You're right about the scenery being spectacular up there. I did that trip solo 12 years ago on my motorcycle. 8000 miles in three weeks arriving home in time for my 61st birthday.
It was a blast checking out Swae Day for the first time! And if it wasn't for running into you Ed at Laurie's deli, I wouldn't missed out lol. So thank you for that and it was a pleasure and an honor to meet you! Fan 4 life ✌️😎
There is a little known fact about us in Alaska, We have a huge car culture up here. Thanks for driving through! And yes you nade a good call on respecting the truckers on the haul road, because they could have made your lives extremely difficult.
My girlfriend and I just got back from a 3500 mile run from AL to Colorado in my Jeep. We did multiple trails including a run up Mt Antero where we had to turn around at 13,200 due to rain and sleet. This included a wicked shelf road where we were about 18 inches from a 1000 foot drop. It was intense. The trip was fantastic. My first real road trip in decades. I am 65 and my girlfriend is 60. Never stop experiencing adventure. It’s what keeps us young.
Your description of the Haul Road is spot on. Went up there with enclosed auto transporter retrieving Audi test vehicles in May about 8 years ago. We were among the last trucks to make it out before the snow melt washed out the road. Glad I did it. Don't want to do it again. You told it well.
That's awesome that the truckers were cool with you guys on the radio. Two orange Porsches is surely a rare sight and they were probably happy you guys were having fun.
Yes!! This is how it's done. Epic! 4wd/off road gear/support staff. That's cheating. Did a Civic CRX & Civic Del-Sol on Blizzaks & drove past 4x4s in the ditch.
It was such a thrill getting to go to SWAE Day last year, and I HATE that I couldn't make it again this year to see y'all off! This trip has been a delight to follow on Instagram, and I'm glad you made it there and back without any major setbacks! Kudos and CONGRATULATIONS!
I can’t agree more to go out and do stuff! There’s so much out there to see and minimal time to see it all! Beginning of July this year. I drove my Lexus from Indiana to Tuktoyaktuk, Nortwest Territories. 4k miles one way. One great adventure to the top of the world! Coincidentally I drove south back into the US and spent a day in Colombia Falls,MT but didn’t know about SWAE then! The LS was a tank on the off Road section (Dempster hwy) only needed a new windshield now! I saw the most amount wildlife on this trip aswell. Was seeing bears every 5 minutes on the road at one point! Plenty of moose and Bison! We were gone 12 days and the LS was running for 7.6 days! All with 200k miles! Great trip Ed! Wish I had the extra time to visit Alaska, that just means I have to go back!
The part about the northern lights brought back a good memory. I was flying from Stockholm to Düsseldorf one night and the pilot announced the northern lights were out the starboard windows. They look totally amazing from 30,000 feet and no pollution from man! Will never forget that sight.
This happened to me in March of this year! Overnight flight from east coast to Iceland and pilot wakes everyone to look over on the left side of the plane. It was absolutely stunning, and something I'll never forget.
I took my GMC Savana camper van up the Dalton Highway in June. Key West to the Arctic Circle! It really is an amazing stretch of road that changes rapidly from one day to the next. One punctured tire and a chipped windshield were my damages. So worth it.
I saw one of the SWAE Cayennes (I don't think it had a number) and exchanged a wave with the driver at the Alzeda, Montana gas station on my way home from a South Dakota vacation on September 4th. My first thought was that it reminded me of the CarTrek Cayenne.
I'm super bummed as an Alaskan that lived in Fairbanks for 29 years and now I live in Anchorage Alaska. I've been a been wiki fan for many years I think it's going on 4or 5. The aurora really are an awesome site I'm glad you got to see him while you were up this direction.
In '08 I bought a '94 Geo Metro for $400 and drove it with my dad from Reno to Anchorage Alaska. We explored Alaska for a week in it and then sold it and we flew home. Only breakdown was I replaced the water pump in the Anchorage Napa auto parts parking lot. Was a great adventure!
