I remember many years ago you did a -40 trip. My friend who grew up in Florida thought it was inconceivable like out of a science fiction movie. He watched that vid and to this day calls you “The -40 Guy”

Great fun and good food in very cold conditions, thanks. A little Medaglia Oro mixed in brownies when I make them helps the chocolate taste even better.

My cousin and I used to winter camp with a sled. Had to ask, because Iowa is mostly private land. Farmers were more than glad to give us permission. Good old days. Now you could be shot just walking up to the farmer's door.
Thus my need to "get away~~"

As Winter approaches, I watched your Winter Camping Trip again. I can see that your are in your zone. I think that Winter takes us to a primal place and survival mode kicks in. You just feel more aware and alive. Always a pleasure!

Your cooking gear amazed me, and I love it. Probably wouldn't even be possible on a summer backpacking trip, and would give the "ultralight" groups hideous nightmares. Nothing beats that old black iron skillet, but not likely possible except in the winter with a pulk? Disregarding vehicle camping, of course. Thanks for another fantastic video.
We did dine in fine fashion out there this trip. So glad Jonah toted the cast iron.

I also do a layered underquilt sandwich when doing BWCA winter camping. Works great! Double up a 20 degree, 30 degree and throw a thermarest z lite foam pad in the bottom. I get way better sleep in a hammock vs hot tent. Getting up every 2 hours feeding the stove is a pain and all you get is wet snow. Been there done that. Once you go hammock you never go back.
Layering works real good. Funny on the hot stove. I may rent one someday from an outfitter to see if I like it. But that constant feeding.....hmmmmm
Man I didn’t like that kind of weather even when we had a diesel stove to heat our gp medium tents in Germany for the Army . Yes the gear sucked we had to use in the 80’s but I was almost 40 years younger too. You definitely have some cold weather endurance. Respect to you have fun on those outings and stay safe.
I like you observations. Long winters here...gotta get outta the home and woods snooze.
