Man the thing I love about Shugs camping videos is that they are timeless! I've been binge watching Shugs older videos for the past few days (some of them 6 or 7 years old) and the only difference I can tell is the video quality. It's great to see you back out there Shug, I hope one day our paths cross just so I can shout "WHOOOOO BUDDYYYY!" with ya haha.
He's a legend in his own time. All the help, guidance and mentoring. Not many people like that anymore. I feel blessed to have been part of the Shug era.
Once again it was an awesome video! Thank you, thank you, thank you for your timeless energy to show that us “60” years olds can go into the beautiful woods and enjoy perfection! I don’t have the snow here in KY like you but your example does my heart good for the winter camping. I’m at the point I prefer it over the other seasons and it all thanks to your spirit and your sharing! You are a patriarch of what it’s all about my friend!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Always a pleasure to get a peak inside your thoughts and experiences in the woods. Nice mention of Hickory--hope he's doing well. You're only as crazy as you need to be to live a happy life. Simple pleasures...That's the lesson I get from a lot your videos...Appreciate the simple pleasures. Cheers!
Anyone saying you are doing it wrong is just silly. Thanks for these timeless videos Shug. Still 100% valid for a yr 40 fella like myself looking to be a bit smarter and more comfy than my more youthful years. Loving stealing all your tips and tricks as they indeed work for anyone. Comfort is king in the backwoods- both for fun and survival. Cheers from Canada.
You know, Shug, when I'm having a crappy day or a crappy week and I can't escape to my beloved sanctuary woods, your videos - any or all of them - pull me right back out of that state of mind, at least for a while. If you ever decide that making these videos isn't fun anymore, please leave your channel up anyway so I can come back to it. I'd sure miss you and your adventures and your buddies and your lovely ladies and your bar-be-cuing and your performing and your playing and your fun and your banter. Thanks. :-)
From one Sean to another, one of the things I love most about your videos is your unassuming and humble educational method. You are not pretentious or mean to those who may offer an opposing view. You just sincerely want to share the beauty of being outdoors with everyone, and I love that! The world could use more people like you. I've learned a great deal about backpacking, hammocking, and lollygagging from you, and I hope you'll keep it up for years to come. Woo Buddy!!
The ultimate cover all bases Shug video! It just warms the heart of all us dedication Shug fans! Thank you for all the awesome tips! Pray your arm heals before the juggling season begins and also I so envy your squeaky snow sounding experience! WhoooooBuddy❤️
You are soooooo lucky you get the best candy on Earth .Canada candy ! Cocoa in the woods .right on ! Oh yes you are an expert ! But you have guardian angels anyway !
Seeing that whisperlite in action brings back memories! I remember the day when white gas was really the only option! I've cooked many a meal on my whisperlite!
Thanks for the videos , Shug! The time and effort you put in are obvious and appreciated. I miss the winter camping down here in Florida. Lone winter camping was my favorite too.
I don't know why I enjoy watching a nearly 60 year old camping in winter in the woods. But every time a new camping video arrives I get all excited and rush off to watch. Great job shug, and yes you do know how to winter camp properly. And great info. 👍❄️
When I'm hiking whether alone or with someone else, in winter conditions or not, I have a neck knife and/or belt knife, a peanut capsule lighter I've strung with twine I wear around my neck along with a small light. I like wearing shorts or pants with deep pockets to carry anything extra like a candy bar and a small water filter if I'm going a distance from camp. So no matter where I go I have supplies to use. It's an easy set up so I always have these items on me. Brings peace of mind.
thanks for taking us winter camping one more time this season. 100% agree about the shovel. I've had the same trusty voile shovel for close to thirty years. bring it on every winter overnighter. don't feel bad - we had a 65 year old on our winter trip this year. the guy moved better than all of us fifty-somethings.
Almost 60 eh? and you finally figured it out. "My shoulder hurts when I... shovel, do laundry, wash dishes, mow the lawn etc. but camping makes it feel good". Dude, I won't tell Meg. Happy Trails Shug!
If any other hubby did that , it would be suspicious.... But if Shug says it hurts ,it hurts . He has credibility the size of Texas & no self esteem issues .
Great vid Shug! Nice to see you using your xlc and all your Warbonnet gear in the winter! Got a lot of respect for you doing all these solo vids, especially in such harsh cold weather.. I often daydream about being out there alone, and think how great it is to have some solitude- but when I’m actually out by myself, whether hiking or sailing, anything... it can get lonely. I sometimes have to remind myself to not forget about the “moment” and not take It for granted. Having a positive attitude like yours is everything- Thanks for taking us along!
Shug vids always put a positive spin on your day! Thanks, as always, for taking us along. Gonna find a way to incorporate your “early!” cry into my classroom; always best to let students think you’re a little nuts.
My buddy found he needed the extension for his msr snowshoes or they sink in a lot. I have 10" x36" snowshoes which are massive but the most I sink in fresh powder is 2" maybe 4" if I have a pack instead of pulk. Thanks to all of shugs great tips and crafty ideas I managed to hang in -36C and was cozy all night long. All hail the hammock king 😂👍 happy hanging brother. Maybe one day we will catch you north of the border Eh!