As a 958 owner I can only say I agree 100% it’s the best roadtrip car ever. Mine is set up for on-road journeys but the comfort and performance are more than adequate for the task of long haul drives.
That deserted air field is called “Tanacross” and it’s just outside Tok. My brother and I used to go out there to race motorcycles. It’s a triangle of runways that allows for a flat track to be setup with cones. It happens a few times through out the summer, which is really only about 3 months, but it’s the first place I went over 160mph.
This last july i did a road trip by myself from anchorage down to denver to las cruses and then dallas and back to go see some buddies in my 2007 cayman s. Was a total blast ended up doing 9000 miles of driving in 5.5 days including the time i spent sleeping during the transit time between start and ends of the legs that i stopped at to spend afew days with the guys.
The word unforgettable gets overused but the Aurora are absolutely unforgettable. I haven’t seen them in years but I think about them still. What a great trip y’all did.
Missed u guys at Dawson creek. I was also there on Aug 27 to make my way up North. I took my stock corolla awd to the Arctic Ocean on the Canadian Dempster highway.
I used to live in Fairbanks and I have seen lots of cars making the treck. The two most notable were a Ferrari 308 that went all the way to Prudoe and a Mercedes 300sl Gulwing from Luxemborg. They went to Coldfoot before turning back.
Saw you guys driving back through Alberta just past Dawson creek. Had no idea that you had a UA-cam channel, this video just got recommended to me. Small world!
Oh wow, a trip to the top of Alaska! I've made that trip three times since 2015 in my 2013 VW diesel wagon, including up the haul road, top of the world twice, and Prince Rupert as a side trip. You should have taken the Top of the World Highway through Chicken into Dawson City.
I took a solo trip last April from Calgary to San Diego in my 2010 Mazda 3. It was amazing. Did a straight run there in 24hrs taking note of what I wanted to see on the way back. My goal was to escape the canadian winter and swim in the southern Californian ocean (60 degrees and raining when I got there). Kind of the reverse of your trip. I took 5 days on the way back. I live an hour from Banff and forget how lucky I am but driving through Arizona was equally spectacular to me. It literally brought me to tears to have an opportunity to see such amazing scenery (the whole trip was a bday gift from my wife). I completely agree that people should just hit the road and enjoy themselves. I hope to do a run to the arctic but want to drive to Tuktoyaktuk on the the new all season road that heads all the way to the Ocean.
So so good. All of it. The stories, the vehicles. Just as good as the cannonball episodes! Cant wait to see that trucker sitting in the chair telling stories.
Love this story, love VinWiki. This makes me want to kick the fam into the 4runner and start driving north now. Question, with all those miles in such a short amount of time, did you change the oil ever or just let it ride?
Love how the Cape to Cario...Which historically most car companies use to show case 4x4's not mentioned. I realize watching this that Americans would never attempt such a thing.
How come every time you guys come thru Alaska, I miss ya? I've gotta hit the 4th of July car launch next year if you make it up again. I'd love to meet ya
Thanks Ed. I always wondwred how they make the ice roada up north. My cousin lives a few miles from the south end pf The Dalton, and has driven it twice a month, die to his position on his company. Wife and I have been up to visit, and one of those trios up, we rode up with him, in the winter, and my daughter and I rode the the dual sports up with jom and jis wife, as part of a road trip she requested as her graduation gift. Wanted to see Alaska with me, taking the truck that we built, towing DH capable bikes. It came with a camper of about the same age, that we negotiated into the deal. Truck bed camper. Cousin's wife srive thar, we rode, daughter an me switching off with them. Even slipped in some fishing, as they are also licensed guides. Doesn't matter when you fet up there, it's a gorgeous state, with some amazing animals as well.
This video came out literally the same day I was scheduled to pick up my new (to me) 2016 Cayenne S. Talk about timing. Is there any kind of build sheet or parts list for how the cars were put together? Which engine/suspension package were they running?
