Oh, it was definitely a radio hit! Trust me. I was 11 when it was released in 1973, since we couldn’t really afford much in the way of albums or concerts, the radio was the only place I heard it all through high school and college. And for those times I wanted to hear it when it wasn’t playing on the radio, I learned to play it on the guitar.
Linda Ronstadt's "Desperado" got more air play than the Eagles' version, and Don Henley credited her with making it popular. Her version came out in 1973 as the B-side to her single Colorado. Then on her album Don't Cry Now. It was played heavily on FM radio at the time.
I always thought of a desperado as a cowboy, who is running for the Mexican border to escape the lone ranger, lol. So the lyric that says he’s out riding fences fits right into that old west image.
This is why the EAGLES are the greatest American rock band. They are known for their incredible harmonies and incredible song writing. They sound just as amazing live as they are on their album. I have seen every concert tour that they have had since the 1986. Every concert is just as amazing as the first time time that I saw them.
I will NEVER understand these groups getting upset and blocking reaction videos! Don't they understand how many people may have never otherwise heard their music or even heard of THEM without these channels?! They should be thanking you all for the free publicity, for appreciating their music, and creating an entirely new generation of fans!
The Eagles are perfectionists in their music. I have been an Eagles fan for 50 years. I have seen them live 11 times. You want harmonies listen to more of their music!
The Eagles are so meaningful to me. Me and my father shared a love of this band and after his passing, the music still connects me to him to this day. This is such a beautiful song and Don Henley's voice being described as chill mountain air gave me goosebumps. More Eagles!!!!
The Melborn concert was a reunion concert for a fan base they had for too long neglected. They realized this after each had gone their separate ways years before, and felt a need to repay their greatest fans by giving them an exclusive reunion concert. A perfect example of their character as Human Being's. Good men all.
Thank you so much for reacting to my pick! ❤❤ The Eagles are one of my mums favourite bands and this song always makes me remember being a kid and relaxing with her at night with a hot chocolate and just talking and listening to good music just the two of us. I love getting to share this song with people and the Eagles are just great over all! Thanks again!!
Britt, Tequila Sunrise would be another great song to listen and react to! From the same venue and concert in Melbourne! Glenn Frey is the lead singer! The harmonies are great!
This is actually a Linda Ronstadt song, the song was written by Don Henley and Glen Fry who were both previously with Linda Ronstadt. Not only were they friends, but Linda was aware of them wanted to become serious songwriters. So Linda recorded the song for her album Don't Cry Now 1973, the same year as the Desperado album. Both were on the Asylum label, the label never released the song as single for either. But Linda performed the song regularly in concert and popularized the song (even garnering some radio play). Don Henley has even said that it's Linda song. It was because of Ronstadt popularizing the song, that it was included on the first Eagles Greatest Hits package.
According to Henley, "Desperado" was based on a song he started in 1968, written in the style of old songs by Stephen Foster.[4] The song was originally about a friend named Leo and with the opening line "Leo, my God, why don't you come to your senses. Although it was never released as a single, it became one of Eagles' best-known songs. It ranked No. 494 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", The piano introduction of the song is taken from Ray Charles' version of "Georgia On My Mind". According to an interview with Don Henley, "Desperado" was not a hit for the Eagles until Linda Ronstadt recorded it. It was written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. It was released in 1973. This performance appears to be in Melbourne Australia. It also looks like Don Hendly is the last of original band members.. It ranked No. 494 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time"
Eagles had a country / western flavor to them. Desperado was a cowboy wanted by the law. Witch woman was always one of my favorite Eagles song. A favorite Eagles song is sort of like picking your favorite candy.
They were Linda Ronstadt back band and she encouraged them to go out on their own. She made this song a hit and they sang it to honor her. Great reaction Britt!!!