Wow Man! Thankyew fur taking me/us along. Taking water thru all of it's "states" is FUN! Specially when you mix brown powder with it then drink it down. Awesome Dude!
the smile on your face tells me you're doin it right buddy. Maybe not the way they would do it, but that's why we go sometimes. to figure out how you're going to overcome life's challenges. thanks for all that you share with us, all your perspective, and for sharing your addiction with us all. hope you feel better soon.
Nice to see you in the great northern realm pal! "you're not doing winter camping right?" I have to call "Bovine Scatology" on that one pal! I've never camped in those conditions ... coldest I've ever done is around 20 degrees. You're tougher than me pal, but I surely can see how and why you love it! Anyway might good to see this video ... rightly enjoyed it. OH! And I love the sam'ich warmer!
Ah.. All is well again in the world. New video and a Shug in the woods. Thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us. Always learn something and never lacking in entertainment. And my Mom use to say talking by yourself is fine... It's when you start answering that you might have a problem.
Thanks for posting up another great video of your time in the woods, too much to say thanks for other the the time taken for making the vids but also, thanks for putting us U.K guys onto Pop Tarts, I get them in Tesco, and the Imusa pots ( HillBilly Pot ) great, keep up the great work and watch that shoulder :)
Man at 60 I was "like a rock". At 74? closer to rotten sawdust! But I still spend weeks a year camping (love my ridge runner). When in the woods alone I talk to my friends (imaginary) I call "the boys". My daughter says that's fine as long as they just listen. So far at least that's the case. I must say that the arrival of a shug video is one of my high points.
The only wrong way is to not go at all. I had to get in a day hike yesterday although the trail I was on was super busy, people galore. Thanks for the video.
Good talk ... I’m not new to camping, but new to winter camping. I used the information you presented here, to tighten up some last minute purchases. I’m heading out next weekend with my brothers to test my skills ...
I sure didn't see anything wrong, you are very thoughtful and have back-ups as needed' and you see all the great things to see out there! What else would you need? Pete D.---
Again, another Great video Shug! Perfect mix of gear details, the woods (with Sasquatch, Sasqich?), and humor :) Also, welcome to being 60! It's just like 30-40 only wiser :0) .... maybe. Others' opinions might differ.... Thanks again for continuing to share your outdoor life and experiences
Yet another great video Shug. You never let us down!! Call me old fashioned but still like the original style snowshoes. Wider footprint and you float on all snow types with them....plus its less work tamping down the campsite. I'm surprised you're not wearing Fjallraven pants. Many styles to choose from. Great pants!
But tough getting up that steep ridge in trad snowshoes with a pack and no crampons grips. But yes they sure do float better.....ua-cam.com/video/ffquSy7EYUA/v-deo.html
Hi Shug! Nice winter trip, sunny day. When you said that Penguin bar was outstanding candy, reminded us of another dumb little joke for your next trip alone: Why did the scarecrow get a promotion?Stay safe and warm out there!A: He was outstanding in his field!
Your taking a big risk eating that penguin bar standing up. Everyone knows your knees can buckle when your eyes roll back in your head. Also I like the spam in the can. Yes spam in the can is for me he he.
Shug i arrived saw all that snow. Hard to believe snow melts off so fast. By end of April. I be there then again. I did some sightseeing. Still doing it. Wsit for storm to pass. Uma piling up the snow totals in the midwest. Take care.
Awesome video again just subd been watching the minus 40 hammock camp you did few years back brilliant. I wish we got those temps in England our winter camps tend to be wet withoiut the snow.but at least its consistent. Thanks for sharing youre experiences great stuff :)
Thank you sir! In the fall/winter/spring work keeps me pretty closely tethered to the city. But you have inspired me. If you can drive four hours for an overnight, I can drive an hour and a half even if it’s just car camping with my blackbird XLC it was worth it! Had to be back to work the next evening so came home early afternoon took a long nap. Thanks for all the inspiration and getting me up off this couch.
Just got back from the echo trail. Had a little ice fishing trip to Astrid lake. But just wanted to give a trail report for the west end of the echo. "All clear"
Love your videos. I've got 34+ yrs of WC.(winter camping, not water closet) experience and I can relate to EVERYTHING you share in your videos. There isn't one right way to WC. other than calculating your risks, being prepared physically, mentally, calorically and equipmentally( I know... not a real word). I'm about a year and a half younger than you and have a new twinkle of excitement about getting out and learning more about hammock camping(3 nights only, so far). My back alone, in the am., is happier for it! THE SHOULDER THING!! Been there, done that... The Kelly Starrett advise is good. Also keeping the area active(probably not a problem for you...) but not overly stressed. Great Lakes Collagen and some vit. C containing foods... I could go on and on! STOP ME!! Thanks for the continuing inspiration!
My most memorable backpack trips was when I was alone. Were those Mt. Olive pickles on that BBQ sandwich? Thanks Shug, for another enjoyable video. All the best. Allen
Brilliant just how it should be. Loved the penguin I’ve had them since the age of 5 all through school and still enjoy one now. Let me know if you ever need any more. :)
Hey Shug, I took some biscuits from Louise's into the gorge. We put them in direct sunlight sitting on the reflectix seat pad you use. 20 minutes in a ziplock and they were nice and toasty. Try it out next time for your Carolina sandwiches