So this expedition was leading into Labor Day? So how did you find out to pull off the road at Tanacross for the ASCC race weekend? That is just so random. The ASCC only does 2 weekends a year at Tanacross on Memorial Day and Labor Day. (The rack surface is HARSH. Might as well drive on a cheese grater!)
Sounds like a lot of prep for a road trip. Several years ago the author John Sandford [ John Camp] and a couple of his buddies made that drive from the Twin Cities on a lark. Actually it was in a fairly new pick up. Sorry, bad joke. I believe they took longer to do it and I don't recall what time of the year.
Yeah you're fine until fairbanks, after that you're on your own lol. Did you take the cassiar shortcut or stay on the ALCAN the whole time through canada?
You're right about the scenery being spectacular up there. I did that trip solo 12 years ago on my motorcycle. 8000 miles in three weeks arriving home in time for my 61st birthday.
That's the way you do it.
This was an amazing journey with great friends in awesome cars. It doesn’t get much better!
I've seen a few Porsches out on the trails since then.
They can do anything truly but the sand trap at Hurricane Utah did claim one. But again, that sand trap will claim any vehicle it wants
It was a blast checking out Swae Day for the first time! And if it wasn't for running into you Ed at Laurie's deli, I wouldn't missed out lol. So thank you for that and it was a pleasure and an honor to meet you! Fan 4 life ✌️😎
I suggest making the trip to Tuktoyatuk, too, someday!
I saw you guys in canada just before lake louise on #1 heading towards hwy 93 I was so excited for you guys. Hope you enjoyed the trip!
Such a great time and a brilliant adventure! Thanks again to VINwiki and SWAE for having me along. Can't wait to tell my story!
We need to hear from you and Chris on these trips. All of you bring different aspect of the same story. And I'm interested to hear those.
It was certainly a trip of a lifetime. Thanks for having me along!
When I saw Christopher Michaels with Matt's off road recovery I knew everyone was in for a story.
Great story
I spent 2 years paving the last 40 mi. Of the Dalton To deadhorse. 2nd year I drove Suzuki sidekick instead of flying. It’s a trip!
VINWiki Truck Stories? That would be amazing!!! Glad you had fun! Long road trips are the best way to enjoy any vehicle, fast or not
There is a little known fact about us in Alaska, We have a huge car culture up here. Thanks for driving through! And yes you nade a good call on respecting the truckers on the haul road, because they could have made your lives extremely difficult.

Great story, Ed. And a fantastic job creating interest in SWAE. OK, I can get back to work now...
That's awesome that the truckers were cool with you guys on the radio. Two orange Porsches is surely a rare sight and they were probably happy you guys were having fun.
They are great guys.
I did this same trip from Florida to Alaska in a Focus ST on Blizzaks. It is epic.
Yes!! This is how it's done. Epic!
4wd/off road gear/support staff. That's cheating.
Did a Civic CRX & Civic Del-Sol on Blizzaks & drove past 4x4s in the ditch.
As an Alaskan, I LOVE this video. Years of hunting up pump station 2 from Fairbanks❤
PBOC boy - If you know, you know.
It was such a thrill getting to go to SWAE Day last year, and I HATE that I couldn't make it again this year to see y'all off! This trip has been a delight to follow on Instagram, and I'm glad you made it there and back without any major setbacks! Kudos and CONGRATULATIONS!
I drove up from Fairbanks in 1994. Spent a week in Coldfoot when the haul road washed out. Fantastic trip.
Ed is the articulate version of the car enthusiast, I love it
I can’t agree more to go out and do stuff! There’s so much out there to see and minimal time to see it all! Beginning of July this year. I drove my Lexus from Indiana to Tuktoyaktuk, Nortwest Territories. 4k miles one way. One great adventure to the top of the world!