One of my favorite radio hits and the reason i bought their desperado album when it came out. You know your reactions to these songs almost make me feel young again 😅
This was the title for the album Desperado. It wasn't a deep cut. That album sold over 2 million copies and was one of the biggest things on the radio when I was growing up in the 1970s Writer Logan Puissegar best described the meaning of this song. He writes "“Desperado” depicts a cowboy who refuses to fall in love. He is too busy on his high horse to “let somebody love him.” The song often relates to addicts, who let alcohol, drugs or other addictions hold them back from what they are called to. For Don Henley and the rest of the Eagles, the deeper meaning of the song portrays the stress of being a rock star, a recurring theme amongst their music. The life of a musician is very stressful. It includes suffering, and at times, loneliness". The queen of diamond depicts material things while the queen of hearts represents love. Material things will only leave us wanting more. Only love will fulfill us. While the word comes from the Latin meaning to despair or lose hope. I think it's talking more about letting pride get in the way of what is best for him.
Love, love love! The greatest rock band ever! My opinion. Great reaction. Glenn Frey and Merle Haggard died in the same year. I am still not over their passing.
@@dsusan17 They probably have almost as many hits as the Beatles! I think I can name more of their songs than the Be Beatles, and I'm a Beatles fan! They had been living in her basement, rent free. While on tour with Linda, they mentioned that they were writing songs for themselves - Linda felt they could be a success so she fired them (mid-tour!) - but didn't kick them out of the basement.
It's a wonderful song. If it gets blocked (or not) you could do Linda Ronstadt's cover. It's a 'better' song when sung by a woman anyway. This particular 'Desperado' spends his time 'riding fences'. Huge ranches would hire people to live out on the edges of civilisation in isolated cabins They could go months without even seeing another person. Often, when they finally did get into town they didn't know how to interact with others.
The Eagles Greatest Hits is the 3rd best selling album of all time with 45 million sold. This is on that album. All the songs weren’t big radio hits but they are very well known. This has been covered by many artists.
This was from the "Hell Froze Over" tour. After they broke up Don or Glen was asked if they would ever get back together again and he answered, "When Hell Freezes Over". I see reactors like the VJ's of MTV, and artists wanted their music to be seen and heard. Blocking doesn't make sense to me.

The Eagles never released Desperado as a single. Don Henley wrote it prior to he and Frey forming the Eagles. Linda Rondstat recorded it, and it was huge for her. I am so glad that you reacted to it. My first cassette was Eagles Greatest Hits 71-75, I played it every night when I went to bed, side 1, one night and side 2 the next. Desperado was the last song on side one. Growing up in the 70's we were still watching a lot of Westerns on TV so listening to the Eagles was part of all that. Cowboys, Ranchers and Outlaws, Eagles music and a 14 yr old imagination, what a combination. Eagles Greatest hits was certified 38 times platinum in 2018.
"Chicken soup for the soul" series of books were great. A similar book that I loved was "Everything I Really Needed to Know, I Learned In Kindergarten" pick up a copy if you can. It really makes sense.
This song always gets to me. My late wife told me that before we started dating that this song always reminded her of me. We were married for 23 years when she died at the age of 50 of cancer in 2019.
The Eagles were the most successful American Rock band and they hated each other. They broke up and each member recorded at least one award winning Album. Amazing, with the tightest harmonies.
You have to listen to Linda Ronstadt's version. You can only imagine! It wasn't a popular song w/ the Eagles until Ms Ronstadt sang it. Then it blew up w/ The Eagles. 🎵 Both versions are ICONIC! Love & peace! ❤✌🏼
The Eagles, Americas greatest band of all time...top selling band of the 70's, top selling album of the century over 200 million albums sold ..the crazy thing is they only made 7 studio albums..6 in the 70s 1 in 2008...cmon on thats insane. And now they r head lighting the Sphere...im blown away....greatness
Thank you for reacting to this ...that's my favorite band ....since high school and I'm 61 ....they used that song as an encore ...that's why he was sweating...also he's the drummer but he's been playing on fewer songs as the years have gone by
I am pleased to see that you are reviewing and reacting to the original Desperado. I suggest you listen to the Linda Ronstadt version, and you will be amazed! I would like to hear your reaction. There are no female vocalists like Linda today, and haven't been for 20-25 years. Go check her out yourself, and you will be utterly flabbergasted! Check out her outher songs, any of which are amazing. If you prefer the rock sound, then google Linda's rock songs (there are MANY - she was the Queen of Rock in the '70s and '90s). If you want to hear her just sing, I suggest starting out with Blue Bayou. She many many genres of music, including operetta, Standards, Mexican mariachi, light pop, and some near country. Also, Linda had the knack to cover other people's songs, and MAKE THEM HE OWN! You will see what I mean when you listen to her version of Desperado. Her version became the standard, and not the Eagles version.
