Just like that, used Porsche Cayennes went up $5000.
For real! I'm looking for an affordable camping/fire road/dirt SUV and I can't have an Xj, touareg, and now this! Stop y'all!
@@melissahale7175 go for a lexus GX 470 if you can find one. They're basically a v8 4runner with lexus comfort. If you're lucky, you can find them in thr 5-7k range but most are 8-10k.
😭😭😭
@@YanDaddyy thanks! I was looking at the LXs for that Land Cruiser feel, but I did even think about the 4runner platform. Awesome
melissa hale Under the radar. Look for a Nissan Xterra around 2002-2005 years. Just bought a 2003 with 158,000 miles. Got lucky and older gentleman bought it when it was only 3 years old with 38,000 miles and he religiously took care of it. I got a phenomenal deal. I can’t find one for what I paid but if you look they can be had anywhere from $3000-$6000. Watch UA-cam videos of these things, they are beasts at off-roading in stock form. So if you rig it up you got a vehicle that can hang with the best of them. Shhhhhh, don’t tell anybody or these things will be $9000 next week. LOL.
You should do something like this for the next Car Trek.
1. Buy some deprecated AWD SUV's.
2. Test them out in their stock form. 3. Then you each get a budget to do some upgrades.
4 . Test their limits with the upgrades.
You could use that crazy hill that they test off-roaders in UA-cam
That's a great idea actually
I hope that VinWiki like means he's filed this away as an idea for Car Trek 3
@@Onewheelordeal let's hope and if they use the idea all I ask is a mention in the credits 🙂
AGREED
People don’t appreciate how much Porsche over-engineered the 955/957 Cayenne. Low range, central and rear diff locks, disconnectable sway bars. VR6 in the base model is solid, transmission is made by Aisin (a Toyota supplier). And it drives like a Porsche on the road unlike the GX, Wrangler or Xterra.
Can confirm the 1st Gen Xterra drives more like a Jeep than a cross over SUV. If you compare the ride of a 2002 Xterra to a 2002 Jeep Wrangler (I’ve owned both), the Xterra rides great!
Ficon Hmm, not quite.
Drove a family member's '06 Cayenne S V8 and it doesn't ride that well, especially in the city going through many speedbumps or uneven roads.
Tried all 3 riding modes and heights, not much difference.
At the highway it is totally different. Unless you need to do a quick evasion, the car pretty much goes straight.
Oh, and torque delivery of the 4.5 V8 is insane. Just blip the throttle a bit and you already feel the punch!
@@apexseal2811 Have you ever driven a Jeep Wrangler sir? There are ox carts from medieval England that ride better. And heavens forbid your amazing off-road Jeep hits a pothole at highway speeds. Look up death wobble.
Ficon Haha, sure, there's nothing to compare with a Jeep.
Even doing 80+mph at stock ride height is a risk!
I mean, I expected more from a Porsche SUV, but well...
@@apexseal2811 I didn’t understand why all Jeeps block traffic at 5 mph under the speed limit until I drove one.
Super off roader! My wife and I did almost all of Australia's dirt trails in our 2010 Cayenne GTS, no mods except for 18" rims running Pirelli Scorpion AT+ tyres. Never a problem!
Getting ready to do this very mod to my ‘10 GTS. 😁
The plattform of the first Touareg and Cayennes are extremely capable. I recently sold my 06' Touareg V6 TDI which was capable of doing 45° inclines and got further in my forest then my friends Land Rover Discovery. Loved that car. Never broke down. Had to sell it bc of the emission zones in Germany
and ironically, building a completely new vehicle for you will create substantially more "emissions" than just continuing to drive the original vehicle. Leftist/globalist "logic"...
@@georgiapatriot4575 emission zones in germany are just made for the automobile economy...

TwoBeers I’m guessing it basically require you to replace your older vehicle with a newer one, in order to help subsidize the German auto industry?

Lol, but I was crazy for making a Bravada into a trail rig...
275hp i6, converted to two-speed transfer case, 32" STT Pros, 3.73 gears with rear locker, 13500 superwinch...