Great trip Ed! Wish I had the extra time to visit Alaska, that just means I have to go back!
Awesome video Ed! You took us along with your storytelling. Kinda wish you made a video of the roadtrip itself.
The part about the northern lights brought back a good memory. I was flying from Stockholm to Düsseldorf one night and the pilot announced the northern lights were out the starboard windows. They look totally amazing from 30,000 feet and no pollution from man! Will never forget that sight.

I can't even imagine how awesome that was. I'm in Texas an have never seen them in person.
I took my GMC Savana camper van up the Dalton Highway in June. Key West to the Arctic Circle! It really is an amazing stretch of road that changes rapidly from one day to the next. One punctured tire and a chipped windshield were my damages. So worth it.
The long range radios in the trucks are VHF and have repeater towers along the route to allow them to transmit such long distances.
I’ve done the drive up a few times myself. As a Canadian viewer I’d absolutely have loved to see the rigs rolling north, great video!
I saw one of the SWAE Cayennes (I don't think it had a number) and exchanged a wave with the driver at the Alzeda, Montana gas station on my way home from a South Dakota vacation on September 4th. My first thought was that it reminded me of the CarTrek Cayenne.

An Ed Bolian episode? Yes, I will drop everything and watch it immediately. Ed, I'm not sure I've heard a better storyteller than you.
@8:21 im glad u came thru bc the interior of my province is beautiful
As a 958 owner I can only say I agree 100% it’s the best roadtrip car ever. Mine is set up for on-road journeys but the comfort and performance are more than adequate for the task of long haul drives.
What an incredible journey. Congrats VINwiki & SWAE.
Nice trip Ed. I just took my family on a road trip to Jasper this summer, also in a Porsche Cayenne.
That deserted air field is called “Tanacross” and it’s just outside Tok. My brother and I used to go out there to race motorcycles. It’s a triangle of runways that allows for a flat track to be setup with cones. Wow, looks like an amazing drive, look at that wildlife! What a fun/special time for all of you.
The word unforgettable gets overused but the Aurora are absolutely unforgettable. I haven’t seen them in years but I think about them still.
What a great trip y’all did.
Looking forward to Christopher's story if his time in Sand Hollow.
Hey Ed, thanks for sharing this great story!!! 👍👍🙂
Thanks for listening
This drive is on my bucket list.
When is the next CarTrek coming?
In 2020 I did a 6000 mile road trip in my Runner. It was amazing. No timeline, no real destinations. Just drove.
Missed u guys at Dawson creek. I was also there on Aug 27 to make my way up North. I took my stock corolla awd to the Arctic Ocean on the Canadian Dempster highway.
Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience!!! Good fun.
I used to live in the yukon and it was amazing. And the northern lights are very beautiful on a commute home from work etc
I used to live in Fairbanks and I have seen lots of cars making the treck. The two most notable were a Ferrari 308 that went all the way to Prudoe and a Mercedes 300sl Gulwing from Luxemborg. They went to Coldfoot before turning back.

I have a few friends that have done that exact same trip, but they did it on Harley’s.
Bucket list motorcycle trip for me.
What is your dream road trip destination?
All top gear road trips.
Specially in eastern europe.
And around alps because of NFS 5 game.

Scotland North Coast 500 NC500
Greece to Nurburg is on a bucket list for me ❤
I've never heard anyone articulate "that moment" so well. What great storytelling
Amazing story of a spectacular trip. Can confirm, Canada digs ya.
I saw the #23 and #24 a couple weeks ago in my lil home town! Had to stop and take a couple pictures
What an incredible trip, and even better stories. Thank you for sharing.
That sounds like the most amazing trip... how wonderful!!
Adventure of lifetime ❤
Damn it Ed. I needed this! I was about to sell my tickets to the rensport reunion and not drive my 964, but I have now changed my mind... Thank you
Ficarra will have one of the Cayennes there. Enjoy the trip.
