Another common theme over the centuries involves the hubris of the followers of a certain religion in a certain part of the world. Just move this history lesson from the 18th century Barbary Coast to the 21st century Red Sea and it's very obvious that nothing has changed in that part of the world except the technology now being used to commit their barbary.

In the early days of the US, the second place candidate became vice president. This was always the person from the other party. Which is why Jefferson ran against Adams almost immediately. For many years both men despised each other, but they ended up reconciling in their old age and both men died on the same day July 4, 1826. The 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence which Jefferson wrote and Adams edited.
There were no "political parties" in the first election under the Constitution. It was a forgone conclusion that Washington was going to be POTUS under the new government. They asked John Adams, one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence and leaders during the Revolution to serve as VP. HELL, JEFFERSON WAS SECRETARY OF STATE. In fact, Washington in his farewell address stated "However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion." Washington was against political parties
Jefferson and Adams served in Washington's administration. It was Jefferson's dislike for Hamilton and some of the policies that favored New England industries implemented by Adams that pushed Jefferson to run.

One of the ships that was a part of this is still around today. The USS Constitution which is the oldest floating commissioned warship in the world. I was aboard a few years ago and got a flag flown on the ship and a cool metal coin thing. The ship really is worth a visit if you are in Boston. The ship scared a British vessel into backing down from a fight and it managed to completely disable a British ship in battle without taking any damage. The cannonballs shot at it bounced off the sides doing no damage leading to its nickname Old Ironsides.
There are plenty of books about the wars of 1812. There was the War in Europe against Napoleon that kept the British more concerned than fighting a minor war with the US over the invasion of York in Ontario Canada. In 1814 with the defeat of Napoleon the British freeded troops that were sent to the East Coast of the US. The British entered Washington burned several federal governments buildings and burned down the White House. Also continued to the port of Baltimore and attacked Ft. McHenry where the National Anthem was written during the battle.
The British Royal Marines burned most of DC but left the official house of the Commandant of the Marine Corps alone (US Marines are descended from the BRM) out of respect.
Now, the US vice president is chosen as a running mate with the presidential candidate. That is a relatively recent innovation. Originally, the vice president was the person who came in second place for the presidential election. Of course, this meant that the president and VP were usually political opponents. This was.... awkward.
You should research the Battle of New Orleans, the last battle of the War of 1812 - actually fought AFTER the war was over. General Andrew Jackson commanded an American force composed by of soldiers, Cajuns and pirates (pirates are ok when they’re on our side) defeat the British army.
To me, this is one of the Marines three greatest triumphs. Along with Guadalcanal and 1 division of Marines essentially fighting the entire Chinese Red Army for 8 months.
Okay, the deal with the president and the vice president back when America was founded was that the loser of the previous election became vice president so essentially you had the presidents opposition as vice president. It was only later that they chose a running mate to become vice president alongside their president.
The whole nine yard actually is derived from a phase fighter pilots in WW2. The amount of rounds held in the wings were on a belt feed design, which we laid out flat measured 9 yards so to give them the whole nine yards initially meant that a fighter pilot had fired all his rounds at an enemy.
The War of 1812 was when our Star Spangled Banner was written. Theres another song about the War of 1812 called, The Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. Its satirical song , the lyrics are quite funny. Check it out.
We fired our guns but the British kept a-comin There wasn’t quite as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they began to runnin Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico Yeah, They ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles They ran through the bushes where a rabbit wouldn’t go They ran so fast that the hounds couldn’t catch ‘em Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
If you notice, the Navy was formed in 1794 to combat the Algerian pirates. He completely missed that in 1790 Alexander Hamilton as the Secretary of the treasury passed a bill to form the Revenue Cutter Service (which was later renamed to US Coast Guard). The purpose was the fight the pirates in the Caribbean because they were attacking our boats. Washington already had a template when the Navy was created.
As a Marine I can tell you one thing: It doesn't matter how many planes, tanks, or infantry the US has. The favorite branch of the US military has always been and will always be the Navy.

26:16 Remember, the USS Philadelphia burned down, so the pirate king got the US to both stop kicking their ass, turn over the captured pirate city, AND pay them tribute of $60k(Around $2m USD today) without really giving up anything, because to get the ship back, they'd have to dig it up from the bottom of the bay.
This is where reading more than the headline would help. While Nato was formed in APRIL of 1949 (april 4th to be specific) which is 14 months before then June 25th official start of the korean war, it really didn't have any form in the first few years. It wasn't until SHAPE was established in 1951 when NATO had even standardized their equipment, or passed resolutions allowing them to deploy/station foreign troops on european soil. NATO's formation and it's foundation was a whole decade long endeavor. Also if we want to be super pedantic, the korean war didn't end, it almost ended with the Panmunjom Declaration, but as of today, that declaration has been suspended so no peace treaty has ever been signed and no victor has been declared for the korean war.
Prior to passage of the 12th Amendment in 1803, whomever received the most votes was President, and the runner-up was Vice President. So, Thomas Jefferson actively campaigning against John Adams isn't surprising, as they had always been political rivals.
The Barbary wars were not exactly the US’s strongest showing in a war. Basically the entire point was to stop piracy along the coast of Africa except it didn’t exactly work out. The problem was we didn’t actually have a real navy at the time and hence we knew nothing about sailing. The battles were fierce just when we did kill a well known pirate captain it wouldn’t matter as another infamous pirate would take their place in quick succession. It was a revolving door of pirates and it just wouldn’t stop. Literally it went on for four years before America withdrew from the area and found a much better route to get cargo to where it needed to go. Basically we left the Barbary coast alone and the pirates never bothered again. Literally it shoot a few guns withdraw and do it again at every battle.
Except we did get agreements and concessions at the end. Plus the Barbary states faded into history because the US inspired everyone else to fight back.