That actually sounds f’n awesome
I'm a big fan of watching how much Bryson has grown his business. He color matched the lower valances on my MKIV GTI about 13 years ago, and at the time was doing smaller scale work. To see what he has built his business into, with the RWB and Keen builds, in addition to some other amazing custom stuff is pretty awesome!
Just bought a 2004 cayenne Turbo last week then I see this video :D I was thinking of putting some AT tires and lights on it!
Now I want to go camping with this kind of vehicle setup 🙃
Yes! Just made a video taking mine up jeep trails in Colorado. People were genuinely mad at us thinking we were destroying a Porsche but it handled so good!
If I had a job that required me to drive off-road in inclement weather, I'd go for the Porsche. Pretty much the best handling SUV, yet it can handle the trails pretty well too
And that is why I have a 2008 Cayenne S.
Man I wish people would test the capability of VAG SUV’s. Vw made these the sleeper of off-road they do great
I wish you had done a Rothmans Porsche 959 Rally Car wrap. Would be epic beyond belief.
Last time I was this early, Casey's Viper was still in pieces.
This is exactly what Hoovie needs to do with his Porsche SUV that he just put the new engine in. Totally!
Love my 2006 Cayenne S Titanium Edition, will never sell! 💯
good thing to note is they have 6 piston front brembos and 4 piston rears that fit under 17's
I drive a 2006 Touareg 4.2 non air adjustable suspension upgraded to Bilstein, 2in lift, 275 65 18 Goodyear Wrangler dura trac tires, upgraded light system, original zenon headlights, k&n filters. My other ride is a 2005 land Rover lr3 HD. 4.4 V8 air adjustable suspension, locking rear differential, k&n filter. 230k miles on lr3, 160k on Touareg. Touareg best driving overall. Lr3 hands down better off road.lr3 a bit unstable over 120 mph. Touareg just wants to go.
I'm interested in what he said going from Asheville to the Outer Banks off road. Any info on that? Dedicated trail or local knowledge only?
Same and I live in NC. I know about Mtn to Sea but that is hiking.
Yeah, I mean I certainly know of gravel roads around Mt Mitchell, in the Wilson Creek area and a few other places, but I've never tried to connect them all together.
CLT here if anyone wants to go explore some back roads.
I drive by Bryson's shop every day and see this sexy blue smurf sitting outside. Cool to see his story on here.
That diesel Touareg is one of the best towing vehicles with a whopping 7500lbs . They are torque monsters
Love the vw/Audi/Porsche 3.0 diesel. Slap a tune on it and it’s a monster 500+ ft lbs. I love mine.

Just like that, last week I picked up a VR6 955 cayenne with faulty ELV/ESL module for $2,000. Pulled that out and replaced those relays in an hour.