Whooooooooooooooo Buddy))))))))) and thanks for the support.
Spotting Shug in the woods is more rare than seeing sasquach. Came close once myself, but it was just his van.
Indeed timeless. So much good info
You got yourself a pretty boil. .All the videos are binge videos !
He's a legend in his own time. All the help, guidance and mentoring. Not many people like that anymore. I feel blessed to have been part of the Shug era.

Have a right goodie out there~~~~~
The penguin bar, sitting in the snow... that's it in a nutshell right there.
You inspire me.
Thanks from an Iowa boy.
ChillyBottom Lounge~~~
I am so glad you talked yourself into going camping, so that we could then come along.
Glad you came.
You know, Shug, when I'm having a crappy day or a crappy week and I can't escape to my beloved sanctuary woods, your videos - any or all of them - pull me right back out of that state of mind, at least for a while. Working on the shoulder. It will take some vigilance but on the way. Thankee.
You dont even need to juggle to be extremely entertaining . the blue grass , the impersonations , the stories , who needs juggling ?
“well if it does go bad i’ll make sure i’ll get it on video for you”. NOW THATS DEDICATION TO YOUR FANS😄🎦👍
I mean it!
@@shugemery we know you do mean it .actually we can't wait to see you eat the B B. Q. I have to admit the chores is what keeps me on the couch .