In 1993, a tribute album to the Eagles was released, featuring covers of their greatest songs, by country artists. This one was covered by Clint Black, and he amped that soulful lonliness off the charts.
There was a local rock band around here back in the 70’s and every night the lead singer would do desperado all by himself… RIP Allan Lancaster! It was one of my favorite parts of their set!
Twenty years ago, I tried to get a video of Desperado on UA-cam. So you took a good choice. Best Eagles song, toppimg even Hotel California, onmy opinion.
Great reaction, Britt! 😊 Every track on the album of the same name is epic. It was just the group's second LP, but it quickly caught fire. One of my faves is "Saturday Night." ❤
This song has always meant so much to me. I was a desperado for most of my life, always choosing the "Queen of Diamonds".. I finally opened the gate, and Let somebody love me and my life is so much better for it. Though I've always loved the song, the true meaning of the song didn't hit me until I was in my 40s probably.
Don Henley’s voice is sooooo great. Saw him live in Perth Western Australia awhile back on a solo tour in which he sung this in a botanical garden under the stars, just awesome
Linda Ronstadt’s version of this song is stunning. Her live performance from 1977 is easily found and well worth watching. Eagles released this song to disappointing sales. A short time later Don Henley urged his friend, Linda, to cover the song. She turned it into a smash hit for both versions. 🌸💐✌️
This song was a number 1 hit but was before the time of music videos. I'm also pretty sure the green haired drummer was Deacon Frye. Son of the late Glenn Frye.
The lyrics to this great Eagles song always make me think of someone writing a letter to himself - a look in the mirror, if you will. ‘If you don’t change your ways, you will end up alone'… And this is one of the best lines in pop songwriting: And freedom, oh, freedom, well, that's just some people talkin' Your prison is walkin' through this world all alone
Desperado is an incredible album. Listen to Doolin-Dalton / Desperado Reprise with proper headphones. Glyn Johns was an incredible producer. Randy Meisner's backing vocals are the cherry on top.
When the Eagles came on the scene in '72, they filled or even added a niche, Folk music was changing with Croce' - Chapin - Stevens - Lightfoot and others, Black Sabbeth was changing the face of rock since '69, Psychedelic was fading out, the death of Hendrix and Joplin two weeks apart in '70 shook the industry, Morrison and Allman in '71, and many others, the Beatles break-up in '70 put CCR as the biggest band in the World, the sounds of Funk, Punk and Disco were starting to be heard, the face of music was changing on all fronts and the Eagles had a unique presence and sound that was bridging the gap between older and younger listeners throughout the 70s, along with other bands like The Allman Bros. - The Doobie Bros. - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and being that You were in Georgia, I would think that you would know the funk rock band Mothers Finest, it was an interesting time to listen to all the new sounds and styles on the radio in the '70s...
The last reviewer (And many others apparently), Linda Ronstadt does a beatiful rendition of this song. I don't know which one came out first, but I think it was written for her. The Eagles started out as Linda's back up band.
There was a TV show of the same name back in 1987. This song was the theme for it as well. There is also the movie Desperado with Antonio Banderas and Selma Hayek in 1995. The song wasn't used for the movie, just the TV series.
I believe it was a pretty big hit for them, but now you need to react to Linda Ronstadt singing this, I believe she recorded this first, and there's a live version of her singing it on youtube.
That's exactly what I don't get about these performers and/or whomever owns the song rights. Yes, you have a product that deserves not to be given away and as you say Britt, I respect that. However I for one have gone straight to iTunes to pay for and download songs thanks to YT reactors, songs and artists that I may never have otherwise heard of. I gotta believe that there are at least hundreds if not thousands like me who do the same. IOW, free advertising for them! You'd think they'd figure that out and loosen the reigns a little.