Love seeing a Porsche going trail riding. Also makes me want to get my 3rd Gen 4Runner back to trail riding again - also want to spec out the wife's '01 WJ so she can enjoy it as well.
There was a body shop down the road from me that always had a few of these outside until they closed up.
the yellow one looks the best~
What’s the cost of a CV axle for a Porsche?! Uh
Edd How about some links to those Cayenne parts?
Go to eurowise.com/offroad. And join off-road VAG and Porsche on Facebook to know kore
I have a bone stock 92 pathfinder that I take out. Its nothing special just good cheap fun. Everything works except the power locks it sits on 235 75 15 cooper discoverer at's and I love it
I just moved into a fab shop. I would love to put a cayenne S or turbo on a jig table and build a full tube chassis with longer control arms for a nice mid travel AWD Baja romper. The 6 piston 14” brakes are killer on these cars. The only issue is the auto trans. Cayenne Gts manual boxes are tough to find. Think about it. 2800lbs 400whp 16” travel awd. Mega.
I love my Cayenne Turbo of that very generation! People think I’m insane that I drive that on a daily, but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! :)
Never seen Porsche like this in Iceland but we make off-road Toyota land cruisers ,Land Rover and jeeps for the glaciers
Dang it! Should’ve kept my wife’s 09 Cayenne! Loved that car. Knew it was capable with some mods. So fun. Great story thanks!
I'm all American lowriders ,customs, big chevys and cadillacs. I have real soft spot for Porsche though and this is awesome
I almost got a 2011 Cayenne 4 months ago. It was the V6. If it didnt have any issues I probably would have gotten it. But it did have a few. I didnt stop looking at Cayennes though. Since last year I wanted to build one to be like a overland/offroad/daily machine. I did get to sit and play with a 2013 Cayenne and I was sold on that... too bad none are in my budget lol.
All the "off roaders" are going up in value. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cayenne goes up too. Im looking at Xterras, GX470 (for a year now and prices shot up), GL450 (IMO the low key off road machine, it is huge though, only downside). I might just end up getting a X5. lol. Even though im not the biggest fan of those.
I have am 04 taoureg I use for offroading and as a tow pig. Love that thing. Not in the best shape cosmetically but runs great at 240k miles.
Thank you for doing this to the VR6. Good to know mine could do this if i wanted to push it that way.
I saw tons of them Cayenne's blasting through the dunes in UAE and Saudi, along with Land Cruisers and LX570s... A lot more capable than many would think.
I hope people will expand even more. People need to see that some of these (SUV)'s on the market are being overlooked as for the trail abilities. At the same time it's entertaining watching them go in over their heads.
This is exactly what I love about our Cayenne. Can fly down a highway or a rutted sand road in comfort with the cooled seats on.
When said seats are working.
That is a beautiful life. I invite you to come to my homeland where we do this regularly through forests and deserts. No Porsche Cayennes have ever joined us since yours is unique but we have VW Touaregs, Land Cruisers, Prados, Land Cruiser pickups, Land rovers, range rovers, Lexus 560s and Mitsubishi Pajeros
Would like to hear about the Rome to outer banks off road route.
Idk. I drove a slightly lifted 2006 Jeep rubicon unlimited from Ohio to Moab and back and it was fairly comfortable. Honestly. 1590 miles each way.
Now I have a Lexus GX460 which is obviously a much more comfortable off-road rig, but it wasn’t bad.
Glad to hear someone on here talk about crawling,
Ive had an 05 cayenne s for my first car sadly my father sold it because he couldnt handle the expenses..ive always dreamt of turning it off-road but i didnt have the capital so i just put a cut-out on it right close to the pipes that are underneath the engine..had a bunch of fun with it sounded throaty and deep to the sound of that v8 is just amazing...when i have a job im buyin one of them and heavily modifiy em loved the handling and power and look💙
Think I'd prefer to know the story of the 3 off road 911's
What’s the trail system/route he talked about from Asheville to the outer banks?
A modern Land Cruiser does both, more comfort than a Jeep, more capable than a Cayenne, BUT an offroad Cayenne is pretty cool
Rumor is 2021 will be last year for LC in US.
I have a lady who comes into my shop with a diesel one of these, and I can def see the attraction of exploring off-road from the comfort of that interior
Surprised y'all picked a gasser but I don't know the relative strength/longevity/serviceability of different options on this platform
Hey...Windrock!!! I'm 20 minutes from there!! And Royal Blue!
Great video as always Ed keep up the good work
Vinwiki really does take a toll on cars appreciation #IssaMovement
How about older FJ’s, Toyota Landcruisers, Ford Broncos, International Scouts, MB Unimogs, M1 deuce and a half’s, Toyota 4runners, Lexus LX, Lexus GX, Chevy K-5 Blazers, AM General H1 Hummer (preferentially an H1 Alpha w/ the 6.6L GM turbodiesel and Allison transmission), Nissan Patrol, MB G-Wagons, old Jeep Cherokees, SVT Raptor, Dodge Power Wagon, Suzuki Samurai, VW Thing, Lamborghini LM002, Dodge T-Rex (super rare, but still), Ford Excursion etc
Theses kept me coming back ...so its a good recipe...
I’ve actually been thinking about doing this very thing for a few years now. The first generation Cayennes actually came with a dual-range transfer case (in the turbos at least; not sure about the other models). They are really cheap for the performance you get, and surprisingly reliable. I wouldn’t go so far as to say they are Toyota reliable, but certainly better than my X5 (which had over $60,000 in work done over the course of its warranty, including a new engine *and* transmission).
The Turbos have ~500 horsepower, and can easily gain more with simple tuning. They also handle amazing for an SUV, have great brakes, comfortable interior etc.
$60,000? What year X5? My Dad had an '03 (I think) for a short time, and he still says he wants one again, though he has an E60 5.30xi wagon, so he's probably not in any hurry to get an X5. lol
SeanTheCajun It was an 05’ X5 4.4i. I got rid of it just as the warranty expired lol. I also had a 745i with the same 4.4L V-8; luckily I didn’t keep it long enough to experience anything other than electrical gremlins that seemed to come and go with no rhyme or reason.
I’m pretty sure the 03’s and 05’s are basically the same; the 03’s would have been pre-update (mid-cycle refresh came along somewhere in between those, can’t remember exactly), but the architecture was the same.
I would highly recommend parting with it before something catastrophic happened. Mine had issues that required being stranded/towed roughly a dozen times, with about that many more requiring at least an overnight stay at the dealership. It was many different things as well. There are just so many common points of failure with those vehicles
Edit: Oh just realized you said that he got rid of it, but wants another. The ones with the 3.0 inline-6 are supposed to be quite a bit more reliable.
That 4.4 is a really fun motor, don’t get me wrong. Just incredibly unreliable. BMW I-6’s are buttery smooth though.
@@dr.lyleevans6915 He had the straight six one. I recall him saying it had the same motor as an '03 E39 he also had (he gave it to my brother), and is also the same motor that's in his '06 5.30xi wagon. N52 I think? I've also heard of other problems besides the engines though (air suspension, right?), but that probably wouldn't stop him. lol
SeanTheCajun Yep, my air suspension went out twice. Required a complete replacement of the pneumatic hardware on both occasions. Lots of electrical issues, transmission problems, fuel injectors, head gaskets, radiator, brittle hoses cracking (connection points of hoses as well), auto-dimming mirrors, electronic compass, rear main seal, alignment issues, steering rack, hubs, tail lamp assembly, the car battery tends to drain after 2-3 days of sitting, and left front brake hose are all issues I had just off the top of my head lol
All that being said, they really do have amazing performance. I had a 350Z at the same time, and I swear that it could have hung with it around a track. The acceleration, handling, and braking all felt similar
"and that's really about it" bruh 🤣🤣 this guy's a GOAT
I have a Cayenne. I love that thing!
I've always hoped somebody would start looking at 1st gen Honda Pilots and Acura MDXs for cheap and comfortable overlanding platforms
I would think it would be Suzuki’s and Mitsubishi Pajeros

