while luck is the difference between a goal or not in hockey.
As a result hockey is a sport that creates a ton of upsets. 8th seeds upset 1st seeds far more than in basketball for example.
Hockey has other reasons for being less popular, one of them being that its not a very democratic sport. It's by far the most expensive of the four to play recreationally, and the most regional given the need for ice.
@@SconnerStudios well in football it can't happen obviously. in basketball teams often have huge advantages in a series. in baseball and hockey you rarely see a team more than -200 to win a series. so it's way less likely to happen in basketball for that reason.
now look at the playoff formats- baseball has always had less playoff teams than the nhl. baseball only has three best of seven series per year, the LCS and World Series. Hockey has 15 best of seven per year since they have 4 rounds of playoffs and all four are best of 7. when you have five times as many series, and it's a sport where similar to baseball nobody has that big of an edge you should see more crazy comebacks.
hockey has had 15 best of 7 series since the 1986 and baseball has had 3 best of 7 series since 1985.

As a Royals fan I remember him as a stud pitcher for the White Sox. Some of those Sox teams were absolutely stacked back in the day. I actually didn’t know he got busted for that though. Crazy stuff

We still love the guy in Tijuana; still goes and support little league, played softball and baseball with his old friends.
Another Chicago standout from 2003 whose career took a difficult (albeit not criminal) turn is Mark Prior. In 2003, Prior went 18-6, with a 179 ERA+ over 211 IP, the best FIP in the NL, 245 K to 50 walks, and finished 3rd in Cy Young voting - and all this at the age of 22. At the time, Prior was thought to have "perfect" pitching mechanics. But the injuries started to pile up, and after pitching just 43.2 IP at age 25, Prior was out of MLB. He'd try to make comebacks all the way to 2013, but it didn't pan out. A guy who was being compared to Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens ended up pitching just 657 innings.

Can I just say the fact that Michael Young isn't in the Hall of Fame is an absolute disgrace
He didn't play long enough and didn't add enough defensive value. If he played 3-4 more quality years to build some counting stats or was a Chase Utley/Dustin Pedroia/Keith Hernandez quality defensive player, he'd be a HOF'er. I think his WAR is only like 20 something.
He had 2400 hits though. I don't know how he managed to get a gold glove because obviously his value was 99% bat 1% glove, and frankly, it's crazy he wasn't made a doubles hitting DH instead of thrown in the field.
Loved watching Michael young but I don't know if his career is all that different from Nick markakis
@@TheGilchrist707 Michael Young's WAR is actually lower. Shows how we look at baseball differently now. 30 years ago, Michael Young probably would have been a serious hall of fame candidate due to being a perennial all star with a batting title.

Loaiza was the man. He was overshadowed while on the south side by the Cubs finally making the playoffs & the whole Bartman thing. Wish he would have stayed on the Sox longer.
Interesting fact about Steve that most people don't know. He was a catcher before he started pitching in highschool, at Mar Vista Highschool. My grandfather and father were the coaches that converted him into a pitcher. I actually spent a lot of time around him as a kid, and still have a glove he used in a MLB game, a game ball, and a signed rookie card. The last time I saw him, was at my grandfather's funeral, quite a few years ago. It's sad that he got caught up in the things he did, in the end.

Interesting fact, it's because of his DUI in Oakland, alcohol was banned in the clubhouse.

He actually briefly unretired to pitch semi professionally in summer 2016 at 45 as a player-coach in a league mostly occupied by Mexican college players
He threw me a ball from the Wrigley Field bullpen when he was with the Nationals. Even as a Cubs fan, I missed him when he left the Sox!

I went to the white Sox fan festival and had a picture with Esteban about two weeks before he was arrested.
My dad got his last autograph at the Sox Fest before the feds got him.
Wasn't it said in the 04 ALCS after Game 4 at some point, I forget when, that Joe Torrre and the Yankees could go to either Félix Heredia or Esteban Loaiza, and the Yankees had lost confidence in both of them, or am I remembering that wrong. Joe Buck made a point to mention it during the ALCS, IIRC it was Game 6 before Esteban came in, though I may be misremembering that a bit.

Loaiza never had a team nor did he play with the biggest variety of teams. But I find his trajectory interesting.
As bad as the White Sox fans have had it, I’d argue that Seattle Mariners fans have had it worse. Given that the Mariners have never even been to a WS, let alone won one. Plus the 21 year playoff drought, it’s hard to beat.

So when I was a kid, 9-10 years old I used to just create depth charts and lineups of what I thought was the best in baseball. Aka, my fav players. Esteban Loiza, if for only because he's got one of the best names of all time. So fun to say. Was consistently my 3rd or 4th starter behind Big Unit and the D Train. Sucks he had to turn out such a gross person. But he's a fond memory of my childhood