The Eagle's are one of the greatest bands in music history.I would like to recommend to you Britt, three of their songs One Of These Nights(my favorite Eagle's song) and Hotel California and I Can't tell you why.
I’ve never understood why certain bands don’t want their music to be used for a response/reaction video. It’s a great way for them to get their music exposed to millions of people who might otherwise not ever have listened to them. It’s also a great way to make possible new fans who will buy their old albums and their new releases.
Just go through the Eagles greatest hits (both volumes) from beginning to end. Then you'll know. Songwriting, musicianship, harmonies. Linda Ronstadt does an exquisite version of this song, too. I'm going to listen to it now.
I remember there being a series of western movies when i was a teenager called Desperado and this song always played at the end. I don't remember who the actor was but he was a PDC kind of rugged cowboy...
Great reaction ❤. Eagles a bit special. Have you heard Oddessy? - use it up, wear it out. - back to my roots - if you’re looking for a way out. Or the real thing - you to me. Amazing 70s disco from Liverpool, England. Love when a song grabs you like this one ❤️👍🏽👍☘️
Although the Eagles still sound fantastic (in old age), you should re-listen to it when they were younger. The original studio recording is much clearer, lyrics and all.
This song is legendary especially out West in cowboy country. Don of the Eagles wrote it but at first, it didn't do much on the charts. He and a few other studio musicians became Linda Ronstadt's back up band. They fused so well together, after the tour and the recording, they formed their own group and as they say "The rest is history!" Linda cut it as a single and it hit the charts. People were so impressed they looked for the author, and the Eagles re-released it and it became a No. 1 song. I liked Linda's version better, the story line changes to a woman seeing a man she loves getting in trouble, himself after a woman who is no good for him, and not noticing the one who really loves him has been at his side all these years. For years, especially in country bars you'd hear this played on the jukebox as many as seven to ten times a night. It all depended on how many guys were crying in their beer or how many times some gal was trying to send a message, "Look over here buddy! I'm all for you."
This song inspired a series of wester tv movies (5 in all) about a wanted man searching for the one person who could prove his innocence. The first simply called Desperado.

Many of the comments will mention the fact that Linda Ronstadt does a breathtaking version of this. It's true.
Linda was "close" with the Eagles. As musicians some backed Linda in the early 70's before she suggested they form their own band. Special bond.
Yes. Linda Ronstadt's version is a MUST listen to. It's one of the greatest vocal performances ever. Seriously.
Linda Ronstadt's "Desperado" got more air play than the Eagles' version, and Don Henley credited her with making it popular. Her version came out in 1973 as the B-side to her single Colorado. Then on her album Don't Cry Now. It was played heavily on FM radio at the time.
I came into the comments to recommend Linda Ronstadt’s version also.❤
I always thought of a desperado as a cowboy, who is running for the Mexican border to escape the lone ranger, lol. So the lyric that says he’s out riding fences fits right into that old west image.

This song always gets to me. My late wife told me that before we started dating that this song always reminded her of me. We were married for 23 years when she died at the age of 50 of cancer in 2019.
I'm so sorry for your loss
Glad I got to see this before it gets taken down!! You go Britt!!
The Eagles were the most successful American Rock band and they hated each other. They broke up and each member recorded at least one award winning Album. Amazing, with the tightest harmonies.
53 years old, and this song still gives me chills...love it
The Eagles are such a good group, i enjoy their music you can feel the music
You have to listen to Linda Ronstadt's version. You can only imagine! It wasn't a popular song w/ the Eagles until Ms Ronstadt sang it. Then it blew up w/ The Eagles. 🎵 Both versions are ICONIC! Love & peace! ❤✌🏼
Check out Don Henleys "New York Minute " when Glenn Frye was asked why he doesn't sing more songs for the Eagles, he replied why ? We have Don Henley.
Eagles will have YT strike you. Careful! Linda Ronstadt does a very very nice version of this.