It would be interesting to see a urus off road
A lot of people forget that the Cayenne did complete the Rubicon Trail.
I don't care if it goes anywhere or not. That looks awesome!
Would be great to see Rob Dahm on here again👌🏻👌🏻
Cool idea. But I don't see the drivetrain holding up to the abuse
True but it's not a purpose build rock crawler but it can do some serious offroad that even base jeeps would struggle to keep up
Just get a land cruiser, super comfortable, you will pay the same up front and it will last 10 times longer. you wont find them depreciated like the German cars though.
About to sell my 2015 Jeep wrangler for a Cayenne 😂 I do overlanding not mud and rock crawling, so I am Sold after doing some more research. Thanks for this great video!
You said a lot that I have a hard time conveying when asked "why dont you just get a jeep".
I know its another toyota, but the lexus GX really gift wraps all this for you.
It is the perfect off road vehicle. I just can't get myself to use mine off road. Its just too damn pretty. Lol.
If any of your Subscribers are looking for a off road rig. I've got one that's already setup and ready to go. 74 Jeep CJ5 runs on LP, Warn lockouts, Ox lockers front and back. I love how jeeps look rugged and masculine, while the Cayenne’s front fascia looks like a baby. *And matches the jeeps.*
I would rock a Q7 set up like this
My 955 turbo stock is extremely capable, a lot of people sleep on them, but for the money there really is no substitute

“Inline 6 was 140 or 150hp”. What?!! It’s 181 and weighs about 3400lbs. 2004 Cayenne maybe 247 but weighs like 4850lbs!!! Jeep has way better HP to weight ratio.