We ended up paying tribute cause Yusuf was gonna retreat to a palace in the middle of the desert with the american prisoners. Attacking this forttress. We had no way to bring artillery to that site and not nearly enough marines to get the job done. Let alone supply them deep in the desert. This also meant we went back on our deal with Yusuf's brother and left him high and dry.

This is the main lesson in Marine Corps Boot Camp history class. Presley O'Bannon and his Mamaluke sword and all that.
As an American even we don’t know why we get so mad about our boats. But we do. Just don’t touch the boats 😂😂
We love our boats!
They are our boats. No one gets to touch our boats. Why would we let anyone mess with our boats?
Idk why but I'm thinking of that scene from finding Nemo where they're all scared and say oh no he touched the butt.
Probably because the boats was out ticket here when we fled from Britain
@@MentalMeds that's actually a really good point. Didn't think of that lol

That seems to be a common theme over the centuries. Dont mess with American boats. 🤣🤣

The names of some of those boats have been passed on to our ships today. Like the Big “E” Enterprise in WWII. Also for you Brits on space ship Apollo 15 was named after your Captain Cook’s ship Endeavour. Even spelling it your way in Cook’s honor.
This story would make an amazing Limited Series to watch.

In fact, Washington in his farewell address stated "However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."
Washington was against political parties
Jefferson and Adams served in Washington's administration. It was Jefferson's dislike for Hamilton and some of the policies that favored New England industries implemented by Adams that pushed Jefferson to run.
It's amazing because these people live in immortal in city names so across america. I didn't know that Decatur was someone until this though. So many of our cities are still born from the greats only a couple hundred years ago
Really, you didn't know who Decateur was. Didn't they teach history to you guys.
I knew the story. We learned about it in American History. I am sure I learned about Decatur, but since I am 82 years old, that was a LONG time ago and I guess I had forgotten.
I actually live on Decatur st.
@2:45 And that's why you watch his ad reads. Believe me. I dislike some ad reads also. Love you guys! Have fun and stay safe on your trip!
America was a new nation in the world, it had to do something like this to secure the respect it thought it deserved.
History lesson to teach your kids. Stand up to bullies or they will keep being bullies. Always hit 10x harder and never give up.
Our first war as a country ended up almost overthrowing a country… then go back to threaten it years later. 😁foreshadowing😁
Now, the US vice president is chosen as a running mate with the presidential candidate. That is a relatively recent innovation. Originally, the vice president was the person who came in second place for the presidential election. Of course, this meant that the president and VP were usually political opponents. This was.... awkward.
Sounds like a political disaster. Can you imagine how that would work now? They would be at each other's throats.
it's not "relatively recent" it was the put in before the 1804 election, the 5th presidential election in US history.
You should research the Battle of New Orleans, the last battle of the War of 1812 - actually fought AFTER the war was over. General Andrew Jackson commanded an American force composed by of soldiers, Cajuns and pirates (pirates are ok when they’re on our side) defeat the British army.
This is what happens when the orders are vaguely remembered as "go there and break stuff if anyone looks at you funny."
I mean, we couldn't have done it without France, but the pirate nations didn't need to know that!!
It took place along the Barbary coast is why it's named the Barbary wars.
To me, this is one of the Marines three greatest triumphs. Along with Guadalcanal and 1 division of Marines essentially fighting the entire Chinese Red Army for 8 months.

I always enjoy these.
I DO like it when the brits tell us we're doing a good job.

That Barbary Coast episode where they formed the United States Navy is actually on Death Valley Days.

You should do the one on the “angry old man takes on 700 red coats”
Okay, the deal with the president and the vice president back when America was founded was that the loser of the previous election became vice president so essentially you had the presidents opposition as vice president.
It was only later that they chose a running mate to become vice president alongside their president.
That electrician guy is a funny dude.
The whole nine yard actually is derived from a phase fighter pilots in WW2. The amount of rounds held in the wings were on a belt feed design, which we laid out flat measured 9 yards so to give them the whole nine yards initially meant that a fighter pilot had fired all his rounds at an enemy.
Nic, I'm from San Diego living in Spain. Nothing but Brits and Spanish.. I showed this episode at pub.. Killed it brother.. I love history.

Decatur was a serious badass. Ended stupidly in a ridiculous duel with an completely unworthy opponent. But still a badass.
The War of 1812 was when our Star Spangled Banner was written. Theres another song about the War of 1812 called, The Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. Its satirical song , the lyrics are quite funny. Check it out.

Thats why you need good leadership that can think on their feet, just remember no plan ever survives contact with the enemy
Interesting fact the president didnt always get to pick there vice back in the day, it was the secound runner up who became vice president
Marine Corps Hymn has the phrase “to the shores of Tripoli” commemorating this.
As a Marine I can tell you one thing: It doesn't matter how many planes, tanks, or infantry the US has. The favorite branch of the US military has always been and will always be the Navy.
I think we should add a motto to our flag, " DO NOT FUCK W OUR BOATS!"

Thomas Jefferson and my seventh great grandad were fellow vestrymen.
I am glad that you took the note to watch it the whole way through TFE's videos. Cheers!
The 6 frigates were built to reduce damage from cannon balls. Many sailors were killed or injured from flying splinters.

The Barbary pirates were the territories of Northern Africa from Morrocco to Tripoli in the southern Mediterranean sea.
NATO was formed on June 4th 1949, more than 1 year before the start of the Korean War, which began on June 25th, 1950.
Hurrah for my favorite British couple reacting to another awesome video from my favorite American historian! 😀