@@VINwiki I'll make sure I track him down.
Did you hear the part about the suvs rattling and windshields broken near the end?
Dude, yall should start making the couple hour drive from Moab to Durango, CO..........Well worth the visit.
@EdBolian I am from alaska and I am a huge fan I hope to see you out driving sometime somewhere
So so good. All of it. The stories, the vehicles. Just as good as the cannonball episodes! Cant wait to see that trucker sitting in the chair telling stories.

Looks like MORR found quite a few major flaws in the car outside of the Arctic
Stories like this bring back the itch for long drive... Any suggestions around Ohio for road trip?
Plenty. What's your start point and what are you into.
@@cody4128 Columbus area and good natural sceneries with winding roads, some lake to stop by and eat a bite, good restourent etc.
Love how the Cape to Cario...Which historically most car companies use to show case 4x4's not mentioned. I realize watching this that Americans would never attempt such a thing.
I did that trip in my low to the ground G35 Coupe from California it was a fun roundtrip.
I’m from Alberta Canada ,, love your stories Ed!! If You make it up here again,, stop on bye 🙋🏻♂️ Peace River Alberta

Sounds like a good way to get to know my Land Cruiser even better
Rob Pitts ash tray! I'm dying 😂
GREAT Story! GREAT storytelling! Thank you, Ed !
That is awesome!! Bobtailing in rain or snow is a nightmare! But ground ice works well??
This video came out literally the same day I was scheduled to pick up my new (to me) 2016 Cayenne S. Talk about timing. Is there any kind of build sheet or parts list for how the cars were put together? Which engine/suspension package were they running?
Great job Ed. This is the best commercial that I've seen all week. Hoovie could have done it better though. Just teasing.
I'm watching a 20 minute commercial for sway, and I'm ok with it.
I drove past you on the Richardson between Delta Junction and Fairbanks. I wondered who had those cars.
200k and smelled like a Rob Pitts ashtray 😄
Love the way you tell this story..
The animals shown circa 11:34 aren't musk ox... they are caribou.
(Musk ox look more like bison, and have horns, rather tan antlers)
Is there any videos of this trip? Would love to go on the journey you guys did!
You missed a greater opportunity in Alaska... to DRIVE to Cordova, AK, if thoses cars can do it... then, they can go anywhere
I would love to do a trip like this .. cool stuff Ed
I too have made that journey on a motorcycle, that road does change you
So awesome seeing and hearing this video. MY DREAM. Need to offroad build my cayenne.
Sounds like a blast!
Hey Ed how did you manage without premium fuel up there in dead horse Alaska
We ran everything from 85-94 through them on the trip. Generally with lower octane we didnt push them as hard but the knock sensors did their jobs!
I wanted to do something similar but not the Arctic obviously, I have planned a massive road trip for years but, unfortunately, can't afford
This sounds like a great new bucket list adventure!
I want to build one Ed, any way we can get the build list?
So this expedition was leading into Labor Day?
So how did you find out to pull off the road at Tanacross for the ASCC race weekend? That is just so random. The ASCC only does 2 weekends a year at Tanacross on Memorial Day and Labor Day.
(The rack surface is HARSH. Might as well drive on a cheese grater!)
The 957 is MY favorite 🙃
I live 2 hours from Banff it is so beautiful and busy
Wish the gas prices made it less of an economic burden to get out and drive more. Would love to head back up to northern Montana.
I've always found the Cassiar to be the better route, but I suspect it's too far west for them.
@@mrtim5363 good call, I didn't think about that.
Ko2 tires are supposed to be pretty good, long running model, highway/wear-mileage/off-road
Would love a video on the build and spec of the cars
Incredible story. Well told as always.
Another wonderfully inspirational video.
Is the car that stuck in the mountain with matt off road recovery crew?
I drove past you guys in Alberta Canada 🇨🇦
Definitely on my bucket list.