Seeing that whisperlite in action brings back memories! I remember the day when white gas was really the only option! I've cooked many a meal on my whisperlite!
Happy Birthday in advance, the big 60 !! I have 5 years over you, we just need to keep on trucking .......
Yessir!
Very lovely to see one of those "good to be alive" days. Thanks.
(nothing worse than damp "beaut-ocks"! 😉)
It was one of those days.
Thanks for the videos , Shug! The time and effort you put in are obvious and appreciated. I miss the winter camping down here in Florida. Lone winter camping was my favorite too.

I always wonder why too! Can't believe I am about 60. I feel 31.
I thank you.
shugemery you are most welcome Sir.
When I'm hiking whether alone or with someone else, in winter conditions or not, I have a neck knife and/or belt knife, a peanut capsule lighter I've strung with twine I wear around my neck along with a small light. Sounds good. I had stuff like that in my Ribz Pack I was wearing up front.
Thoroughly enjoyable and informative videos; they almost make me want to enjoy winter, and winter here is a beast with a lot of wind. Almost....
I've learned to embrace it. Long winters here.
At 59 I hear what your saying. Love winter camping here in Northern Vermont. Great video. Take care of the shoulder, Al
I love Vermont.....at any age.
thanks for taking us winter camping one more time this season. 100% agree about the shovel. I love winter camping. Nothing better than the piece and quiet and solitude....
It is nice especially when one lives in a winter state.
Nothing better than a video of Shug in his element in 'Top Form'!!
King of Lolligag! Awesome sunny day, great video!
Oh lolly I did.
Always nice to see your videos Shug. Thankyou !
Yessir and Whoooooo Buddy)))))

True. I needed the peace on this trip though I have been spending lots of time alone. I'm a loner at heart. Whooooo Buddy))))
Shug vids always put a positive spin on your day! Thanks, as always, for taking us along. Gonna find a way to incorporate your “early!” cry into my classroom; always best to let students think you’re a little nuts.
I always worked harder for my quirky teachers!
Shug, thank you for the miles of smiles.
Y'elcome.

They do sink a bit but the great traction is needed on backwoods trail......
Shug, I'm in the Twin cities and have the same solo camping issues. Its never bad, but often lonely ;) thx for all your great videos!
I love a solo. Never lonely. Love the solitude.
What a classic video Thanks Shug!!!