Thanks for the info
The Eagles, Americas greatest band of all time...top selling band of the 70's, top selling album of the century over 200 million albums sold ..the crazy thing is they only made 7 studio albums..6 in the 70s 1 in 2008...cmon on thats insane. And now they r head lighting the Sphere...im blown away....greatness
I was lucky enough to see them live years ago. One of the best shows I have seen. They did four encore performances and this song was the final.
All the tv movies Desperado with Alex McArthur have this song for the intro and its where i first fell in love this song
Thank you for reacting to this ...that's my favorite band ....since high school and I'm 61 ....they used that song as an encore ...that's why he was sweating...also he's the drummer but he's been playing on fewer songs as the years have gone by
For a banger, check out Those Shoes.
I have the Eagles Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne on DVD. The whole thing is amazing!
In 1993, a tribute album to the Eagles was released, featuring covers of their greatest songs, by country artists. This one was covered by Clint Black, and he amped that soulful lonliness off the charts.
Seven Bridges Road!!!! Eagles MUST hear. Even if you can’t show the reaction it is harmony perfection!!!
The first song that Don Henley and Glen Fry wrote together!
I have always loved the Eagles!!!
Yes, Linda Ronstadt does a great rendition too. But the original Eagles 1970's version is even better. Love the Eagles and love, love , Linda!
They are such a beautiful Band❤
hermosa canción nunca la olvidare
There was a local rock band around here back in the 70’s and every night the lead singer would do desperado all by himself… RIP Allan Lancaster! It was one of my favorite parts of their set!
Twenty years ago, I tried to get a video of Desperado on UA-cam. So you took a good choice. Best Eagles song, toppimg even Hotel California, onmy opinion.
The Eagles, Don Henley always make me feel something
Caught it before it vanished. woop woop!
It made it to UA-cam!
‘If you don’t change your ways, you will end up alone'…
And this is one of the best lines in pop songwriting:
And freedom, oh, freedom, well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walkin' through this world all alone
The Eagles were undeniably one of the greatest bands of the 20th century. If anyone wants to deny it, look at the numbers.
My favourite Eagles song. Reminds me of my dad and me
The last reviewer (And many others apparently), Linda Ronstadt does a beatiful rendition of this song.
I believe it was a pretty big hit for them, but now you need to react to Linda Ronstadt singing this, I believe she recorded this first, and there's a live version of her singing it on youtube.
it was written by the eagles first in 1973 months before linda did it but never released by them as a single
I love this song and a local radio station plays it once in a while. There is a western trilogy by the same name.
- back to my roots
- if you’re looking for a way out.
Or
the real thing - you to me.
Amazing 70s disco from Liverpool, England.
Love when a song grabs you like this one ❤️👍🏽👍☘️
That final lyric gets me every time. “You better let somebody love you, before it’s too late.”
Now, THAT’S what greatness sounds like.
Although the Eagles still sound fantastic (in old age), you should re-listen to it when they were younger. The original studio recording is much clearer, lyrics and all.
This song is legendary especially out West in cowboy country.
Don of the Eagles wrote it but at first, it didn't do much on the charts. He and a few
other studio musicians became Linda Ronstadt's back up band. They fused so well
together, after the tour and the recording, they formed their own group and as they
say "The rest is history!"
Linda cut it as a single and it hit the charts. People were so impressed they looked
for the author, and the Eagles re-released it and it became a No. 1 song. I liked
Linda's version better, the story line changes to a woman seeing a man she loves
getting in trouble, himself after a woman who is no good for him, and not
noticing the one who really loves him has been at his side all these years.
For years, especially in country bars you'd hear this played on the jukebox as
many as seven to ten times a night. It all depended on how many guys were
crying in their beer or how many times some gal was trying to send a message,
"Look over here buddy! I'm all for you."
I appreciate you, rolling through it all.
That's Don Henley
Saw them live once. I'll never forget it.
This song inspired a series of wester tv movies (5 in all) about a wanted man searching for the one person who could prove his innocence. The first simply called Desperado.
