    Shug -- You've inspired me. I haven't had the time to get out and away, so I just put up my hammock in the back yard last night. Hi-jacked the kids swingset frame. Woke up a few times because of suburban noises, but got almost nine hours of sleep! That never happens.
    Only got down to the mid-30's here in the KC area last night. I just received a SnugPak UQ, so used that, a sleeping pad, and a sleeping bag. No CBS at all. I need to get a good overquilt though, as my sleeping bag wasn't quite enough. I woke up chilly. Not miserable, just chilled. All Secure in the Heartland Sector! Whoo Buddy!

    After waking up at 4 am, driving a half hour getting set up, flipping Chris Cakes for a few hours, Cleaning up packing up and driving home. There is nothing better than finding a Shug video waiting for me on the UA-cams. Now after writing that out, I will have to ponder the life choices that lead me to Pancake Entertainment and watching a guy in Minnesota hiking in -5-degree weather.

    The quintessential Shug video! One of my all time favorites. Makes me want to get out on the trail after watching it. I purchased a Boreal Wool shirt about three years ago and it's absolutely my favorite piece of gear for winter hiking. I've worn it in sleet and freezing rain and it keeps me warm and dry. You can wear it around a camp fire and not worry about a spark melting it or destroying it. An item you'll have for the rest of your life and probably pass along to other generations (as you stated).

    Completely agree with the new camping policy in Minnesota. I live in walker and occasionally will go on a week stint on a whim and I can't do that any longer. I Have to register in advance and if you don't like a park you can't just move on anymore. Complete bs, in my opinion. I feel like they should have kept at least a couple first come first serve sights.

    Thanks Shug! I'm a new hammock camper and your videos have been very helpful. My first winter overnighter in the hammock this year was a success, in large part to the info you provided. It got down to -8 fahrenheight and I'm itching to start tackling some colder temps! We're warming up quickly here in Alaska so we won't get a chance at that again for a while. We'll need to make do with combatting mosquitos for a while now! Keep the videos coming!

    We always kept a Nalgene in our sleeping bag in scouts. I also kept one made up with 2 packets of cocoa. Moved it to the cold spots while sleeping and had some Yoo-hoo in the morning. I know the smellables in the sleeping bag weren't bear or mini bear safe but when you are in the woods with 25-50 kids plus 5-10 adults there is enough noise between kids stomping and old man snores to scare anything off.

      Olympic Outdoors Dad here in the NC piedmont the things we have to worry about are mostly raccoons and rodents. There are some areas with larger animals creating a threat. Usually the problems we had were mice and raccoons clawing thru a pack that someone left some m&ms in a pocket.

    • @Olympia_Outdoors
      @Olympia_Outdoors 7 років тому

      Chris Rasmussen That's interesting. At some places here on the west coast I'll hang my whole pack. We do have black bear to think about but there pretty shy.

    • @usernick8928
      @usernick8928 7 років тому

      SW Washington here, I have left my food bag hanging from one end of my hammock overnight in an area with black bear scat fresh on the trail in, never bothered. Many would say that it's irresponsible, and I can't really argue. But I was so close to civilization, within a couple miles of houses, that I figured the bears wouldn't be all that tempted. Now some scraps left out in the eating area were taken, but since I never heard anything and nothing was particularly disturbed, I assume it was rodents.
      And no, I don't think I'm related to Chris... At least not that I'm aware of

      shugemery Deleted it. 33 minutes of backlit glare and only about 15 minutes of actual peformance - most which was out of view because of the terrible angle at which I set up. Should've known my phone would've run out of storage....should've used my actual camera. Oh well, had my hands full the whole time or would've been better prepared and more vigilant...

    I do like the idea of the ribz packs but I am not sure if I would need them, I would probably fill them with random unnecessary items..? I like using the uco as well, it gives off a nice light, one perfect for when your outdoors and realigning yourself, I do also love the luminoodle that I have when you need to see!Frozen pancakes and poptarts....oh dear! definitely looks like a cold one!That wool shirt looks like something else!!!glad that the pancakes finally defrosted, and worked out well!!!!

    I have carried a fully loaded glock 20 in a ribz pack and it handles the weight very nicely didn't even notice it. I got it for canoeing in the bwca and canada, haven't used it much for normal hiking. The straps can get a bit tangled if you aren't careful though when putting it on and off lol.

      Gotta kind of swing it on calmly. I carry rocks in it to throw at haints and boogers.

    Hey shug. Those ribz packs are badass. I have been using them for years. They change their designs every couple years. I have 3 different versions. You cannot put too much in them. It gets too bulky. There is no padding on the body side. It needs padding.
