No doubt. I saw Kansas live way back when, and it was definitely better than this performance. It was on the night of a blizzard, and the turnout was low. First thing they did was thank us for showing up. Great memories from that night.
@ I've always preferred the Two For The Show version. It was their original line-up live. Too bad there are no videos of it, but I believe there is a 1980 concert video on YT somewhere.

@@Sad-RockerI also went to a Kansas concert at the Kansas Coliseum in 1978. Much, much better than this version, but Kansas at its worst is better than 99% of other bands at their best!
Point of Know Return, Miracles Out of Nowhere, The Wall, Stay out of Trouble, People of the South Wind, A Glimpse of Home, Paradox, Portrait He Knew, Song For America. And thise are about 5% of what u should listen to.
Kerry Livgren developed the acoustic guitar part as a finger exercise he used to warm up at home. The first time he played his finger exercise in front of the band, they all said, "That's our next big hit!" The rest of the band worked on a melody, lyrics and the other parts (like the violin), and Dust In The Wind was born.
4of the original members did go to the same high school in Topeka, the other two came from Missouri and a different city in Kansas. Robbie Steinhardt only played the violin and tambourine along with vocals. The studio version may be clearer and more precise but this version is pure gold because you get Steve’s improv singing through the verses which is just angelic and you get that heavenly violin solo by Robbie at the end to close the song
Same, I think we all wanted to be in that world when we listened to this music. I was a kid when this came out, musically growing up in the 70's was as good as it will ever get.
Yes. It was Kerry livgren's wife. She felt so strongly that she called the band in the studio and told them Kerry is bringing a cassette of a song that he thinks nothing of. Im calling you bc the song is going to be a hit, and I know he won't play it unless I tell you about it. That song was "dust in the wind."
Thank you, Britt, for recognizing Kansas for the phenomenal band they are! My brother used “Dust in the Wind” to rock his baby daughter to sleep. Sadly, his daughter passed at 5 months old in 1978, and my brother passed away in 1987 at 30 years old. This song always makes me miss them, but happy to have had them as long as we did.
@ Thank you. I was 28 when Michael passed. We were extremely close, and this song always makes me feel him! I will continue to suggest “It’s Hard to be Humble” because it is a great song and because my father was friends with Mac Davis. Mac was such a funny and talented man!
As a musician, I'm so glad you pointed out what it is like to close your eyes and just listen. And I really like the way you put it: "Let your ears do the listening". ❤
Psalm 103:14 For he knows we are but dust 15 and that our days are few and brief, like grass, like flowers, 16 blown by the wind and gone forever. (from an old book I read)
Robby Steinhardt is the guy with the big hair playing the violin. I was lucky enough to see him in Clearwater Florida in the mid-90's. He made that part of Florida his home, and had formed his on small band called "Steinhardt Moon". I was a teenager in the 80's, so Kansas was fading on the charts about the time I was emersed in everything "80's". A co-worker of mine who was a bit older than me, was a teen in the 70's, and played in a high school band in Kansas City Missouri during the late 70's when the band Kansas was at their peak. His band played a LOT of Kansas songs at parties and small venues, etc... So, Kansas was one of his favorite all time bands. So we went to a local bar, small venue with a small stage, one Saturday night in Clearwater Florida, only about 100 people could crowd in the bar and Robby got up and started playing a collection of his own music, plus classic Kansas tunes. When he starting playing "Dust in the Wind", I looked over at my co-worker, and tears were coming down his cheeks. This was a man who never showed much emotion. But he was only about 20 feet from his high school rock God hero, and you could tell how much it meant to him. Great reaction. PTC indeed! :)
This song helped spark my interest in older girls when I was in the 5th grade. I had first heard it on the school bus and one of the high school girls sitting across the aisle was singing along as beautifully as she looked. It was instant CRUSH!!! It was my "Squints vs. Wendy Peffercorn" (The Sandlot 1993) moment. She became a Senior when I was in 7th grade and was an alto in the school choir, causing me to join as a baritone. Just so I could gaze upon her and hear her lovely voice. Of course nothing but a memory became of it. She graduated and moved away. Play the Game is another favorite of mine by Kansas.
I was out of the service when Kansas hit the scene I had moved back home and since they were only about 30 miles west I was just curious before I heard them sing. We had a lot of garage bands back then, but they were standouts. Then I bought all of their records.
When you go to a Kansas show, every person there knows every word to every song. I attended 2 shows back to back in the same night. One of my best nights ever!
The lead singer Steve Walsh in my opinion has one of the best male vocals of any classic rock band ! I will say this I follow about 15 people that do reactions including yourself and everyone has listened to dust in the wind and carry on my wayward son and boom stop right there ! One that tells me that all of you guys that do reactions kind of see what the other ones are doing you would have to !? Break out and be ahead of the pack and react to either 'the wall' or 'miracles out of nowhere' You will be impressed with both of those songs especially the lyrics ! They have such a deep catalog and to see 15 different reactors only listen to 2 of their songs and then stop is a crime actually ! When Steve Walsh left the band he started a solo career which was very successful with a lot of great songs one of his best is titled 'every step of the way' On your own time pull that last song I just mentioned up by Steve Walsh and give it a listen ! I don't know which will blow you away more his vocals are the saxophone ! And there's not just a little saxophone in that song there is a ton of saxophone in that song !
There is "Play the Game Tonight.' This as the band moved into the 80's and there was some member changes, specifically the singer. Actually saw them in approx. 1997 at the Naval Base in North Chicago. They played for a Big 4th of July Event.
Kansas made their debut performance at the valley heights high school prom in Blue Rapids Kansas 1971 way before my time but they did come back and do a concert outside of town 5 yrs ago which I did get to see Blue Rapids population is 1200 people so pretty cool to see them in a small town
I had the great pleasure of seeing Kansas live during the Leftoverture tour. The lead singer plays the keyboard. During the concert, he plays the keyboard while jumping around and kicking with incredible energy. Im glad you discovered Kansas, but im even happier that i saw them live.
It's cool that you got to see them younger, Britt. And just for yourself, I highly encourage you to check out the studio cut of this. I promise it will totally get under your skin and into your brain. Actually, there is a music video for it, which is great, and it is set to the studio track. And it shows Robby Steinhardt playing his violin and singing. ❤
I'm from Atlanta. Not sure about the entire band but some of em use to frequent a little bar, on Buford Hwy , called The Scuba Dub Pub. It was a combination bar/laundromat. Also the first place i ever had a Buffalo wing. Ate almost an entire hotel pan full.
Be sure to listen to the official studio video. The live performance doesn’t catch the ethereal beauty of the song. “Closet Chronicles,” “Nobody’s Home,” “Andi,” and “Back Door” are some deeper dives.
“ Lamplight Symphony” is one of their best, but probably best for a long listen rather than a reaction. It’s a story song, you have to listen to the whole thing.. “Cheyenne Anthem” is another story, with historical references.
4of the original members did go to the same high school in Topeka, the other two came from Missouri and a different city in Kansas. Robbie Steinhardt only played the violin and tambourine along with vocals
Check out "All I Wanted" and "Point of Know Return." Dust in the Wind appeared on the US Billboard charts for over 200 weeks. Great BAND AND they are still touring. 😀
Great reaction and assessment of Kansas! May I suggest the documentary Miracles Out of Nowhere. You'll hear snippets of many of their songs, but not enough to ruin a full reaction of each. And you'll gain some I sight into the band. Keep doing what you do, and I'll keep watching. Thanks Britt!
