I have been watching and admiring your videos for 6-8 years. You inspired me to switch to hammock camping about 6 years ago. You are an inspiration for all to get out and enjoy the outdoors. I live in PA and hope to get up to the BWCA in the next year or two. 66, crushing the trail and rockin and rolling, you go Shug! Whooo Buddy!!

Beautiful trip! I've been out a few nights in the cold (19F),but no snow here yet unfortunately. Love the Superior Gear hammocks in the winter. And a big YAAAAAASSSSSSSS for the play along with RATM. Absolutely love it!
The snow was real nice. Made the walking tough but the beauty made up for that. Thanks the RATM....just got turned onto them and the bass lines got to me.
Enjoying my quilted Chameleon very much. Nice to have Dutch pushing Danny to continue the innovation. Can't beat the integrated underquilts in the cold of winter.
@@shugemery 20 degree. Figured that would cover most bases, then stack my 3/4 20 degree phoenix if the temps are looking to get saucy. Next purchase is a winter tarp. I do a lot of winter backpacking so it’ll be nice not to fuss with the quilt so much.
It sure was a windy weekend when you were out. There's going to be a lot of dead trees down in the woods by spring. 40 mph winds are forecast here in Ely for tomorrow and we have already received a few more inches of snow. Safe travels!
I camped at that Becoosin Lake campsite on Nov. 9. I left a nice stack of processed firewood there, and I really hope it was still there for you guys to enjoy. An entertaining adventure to watch, as always!

Was a right goodie for sure. PopTairts in the woods...nostalgia. Fun learning new bass grooves. The bass has led me to rediscovering some of my old growing up music and stuff I never really listened to like RATM. Heavy bass!
A quick thanks Shug for the shoelace drip line tip, in a many moons ago video. We've been having some wet weather here in the South Island of New Zealand and my hammock was getting damp from water running down the straps. So I took your advice and invested in some flat shoelaces. Cut each one into 4 and attached with a prussic. Whoa buddy Mr!

I was so excited to see a new video from MISTAH SHUG this morning. I don’t really love walking inside on the treadmill when winter arrives. But walking with Mistah Shug and the Jonas Brothers is scientifically proven to increase enjoyment levels by a gajillion! Glad you’re doing well, and thanks for the video!

Woo buddy! That's a great trip Shug. We've all had trips were things didn't go quite as planned, but when you have such good company and good food with a warm fire, you're doing all right. I love the superior gear system for winter camping, it's cozy and simple.

If I camped in a hammock in the cold like that. I would need my spark plugs, fuel injectors, oil, anit-freeze and transmission fluid changed when I woke up. It would take me awhile to get use to the cold camping like you do.
@@shugemery I live in Pa. It is cold here in the 20's and 30's at times in South Central Pa. I do know about getting climatized. Did it when I lived in Co. years ago. You and yours have a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Years.
@@JeffreyDonaldson-q1dI don’t know. I’m in south Louisiana. An hell theirs times I don’t even like being outside at all. Much less any camping. So I’m not sure about the climatizing. I’m sure it happens to a degree through for sure. Crazy though I worked a decade in a steel mill. An 80 ton batches of Liquid Metal is hot. I’ve had clothes on me smoking more times than I can count an hard hats warping. A countless 12 hour shifts. An even with all that. Not working their just the heat humidity outside. I still don’t like it or want to be in it at times. Didn’t build up any tolerance lol. Hell if anything I could look out the window in the summer an feel the radiant heat through it an about start sweating inside. Heavily rejecting it 😂
Thanks for sharing Shug! I'm impressed by the way you guys embrace the cold and take a zero day on trail. Makes me realize I should take a day off once in awhile to soak it all in instead of always covering miles 😊

I was looking forward to seeing one of your winter BWCA videos. I am a scout leader in SC and I am the adult leader for a group of scouts that is doing an Okpik weekend at the Northern Tier base in Ely. We are really looking forward to learning some new camping skills, hopefully seeing the Aurora and all kinds of other fun activities. I don't think we have ever been so excited and nervous at the same time!
@@shugemery Thanks for the tips! We bring base layers, liner gloves and hats/face coverings. They provide us with mid layers, outer layers, gloves and Sorel boots. We also bring our own 20 degree bag and they provide us with the rest of our sleep system. We had to buy some new gear, but a lot of the gear used for the cold nights at Philmont overlap with the gear we need to bring for this trek.

No trick to it. Just unzip top layers, drop trousers and go. Sitting on that icy seat actually seems to warm me up somehow...but I think it is just the body working to expel the horror!

Shug - if you're ever looking for a good winter overnight spot - I think Ram Lake would work well off the Gunflint - quick lil 90 rod portage in and you have a few sites, or could go in further too.
Take your PB and J in waxpaper and prop it in front of the fire. It will toast right thru the waxpaper. I did that for lunch every day during the wet summer when I worked in the Alaska woods Surveying the Icefield Hwy N of Juneau for my college job.
Man that looks awesome. Was planning on going to itasca this weekend but saw it's actually going to be pretty warm up in Finland so I'm planning on hitting up Manitou park instead. I swear the best sleep I've ever had is in my hammock listening to the rushing Manitou river. Hope to go to the BWCA before summer but I need to get my winter hammocking setup a bit more dialed in
Here's my wife and I, converting degrees F into Celcius, to determine how cold it was. 5 F, minus 32 = -27. add 10% = -30. divide by 2 = -15 Celcius. Good camping weather indeed. Thanks Shug. Always fun.

We took the zero to hang out an visit, let the groin heal a bit after 4 falls in that bouldery slippery trail. Was good!

Shug - if you're ever looking for a good winter overnight spot - I think Ram Lake would work well off the Gunflint - quick lil 90 rod portage in and you have a few sites, or could go in further too.

I did that for lunch every day during the wet summer when I worked in the Alaska woods Surveying the Icefield Hwy N of Juneau for my college job.

Man that looks awesome. Was planning on going to itasca this weekend but saw it's actually going to be pretty warm up in Finland so I'm planning on hitting up Manitou park instead. I swear the best sleep I've ever had is in my hammock listening to the rushing Manitou river.
Hope to go to the BWCA before summer but I need to get my winter hammocking setup a bit more dialed in
Manitou is one of my faves too. That area is tops. Ease on into that winter hammocking. Long nights lead to long snoozola....

Here's my wife and I, converting degrees F into Celcius, to determine how cold it was. 5 F, minus 32 = -27. add 10% = -30. divide by 2 = -15 Celcius. Good camping weather indeed. Thanks Shug. Always fun.
