In the early days of our presidential elections, the winner became President, runner up became VP. Needless to say, they didn't often see eye to eye, and there was no official loyalty. So an election challenge by the VP was pretty much expected. Because of this, it was changed to loser goes home, winner picks their own VP, which stands to this day.

He said that the Mameluke sword was the sword used by the Marine Corps, and it's true for officers. The enlisted uses the cavalry sword style.
Another fact about the battle of Montezuma concerns the origin of the red stripe wore by Corporals and above. During the battle in Mexico City, all of the Corporals and above were killed, and the battle was continued and won by Lance Corporals and below. That's why the red stripe is referred to as the "Blood Stripe".

In the early days of the US, the second place candidate became vice president. This was always the person from the other party. Which is why Jefferson ran against Adams almost immediately. For many years both men despised each other, but they ended up reconciling in their old age and both men died on the same day July 4, 1826. The 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence which Jefferson wrote and Adams edited.

There were no "political parties" in the first election under the Constitution.
It was a forgone conclusion that Washington was going to be POTUS under the new government. They asked John Adams, one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence and leaders during the Revolution to serve as VP. HELL, JEFFERSON WAS SECRETARY OF STATE.
In fact, Washington in his farewell address stated "However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."
      Washington was against political parties

Jefferson and Adams served in Washington's administration. It was Jefferson's dislike for Hamilton and some of the policies that favored New England industries implemented by Adams that pushed Jefferson to run.

Now, the US vice president is chosen as a running mate with the presidential candidate. That is a relatively recent innovation. Originally, the vice president was the person who came in second place for the presidential election. Of course, this meant that the president and VP were usually political opponents. This was.... awkward.

There are plenty of books about the wars of 1812.
There was the War in Europe against Napoleon that kept the British more concerned than fighting a minor war with the US over the invasion of York in Ontario Canada.
In 1814 with the defeat of Napoleon the British freeded troops that were sent to the East Coast of the US. The British entered Washington burned several federal governments buildings and burned down the White House. Also continued to the port of Baltimore and attacked Ft. McHenry where the National Anthem was written during the battle.

One of the ships that was a part of this is still around today. The USS Constitution which is the oldest floating commissioned warship in the world. I was aboard a few years ago and got a flag flown on the ship and a cool metal coin thing. The ship really is worth a visit if you are in Boston. The ship scared a British vessel into backing down from a fight and it managed to completely disable a British ship in battle without taking any damage. The cannonballs shot at it bounced off the sides doing no damage leading to its nickname Old Ironsides.

The War of 1812 happened largely (if I recall my US History correctly) because Britain was blockading ships from supplying France during Napoleonic Wars. Because France was helpful to the colonies in their war against Britain for our independence, we were helping Napoleon with supplies. So US declared war on Britain while Britain was engaged in a European war by attacking British strongholds in Canada. This provoked Britain into also attacking the US while simultaneously fighting France. It ended up being a war with no real winners or losers. The only thing it really did was show the US wasn't a push over. We beat the British once and held them off a second time, which at the time was the greatest military in the world.

    • @DemitriVladMaximov
      @DemitriVladMaximov 5 днів тому

It wasn't the blockade. It was that the British were taking US sailors and forcing them to serve in the British Navy in what was called impressment. The British refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of the US and the rights of US citizens.

The Barbary wars were not exactly the US’s strongest showing in a war. Basically the entire point was to stop piracy along the coast of Africa except it didn’t exactly work out. The problem was we didn’t actually have a real navy at the time and hence we knew nothing about sailing. The battles were fierce just when we did kill a well known pirate captain it wouldn’t matter as another infamous pirate would take their place in quick succession. It was a revolving door of pirates and it just wouldn’t stop. Literally it went on for four years before America withdrew from the area and found a much better route to get cargo to where it needed to go. Basically we left the Barbary coast alone and the pirates never bothered again. Literally it shoot a few guns withdraw and do it again at every battle.

A side note on John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. At that point in US history, the way it worked was that the winner of the election became President and the runner-up became Vice President. John Adams was a member of the Federalist party and Thomas Jefferson was a member of the Democratic-Republicans, who were formed as opposition. When Thomas Jefferson beat Adams in the next election, he was tied with Aaron Burr - there was a process for sorting through all of that, but it was a major headache. The 12th Amendment to the Constitution, passed a few years later, made the votes for President and Vice President separate.

He left out a couple of details, when Steven Decatur captured the flagship and took more than 400 pirate prisoners, he first went to Algiers and demands the treaty, at first he was refused, so during the night, Decatur took 100 of the prisoners, 20 sailors and 30 Marines and landed them on a beach outside the city where they chopped off the Prisoners heads, and left their bodies lying on the sand, and took their heads with them, the next day he again demanded the treaty and repayment and told him what happened to part of his pirate crew during the night, and IF the leader would not sign it, his crew would take the heads of the prisoners and dump them into the ocean, it was only then when the Algerian leader agreed and this is why Decatur got the first treaty, because along with what Decatur demanded, he also had to hand over the heads of the prisoners and reveal where the bodies were located, and the rest of the live prisoners, so when the time came for Tunis, they already heard about how Decatur mutilated fellow Muslims so that their souls would never know peace and not get their 72 virgins and river of honey, quickly signed the treaty as well, but the leader of Tripoli was having none of it, so that night Decatur took some of the marines and sailors ashore and captured a buch of Tripolian citizens, and had them tied up on their knees and on the beach and demanded the treaty and money again, when he said no, the first 50 were beheaded, and they got ready to behead another 50, but the leader of Tripoli I am guessing realized that Decatur was not playing his game, and agreed to the treaty and payment, and the remainder were released. I know that for "POLITICALLY CORRECTNESS" no one wants to talk about HOW Steven Decatur and his demands were so readily recieved the second time, seeing as the first time they had no problems with fighting, but DURING the war of 1812, Comodore Decatur, KNEW that he was going to have to finish up the unfinished business with the Barbary pirates at some point in time, and got his hands on a translated copy of the Koran, and read it so he could better understand how they think, and he learned the secret of how to expose their most feared weakness through their own religious book and teachings, and his second trip to deal with them, he used that knowledge to it's maximum effect, ever since the shot heard around the world, the United States has only been as strong as we are because he have always had men who are willing to do terrible things for fantastic reasons, most of these things get forgotten, a similar incident took place during the Philippine American war, where were once again fighting Muslim pirates in the Philippine jungles, when an Army general, called "Blackjack" Pershing, captured 50 of them, and taking a page out of Comodore Decatur's book, tied them to trees, killed and bled out 2 large pigs, had his men dip their ammo, bayonets, and swords into the pigs blood and chopped off the heads of 49 of them, while the one they made watch his friends get executed, then they stripped him naked, covered him with pigs blood and told him to return to his unit and tell them what their fate is going to be, they surrendured to General Pershing the next morning!