OH! And I love the sam'ich warmer!
The BBQ sandwich was Glory..glory I say.
I'm cold just watching this. By March 14, I had already mowed the grass. Great video as always old buddy.
So glad to see you back doing what you love...kia ora (Native NZ Maori for 'Hi') from NZ!
I do nothing but what I love! Thankee.
This long video was just what I needed to get me thru the last few weeks of winter.
Thanks. I still cut out a lot of palaver
shugemery Hey Shug. Do you use any type of external microphone for your videos? Or is just the built in one in the HX80?
That is just the built in mic...no external.
I love those atacs au true north boots Shug!
They are from Empire Canvas in Duluth, MN
Great to see you back in the piney woods. Thanks for taking us along.
Thankee....great to be there.
I love me some Spam. Include it for at least one meal on every trek. New Chirizo flavor is AWESOME!!
Never had that flavor...I'll look for it.
Man, you make some awesome videos, funny but yet you get to the point, makes for a very interesting video. Thanks Shug : )
Thank ya' Florida girl!
Thank you for sharing an amazing experience that I will never know in person. Much thanks from Florida. I'm cold just watching you.
Ah.. All is well again in the world. New video and a Shug in the woods. Thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us. Always learn something and never lacking in entertainment. And my Mom use to say talking by yourself is fine... It's when you start answering that you might have a problem.
I answer myself and even but in on myself!
I always imagine Pop Tarts in the UK being tasty. Mince meat pop tarts, mushy pea pop tarts! Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Thanks for sharing! Makes me excited to get out in the woods for a hang.
Yessir...get excited.
Great video. You never disappoint. I too fill your pain after injuries. I turned 60 last month! Keep on keeping on!
Yessir...won't go down without a fight though!
OMG, I fell out my hammock when you said "I thought that was poo", good stuff Shug! Thanks for the video!
Haaaaa......first to comment on that.
Thanks for entertaining us with another winter experience.
It is my job to do so!
Always learning something new shug...glad you decided to head out to the woods..enjoy👌👍👊✊👣🌅
glad you got something out of it.
As always, I enjoyed your video.
I just can't believe anyone knows more about camping than you do. If anyone does know more ,they don't make videos
Makes me want to eat some pretty - boiled peanuts EARLY & watch slingblade again .
Good stuff Shug! I love the winter camping. But I do have to have a fire.
I is nice to have for sure.
Thank you Shug! I'm happy to see you with an inReach. Awesome video!
Nice having that SOS.
Hey Shug! Good to see you out and about and having some fun. So until next time be safe, be well and keep on hanging.
I will and thanks.
Loving your work Shug. It's another fine day to be doing it..... 😉
Oh, hardly work. Well...maybe a little!
I decided to enjoy a Penguin with you. My joke was "Why was the Penguin popular? Cos he was an ice guy."
I love it. Hey Jeep.
Good to have them fellers with you out there. I thank ya' for the words.
Great video Shug. Thanks for bringing us along on your over-nighter. Gorgeous spot where you camped.
I winter camped there on one of my first winter trips many years ago...pre hammock days. Needed to be by a river.
The only wrong way is to not go at all. I had to get in a day hike yesterday although the trail I was on was super busy, people galore. Thanks for the video.
Nothing worse than a crowded trail!
Good talk ... I’m not new to camping, but new to winter camping. I used the information you presented here, to tighten up some last minute purchases. I’m heading out next weekend with my brothers to test my skills ...
Enjoy the trip and keep those feet warm!
I sure didn't see anything wrong, you are very thoughtful and have back-ups as needed' and you see all the great things to see out there! What else would you need? Pete D.---
Whooooo Buddy Pete.
Again, another Great video Shug!
Perfect mix of gear details, the woods (with Sasquatch, Sasqich?), and humor :)
Also, welcome to being 60! It's just like 30-40 only wiser :0) .... maybe. Others' opinions might differ....
Thanks again for continuing to share your outdoor life and experiences
Whoooooo Buddy))))
Brave to be out in those temperatures, but a great video, thanks Shug. Many more great walks in the future woohoo buddy!
Long winters here...must brave it.
This is absolutely the best video i've seen in a long time.
Glad I was in it then!....thankee.
Best winter video yet! Seen literally all camping vids. Makes me sad to see winter end. Can't wait for Isle Royal! All secure in sector 7 whoo buddy!
This year I crave Spring.... Give me leaves!
Digging out of the snow 54" at the front door and 16 degrees and 3 days till spring. Well what can I say Thanks for the video, good stuff. Be safe.
Dig on!
Cheers for more adventures Shug! People would be out of their damned minds if they wish ill of other people. Take care and have fun.

Spam in can for a bit more warmer weather! The penguin is so good.

A nice 0ºF trip is still my fave. Just cold enough! Best.
Great to see you in the woods again! Love your videos and can’t wait to see you and Hickory on another adventure! All the best from Kentucky!
Can't wait until him and I can get out. Maybe in May if all works.
Thank you Shug. Made my morning today.
Thank you sir! In the fall/winter/spring work keeps me pretty closely tethered to the city. But you have inspired me. It is always 'bout worth it.
Awesome stuff! Looks like it was a beautiful night
It sure was restful. Thanks.
Wow Shug! Nice crisp video! Great resolution😎
New setting on camera. Thanks.

Hey Shug, I took some biscuits from Louise's into the gorge. We put them in direct sunlight sitting on the reflectix seat pad you use. 20 minutes in a ziplock and they were nice and toasty. Try it out next time for your Carolina sandwiches
I want a country ham biscuit right now!

Glad you changed your mind as I thought you were getting a bit stir crazy with all that rehearsing going on. Thanks.
